Disk IO for redolog buffer- isnt it a performance issue also ?

hi guys,
i am a noob but i have a curious question to ask.
hope you guys dont mind helping me out abit,
as we all know, disk io is an expensive operation, so oracle would rather keep the blocks in the db buffer cache as long as possible then to write them down everytime a commit occurs.
however
wouldnt writing and fetching from the redo log file into the redo log buffer an expensive operation as well ? especially it is a on 3 second basis ?
let say i just retrieve a empty block from my redo log file, fill in just 1 row. then it get written back to file. then again i make a update, the same block is retrieve again to fill up aganother row, then 3 second it is written back. wouldn't this be a expensive operation too ?
i know it must be done, to make sure every recorded changes make to the data blocks is written to disk as soon as possible as if we keep it long in the redo buffer, and the instance crash, we would have lost both the data and the changes recorded. so thats the only way out..
but is my theory right ?
thanks.
-noob

oraclewannabe,
redolog io is always completely sequential, and records are always appended.
datafile I/o is random or sequential.
as long as you don't locate your online redolog on i/o bound disks or raid-5 disks,
there shouldn't be a problem.

  • Insufficient Disk Spave for logging historical data

I am recieving an error prompt which reads "Insufficient disk space for loggong historical data." At which point I can no longer log any data. I am using Labview version 6.1, I have deleted all data from my database at well as from my syslog folder (just in case one of them was corrupt). However the problem re-occured shortly after this was done. I also changed the location (in DSC) of where my data was being stored, and this did not work either. Any suggestions?

    Greetings,
The first thing that you may want to check is to ensure you have enough disk space on the particular drive that you are logging to. This could be the direct cause if you are running out of HD space. Assuming that this isn't the case, I would check to see if you have any deadbands set up on the tags or if the deadbands are set to zero for the tags you are logging. The logging buffer could be overflowing if the tags are constantly changing and DSC is trying to log all values. Lastly, check and make sure that the tag engine is still running at the time you receive the error message. If it is, open it up by double-clicking on the icon in the system tray(in the bottom, right-hand corner of Windows, by your time) and make sure that "log data" is still c
hecked. Hopefully the solution will present itself by checking these things. Have a good day.

  • How do I access Disk Utility for 10.7.1?

How do I access Disk Utility for 10.7.1? I found it in the forums a few weeks ago, used it, then lost the directions. This is a last ditch attempt
to use OS Lion. I parted my hair incorrectly when I installed and have been plagued by the dread rainbow spinning ball in EVERY application. Yes, every. Name one, Safari, Firefox, Text Edit, Mail, Excel, Word, iTunes, Garage Band, Calculator, Calender, iPhoto....yes, every, and I cannot
find a solution that works. I have back up files on two different hard drives 500 gig and 1 terrabyte with all my music, photo and writing files.
I am a writer and a musician so imagine the frustration. OS 10.6 is an option of course. My dedication to Apple and each new OS is deep so
I am hoping that somehow there will a fix, an upgrade, something that does not require me to go bac to the much more endangered species named OS.
hahhaa! Just stalled waiting for the ball to finish with it's random spinning.... SO, this is like a last desperate .... it just did two more stalls.
NO OTHER apps running, just little Firefox holding on for dear life, last desperate request for a fix.
MacKeeper has been great in sending helpful directions for getting the Antivirus to work after it mysteriously decided to stop working, Quite MacKeeper,  go to Activity Monitor, force quit helper, start up MacKeeper and run program. It works!
SO before my third stall stops me, please post directions to open disk utility in administration mode so that I can do any further repairs that have not worked by using it from the open system. Also keychain synching stopped working with Lion.
Thanks to any and all who can help.

Press and hold Command-R keys and reboot. You'll then start up in the Lion Recovery HD. You'll find Disk Utility there.
    Command-R to the rescue.
Just hold down Command-R during startup and Lion Recovery springs into action. It lets you choose from common utilities: You can run Disk Utility to check or repair your hard drive, erase your hard drive and reinstall a fresh copy of Lion, or restore your Mac from a Time Machine backup. You can even use Safari to get help from Apple Support online. And if Lion Recovery encounters problems, it will automatically connect to Apple over the Internet.

  • How do I create a disk image for windows 7, using a windows computer for USB bootcamp for mac?

Hi There, I have just bought a new 2013 iMac.
    Spec: 3.4 GHz intel core i5, 16GB 1600 MHz DDR3 Memory , NVIDIA GeForce GTX 775M 2048 MB Graphics with OS X 10.9.4.
How can I create a 'disk image' from a windows 7 professional 64bit installation DVD using a windows laptop with windows 7 Operating system on? I want to transfer this 'disk image' (ISO?) to a USB ready for installing windows onto my 2013 iMac using bootcamp?  I want to use bootcamp from a USB as I have no disk drive for the installation DVD on my iMac. I hope all this is clear.
    Thank you. Joe

Yes, that's correct, at least not directly. You can create a blank disk image, copy the file to the mounted disk image, then burn the image to a CD/DVD.
Open Disk Utility and select Blank Disk Image from the New menu. Provide a name, Save location, and select the image size from the drop down menu. Leave Encryptions at None and Format as read/write. Click on the Create button.
After the image file appears the "removable" disk should be automatically mounted. If not double-click on it to mount it. A "removable" disk icon will appear. Drag the file you want to place on the disk image to the "removable" disk icon. The eject the "removable" disk icon. Now select the disk image file in the DU left side list and click on the Burn icon in the DU toolbar. Be sure to have a blank disc ready.
The above is actually the "long" way to do this. A much easier way is to simply insert a blank CD or DVD into the optical drive. The Finder will pop up a dialog asking what to do. Select the option to mount on the Desktop. You will now see a disc icon on the Desktop. Drag the file you want to burn to the CD/DVD, right-click or CTRL-click on the disc icon and select Burn from the contextual menu.

  • Unable to save PDF's from Internet Explorer. Error "The document could not be saved. The disk you were saving to or the disk used for temporary files is full. Free some space on this disk and try again, or save to a different disk."

We are currently in a published desktop environment in Citrix XenApp 6.5.  Server is running on Windows 2008 R2.  Users are not able to save PDF's into the redirected folders (ie Desktop or My Documents).  Exactly same issue described in "The disk you were saving to or the disk used for temporary file is full...."  Anyone has any suggestion??

    Same problem here. Any ideas?

  • Can't enable disk use for restored shuffle

My shuffle stopped playing music in March. I continued using it as a removable disk. I tried the restore utility and it worked - now my shuffle plays music again. However the latest iTunes (7.0.1 and 7.0.2) has no checkbox to enable disk use for when the Shuffle is connected. The checkbox is there for a 5G iPod but not for the Shuffle.
So - now it works as an iPod but no longer works as a disk. What is going on here? How can I enable disk use?

iTunes 7.0.2 is still displaying that checkbox for both of our local Shuffles.
Perhaps you just need to scroll down to find it. If it's actually not there then I'd have to think that this is an iTunes question, not an iPod one, and might be better placed in those forums.

  • What is "Disk 2" for in the packaging for Premiere Elements 9? Content or installation need?

I just got the Premiere Elements 9 yesterday and used "Disk 1" for the installation.  There is NOTHING that I found in the packaging materials to explain what "Disk 2" is used for.  Is it needed for further installation?  Content?  I hesitate to just put it in the DVD tray without knowing what it is to be used for.  I did download the full templates content last night (4 1/2 hours for nearly 5GB of a file).  Thanks for any information anyone can provide me.

    Bill,
Thank you for your comments!  I figured that maybe, possibly someone in the
Adobe higher up level might monitor the forums, see my posting(s) and see my
point.  A few years ago I had gotten the second or third generation of
Premiere and Photoshop Elements and have had them on my main computer.
    Still do.
I just got a laptop and earlier this spring I got a Flip HD Slide camcorder,
but trying to convert those videos to burn on DVD has proven to be a pain.
I only found one or two software packages that could convert the MPG4
formats, and they take forever to format.  So I thought that I'd get PE9
since I'd read that it had Flip video compatibility.  It did a good job
yesterday doing what I wanted it to do in burning a DVD.
I'm old school on labeling the installation disks.  Like you said, years ago
Adobe (and other software companies, for that matter) had pretty good
installation and reference cards for use.  I just wasn't quite sure what to
do with Disk 2.  I got on the Live Chat yesterday morning with a ViJay Kanna
and all he could come up with was to contact tech support.  So I called that
800 number and got the message that it would be $39.95 for them to answer
    questions.
I decided that I'd better find a better way, so I hung up and found the PE9
forum.  Posted my question and had a response in just a matter of minutes.
I'll certainly be checking in on the forums!  It is nice when other
contributors actually provide good, solid information, advice, and support
    for each other!
I just got back from our town square, using my Flip camcorder to get some
shots of Santa arriving with his police escort to visit with some Fairfield
children before heading off on his rounds.  I'm looking forward now to see
what I can put together on PE9!
Have a great holiday and thank you for your support and thoughts.  They are
much appreciated.  Maybe someone at Adobe will change their disk labels
after all! That is one of my 'wishes' for Santa!
    Sincerely,
    Richard K Thompson

  • Using disk images for learning games?

Hello, I've 2 g3 imacs running 9.2.2, and they are for the grandkids to use learning games on.
The kids are very hard on the software disks. When I found out about disk images I made them up, now to install them properly. The games are installed, but where to store the disk images? The desk top icons for the games will work after the disk images have been double clicked and the mounted disk image appears on the desktop, but when the imacs are turned off the mounted disk image is lost. How or where does one put the disk images in a safe place so the kids don't get at them, and the disks are mounted every time, without actually starting, when the Mac is started? Start up menu?
I'm planning on multiple accounts with them having a standard account with game privileges so they don't mess the whole thing up. If their accounts get too messed up for me to repair I figured on maybe deleting the account and opening up a new one? Any Ideas are very welcome.
    Thank you,
    EZ

    Hi, EZ -
    You're quite welcome.
I had a thought with regard to the disk image files. Are they in a .smi format, or are they in a .img format?
The .img format requires the assistance of the Disk Copy utility in order to mount the image. This is the standard format generated by the user version of Disk Copy. It requires that Disk Copy be available to Finder to act as a helper app in order to mount the image.
The .smi format does not - .smi stands for Self-Mounting Image. The user version of Disk Copy can not make this format; but I have seen a utility to convert .img format to .smi format. The slight advantage with this format is that Disk Copy does not need to be available to Finder.
In both cases the default is to run a checksum verification before the image is finally mounted. The delay caused by this verification can be inconvenient - verification is intended to confirm the integrity of the image after it has been copied, transported, or downloaded, but is usually not necessary when the image resides on a hard drive.
The checksum verification for .img file types can be removed. With the image not mounted, open Disk Copy. In Disk Copy's Preferences (Edit menu), uncheck the Verify Checksum item. Save the Preferences window. Then select Convert Image from the Image menu, navigate to the disk imge file from which you want to remove the verifiaction, select it and click the Open button. A new window will appear, similar to a Save As type window. Leave everything in that window untouched (unless you want to change the base name of the file - the extension .img should be left intact) and click the Save button. The image will be mounted, the original disk image file will be deleted, and a new disk image file created. Unfortunately creating the new image file takes quite a while since it is creating a new one, not actually modifying the old one - but it does get rid of the intrusion of the checksum verification requirement.
I verified on my G4/500 running OS 9.1 that a .img file (one I had made from a game CD years ago) dropped into the Startup Items folder will be mounted automatically at the end of the startup sequence. I also tested with an alias to the .img file, and it, too, worked fine - the disk image was mounted automatically at the conclusion of the startup sequence.
When you make the alias to the disk image file (the .img one), be sure you are placing it into the Startup Items folder, and not the Startup Items (disabled) folder.
If you have the machine set to use Simple Finder (which removes Finder's keyboard commands and many menu options for Finder), that may interfere with items in the Startup Items folder being run at startup. Or, it may not - I have not checked that.
    *** Edit ***
I have verified that the alias to a .img file will mount the disk image even when the machine is booted using Simple Finder.
Another thought, related to Multiple Users - if you do decide to set up Multiple Users, and the disk images are of type .img, be sure to authorize Disk Copy for each of the accounts for which the disk images are to be mounted. If you have the disk image files in a .smi format, since Finder views that file type as being an application, you would need to authorize each of those disk image files for each account which is to have access to them.

  • Best practice DISK Layout for E-business suite 11i or R12 in SAN enviornmen

    Hi,
Does any one have any document on best practices on DISK Layout for E-business suite 11i or R12 in SAN enviornment?
    My thoughts are :
    Mount point 1 =Oracle Binary
    Mount point 2 =Data files
    Mount point 2 =Index files
    Mount point 2 =Archived logs
    Please suggest

On our HPUX node, we have each environment (PROD, TEST, DEV) on it's own separate mountpoint. Each mountpoint is a separate LUN (Vdisk) on our SAN (an HP EVA4400). No performance issues at all. Our Windows nodes runs Apache and forms, and that is on the internal disks on the windows machine itself. Hope this helps.

    Hi,
I am getting the following exception when i trying to insert data in to a table through a stored procedure.
oracle.apps.fnd.framework.OAException: java.sql.SQLException: ORA-01801: date format is too long for internal buffer
when execute this stored procedure from ana anonymous block , it gets executed successfully, but i use a OracleCallableStatement to execute the procedure i am getting this error.
Please let me know how to resolve this error.
Is this error something to do with the Database Configuration ?
    Thanks & Regards
    Meenal

I don't know if this will help, but we were getting this error in several of the standard OA framework pages and after much pain and aggravation it was determined that visiting the Sourcing Home Page was changing the timezone. For most pages this just changed the timezone that dates were displayed in, but some had this ORA-01801 error and some others had an ORA-01830 error (date format picture ends before converting entire input string). Unfortunately, if you are not using Sourcing at your site, this probably won't help, but if you are, have a look at patch # 4519817.
Note that to get the same error, try the following query (I got this error in 9.2.0.5 and 10.1.0.3):
    select to_date('10-Mar-2006', 'DD-Mon-YYYY________________________________________________HH24:MI:SS') from dual;
It appears that you can't have a date format that is longer than 68 characters.

  • How to allocate disk size for each user in iMac?

    Hi folks,
I have iMac (Mac OS X, version 10.7.5) for Family, and each of my family member has account on it.
Now, kids download many large files (several GB size files) and HD is getting full.
So, I'd like to set maximum disk size for each user.
Could you prvide instruction how to configure disk size for each user?
    Regards,

I don't know of any way to do that by user.
I used to partition my HD and that sets a hard limit by partition, but by user? I don't think it can be done.
