Disco Viewer is slow - Maybe drilling data?

I have a Worksheet which when run in Disco Desktop runs and displays in about 1.5 seconds.
When I run it in Viewer it takes 4 seconds to get as far as displaying the title of the report and then a further 50 seconds before the main body of data appears.
I had a look at the HTML Source in Internet Explorer and it amounts to over 5Mb of HTML Source!!!
A bit of investigation reveals that a lot of this is great long lists of drill-related information.
I had noticed that every cell on the report has a little blue arrow for drilling and if I click on this and hover over Drill To Related, I get very long lists of other fields I could drill to.
I wonder whether reducing the drill possibilities to a minimum would speed things up (by 'minimise drill possibilities' I mean restricting the drilling to only the fields that I foresee anyone drilling to.)
(a) Is there a way of restricting drill possibilities?
(b) Has anyone found that adjusting drill possibilities speeds up Viewer?
(c) Any other ways to speed up viewer?
Kind regards
Suhada

Sri.
Actually what I suggesting is pretty simple in that it's 'technology stupid'.
I've found that when most clients say they want their end users to have "drill down" capabilities, what they really want is to just see summary level data in one worksheet and a few detail level worksheets, but all either from the same area (ie: gl_budgets) or by another logical grouping.
So, for example, you could have something like a summary worksheet that showed a salesperson's total sales by customer for an entered time period under a certain sales manager in a summary format (ie: only SUMs on the totals, etc.).
Then, you just know the sales manager is going to want to see a detail level of the same info but maybe show detail info and they have parameters for a time period and choosing a particular customer.
And then, they'll want another worksheet that'll be detail level again, but showing some other aspect of the data.
IMO, it really boils down to say 1 or 2 summary worksheets, and maybe 2 - 3 detail worksheets for an entire area of concern.
As for the parameters, as of 10g you have cascading parameters which allow going between the worksheets easily BUT as you mentioned, if the worksheets go to different folders (and they're not joined of course), then parameters cannot be used across worksheets.
Additionally, you can set up the drilling capability to display what you want in the EUL, but I usually find it's just not needed.

  • Discoverer viewer in portal or Drill to detail in Disco report in Portal

    Hi
    Is it possible to embed discoverer viewer into Portal page. I know one way, I can achieve this in older versions by using <IFRAME src="worksheet url"></iframe> as HTML portlet. But, the problem here is that, our Discoverer viewer is SSO protected. So,I don't want user to single sign on again, as they have already have done that when they got into portal.
    My second question is , I have developed Page-Detail report in Disco plus, also I have Drill to Detail in the same report. Drill to Detail is created using "Manage Link" option. When I deploy this report into Portal using Disco Portlet provider, firstly in portal it is not showing the Page Item, also the Drill through link also is not showing.
    Any help on the above questions would be greatly helpful.
    Thanks
    Balaji

    Hi
    Firstly thank you very much for your response.
    The Disco report I have is a Discoverer Plus report with Drill to Detail to another workbook(developed through manage link). But this Drillable link is not showing in the published Disco portlet. Are you saying that it should in the published disco portlet? .. As posted in previous response , I know this would work from Analyze link(which basically lauches viewer)..
    But users would like to see this drillable link in the report in portal page itself(which means on the published portlet itself). To achieve this only, I used Iframes in Html portlet and showing the Discoverer viewer url. It works fine, but only thing is each time user naviges to portal page, it executes the report which takes some time. I am trying to avoid the execution process. I think one solution is I can just schdule these Disco reports and that way it will not query the database each time. I was wondering if there is any other solution maybe I am missing
    Thanks

  • Viewer slow while retrieving data while changing value from a page item

    Hi, I am using 9.0.2 to create reports. My end-users are using Viewer to run these reports. Recently, we are experiencing performance problems with Viewer. We have reports with Page Item. Let say a report takes 1 min to run. After running the report if a different value is selected for a page item, it is takes another 1 min to get new data. Whereas, Desktop is not taking any additional time (noticable) for a different value for the page item. Recently, we are experiencing this problem. I thought that it was cache problem in Application server, so we restarted all the pieces in aps server. However, the problem still exists. We are using a materialized for this particular report.
    Any tips would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

    The performance differences can be attributed to the differences in product. Desktop is a client server product. A query executes and ALL data is returned to the desktop. You can manipulate that data in any way and the database is not required. Web (Plus/Viewer) only return the data needed to satisfy the query currently being viewed. If you change a page item, a database call is made to retreive additional/different data.
    In other words this is just how things work. You can alter settings in your prefs.txt file to improve performance in Viewer/Plus. Changing number of rows returned, memory settings, row fetch limits, rows per fetch all can improve/reduce performance.
    As best I know there is not a "magic" setting for these values. It is based on the server/volume of data/workbook content/ workbook layout. etc. Crosstab workbooks are much slower to return data than page -detail.

  • Limit on Page-By-Item in Disco Viewer

    Hi There.
    Is there a limit on page by items on Disco Viewer.
    It works fine but as soon as i add more than one page by item no matter the result i select it defaults to <All>
    Regards

    Hi,
    Do you mean that it doesn't filter the data according to the value you selected ?
    I am not aware of a limitation on the page items and for sure you can have more than one.
    Personally I have seen workbooks running under viewer with more than 5 page items.
    What version of viewer do you use? maybe you need to patch it up...

  • How can I get Disco Viewer to remember the user's final filtered worksheet?

    Hi every one:
    How can I get Disco Viewer to remember the user's final filtered worksheet?
    Each time the users login they have to make several operations (drillings, pivots, etc) to get their reports customized as they want. I wonder if is there a chance I could configure Disco Viewer in order to remember the last worksheet layout, and set it as the initial worksheet the next time the user login?
    Thanks in Advance
    Jorge

    Once your users have customised the report to their requirements, they can add the URL of final data diaplay screen to their favourites menu in the browser.
    Next time they want to run the same report, they can access the URL saved into favourites, they'll just need to enter their password to run the report when prompted.
    I know that this works with Oracle Applications user id's, and that the URL "remembers" User Name, Oracle Apps Responsibility, Workbook Name, and Paramteters Used, Table Layout Customisations, and Page Item selections... so in theory it should record Drill information too.

  • Performance Issue with Crosstab Reports Using Disco Viewer 10.1.2.48.18

    We're experiencing Performance Issue (retrieving 40000 rows) with Crosstab Reports Using Disco Viewer 10.1.2.48.18 ( > 01 Minute , executing "Building Page Axis" or executing a Refresh).
    Are there parameters to tun (in pref.txt file) , in order to reduce "Building Page Axis" execution ?
    Note : We've got the same performance problem , using Discoverer Desktop 10.1.2.48.18.
    Thank's in advance for your Help.

    Hi
    Well if the same issue occurs in both Desktop and Viewer then you have your answer. It's not the way that Discoverer is running the workbook its the way the workbook has been constructed.
    For a start, 40000 rows for a Crosstab is way over the top and WILL cause performance issues. This is because Discoverer has to create a bucket for every data point for every combination of items on the page, side and top axes. The more rows, page items and column headings that you have, the more buckets you have and therefore the longer it will take for Discoverer to work out the contents of every bucket.
    Also, whenever you use page items or crosstabs, Discoverer has to retrieve all of the rows for the entire query, not just the first x rows as with a table. This is because it cannot possibly know how many buckets to create until it has all the rows.
    You therefore to:
    a) apply sufficient filters to reduce the amount of data being returned to something manageable
    b) reduce the number of page items, if used
    c) reduce the number of items on the side or top axis of a crosstab
    d) reduce the number of complex calculations, especially calculations that would generate a new bucket
    If you have a lot of complex calculations, you should consider the use of a materialized view / summary folder to pre-calculate the values.
    Does this help?

  • Adjusting the angles of graphs in Disco Viewer or Dashboard by mouse

    Can we adjust the angles(degrees) of graphs in Disco Viewer or Dashboard by just pushing the mouse?
    Thanks

    Hi Disco Newbie
    Gosh, if I could get my hands on some pre-built finanial dashboards for Discoverer just imagine what I can do.
    I'm afraid that dashboards are unique to an organization and what works in one place will not be suitable in another. But of course, it all depends on your definition of a dashboard. The one that I like and the one that keeps me out of mischief is this one:
    A dashboard or dash board is a panel located under the windscreen containing indicators and dials such as the tachometer / speedometer and odometer.
    I bet you never thought it was so easy.
    Seriously, look again at this definition and you will see the foundation of a business dashboard. It's not the dials such as the tachometer, odometer, fuel gauge and temperature gauge that are important. It's not the numbers either.
    What is really important is the meaning or significance (aka KPI) that we apply to those numbers. Thus, depending upon the situation a speed of 100 mph might be considered bad, particularly if being chased by an irate police officer down a busy city street. Do the same thing on a race track and you might be considered a menace for going too slow. But do 100 mph on an autobahn in Germany and no-one will bat an eyelid because it is perfectly acceptable.
    The concept of dashboards in automobiles and in business are the same - they give you a snapshot of critical information at a glance. If you do happen to be running out of petrol the dashboard will automatically start the indicator to bring this fact to your attention upon a certain critical low point being reached.
    Similarly, your business dashboards need to provide all of the critical information that is needed to run your daily operations. They can tell you if you are spending your petrol allowance.. oops I meant to say spending your company cash too fast; what is the cash flow; what is the percentage of patients who needed a repeat visit; how many requests for service were denied this week, and how does this compare with last week - and so on.
    In a business, you can imagine that every employee has a steering wheel and an accelerator pedal but it is not necessary that everyone gets a full-blown dashboard. Since the user roles are different they do not need the same level and kind of information. The worker bees need to work and the managers need to manage. Typically only the higher executives will get the full dashboard priviliges. They want to manage by exception and will only become really interested when something out of the ordinary happens.
    Thus, this is where you ought to begin. You need to find some metrics that when applied against a set of criteria will either have a value above, equal to or below the criteria. Since your boss has the dashboard access he or she can tell at a glance if the company is running out of petrol, or whether the dashboard can be closed for another day and he or she can get back to the golf course!
    Does this brief and hopefully amusing overview of dashboarding help?
    Best wishes
    Michael

  • Is it possible to enable Web Cache gzip compression for 9iAS Disco Viewer?

    Hi,
    Sorry for repeating this question. But it's very urgent and we don't have any idea yet how to solve / work around it:
    To keep it short: Is it possible to use Web Cache gzip compression for pages rendered by 9iAS Discoverer Viewer???
    Our scenario: We have some Discoverer Worksheets which we want to access by ISDN dial in (64 kbit/sec). An average page needs 2 minutes only for sending the html/javascript output rendered by Disco Viewer to the client browser.
    To speed up the response time when users use this slow connection, we want to activate Web Cache gzip compression.
    The problem: But even when we enable Web Cache for Discoverer (configuration.xml and Web Cache rules), Web Cache doesn't compress pages generated by Discoverer Viewer. We found out that the generated responses contain the "content-disposition" HTTP-Header entry. Are we correct that this is the reason why there is no gzip compression? AND DOES ANYONE KNOW A WORKAROUND (p.e. configure Disco not to add the content-disposition http header)???
    Best regards,
    Matthias Scherer

    Matthias,
    Have you raised this as a TAR with Oracle Support? If you've got a specific question, and you need a definitive answer, raising a TAR is the best way to proceed.

    When you set the caching rules, you can also specify whether or not you want the pages to be compressed. Web Cache compresses html pages and relies on the accept-encoding: gzip from the client header to determine whether or not to send the content compressed.

  • ***What is your favorite VI or other software to view large sets of waveform data?

    What is your favorite VI or other software to view large sets of
    waveform data?
    I have to look at waveforms with several sets of y data of 10000 or so
    points. Should I put this into Excel? There are no cursors, or zoom
    capabilities, and so on in Excel.
    Using a graph in LV is very slow when loaded down with this much data.
    Frankly a scope is easier for viewing waveforms. A scopelike utility
    for Windows?
    MathCAD?
    Is there any neat shareware out there?
    Thanks for your opinion,
    Mike

    There are a large number of analysis packages on the market that can display very large datasets. The one to choose depends largely on the nature of the data and what you want to do with it after you have loaded it in. Wandering down the software aisle at your local Staples you will find at least two or three.
    With datsets the size you are contemplating, a major feature to look for is a zoom function that initially shows the entire waveform but lets you narrow in on the data you want to see.
    DIGRESSION ALERT
    Actually, this sort of algorithm isn't to hard to code. I wrote a viewer once that allowed you to view datasets of arbitrarily large size (in V3 I think... though it may have been in V4). The code initally presented an overview of the entire dataset
    by decimating it down to a size that LV could display rapidly. As the user zoomed in using the cursors (not LV's graph zoom) the code would extract the selected portion of the data, redecimate it if necessary and redraw the display. (Which by the way is all the fancy packages really do anyway.)
    The tricky part is selecting a decimation function that retains the overall shape of the data.
    ENDOF DIGRESSION
    Several years ago I wrote an article for a magazine (Personal Engineering and Instrumentation News) that dealt with graphing packages that could handle a million datapoints at that time (late eighties) there were over a dozen programs--and they were all better than Excel...

    Hi,
    According to your post, my understanding is that you want to custom action for context menu in "Site Content and Structure" in SharePoint 2010.
    In "SiteManager.aspx", SharePoint use MenuItemTemplate class which represent a control that creates an item in a drop-down menu.
    For example, to create or delete the ECB menu for a list item in
    "Site Content and Structure", we can follow the steps below:
    To add the “My Like” menu, we can add the code below:
    <SharePoint:MenuItemTemplate
    UseShortId=false
    id="OLListItemLike"
    runat="server"
    Text="My Like"
    ImageUrl="/_layouts/images/DelItem.gif"
    ClientOnClickNavigateUrl="https://www.google.com.hk/"
    />
    To remove the “Delete” menu, we can comment the code below:
    <SharePoint:MenuItemTemplate
    UseShortId=false
    id="OLListItemDelete"
    runat="server"
    Text="<%$Resources:cms,SmtDelete%>"
    ImageUrl="/_layouts/images/DelItem.gif"
    ClientOnClickScript="%SmtObjectDeleteScript%"
    />
    The result is as below:

    HI Have a list view that is bound to xml mapped data.  It seems that on connection refresh that new data is not being updated into the SWF.  My Binding is directly onto the cell ranges that are mapped into excel, so on updates the size of the maped table changes/rewrites over the old data.
    When I refresh I am not picking up the newest data in the list view.  Any thoughts on this on how I can fix.
    Regards,
    Mark

    Thank you Ganesh, but I am not on Enterprise edition.  I am successfully bringing in live xml data, however mapping more than one Query result from one xml file is giving my project some problems.  Refreshing a list View I think is causing this issue.  From within my project in design view I can Refresh the data.
    When I publish the file to html/SWF when I refresh other components are refreshing but the list view and one other is not refreshing.....

    Select all the photos that you need to change, then click the "Photos" menu and choose "Adjust Date and Time".
    If you add a year, it will adjust all the photos that you selected by adding a year (so if you accidentally select one of the photos that already has "2012", that will change to "2013").
