Disable prompt when opening document from intranet

I am developing a new company intranet using Sharepoint Services 3.0 on Windows Server 2003 Standard SP2.
On my intranet I have a series of links pointing to documents in a library.
My problem is that for every MS Office file I open I get a prompt box from IE asking '"What do you want to do with this file - open, Save, Save As".  This is going to drive our users mad.
What I want to do is turn-off this prompt so that when the user clicks the link it just opens the file.
I can understand why this prompt would occur when accessing an 'outside' website but it's an unnecessary hurdle on an internal only intranet.
I am using IE9 on Windows 7 Pro 64-bit but the only 'solutions' I can find anywhere on the web all refer to previous versions of IE & Windows; none of them seem to work with the IE9/Win7 combination.  I should also point out I get a similar
scenario with the Avant browser, but IE is our company default installation.
Is there anything in Sharepoint Services that I'm missing that governs how documents etc. are opened from a link in a sharepoint site?

Yes, it's in the Local Intranet zone.
It would seem there is an option for this in Sharepoint, called Browser File Handling, but it only exists in Sharepoint 2010, it's not available in Sharepoint Servicves 3.0 which is why I couldn't find it.
I have now found a couple of workarounds but they are not ideal as they involve editing the Windows registry, and I don't really want to do that on every users computer, but just in case anyone else wants to know here they are.
Create registry key HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\AttachmentExecute\{0002DF01-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}
Create REG_BINARY values in this key for each product required eg. Excel.Sheet.8, PowerPoint.Show.8, Word.Document.8
Alternatively in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT set the EditFlags value for each product required to 00 00 01 00.
As always, recommendation is to back up the registry before changes and don't attempt the above if you're not confident with registry editing.
If anybody knows of a simpler way to always open files from a Sharepoint site without prompting then I'd still like to know.

  • Why no Read Only / Edit prompt when opening document from a hyperlink (link)?

I have a page that I've added hyperlinks to that point to documents in a document library.
If I click on a link to an Excel file, it doesn't give me the Read Only / Edit option. Instead, I get Open/Save/Cancel, and if I open it, I can't save it to the doc library, because it's
    opened as Read Only.
On the same page, I have a link to a Word file to the SAME doc library. I still only get Open/Save/Cancel, but I can save - and it can overwrite the existing file on SharePoint. This is not ideal, but works.
What I'd like is to be able to link to a document from anywhere and have it open the Read Only / Edit prompt.
I've read elsewhere that this is a client issue, but I can't find the resolution.

    Hi Ben,
    Try this:
Quit all Office programs that are running.
    Click
    Start, click
    Run, type regedit in the
    Open box, and then click
    OK.
Locate and then right-click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\<version_number>\Common\Internet
Note In this subkey, <version_number> corresponds to 10-15 for the specific Office version that is installed.
    Point to
    New, and then click
    DWORD Value.
Type OpenDocumentsReadWriteWhileBrowsing, and then press ENTER.
    Right-click
    OpenDocumentsReadWriteWhileBrowsing, and then click
    Modify.
    In the
Value data box, type 1, and then click
    OK.
    On the
    File menu, click
    Exit to quit Registry Editor.
It will force to open all office files from Internet in Edit mode

  • Microsoft Word Hangs When Opening Document From SharePoint 2010 Document Library

I am running into an issue where Word hangs when opening certain files from a document library.  When the issue occurs, Word opens and hangs at the Downloading <Doc URL> stage.  I have tried disabling the SharePoint plugins in IE and that
makes no difference.  I can download a local copy of the file and open in just fine.  The file in questions exists in a separate document library where it can be opened just fine (The file was copied to the library where the issue is occurring by
a Workflow).  The issue also has only occurred on .docx files and not .doc, however, not all docx files are having the issue.
Does anyone have any thoughts on what might be causing this?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that when you opened a certain files from a document library, it hanged at the downloading stage.
I tried to reproduce the issue, after coping by a workflow, the .docx files opened well in my environment.
Did the issue occur in other documents libraries? You can copy the files to a new documents library by workflow, then check whether it works.
For more details we also can check the SharePoint ULS logs.
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\14\LOGS
Have you check your IE settings (Tools->options->connections->LAN settings->uncheck Automatically detect settings).
Please also use fidder tools to detect the process. You can download it by the following link.

  • How do I disable Check out dialog when opening Documents from SharePoint 2010

    Hi
When I open a pdf document form a SharePoint Server 2010 in the client application (Adobe Reader X) I'm always promted to check out the document to be able to edit it. However in most cases I just want to view the document and the promt is a hinderance for most of the users. I can think of two possible solutions but I can get either of them done:
    1. Disable the check out promt in Acrobad Reader
    2. Make sure documents are always opened in the Browser (not in client application)
We configured everything right form the SharePoint point of view. What do I need to configure to achive either of the above things in Acrobat Reader?
    Lucas

I'm still looking for an answer to this post. Any ideas?

  • Adobe Acrobat Standard and Pro - dialog prompt when opening PDF from Internet Explorer 9

    Good morning.
I am having an issue where our ends users that have either Adobe Acrobat X Standard (AAXS) or Adobe Acrobat X Pro (AAXP) cannot open a PDF within Internet Explorer 9 without being prompted by a dialog box to OPEN, SAVE or SAVE AS. Our user that have Adobe Reader X (ARX) only are ok. The ARX users can click on a PDF link within the browser and it will automatically open in a new tab. However, the AAXS and AAXP users will click on that same link, but are then prompted with a dialog box to either OPEN, SAVE or SAVE AS. Has any one else seen this before? We would like it to be so that all users - no matter what Adobe PDF program they are using of the 3 mentioned - can open a PDF link by just clicking on the link and no additional dialog options appear.
The ARX users have the same Internet settings within the Adobe preferences as the AAXS and AAXP users. The check box is checked to have PDFs open within the browser, which they do, but that dialog box always appears for AAXS and AAXP users. Any thoughts?
    Thank you.

Thanks for the reply. I stumbled across something today after posting. I had already known that If the ARX user also had one of the other products (AAXS or AAXP), then they would get the dialog box. Here is what I just figured out: if the user uninstalled ARX and re-installed (still having both ARX and AAXS or AAXP in the end) then they no longer get the dialog box. It seems like perhaps its an issue the AAXP and AAXS are overwriting something in the registry.

  • Force a window browser window close when open docs FROM THE KD

We have an issue when opening documents from the kd a browser window opens, then the office doc opens. But it leaves the blank browser window there open. I have looked into it, and it appears the ptcommonOpener may be able to be modified with a piece of javascript "currentWin.close" in the href that gets built with the link.
Does anyone have any experience with this or another way to do it.
    Thanks

the problem has been solved for me following the process :
    1 -close entourage
    2 - start and follow the complete reconstruction of the entourage database ;
3 - in the "entourage" menu, disable "office reminds" or "office recall" (i don't know the exact name because my entourage is in french)
For me it has worked. when i click on the dock entourage shortcut it opens without showing the new message windows at start.

  • SP2010 - Documents migrated from different farm cause login prompts when opening..

We have 3 SharePoint farms (Dev/Test/Prod) and we migrated Word documents between them a couple of different ways.. AvePoint's DocAve, copy from Explorer view of the two farms and Download/Upload.
The documents were originally created on  the development farm.
When we open documents in the production farm, the user is prompted with a login box to login to the development farm. New documents created in the production farm don't prompt.
Anyone know where / what information is being stored in the document that would reference the old farm? and how to clear it?

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that documents migrated from different farm cause login prompts when opening.
I try to reproduce the issue, however, everything works well.
    I recommend as below:
Open the site in the browner, click tool->Compatibility View Setting->Add the site to be displayed in Compatibility View.
    Click Tool->Internet Options->Security->Trusted Sites.
Click Tool->Internet Options->Security->Restricted sites->Allowed level for this zone: Medium.
Modify your registry settings for the WebClient service.
Go to the file's properties > Security > Advanced  > and Inherit the permissions.

  • Pages tells me I need to upgrade to 5.0 to open documents from iCloud.  When I go to the mac app store it says pages 5.0 is installed, but Pages says it's running 4.3.  I just want to open documents on my mac that were created on my iPad.

Pages tells me I need to upgrade to 5.0 to open documents from iCloud, but the mac app store says its already installed and won't let me upgrade.  when I check the version of pages I am running it says 4.3.  I just want to be able to open documents on my mac that were created on my iPad.  How can i get Pages 5.0?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You already have got Pages 5.0, but you still have got Pages 4.3, so Pages 4.3 is being opened instead of the newest version, being this the reason why you get a message telling you to update Pages to the most recent version.
If you don't need the old version, open a Finder window, choose Applications in the sidebar and delete the old Pages icon or move it to an external drive. I don't recommend you to do this, as users are complaining about the lack of features of the new version.
Instead, what you can do is to put the new Pages icon in the Dock by dragging it from the Finder window to the Dock, so you can open the new Pages version from the Dock and you can open all your documents with it after opening the application

Did you click on the little triangle? Did you select one of the document files before pressing COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window? If the panel is closed it looks like this:
If you then click on that little triangle gadget you get this:
A temporary solution is to CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the document file, navigate to the Open With item, and select from the sub-menu.
The first method makes the association permanent. This method only applies to the currently selected document.

  • Word Viewer will not open documents from Sharepoint 2013 in IE11

I've run into an issue while trying to open documents from SharePoint 2013 after upgrading to IE11. My organization uses Word Viewer with the compatibility pack and all other Word documents (local files, intranet hosted) will open with no problems. When
trying to open a Word document from SharePoint the Word Viewer will open, but the file does not. We have verified that all Windows Updates are installed. We have tried opening SharePoint in Compatibility View and Enterprise Mode. We have re-downloaded the
latest version of Word Viewer and reinstalled it along with the compatibility pack. If we open the SharePoint site in Explorer view and then open a Word document it will open in Word Viewer with no problem. Excel and PowerPoint documents open from SharePoint
with no problem. This is only affecting Word documents with Word Viewer. When using the full version of Word the documents open fine. Within SharePoint we have tried activating the site collection feature "Open Document In Client Applications by Default"
but it made no difference. We're completely at a loss how to make this work as there doesn't seem to be much information specifically pertaining to issues with Word Viewer.

    Hi Victoria.
    1. The PCs do not have Microsoft Office installed, nor are we using the Office Web Apps. "Word Viewer" means the Microsoft Word Viewer application available here (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=4) that is available
free for read-only viewing of Word documents.
    2. There are no errors when I open Word docs in Word Viewer. The Word Viewer application launches after clicking a Word document link in Sharepoint, but there is no file open in it. When that happens the IE11 Sharepoint window on the taskbar is flashing
yellow, but when I click back to it there are no messages or alerts to click on.
    3. This issue does occur with all Word documents (.doc, .docx) in SharePoint. However, it does not occur when opening Word documents in the Word Viewer when they are local files or through IE11 from a non-SharePoint website like our local intranet.
Those files will open with no problem in Word Viewer.
    4. I will try to get a screenshot, but we are working on creating images for deployment and I don't currently have a machine configured the same way. I'll work on reconfiguring one and post a screenshot.
    Thank you for your help!

  • Error when opening document with ECL control: INVALID_DATA

    Hi Gurus,
I've tried to search the net for this problem but could not find anything and I'm stuck now.
    Description:
we're using ECL to view attached documents (to POs etc.) which are stored through ArchiveLink on the content repository.
when we try to open this document, time-to-time we get following error:
Error when opening document with ECL control: INVALID_DATA
    Message no. SDV004
by time-to-time I mean that when we try to open same attachment again it opens successfully (sometimes we need to re-open it 3-4 times to get it)
what we've tried is to enlarge timeout for HTTP protocol (tx SMICM, from former 30 to actual 60) but only effect we got is that we're waiting for the error longer time
It will be really great if anybody of you guys can give me an advice where the problem can be or where should I look and what to check
    Thanks,
    David

    Hi Christoph,
thanks for tip, unfortunately this was already flagged, currently settings are:
    for Display Settings:
    yes - include ECL control
    use HTML control
empty - maximum viewer wait time
(do you think that setting some value for this could help)
yes - deactivate generic object services in viewer
no - doc display as dialog box
yes - deactivate data provider cache
    Storage Settings:
yes - always copy document class from document type
    yes - permit multiple assignment
    Thanks,
    David

Coes anybody know how do this?
    Thanks

    Hi Miguel
Perhaps when trying to open a word doc you will get an empty word.
If so, modifie the vi as in attached doc to change /n option for an empty string.
In this way, word will open whit your document on screen.

  • Security prompt when opening .msg files in SAP

I have a customer that gets this prompt when opening an attachment in SAP.  The attachment was saved from Outollk so it is in .msg file format.  The customer is using Windows 7, and Office 2007.  This is from the customer:
As discussed, below is a screen shot of the pop up I receive every time when opening an email attachment with T-Code VA02.  I use this function multiple times per day.  Even if I select “Always Allow,”  I continue to receive this pop up.

    Hello Ronald,
Did you try to create a security rule at the SAP GUI?
Access the SAP GUI "options", then "security" -> "security settings". Click at the "Open security configuration" button, and then at the "insert" button.

  • InDesign CS6 (8.1) hangs when opening documents, intermittent

InDesign CS6 (8.1) hangs when opening documents, intermittent, and a document that hangs InDesign, after restarting InDesign, will open fine. I found the following track, Re: InDesign CS5.5 Not Responding  for instructions to "force a hang into a crash" and am posting the crash logs to  pastebin.com
This is the sample process report OPI_Sample9MAY15 - Pastebin.com
This is the corresponding InDesign Crash log OPI_InDesignCrashLog9MAY15 - Pastebin.com
I am hoping that someone might be able to read the logs and tell me what is causing InDesign to hang
For more background information we are using Mac OS X 10.10.3, Within indesign we are using an editorial management software called "NewsEngin GPS" that utilizes Rohohiko's ADIP ToolAssistant plugin and an advertising management plugin "Pagelink" from Mactive/NewsCycle Solutions. These are the only 3 third party vendors that are being used and of course all claim that their products separately are stable under Mac OS 10.10 and InDesign CS6 v8.1.

Did you try to export the INDD file to IDML, open that and work with the new files?
