Disk Image = "broken Pipe"

I am using a iMac with OS 10.4.11. Recently had hard drive crash and had to put in a new hard drive. I was down loading two apps (fruit menu and skype) to re-install. I got the .dmg disk image icons on desktop, but when I double clicked to unpack, I got a window that said error due to a "broken pipe" My local service center couldn't say what was going on. Any ideas?

I have two Macs: the offender above, and an eMac G4 800 MHz, both running OS X 10.4.8. Lately, my iBook has refused to mount Disk Images (.dmg format), instead giving a "broken pipe" error.

Sorry about the length, but I thought someone might need it.
The eMac still mounts disk images with no problem.
I've never run VPC on this machine, so this isn't tied to the VPC disk mounting bug I've seen on the lists.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Merry Christmas!

I solved the error by installing the OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update. This update was in a .dmg file, of course, but I mounted the disk image on my eMac and then copied the update to the iBook. Goes to show the advantage of having 2 machines in case one breaks.
    HTH someone else.

  • Disk Images Failing to Mount: Reason - Broken Pipe

Ever since the recent 10.4.9 patch, I have been unable to install .dmg files onto my MacBook. Everytime I try to execute a .dmg file, I get the following error:
    Disk Images failed to mount:
    Program: Messenger602.dmg
    Reason: Broken Pipe
I have absolutely no clue as to what it means. I've used the Disk Utility in order to repair the disks and permissions without any luck. I've restarted my computer a couple of times and that failed. I've also checked the forums on the subject and there were some topics on the subject but none of them were able to fix my problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Cheers

It turns out that the 10.4.9 patch didn't install fully and corrupted some system files which is why I was unable to open .dmg files.
I just ran and Archive and Install and everything works fine now!
Hope this helps to anyone who has the same problem

  • Disk Won't Mount - Broken Pipe

I'm no longer able to mount disk images that I have downloaded. Double-clicking on the downloaded .dmg gives me a cryptic message: "The following image failed to mount." "Reason: Broken pipe"
I attempted to mount it using the hdiutil command and got the following:

So far I have done the following:
    Repaired permissions
Verified disk with Disk Utilities (passed verification)
    Rebuilt directory with DiskWarrior
    Checked file structure with DiskWarrior
Ran Tech Tools Pro 4.5.1 to repair structures & files

Purged all caches with both Cocktain & Cache Out X
    Zapped the PRAM
Anything I can do, short of a system re-install? I've got a (Intel) Mac Pro running 10.4.9 -- It seems to have happened after downleading the 10.4.9 upgrade via Software Update.
    MacPro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I too accepted the Software Update, as I always have in the past, and so I downloaded the 10.4.9 update on my MacPro. The installer for the System Update (third installer to run, after Quicktime and iTunes) gave me the "disk image failed to mount: broken pipe" message. From then on I have not been able to mount any DMG files.
If I use "hdiutil mount" in Terminal on any DMG I get this sort of output:

So if I remove the "DiskImages" folder that contains "/Library/Plug-Ins/VirtualPCDiskImagePlugin.bundle" (a suggestion I found at Macintouch) I get a smaller subset of the same message (though why would hdiutil have anything to do with VirtualPC in the first place) :

A search for the term "_DIGetLocalKey" in Google returns NO links. Nothing at all in billions of webpages? What's with that? However, I've seen enough posts on this very topic to see that it has been a common experience for the update to 10.4.9.
Other than going back to 10.4.8 and using the Combo Installer, is there something that can be done to fix this specific problem?
For example: Might there be a problem in the DiskImages Framework?
    MacPro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

  • I recently downloaded is x mountain lion and while it finished it erased all my data, some of which I need. When using disk utility I found my old data but it says corrupted. I can't repair and while restoring the error code 32 Broken Pipe appears. Help?

My data I need is on my computer but it needs to be repaired but can't and when I try to restore it/back it up it ends abruptly with error code 32 broken pipe.
It was damaged while installing os x mountain lion and I found my data on disk repair (utility)

Sounds like your hard drive is badly corrupted, likely due to problems that were already there when you started trying to install Mountain Lion. The problem is, if you don't have any backups already, you may not be able to recover all your data from this state. Do you have backups of that data already?
If not, I assume when you say that "it needs to be repaired but can't," you mean that Disk Utility tells you there is a problem with the disk, but that it is unable to repair it? If so, you can try repairing the drive using DiskWarrior, which can repair problems that Disk Utility cannot. That may give you access to your data again, but may not.
Also, it's important to understand that if your data is not backed up, everything you do with the computer runs the risk of overwriting or corrupting that data. You may want to go straight to trying to recover your data. See Recovering deleted files.
Regarding the error code, if you're trying to back up the drive using Disk Utility's Restore tab, note that that is often not successful when the drive you're trying to back up is corrupt.
Once the situation is resolved - either because you have backups, are able to recover your data files or are forced to accept that they are gone permanently - you will need to erase the hard drive and reinstall the system and all your apps from scratch.

I just recently installed 10.4.9 and now I can't mount any disk images. I get an error saying broken pipe. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

    I just recently installed 10.4.9 and now I can't
mount any disk images. I get an error saying broken
pipe. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
    Here's what MacFixit says :
Disk images not mounting [Updated] Several users report an inability mount disk images after applying the Mac OS X 10.4.9 update.
If you are having a problem where disk images won't mount, try booting in Safe Mode (by holding down the Shift key while starting up), then re-attempting mounting of the disk image.
This solution is particularly useful for the following scenario: You want to try re-application of the Mac OS X combo updater (a common workaround for issues that occur after an incremental Mac OS X update), but are unable to mount the combo updater disk image.
Prior to booting in safe mode, however, you can delete the following files:
    * /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache
    * /System/Library/com.apple.kernelcaches
and re-attempting the mount. These, and other cache files, are automatically deleted when you boot in safe mode, but you can potentially save some time by trying deletion of these files (then logging out and back in) first.
Another option is to use an alternative tool that can mount disk images, like Mount.app, FlashMount, or Toast Titanium.
MacFixIt reader Joy Denton is one user who had success with our posted workaround:
"Just wanted to let you know that I had the issue of Disk Images not mounting. This occurred after installing Mac OS X 10.4.9 from Software Update. Fortunately, I read your post regarding a possible fix by using the Combo Update and used Toast to mount the disk image. Ran the Combo Update and ran AppleJack once again. I am now able to mount disk images. This was an annoying problem to be sure."
But imho the best advice that can be given about software updates is to always have a clone of your system on another partition or external HD so you can boot on it if anything goes wrong. From an external system you can repair your internal disk, install the Combo update if the incremental one failed, etc.

  • Disk image failed to mount.

    Hi,
While updating the latest Intel update for a Macbook Core duo 1.83, the progress bar got stuck near the end and so I did 'force quit'. Ever since then I am unable to open .dmg files. I get this message " The following disk images failed to mount". " 'application name' broken pipe".
What can I do to fix this problem?

It's hard to say if your disk image problem is related to the force quit install. There are disk image problems with 10.4.9 that you can encounter even if the install was successful. I am running into them and so are some users reporting on MacFixit.com (scroll down to Disk Images Not Mounting).

  • Mounting .dmg failed--broken pipe

I've just upgraded to Tiger to try to solve this problem, but it did not help.
    What can I do now?
I have something corrupt that does not allow .dmg files to set up and can't prepair the disk image to open....Mounting Failed--broken pipe.
However, the file shows up in my download file at the correct size, when i try to open it with Disk Image Mounter (right click) nothing happens.
I was hoping that upgrading os would correct this, but no. This 'broken pipe' must be a clue. Am I missing some file? What could it be. I do not want to do an archive and install if I can help it.

Hi Richard, Welcome to Apple's Users Help Users Forums.
I have seen 'broken pipe' on these forums. Do a search on pipe and see what you find.
    Good Luck, JP

I've got some instances of same error from pacman which I think is abnormal when I tried to upgrade pacman-keyring via "pacman -Syu".

  • Warning - Broken Pipe

    Somebody! Please help!
Every time I download any file in .DMG format, it fails to mount. I get a square box Warning that says: The Following Disk Images failed to Mount:
then it says the name of the downloaded image and a reason. The reason is always the same- it says: Broken Pipe
There is nothing on this in Apple's knowledge base or in the support area. I'm lost.....

    hi thewex,
This is a copy/paste from MacInTouch. It might apply to you.
    "Matt Ruben
Great coverage on Tiger. I just experienced - and solved - a very nasty conflict between Tiger and Virtual PC 7. It's a bit long and complicated, but I've provided a short version too.
    SHORT VERSION:
    - A VPC helper application breaks Tiger's Disk Utility and all disk- related applications.
    - Trashing the helper app fixes the problem, and still allows VPC to function (though it may not be able to mount some types of disk images)
    LONG VERSION:
    (1) There's a VPC Disk Image handler bundle that lives in /System/ Library/Plug-ins. I assume it helps VPC mount certain disk images.
    (2) Upon upgrading to Tiger (via an "archive and install"), when you first launch VPC, it says you have to reinstall certain VPC components. These include the Disk Image handler and a couple of kernel extensions - components which are in subdirectories within / System/Library and are thus not transferred over by the archive and install process.
    (3) The VPC Disk Image handler, when installed, prevents Apple's own diskmounter helper from working. As a result, all attempts to mount DMG files in the Finder fail with a "broken pipe" error; Disk Utility will not launch; Toast Titanium will not launch; and, I presume, any application that interacts with the diskmounter helper will fail.
    (4) Moving the VPC Disk Image handler to the trash immediately restores all of the lost functionality of the Finder, Disk Utility and Toast Titanium.
    (5) The Good News: VPC will still launch and function after the Disk Image handler has been trashed. I do not know if it is still able to mount disk images, however - haven't had a chance to test it."

  • Dmg mount failed - broken pipe

Hi. My Intel Mac mini is refusing to mount every dmg I download: Firefox, EyeTV update etc etc. Reason: Broken pipe.
    Any solutions folks?
    Thanks in anticipation.
    Mike Owen.

    Do the following
With the mbp turned on, insert install disk 1, then shut down the computer. Restart the mbp holding down the "C" key until you come to a screen that says "use english as main language."
Select english and click the continue arrow one time only. Allow the installer to launch, but do not continue with a reinstall. Instead, go to the "utilities" menu in the top menu bar and select "disk utility."
Once disk utility asks you to select a drive, volume or image, select "Macintosh HD" (unless you have renamed your boot volume.)
Make sure you are on the "first aid" tab. From here you can repair permissions and verify disk. I would advise doing both. If disk verification fails you can also repair disk.
Doing this may address any issues caused by repeatedly being powered off manually.
    Hope it helps

Ran into this problem this afternoon. Had to download after the latest version failed to start after progressively becoming a bit tweeky. Got the failed to mount message also broken pipe, even though I am running 10.4.
I went into Mac OS Updates and downloaded the latest version of Java Script. After restart I was able to mount the new Firefox and it seems to be working now.

I can hear my guitar and record with Audacity, but when jackd enter into the escenario everything blows up. I read that nowadays almost any sound card will work with QJackCtl with the default options. I play with the parameters and sometimes jack refuse to start. With the default options on i can make it run, but i get no sound of the racks or guitar effects processors neither the guitar tuners that use jack takes the sound from the guitar. My line input is in capture via alsamixer, but still no luck. Any clue on this? I'm skipping steps?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Disk images not mounting

Here's the question: how come .dmg files downloaded from apple.com (amongst other places) won't mount?
Here's the detail: This has to be a FAQ going by Google searches. I've downloaded the Mac Firefox DMG 3 times, and the Safari DMG from apple.com once, and when I try to mount the images I get a range of different cryptic errors, including "codec overrun", "not recognized", "error -some number or other", and so on. Sometimes, I get two different errors for the Safari image.
Existing disk images on my hard drive mount fine. Today my hard disk has been playing up, with files being corrupted, keychain being broken, prefs disappearing, and so on. I boot from the Tiger DVD, run Disk Utility and Repair Disk, tells me no repairs carried out as all hunky dory. Use Disk Utility on the HD to check permissions, those are fine. Run Onyx maintenance, all is fine. I've not changed the router prefs at all, so it's not that corrupting the downloads.
All was fine until mid-afternoon today, when a number of apps (Firefox, Safari, Dreamweaver) started behaving strangely and the machine kept on hanging. On restart a number of taskbar icons became question marks, so something's being corrupted. Some downloaded PDFs became corrupted.
What I might try to do is download DMGs from my work PC, put them on a stick, and try to mount them. If the problem recurs then that would eliminate download errors.
My conclusion is that either the OS has become damaged, or the HD is physically fubar'd, or at least has some physical errors on it somewhere which DU isn't picking up. If the latter I'm screwed as I'm out of warranty and I might as well chuck the machine in the bin, so let's hope it's the OS. I could reinstall the OS (again) but a) that would be highly time-consuming as I'd also have to reinstall a shedload of apps, prefs, configs, etc, and b) if there's a physical HD error it'll do zero.
I've already spent some fruitless and frustrating hours today on diagnosis, and having done tech supp in my career I know what to look for, so this is my last throw of the dice to try to get some kind person to suggest a) a diagnosis, and b) suggestions for a cure.
Without a cure I might as well take a clawhammer to the thing and get a Linux laptop. Ok, PCs are far inferior to Macs with crappy hardware, but at least you don't lose over a thousand quid when your PC laptop fails.

I was able to get a partial fix of this problem by following instructions that I found on the All Experts web site:
Regarding disk images and mounting media:
delete the following files and folders:
    * /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache (file)
    * /System/Library/Extensions.mkext (file)
    * /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernelcaches (folder)
(Note that after deleting these files you need to reboot your Mac for the fix to take effect.)
All of these files and folders were date 18 Aug 2009, which is in around the timeframe when I installed the last security update for OS10.4 ppc.
I say the solution is a partial fix, because it did allow me to open some, but not all .dmg files (the problematic ones are showing a checksum error). Now I find that iTunes will not operate (yeah I know that should be another thread), but I have not used it in several weeks, prior to the last OS update.
