Disconnect idle AFP connections in ML?

Back in Snow Leopard there was an option in Server Admin to set a time limit for idle AFP connections, automatically disconnecting users who are idle for a time period that I set. This option is no longer available in Mountain Lion, as far as I can see anyways. Does anyone know if it is still possible to se this. Perhaps via terminal?

You should be able to set the following keys to enable this feature.   I will admit that I've not tried this but in theory this should work.
sudo serveradmin settings afp:idleDisconnectOnOff = yes
sudo serveradmin settings afp:idleDisconnectTime = 40
The number is the number of minutes (40 in the above example).  There are also the individual flags for the user types.  They are:
afp:idleDisconnectFlag:guestUsers = yes
afp:idleDisconnectFlag:usersWithOpenFiles = yes
afp:idleDisconnectFlag:registeredUsers = yes
afp:idleDisconnectFlag:adminUsers = yes
You can set them with prefixing sudo serveradmin settings to the beginning of each line.
I would clearly suggest testing this with a relatively short time and if it works, reset to a time that you prefer.

  • Idle RDP connections keep disconnecting?

My Windows Server 2012 R2 remote desktop users keep being disconnected from idle sessions.  They get "Your Remote Desktop Services session ended because the remote computer didn't receive any input from you."
Can anyone tell me why? I've change the GPO settings at "Computer Configuration\Polices\Admin Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Session Time Limits" both for the computer and user level but I still
get this. For example I've even set "Set Time Limit for active but idle Remote desktop services sessions" to Enabled with the limit of "Never".
Does anyone know how do I stop this from happening?

    Hi,
Thank you for your post in Windows Server Forum.
Please check that you have also applied setting under Collection properties, session tab For Idle Session limit. I checked in my environment with 1 minute and able to disconnect idle session and then applying “Never” then it’s never ending the RDS session.
For your reference, you can check the registry setting. When you will apply any group policy for idle session you can see the changes in registry.
    Hope it helps!
    Thanks,
    Dharmesh

  • Users have multiple AFP connections on server?

Our server is running 10.6.7 and in Server Admin under AFP connection we are noticing users with multiple connections to server.  The settings are enabled to "disconnect users after they are idle" for 60 minutes and also "allow to sleep for 4 hours" checked.  I have 2 other servers with the same settings that average 60-80 connections but this server continues to average 250+ connections, many of which are multiple users from same IP address.  Does anyone have ideas as to why server isn't reseting connections?

Who says the server isn't resetting connections? How do you know these connections are not active?
It's not uncommon for one user to have multiple connections to a server, depending on your sharepoint configuration. Each shared resource will consume one connection for each user. This means that if your users' home directories are on the server, as well as a group sharepoint and a public share/dropbox, then each user would have three connections. Does that cover your usage?

  • AFP connection interrupted upon wake from sleep

This only happens on my MacBook Pro. MBP. I mount my main Server volume from my Mac OS X Leopard Server via AFP. At night I put my MBP to sleep. In the morning when I wake up I get the message that the "Server connection has interrupted."
No matter what, I either have to click Disconnect or if I don't if will eventually disconnect on it's own and then the message will go away. I can immediately mount the server again after the disconnect message is cleared. I can NOT interact with the volume while the message is on the screen. I must disconnect before I can reconnect to the server.
This doesn't happen on any of my other Macs logging in with the SAME ACCOUNT, so I don't think it's a server issue. Any clues?
I also checked to make sure that the Server was set to disconnect idle users after 75 hours and again I can log on to the same account from a different Mac, put it to sleep, wake it and still be connected (reconnected) to the server no problem.

The serveradmin tool is a Mac OS X Server command available on Mac OS X Server.
For details on the command and command syntax:
    $ man serveradmin
This man page (and the command) are available on Mac OS X Server. This tool is not part of Mac OS X client, nor is this tool apparently installed with the installation of the Server Tools package on a Mac OS X client client box.
You can access the serveradmin command from any platform (Mac OS X, linux, Windows, whatever) that can telnet or ssh into the server box; to initiate a command-level session on the server. And you can access the serveradmin tool through that path.
Or (usually easier) you can use the Server Tools that you've installed, and connect into the server that way. The Server Tools (which are available via the Mac OS X client GUI, and installed with the Server Tools package you have loaded on this system) are located in the /Applications/Server directory. Launch Server Admin, select (or add) the target server, authenticate yourself with credentials appropriate for the server, select the AFP file services, and select (or verify) the setting and behavior for idle connections.

  • 10.7.5 Lion Server limiting AFP connections to 10

I have an Intel XServe, Late 2006 2 x 2 GHZ Dual-Core Xeon with 20GB DDR2-DIMM RAM running Mac OS X Server Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) that has started to limit AFP connections to 10. This is a problems as we use this server to host Network Home Directories for 1/3 of our students (approximately 100 student directories are hosted on this server via a fiber channel XServe RAID).
I know that OS X Server can handle thousands of simultaneous AFP connections...I'm using two other 10.7.5 XServes to host the other 200 student accounts (1 XServe is an Early 2008 2 x 2.8 Quad Core Xeon with 24 gb of RAM running the same OS Build and the other is an early 2009 2 x 2.26 Quad Core with 24 GB of RAM running the same OS X Server build). Both of those XServes currently have between 40-80 AFP connections. Before last week, the oldes XServe was functioning normally, allowing 20-60 connections. For some reason last week, AFP crashed on this system and when I rebooted the server it now refuses to allow more than 10 AFP connections (confirmed by an error message from clients attempting to connect). I know that this behavior is more indicative of OS X client which only allows 10 simultaneous connections. The only messages in the AFP error logs are:
AppleFileServer[172] <Info>: TCP Listener returned error on accept
    repeated over and over again.
Anybody have any thoughts on why this might be happening? After everybody leaves today I'm thinking of disconnecting the RAID from this Server and then attaching it to one of the other two XServes and then re-mapping the the student accounts to the other servers, but I'd hate to decrease my load-balancing as this is already a fairly slow solution as it is.
    Thanks,
    Christopher

I've done some more digging and it looks like the three packages included in the update have about 4000 files that didn't get installed.  A good number of them are .png or .icns files, but there are whole applications (e.g. VNCServer) that didn't get updated.
The system is currently in a state where it cannot install software via Software Update or via Installer.
    Any ideas?

  • AFP connections dropping on 10.8.5 Server

We are experiencing a very odd problem when AFP connections to our server are dropping part way through, which often then makes the client machine crash and force a hard reboot.
AFP logs on the server show nothing, but the /var/log/system.log events below show the disconnection as it happens.
Note I have installed the 10.8.5 Combo Updater, reinstalled the Server.app from the AppStore, experienced the same on various client machines, and seen the same problem.
We have plenty of disk space on both sides and the folder in question are about 40GB.
Disk Warrior on both ends has been used already, nothing interesting found.
Oddly enough connecting via SMB does not cause these problems.
Originally I thought it might be network related, but I tried connecting an Ethernet cable directly between client and server (bypassing the switch) and saw the same problem.
I can only surmise a recent OSX update (not sure if this problem is on the server end or client end) caused this problem.
    Here are the log details:

    Any ideas, suggestions appreciated!

Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved. Back up all data before making any changes.
    Step 1
Delete all sharepoints in the File Sharing tab of the Sharing preference pane. Recreate them one at a time and test each one.
    Step 2
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, select the startup volume, and run Repair Disk (not  Repair Permissions.) If any problems are found, repeat. Then reboot as usual.
If any sharepoints are on a different volume, repair it too.
    Step 3
Boot the server in safe mode and test. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. After testing, reboot as usual and verify that you still have the problem.
    Step 4
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.ByteRangeLocking.plist
Right-click or control-click the line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. Repeat with this line:
    /var/db/BRLM.db
    Reboot.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    Step 5
Reinstall the OS. You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need your backup unless something goes wrong. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it.

  • Server Admin [disabled/asleep] afp connections

    1 OD Master, 10 Replicas
On all the servers (except 1 replica which is connected via a T1 line) I get many AFP connections that have a status of Disabled/Asleep
When I Disconnect these, the server behaves better.
My question: Why is this happening? How can I have the server disconnect these on its own?

Seems that I need to wait for OS X Server 10.5

  • Admin-AFP-Connections

We are having problems with some students logging in. It says they are already on a computer, they are not. Sometimes it happens after a crash. Sometimes it just happens. I then have to go the Admin-AFP-Connections and disconnect them. There seems to be many students in there that are 'disabled/asleep', even if they are not on a computer. Does this refresh? Why does this happen so much? It is a bit annoying to have to continually go there and disconnnect a user.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Folks.
I'm under the impression that a 'home folder' login is one 'event', and the 'volume mounting' is another event. Thus, the two connection entries.
I'm occasionally getting the disabled/asleep entries as well, which usually means it's time to reboot the server... The main server is currently under a heavy load (haven't had time to split the services yet)... So needing to reboot about once a week at present, which isn't the way it should be!
But I'll separate the services onto separate services before long... Bound to help!
    Cheers,
    Derek

  • Afp connections

Is there as way, in Lion Server, to show and if needed, clear AFP connections for individual network accounts?  This was necessary and easy to do on Snow Leopard Server through Server Admin.
    Thanks,
    Peyton Armstrong

not totally what you wanted but so for Lion Server I am relegated to using this command in terminal.
    netstat -n -p TCP | grep ".548"
    or just...
    netstat -n -p TCP
...to see all tcp/ip connections.  I just switched over to lion server for afp and have not found any other commands to orderly disconnect users and so on.  Hope that helps though.

  • Motion crashes on open: AFP Connection Status window appears

I am one of the overly enthusiastic fools who went to the Intel Mac Pro too early--before even Apple's FCP Studio ran reliably on it. (And apparently it doesn't even now.)
But I digress before I begin. Here's my challenge:
Motion--and only Motion--crashes every time I try to open it.
Before it ultimately crashes, this window appears:
    AFP Connection Status
    Looking up "G4MDD"
G4MDD refers to my previous computer, a G4MDD, which I ran networked to the Mac Pro until recently because I had to constantly default back to it to finish projects when the Intel Mac Pro misbehaved inexplicably.
I've followed all of Apples suggestions posted on "Troubleshooting Basics." I've trashed preferences AND reinstalled Motion 2. It's still looking for the G4, I know not why.
From the error report I've sent to Apple time and again, I take the following to be the problem:
    Exception: EXCBADACCESS (0x0001)
    Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE (0x0002) at 0x00000000

  • Can I encrypt an AFP connection

    Hi,
I've got an OSX server configured as a webserver and are using webdav with a SSL cert to allow customers to send and receive files. The only problem with this is that I can't enforce change of password.
Was wondering if we changed it to an afp connection would I still get any sort of encryption (needs to be 128bt). Also I guess I could then enforce password rules.
    Thanks
    Craig

    Dear user495600,
    Please read the following articles;
    http://it.toolbox.com/wiki/index.php/How_to_encrypt_indexed_columns_in_Oracle
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/deploy/security/database-security/transparent-data-encryption/tde_faq.html#A12007
    From the Oracle documentation;
    Transparent Data Encryption
       1. Will encrypted data be decrypted for all users who have been authorized to see it?
       2. What is the overhead associated with TDE?
       3. What are the encryption algorithms that can be used with TDE?
       4. Is it possible to use 3rd party encryptions algorithms in place of the ones provided by TDE?
       5. Can I use TDE column encryption on columns used in foreign key constraints?
       6. Can columns that are used for joins be encrypted?
       7. Can indexed columns be encrypted?
       8. What data types and data lengths does TDE column encryption support?
       9. Does the data stay encrypted on the network?
      10. Does the database memory (SGA) contain clear-text or encrypted data?
      11. How do I know which data to encrypt?
      12. Where is the data that needs to be encrypted?
      13. With Oracle Database 11gR1, shall I use TDE column encryption or TDE tablespace encryption?
      14. How is TDE different from the encryption toolkit Oracle already provides?
      15. How is TDE licensed?
    Number 7:
    # Can indexed columns be encrypted?
TDE tablespace encryption supports all indexes transparently.
For TDE column encryption, the index needs to be a normal B-tree index, used for equality searches. In case of a composite, function-based index, the encrypted column cannot be the one that was used for the function. When encrypting a column with an existing index, it is recommended to first extract the index definition with dbms_metadata.get_ddl, then drop the index, encrypt the column with the 'no salt' option, and re-build the index.http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/11gr1_db/security/tde/tde.htm
    Hope That Helps.

  • External Monitor connects, disconnects, re-connects, disconnects, endlessly

    Hi,
When I physically connect my Lenovo G575 laptop, running win7, to my LG LCD monitor via VGA cable, my laptop will not remain internally connected to the monitor. The laptop disconnects, then re-connects, then disconnects to the monitor repeatedly. So, there is signal feed being sent from the PC and recieved by the monitor, then the disconnect sound is made and the signal stops... then the connect sound is made and the signal is restored to the monitor, over and over again. During connections, the monitor displays as desired. This monitor and VGA cable work flawlessly on my other laptops, but not my Lenovo. I've tried changing the resolution settings on the computer, which does not solve the problem. How do I get the Lenovo to remain connected and feeding signal to the TV? Any ideas? What could the problem be?
I've read the Lenovo owners manual for my model. There was nothing relatively helpful in it.
Adapter Type: AMD Radeon HD 6310M [Computer says "This device is working properly" & is also up to date]
    Driver Version: 8.792.2.4000

    Robert,
My wife's MacBook exhibits the EXACT same problem. The speed drops from around 3,100kbps to as low as a lousy 80kbps as soon as the external monitor is connected. I get 3,200kbps on my desktop, which is NOT on wireless.
Her monitor (ViewSonic LCD flat panel, I believe) is connected directly to the MacBook, as it came with the appropriate connector.
It's very discouraging that you don't have an answer yet after two months.
The next step has to be to bring the MacBooks back to Apple for replacement of the internal airport card.
    Thanks for having posted this.

  • Xbox disconnects when laptop connects to network

My Xbox 360 disconnects from the network everytime my laptop connects. I have static IP on my 360 and automatic IP on my laptop.
I tried putting my Xbox on automatic, still didnt work.
I tried putting my laptop to manual - it worked but I can't leave it like this because I connect to different networks (school, home, work, etc).
Other computers/consoles dont get disconnected when I connect with my laptop.
Can anyone help me out? Thanks!

As you are already using static Ip on X-BOX, forward ports 88 & 3074 for the same Ip
    Also try this setting:
    Channel – 1or 11
    Beacon interval – 75
    RTS & fragmentation threshold – 2306

  • My iphone 4s connects and disconnects (repeatedly) when connected to my computer

my iphone 4s connects and disconnects (repeatedly) when connected to my computer, it works perfectly fine when connected to regular chargers, everytime i connect it to my computer it shows the charging symbol and then disconnects and reconnects in less then a second, it will repeat this process forever unless disconnected, sometimes it works perfectly fine and most of the times it does the same thing, I know for a fact its not the wire because i recently bought an ipad mini with retina and its usb is new, it worked with the retina for a day or two and then it kept connecting and disconecting repeatedly, my computer is two months old and i have new hardware in that machine, is it a problem in the usb power fluctuation? i am currently using windows 8.1 and i need solutions, this is super annoying, all my other devices work perfectly fine with the usb ports, all my usbs (2.0 and 3.0) do the connecting and disconnecting sometimes it even works ,what is the problem?

    Hello Aqib2024,
Thank you for providing the details of the issue you are experiencing with your iPhone 4s.  You have taken some really good steps to isolate the issue.  I recommend following the steps in the article below to further isolate and troubleshoot this issue:
