Disable sub-pixel redering

With the newest Flash players websites display small fonts in
bad colours. This is caused by the sub-pixel rendering the Flash
player applies for font smoothing. On OSX you can choose between
CRT and LCD anti-aliasing, the first staying true in colour, the
latter looking sharper because of sub-pixel rendering. A letter O
for example looks green in the middle, and magenta on bottom and
top.
I hate the looks of the windows ClearType sub-pixel style.
First I thought it was the Windows routine causing this in Flash,
but now I found out Flash text looks crap on OS X too. It seems the
last versions have sub-pixel anti-aliasing built into the Flash
Player itself. We have a lot of trouble with this in site
development. Clients ask us what happened to the fonts.
My questions are:
- Is there a way to change the anti-aliasing behaviour in the
development stage of a site regardless of the OS or user settings
for anti-aliasing?
- If it is dealt with on the client side, can Adobe put an
option with anti-aliasing settings in the Flash Player settings
menu (which lacks tons of other things as well)?
- Which Flash Player is the last one that did not do
sub-pixel rendering (version 7 or 8?). I remember old Flash sites
that did not suffer from this. I want to have 1 machine with the
old player in that case.

Maybe Adobe must start to include a preference panel for Flash in browsers that includes:
- anti-alias settings: off, CRT, LCD sharp, LCD balanced
- sound volume settings
- zoom settings to fill-screen any video or flash site
Now the preference pane is complete useless.

  • Unable to disable sub-pixel rendering on fonts

I have an odd situation with my font configuration where I'm trying to disable sub-pixel rendering but certain applications (notably, firefox) do not seem to be respecting my font settings.
I've tried to disable sub-pixel rendering via fontconfig by creating the relevant symlink:
    # ln -s ../conf.avail/10-no-sub-pixel.conf /etc/fonts/conf.d/10-no-sub-pixel.conf
I have also made sure that this is the lowest-numbered symlink in the /etc/fonts/conf.d directory.
Though I don't think it should matter, I have also ensured that the following files do not exist:
    $ rm -rf ~/.fonts.conf.d/
    $ rm -rf ~/.fonts.conf
    $ rm -rf $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/fontconfig/conf.d/
    $ rm -rf $XDG_CONFIG_HOME/fontconfig/fonts.conf
I'm not running a desktop environment and I am using Openbox as my window manager.  Currently, chromium doesn't use sub-pixel rendering on its fonts though I'm finding that firefox and openbox do display fonts using sub-pixel rendering despite the aforementioned symlink.
I suspected maybe gconf might have something to do with this but I uninstalled it and the problem still persists.
I am confused as to why different applications would display the fonts differently.  Is there some other mechanism for controlling sub-pixel rendering that I am overlooking?

Font newbie question: Does being able to see sub-pixel rendering depend on the monitor you're using?
    Yes, and no.
Yes in the sense that the design of your monitor matters in order for the subpixel rendering to achieve its intended effect.  No in the sense that it will always change the look of your fonts, but it must be properly configured for your particular monitor and in some cases it is simply not going to work correctly.
Sub-pixel rendering doesn't make sense on CRT monitors.  If you are using a CRT, you definitely do not want this.  It is meant to be used on flatscreen (i.e. LCD, OLED, etc.) monitors and it typically allows for a higher effective vertical resolution at the expense of color fidelity.  Some people like this look and some people don't.
The pixel geometry on your LCD monitor matters.  If sub-pixel rendering is turned on, whatever software is rendering your fonts needs to know the physical layout of the red, green, and blue pixel components on your monitor.  On an flatscreen monitor, the left to right order within each pixel is typically red, green, then blue, though this is not always the case.
A monitor with a high pixel density would also make it more difficult to discern whether or not sub-pixel rendering is turned on by virtue of the fact that as pixel density increases, it becomes more difficult to see the individual pixel components.

  • Font smoothing, font sizing, sub-pixel tuning, OS X vs Windows

I have a query regarding font the font smoothing implementation in OS X.
Having just come from the Windows world (using ClearType) naturally comparisons will be made. I am trying to get fonts looking as readable as possible on my Mac. I have 19" LCD connected via DVI so would expect no issues there. It seems difficult to get fonts looking... crisp. I am starting from the basis of using font smoothing across the board as recommended. Turn off smoothing is set to font size 8 or smaller.
I note with respect to tuning of font smoothing (anti-aliasing) that there is not a 'fine tuning' tool like as made available on Windows...
    http://www.microsoft.com/typography/cleartype/tuner/Step1.aspx
for the Mac. At least I can't find anything Googling. And I am not thinking of TinkerTool as that is not a fine tuner. The Windows ClearType tuner can really make a noticeable difference by adjusting the sub-pixel tuning. Is there any equivalent tool/configuration option available for Macs?

You must have extremely good vision to be able to
tell the enhacement made by ClearType on XGA or
better displays. I wish my eyesight is as good as
    yours.
Well by your own admission you must be half blind, and I think you must be if you can't see the difference between - and let's be precise about this - no anti-aliasing vs. anti-aliasing +- sub-pixel rendering. Whether on Windows and/or OS X. There is.
Subpixel rendering is a trick used when resolution of
displays are challenged and small font readability is
    crucial.
Today, the only place this makes sense is on
cell phones when you are trying to render small type
    like a webpage.
I believe the website links I posted show that I have a reasonable grasp of what sub-pixel rendering is, that was not the purpose of my question. Also, actually, you are incorrect when you state that sub-pixel rendering is relevant/necessary only for small fonts. The exact opposite is true - usually sub-pixel rendering (including in OS X) is turned off for small fonts because it tends to make them more unreadable.
On desktop displays today at XGA or greater resolution,
the tradeoff in enhancing a bit in resolution is
outweighed by the added computation cycles needed to
filter the entire display so the eye sees "grey" on
average rather than red or green or blue.
Well you better rush and tell Apple to rip it out of OS X... because they seem to disagree with you as both anti-aliasing and sub-pixel rendering are included, and encouraged to be used, in OS X!
I'm sorry, but your statements are just plainly wrong and unconsidered.
Back to my - still unanswered, factual and valid question. The implementation of anti-aliasing + sub-pixel rendering in OS X does not appear, and I am stating this unbiasedly, to be as good as it could be (as I have seen in Windows). BTW this is not solely my finding as a number of very experienced Mac users have pointed out:
    Here...
    http://www.michelf.com/weblog/2006/subpixel-antialiasing-achilles-heel/
    and here...
    http://www.betalogue.com/2006/01/24/pages-20-does-not-fix-font-smoothing-issue/
    and here...
    http://mjtsai.com/blog/2006/02/04/font-smoothing-in-pages/
I gather from the replies I have received thus far, and from research on the Internet, that there is currently no way - going into Unix config files or by some utility - to address this issue. Hopefully it will be improved in a later version of OS X.
BTW - this does not stop me loving my new Mac!

  • HT4044 What is the acceptable number of sub-pixel anomalies in the MacBook 13 inch?

What is the acceptable number of sub-pixel anomalies in the MacBook 13 inch?

Actually,  I am a technician in training and I was looking for the answer for a discussion I was having yesterday.  I was actually looking for the amount of pixels that can be bad in order for the screen to be replaced.  Here's what the service manual for the Mac Book has to say:

  • PS FW PS + sub-pixel nudge

I downloaded Custom Nudge for FW at http://johndunning.com/fireworks/about/CustomNudge
This is because my understanding is PS wont do sub pixel nudge ( i tried Optipix 3.1 and it did not seem to work right)
    Question is:
Can I import the PSD to FW > make the nudge edit in FW > save or export > open in PS = PSD is exactly as it was (meaning no layers / modes / filters have been altered in the roundtrip edit by FW ?????

Photoshop can do sub-pixel nudges but only when working with vectors as those aren't bound by pixel restrictions. Don't quite see the point in nudging raster layers in sub-pixel increments, all you'll get is messy edges

  • Sub-pixel issues solved?

I got my iPod Video less than a month ago. Today, I was watching some Aqua Teen Hunger Force on it and I noticed some pixels were stuck on red, blue, or green. I did a little research and found that means those sub-pixels are stuck on. I did a little searching around these forums and saw a color test from the diagnostic menu. This was quite helpful once I got to the black screen test. The pixels were obviously showing color. Then I accidently bumped the iPod and noticed different pixels were now stuck and a couple of the ones that were stuck weren't anymore. This got me thinking a little so I gave the screen a flick. After a few flicks, viola! No more sub-pixels stuck on, they work normally now. I think this is a rather annoying issue and I would have thought about returning the iPod if they were truely stuck on. I thought I'd say something about it on here though in case anybody runs into a similar issue.
      Windows XP Pro

To remove the coloring completely, use greyscale instead of subpixel rendering.
However, I would recommend instead finding a compromise you're happy with, e.g. playing with the FIR.

  • HP TouchSamrt 520-1001 (one red sub-pixel on the screen)

    Hello!
Yesterday I bought a computer, and now on the screen I saw a large red sub-pixel. I am very upset, because it costs money. How to solve this problem? How to fix this sub-pixel?
I bought the program JscreenFix, but it did not help. (((

There is a pixel policy and it requires that a specific number of pixels (plural) be bad within a certain radius. One bad pixel does not make a warranty claim. All laptop makers have similar policies. It is a holdover from the days when a laptop screen was much more expensive than now and frankly I think it is time to stand behind the product a bit better, but all you can really do is make a nuisance of yourself and see if they will bend the rules.

  • Does Motion 5 render using Sub-Pixel Rendering, and if not, why not?

I'm curious if Motion 5 uses sub pixel rendering to help smooth out text renders (or any renders for that matter)?  I work professionally rendering graphics for film and tv and most of our work requires Sub Pixel rendering.  I can't find any documentation letting me know one way or the other.
    -Glen

Motion5 is a 'stand-alone'-app, you can use it as your 'special effects maker' for any edit-app, as iMovie, FC/e, or Premiere, or Hitfilm, or whatever...
Even with FCPX, there's actually no round-tripping:
So, export your material from your editor, apply effects, export from M5, import back to editor. Works like charme!
… what you miss: M5 allows creation of titles, transitions, generators, effects as 'plug-ins' for FCPX. So, for repeatedly things, I do not create individual  'projects' again and again, I just built me a plug-in. Example: To insert via an effect the goalies in my weekly soccer-reports, I made me a very elaborated 'title', with a selector menu, and instantly FCPX inserts the correct picture of player, his name, all animated, bells&whistles etc etc.-
You can create this as 'stand alone' projects for any other editor too... less convieniant. But optional.
    No need for FCPX…

  • Is Cleartype able to support both RGB and BGR sub pixel panel displays at the same time?

    Hi,
I am using 2 27' LED displays on my PC. One has RGB sub pixel, the other has BGR sub pixel.
I have problem to tune the font using Cleartype. I have tried to tune all displays a few times and always get the following result.
If I use the RGB one as the primary display, the font on the RGB display looks ok but the font on the BGR display looks weird after tuning using cleartype.
If I use the BGR display as the primary, the font on the BGR display looks ok but the font on the RGB display looks weird after tuning using cleartype.
Basicly, the after tuning with Cleartype, the font on the Primary display looks good but on the other looks weird.
I have also tested with single display setup. i.e. connect only the RGB sub pixel display or the
    BGR sub pixel display.
ClearType tuning works well for single display setup no matter which display I have connected.
But once I connect the 2nd display and tune using Cleartype, the font on the Primary display looks good but on the other looks weird. (The same as above)
To be more specific, the RGB display is Philips 278C4 (connect using HDMI), the BGR display is Dell P2714H (connect using DisplayPort. I have also tried DVI. DisplayPort or DVI give same result).
My system is Win 8.1 Pro x64 JA-JP with all latest patches installed, and my graphic card is nVidia GTX 760, with the latest driver installed.
I suspect this is due to one display has RGB sub pixel panel, and the other has BGR sub pixel panel, which means
Windows ClearType need to take care both RGB and BGR for at the same time. I am not sure if this is fully supported by Windows 8.1 ClearType.
Is there any solution or workaround to make the font on both displays looks nice?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Windows includes several technologies to render text on the screen. These include Windows GDI, Direct Write and Windows Presentation Foundation.
Windows GDI is limited to using one set of ClearType settings per system
while the other two support different settings per display.
It depends. Most LCD screens have a RGB striping order. A very small number have a striping order of BGR.

  • How can I permanently disable the pixel grid for all images forever?

I keep turning this off with View -> Show -> Pixel grid and it keeps coming back every time I zoom in on a new image.
Is there a registry setting I can change to permanently disable this feature? Or any other way?

Perhaps a Prefs Reset will fix this. Hold down ctrl-alt-shift and start Photoshop.

  • How to disable Sub-agreement creation from RFx

    Dear Experts,
We are using Sourcing 10.0 and use Master Agreement Hierarchy instead of Sub-agreement Feature.
However during creating an Agreement from an Awarded RFx;system gives 2 options (See attached)
    New Master Agreement
New Agreement in an existing master agreement (Sub agreement)
As sub-agreement feature is disabled for the Master agreement type system doesn't offer any parent agreement to choose.
so we want to disable this second radio-button, as we want only new master agreement to be created from RFx which we can manually maintain as a Hierarchy under the original Master Agreement.
Kindly advise how to achieve it? Via Page Customization? Which Object/ UI ID to select for this?
    Thanks
    Dhananjay

In page customization and I think you have to use the object "Scenario to contract container"
    Hope this helps

  • Disabled sub-status in appraisal form customizing

    Dear all,
maybe someone could help me with following issue.
I'm customizing a personnel appraisal form using PHAP_CATALOG including several statuses. In order to complete status customizing, I need to activate all sub-statuses of "In Preparation", but all these checkboxes in tab "Status Flow" are disabled.
I already added these new statuses to the category group, so they are definitely available, but I don not understand, why I can not select them.
Does anyone have an idea about this? Are there any requirements to have "In Preparation" sub-statuses active?
    Thanks a lot!
    Tobias

    Hi Tobias,
Apologies for the delay in replying.
    What you can do is:
    1. Create one substatus for "In Planning" as "Supervisor Input"
    2. Once the phap_prepare or BDC is run and all appraisal templates are attached to employees, as per your status flow templates will be in "In Preparation" status. You need not have any pushbuttons created for this status.
    3. Now using PHAP_ADMIN_PA transaction code (administrator's login), push all templates to next status as "In Planning" and substatus as "Supervisor Input".
    4. For this you design pushbuttons which will be accessed by manager.
    5. So when manager will login to portal, he will have the template available for him to take action on the same.
Please let me know in case of any clarifications.
    Thanks!

  • Enable/disable sub screnn

    Hi All,
I am new in ABAP HR. I developed one infotye and it is related to tcode PA30 and PB30.
In my screen one CALL SUBSCREEN SUBSCREEN_HEADER INCLUDING HEADER_PROG HEADER_DYNNR
is there.I want when user click on tcode PA30 then it should be enable and when user click PB30 then
the above subscreen should be disable.we can not write if/endif condition in pbo.
    Please give me solution.
    Thanks,
    Rakesh

Create separate sub-screen as required by the individual Tcodes.
Than in the CALL SUBSCREEN <SUBSCREEN_HEADER> ...statement change the screen number in the variable <SUBSCREEN_HEADER> at run time .
If you don't want to display anything in the screen than create a blank subscreen.
    Best Regards,

  • Lots of dead (sub)pixels Nokia Lumia 520

    Hi everyone,
Yesterday, when I turned off my phone, I didn't see any dead pixel. Today when I turned on my phone I saw this: a lot of dead subpixels. A online phone store in the Netherlands recommended me to send the phone to Nokia, but I don't know if this is coverred under the quarantee, or that I have to pay it by myself. The phone is just one month old.
Should I sent this to Nokia? You can see these pixels only on a black background.

    Hi LH19,
Welcome to the Nokia Support Discussions!
Thanks for posting. If the phone is newly purchased, we advise our customers to check with their retailer about their return policy. The replacement will still depend on the discretion of the Store where you bought them.
If it exceeds the return policy period, you can send it to our Nokia Care Points for evaluation. The warranty period starts on the date purchase. If you are concern if the repair will be covered under warranty, the answer will depend on the assessment of the technician.
For more information about the warranty, you can check this link:

  • Movieclip on Sub-pixel coordinates

I have a long running question that I've never been able to find an answer for.
When animating movieclips if they're not on whole pixel coordinates they will be blurry (if smoothing is turned on). I always have to adjust the coordinates to whole number values which is of course very tedious. Snap to pixel doesn't seem to solve the issue. If I'm useline timeline animation, I have to adjust both beginning and end frames
Does anyone have any suggestions or fix for this?
    thanks!

I've found that if you have ONLY "Snap Align" and "Snap to Pixel" checked in the View menu, you can get a stage object or a movieClip to align to an actual pixel. Moving that object in the same or subsequent keyframe also positions the object to a whole pixel. Do you see something different?  This is in Flash CC 2014.
