Disable folder creation in root but not in subfolders
Hello everybody, we have a shared network drive and i have already set the structure of the root folders in C:\. I want to restrict users to create a new folder or move a file in the root directory C:\ but to be able to create, move etc in the subfolders
of c:\
How is that possible?
You can configure options like those from within the Advanced security settings options.
Go into the properties of C:\, Security tab and then click Advanced. By default permissions are configured for "This folder, subfolders and files", but within here you can add permissions for subsets of those.
Add a new permission for your required group with the restricted permissions you require for C:\ and set it to "This folder only". Then add another permission for the same group but this time for the less restricted permissions you want them to have elsewhere,
and set that to "Subfolders and files only".
They'll then have the higher permissions for subfolders, while allowing you to restrict what they can do in the root of c:\ (with the obvious exception of any folders which are set not to inherit their permissions from the root of C:\).

.jsp works in ROOT but not separate web
I am very new to JSP but I am running the Java runtime on a Unix
REDHAT machine and I am using Apache Tomcat. I have the $TOMCAT_HOME
defined and the usual helloworld.jsp will run at
$TOMCAT_HOME/webapps/ROOT but not at my web which is
$TOMCAT_HOME/webapps/ralph. All I did was copy from one to the other.
What else do I need to do to make this work?
Thanks.
Ralph Tillery
Interesting.
- Does the page look identical in each browser
though?Yes, the pages look identical in every other way.
- When you click a box to expand the tree does it load
a new page or is it handled through some client side
scripting like Javascript? No new page is loaded, a Javascript handles the "+" boxes.
- What versions of Netscape have you found it didn't
work?I've tried it out on v4.75 as well as v6.2, no success with either.
Someone else mentioned to me that it sounds like a Javascript problem. I've worked with Javascript for a couple of years now, but I've never seen these "+" boxes used before, so I'm in new territory as far as those are concerned. Thanks!

I have my photos in folders with subfolders on my pc When I sync to my Ipad I only get the main folder but not the subfolders. All pictures that are in the subfolders are synced but in no order. I checked to sync all folders. Help!
Thanks for your reply.
Does that mean that as its just another way of accessing my photos then it does not increase double up on memory ? In my photo library after repeated sycs on my IP 4 there appear to be 3 identical pictures in a row sometime just 2, why would this be if its just another way of accessing my pics, this confuses me. -
Source Reformat menu item disabled for some XML files, but not all
For some reason, the 'Reformat' option isn't available for some of my XML files (in Source menu it's disabled, in the right-click pop up menu it's not even there). For example in my META-INF folder it's enabled for .wsdl files but not .xml files. In the same project, it's enabled for all .xml files in the WEB-INF folder.
Any idea what's going on?
TIAThanks to everyone for their response. But - it is NOT a copyright issue , it is NOT a DRM issue, it is not a Faber College double secret probation encoding issue.
This is a simple .wmv file, that I have copied, burned, created a disk image, made a copy of and sent to the UK, Germany, Ireland and even New Jersey. It has been played on a MacBook Pro, a MacBook, a Dell whatever, a Sony stand alone DVD player, an LG DVD player. At least three nieces or nephews, and at least 2 canines have put it through ISO 9XXX rigors.
The problem is that Apple Quick Time 7 Pro with Flip4Mac Pro "can't handle it"
It opens fine, it plays fine --- but when I try to "output" it via the FILE menu - all of the options
Share ...
Export ...
Export to Web ...
are greyed out.
I know nothing abour codecs and wrappers but I tihnk that this is the problem.
What should I know about the file?
Ffor example, years ago, all you needed to know about a Mac file was the "Creator" and the "Type" - both were 4 character codes. something like ADOB for Adobe and PMK2 for Pagemaker 2.0.
Any help identifying the file and what I can use to get it onto my iPhone will be appreciated.
Thank you. -
JRE 1.5 plugin for Firefox on Linux works as root but not as an other user
I am trying to usel the JRE plugin for Firefox on Fedora Core 4. I downloaded and installed it as "root" and created the symbolic link so Firefox can "see" it. It now works just fine if I run Firefox as "root", but if I run it as any other user, it thinks that the plugin is not installed.
I checked to make sure that the path to the symbolic link is accessible by anyone (all directories in the path are x to "other" and the link and the .so file are both rx for "other").
What else do I need to do so non-root users can use this plugin?remove $HOME/.mozilla/plugins and $HOME/.java and try again

Allowing the creation of users but not letting them be assigned to the Administrators group?
Hi
I am using Project Server 2013 on-prem, with Project Server Security. We have defined a local administrator group that is intended to allow for a limited set of permissions to local administrators. The reason for this is that we need the individual offices
in a global company to be able to add their own users, but we want the ability to change configuration of Project Server to be controlled centrally.
However I have found that once I give Manage Users and Groups permission to a user in this Local Administrator group they can then simply add themselves to the Administrator group anyway.
Setting policy and training is not proving effective, hence I need to limit this. The desire is for a group that can create users and add values to lookup tables, but not add themselves to the Administrator group.
Is this possible?
Thanks
RyanYou could still take the approach of having your helpdesk assign the permissions and remove the manage users and groups permissions from the local administrators in an office (as opposed to switching to the different permission model).
I'm curious how training and policy isn't working -- you've asked (told) the users not to add themselves to the administration group and yet they do it anyway? Are they doing this so they have permissions to perform some other tasks?

10.6.5 allows rename of Public folder on Mac Mini but not on MacBook Pro
I have 10.6.5 running on a brand new Mac Mini and it lets me rename my Public folder so I can recognize it easily on my home network. My one year old MacBook Pro has this renaming option grayed out and I can't find how to enable it. I've looked at the sharing preferences and other places and I've searched this support forum.
Any ideas of what I might be forgetting to check, or set, or disable, or something? Thanks for the tip. I marked my question solved, but I'm not really sure why one computer lets me rename and the other doesn't. I'll bet you're right and I shouldn't be renaming that stuff. I used Time Machine to go back to before I did that.
I'm now connecting to both machines as a registered user and I can ignore the Public folders anyway.
One thing still puzzles: the MacBook connects to the Mini almost instantly, but the Mini takes maybe a minute or more to connect to the MacBook. I thought about it waking the disk from sleep, but I've tried this right after making the MacBook do something to make sure it's spinning the disk. Maybe I'll play with it some more and search for answers or post another question later. -
Sharing iTunes Music folder on external HD but not Mobile Applications folder?
I share the iTunes Music folder on an external HD between two separate Mac user accounts. Each user has their own iPhone and syncs within their own user account. All the media for user#1 (books, apps, etc) are in the appropriate folders in this shared iTunes Music folder, which means user #2 is seeing all user #1's stuff in their iPhone sync windows in iTunes.
I don't want to share anything but the actual iTunes library music files between the two Mac user accounts (and the two iPhones). Everything else for each user (apps, books etc.) I want to keep separate. Both users have a separate iTunes store account. Is this possible? It seems that removing the apps of user#1 from user#2's library (i.e. deleting them in iTunes window, not trashing the actual file) does the trick ... this change updates the user's library .xtml file. Now user#2's apps are syncing only on their phone when they log in and use iTunes. When user#1 logs in iTunes just shows user#1 apps and syncs those.

[HELP]don't allow access folder in web root, but allow dowload files in it?
Hi all!
I got a big problem, at least ... with me .. uhm ... I have a web application, which I allow user upload file on, I save that file in a folder below the web root, I mean ... www.mywebapp/files/uploadFile.zip <--- something like that...
I don't want user to able to access files folder, but ... I allow who has already login as admin of my web app can download that files :( ...
how can I do that ... plz help me :(
thanks in advance :(Put the "files" folder under the WEB-INF directory.
Nothing can access the WEB-INF directory directly.
Then write a servlet that will get requests, and send back the file.
Alternatively you can use web.xml security constraints, to define who can/can't access the files. -
Disable Control Panel for users but NOT for administrators
I'm unsure why Microsoft has not yet published this information. I'm sure that sysadmins everywhere want more granular control of the control panel besides disabling for everyone or enabling for everyone, which is what it seems Microsoft wants me and
you to do, disable CP for everyone, enable it every time I log on as admin and need to use it, then disable again. Ridiculous.
I am a consultant for a large company and our partners like to take as much control as possible. I do too, for that matter. Last week I began researching how to disable the control panel for everyone except admins. I am operating under
the assumption that non-admin accounts do not need access to control panel and it's better if they don't, especially in a production environment where the terminals the users are operating are mission critical.
Finally, I found the answer. I hope this helps you because it took me 3 days to finally find it. It works. I've tested it with admin and non-admin. The great thing is, you can control any GP setting for non-admin users in this manner,
not just the Control Panel. You could disable any and all functionality not necessary for day to day operations for all your users but still maintain access to everything by logging on as an administrator.
The question is answered here
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/101869-local-group-policies-apply-all-users-except-administrators.htmlDon:
Sorry for the confusion. Not sure why my link is bad and yours is good. They both appear to be identical.
The issue with executing gpedit.msc is that when you apply a setting, the setting is for all users, even administrators. If I want to disable access to the control panel, I do so for admins as well when simply executing gpedit.msc, which means if I
log in and need access to control panel, I have to enable it in GP, do the work necessary and then disable it again (if I remember) when work is complete. A bit of a drag, especially for busy admins and support techs. On the other hand, following
the instructions in the link disables control panel for all users except administrators. So if I need to work with Control Panel as an admin, I've saved the enable, disable steps and don't have to worry about remembering as well.
I hope that clarifies. Thanks for your feedback.
ok, thanks. I re-read the guide one more time and now I understand the logic - it creates a LocalGPO object, when gpedit.msc is launched in this very special way. It's kind of cool, even if rather niche. (I'm assuming that it only works for LocalGP and not
for Domain GP).
I think your original link had a trailing dot, but it's fine now.
Thanks for clarifying - even after all these years, I am still learning new things :)

Adobe Illustrator works under root, but not my normal admin account.
I am having an issue using Adobe Illustrator under my normal system administrator. It works under the root user. Not sure why this is. They can't help me fix it. This also happens on my laptop.
Here is my report from illustrator.

Hi, couldn't read all those logs, but...
Question matks, even in the root UUID 0 account indicate some deeper problem, but no expert.
Was it maybe Installed with root privileges???
Have you booted from the Restore paryion & Repaired Disk, then Permissions? -
Blinking question mark folder icon on startup (but not always!)
I recently obtained a new hard drive (Western Digital 80gb) and installed the Mac OS on a 500 mhz Cube; the DVD drive was not recognized but I removed the jumper on the drive pins rendering the disc a master and finally, the DVD drive was found so that I could perform the OS install. The problem is that if I start up the Cube after a long period of time having been OFF (e.g., 5 hours) there is the blinking question mark folder (Mac OS logo alternates with question mark). After 3-4 minutes, the startup disc is finally located. Now, if I do a cold restart a few minutes later, there is NO problem on startup. My startup issue always occurs after a longer period of time with the Cube having been OFF. There is a new battery installed, permissions are fixed, the drive checks out without problems with disc utility. What could be the problem?
Probably your PRAM battery is gone. This stores information such as your preferred startup disk. I know you said you put in a new battery but have you actually tested it? The computer being off for several hours really, really sounds like a bad battery. Also check the terminals both on the battery and in the machine aren't corroded and it is seated correctly.

If you have a digital multimeter you can check the condition of your present battery. It should read at least 3.2V if it is the 3.6V half-AA battery type. Ideally this should be measured while the battery is under load; added recommendation from Hans777:
I have recently found out that an exhausted battery will still indicate >3.6 V with a high internal resistance VM.
Checking incircuit: powercord disconnected press PMU reset button for >about 5 sec before measuring.
Checking outside: load the battery with a 1500 Ohm resistor when measuring.

Windows folder shows when networking, but not contents.
Greetings,
I am using my MacBook Pro (client) to network wirelessly with my PC (server) using Windows file sharing (XP). I have three folders that I share. All three show up, but only two of them show their contents. I have checked and rechecked my share settings on the folders on the PC, and I swear they're identical. Any thoughts?Upon further review...
After slogging around Windows networking troubleshooter, I was able to view the permissions on each folder, and changed the one that wasn't configured correctly. Why two of them worked by simply checking the share box, and one didn't is still a mystery, but it's working now.
Thanks for your reply, it nudged me in the right direction! -
Mobility works for root but not autodiscover
Okay everyone, What am I missing:
If I input manually on any iOS and ANdriod, It works fine:
https://lyncweb.company.com/autodiscover/autodiscoverservice.msc/root
*** WORKS ***
Autodiscover gives me the following error:
13:22:12.262 13507 13507 V HttpConnectionNativeCallback: exception java.net.UnknownHostException: Unable to resolve host "lyncdiscover.company.com": No address associated with hostname statusCode 0
Nslookup looks good from local computer:
nslookup lyncweb.company.com
Non-Authoritative answer:
Name: lyncweb.company.com
Address: xxx.xxx.36.138
If i input into browser: I get the following:
https://lyncweb.company.com/autodiscover/autodiscoverservice.svc/root

Get-CsMCXconfiguration |fl

SessionExpirationInterval: 259200
SessionShortExpirationInterval: 3600
ExposedWebURL: External
PushNotificationProxyUri: sip:[email protected]
External DNS looks good for all IP addresses
Any Ideas ?Thanks for the quick reply. Same external IP as lyncweb.

Library in shared folder - users can see, but not change?
We have or music library saved to the shared folder so all of the users in the family can access the music. However, only the original user can make changes (change genre, mark don't include in shuffle, etc.). Is this by design, or should everyone be able to make changes to the music?
This still does not fix it... If you cannot R&W over the folders and the library, you cannot even open the library. I've been looking into the same issue, and have not been successful. I might try what I used for iPhoto and worked beautifully; I have not done so, because if I remember correctly, it was posted that this does not work:
sudo fsaclctl -p / -e
sudo chmod +a "<other user> allow delete,chown,list,search,add_file,\
addsubdirectory,delete_child,file_inherit,directoryinherit" <path to directory>
