Is there a Mpeg Streamclip support forum?

Is there a Mpeg Streamclip support forum?
I'm trying to convert AVCHD files on a Powerbook G4 and get an "Unsupported File Type" error.
VoltaicHD is able to convert the same AVCHD source file in question.
Any help would be much appreciated!

no, but Stefano is a very helpful person:

afaik, AVCHD isn't supported by SC, only the .mts files within the AVCHD-folders..

I know they both should match. Question is, should I re convert the clips in mpeg using different size settings? Or should I change the sequence settings? how?

  • MPEG Streamclip problem

I use mpeg streamclip but when i try to convert avi to mp4 or whatever itunes is capable of having and it takes all this time to convert or watever and then when i finaly get it on itunes i replay the movie and it is black with no audio.
p.s. The movie plays fine before i try to convert it and i have tried several and no progress.
    Pleeeez help me!

There could be several reasons for this.
You could be using the wrong settings.
The file could be corrupt (regardless of whether it plays OK or not)
Mpegstreamclip may not have the codecs at hand to decode the AVI.
AVI is a container not a compression type, it can contain any number of different video and audio compression types which may or may not be supported by mpegstreamclip. The problem primarily is that AVI is so old and outdated it should have been put out of its misery years ago. Indeed even M$ abandoned AVI over 10 years ago. In some cases AVI can contain compression types that can no longer be converted, although these are rare.
Use Quicktime to open the AVI files, use the quicktime inspector to see what compression is used and let us know.

  • Getting Around MPEG Streamclip "No Audio" Problem

    (Long post; apologies in advance.)
I needed to get around the MPEG Streamclip "no audio" problem that other people here have had. I just found a workaround that more-or-less works for my specific situation ... and it's free to boot.
Since other people are having this problem, I thought I'd let you know what happened to me, so you can decide if this is something you want to try. If you do, I suggest posting replies here so we all can learn (if that's okay with the board moderators here).
QTAmateur for MacOS X is available at http://www.mikeash.com/software/qtamateur/ . The developer has a somewhat full explanation of what it does at the site, so I won't repeat it here (and I don't get anything for talking about it here; I just want to share the good news).
Right now I'm field recording with a Flip Mino camera (non-HD), which saves video/audio to an AVI file (3ivx MPEG-4, 640x480) at 30 fps, with 44.1 kHz audio (Microsoft ADPCM). Funny thing is the files from my Flip actually imported into FCE without any conversion, but I had to render everything. And the video looked like crap. Hated the rendering and the look, so I searched for other solutions.
After paying for a couple of things that didn't work (lessons learned there), I finally found MPEG Streamclip. Since I'm using Snow Leopard, I sunk the additional $20 into the dang MPEG-2 playback component after my initial export try didn't produce any audio. After the component install, I still didn't have audio. Grrrrr.
So I Googled a bunch of keywords, and I somehow stumbled across this QTA package. Snow Leopard users should note a minor drawback here: QTA needs QuickTime 7, which gets blown away in a Snow Leopard upgrade and is not included in new Macs with Snow Leopard. Users can get off of their Install DVD, though, so it's not a huge deal.
When exporting from QTA, I matched its settings (audio and video) with the ones I found in this document: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12274888&#12274888 . QTA's export interface is actually QT7s, so at least that's familiar.
The only problem I'm having is that even though I set QTA to export at 29.97 fps, the exported files are still at 30 fps. A quick change in FCE upon import is the only thing I needed to use the file without rendering. I also had to change the fps setting on my LiveType files.
The only thing I need to figure out is to how to match up some studio-recorded audio with all of the above, so I don't have to render the studio audio and so it comes out at the equivalent of 30 fps. I think all I need to do is record at 44.1 KHz and I'm okay.
Of course, this is all my experience, and I realize others may not be able to work with this kind of setup. But I think this is an interesting workaround .. I wouldn't really call it a full solution, though, mainly because of the 29.97 fps versus 30 fps aspect.
One other quick thing: I'm not sure if this works without that $20 MPEG-2 playback component from Apple (thanks for that charge, Apple!), since I already had the component installed when I discovered QTA. Someone without the component, though, can download this and see if it works. If it does, then we all know that we don't need to spend the extra $20 for it to work.
If you decide to take the plunge, please let us know here. Thanks for reading.

    @Tom and @Meg:
Thanks so much for your replies (speedy, too!). I especially want to thank Meg, who took the time to replicate the problem (which confirms to myself that I'm not nuts ). At least I know I have an ultimate "savior" in QT7 Pro.
Before I spend that final $30, though, I want to see if Tom can help, based on what the QT Inspector says about my .avi files from the Flip. Here's what it says:
    VID00001.AVI
    Format: Generic MPEG-4, 640 x 480, Millions
    Microsoft ADPCM, Mono, 44.100 kHz
    FPS: 30
    Data Rate: 3408.53 kbits/s
    Normal Size: 640 x 480 pixels
    Current Size: 640 x 480 pixels (Actual)
(that's word for word, except for the source [file location]; wish I could figure out how to paste in the window from my Grab of it.)
I've already done the exports in the same way Meg indicated in her reply, trying all kinds of combinations. When exporting, though, I've always used DV/DVCPRO w/audio @ uncompressed 48k, and frame size @ 720x480 @ 29.97fps settings (saw those in another post here at the forum). I'm thinking those aren't contributing to my situation.
    Whaddya think, Tom?
BTW, the biggest reason why I want to have the audio is to easily sync the audio off the digital recorder (I hook myself up with a lav mic) to the audio coming off of the Flip. I do the ol' "triple clap" trick to sync audio, so that helps -- thank goodness for audio waveforms in FCE.
Once synced, I then delete the Flip audio and move the digital recorder audio up to A1/A2 (although I delete the A2 audio channel). Sounds 1000% better than the Flip audio, as I record outside and the Flip mic picks up wind big-time.
BTW, Tom: I bought your book earlier this week. It's really, really good. You could teach an entire college semester class off of this book, and do it well. I'm getting to more of the lessons this week.

  • Help! FCE won't accept anything I export from MPEG Streamclip 1.9

I've searched the forums, and I've done it before, and this should be the answer:
Exporting from MPEG Streamclip to QT using the DV/DVCPRO-NTSC codec should work to make a movie FCE will import in the DV-NTSC Easy Setup without the need to render!
It doesn't work anymore. I swear. I've tried every Easy Setup, tons of combinations of MPEG Streamclip exports (all QT) and Easy Setup for the past 2 hours. No matter what export I try, FCE won't accept it without the need to render.
What am I missing? This has always been so easy. Please please help. Thank you.

    case in point: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6244157
this is EXACTLY what i have always done and am now doing and it no longer works. is there anything anyone can think of?

  • MPEG streamclip export settings

I realize this is not an MPEG streamclip forum, but there is a FCE question embedded in my post somewhere. I'm converting M2T HDV files in MPEG Streamclip to edit in Final Cut Express. I've used several different export options in MPEG Streamclip, but all of them are requiring rendering in FCE. What is an export format in MPEG Streamclip that I can edit natively in FCE?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Katie

When I select export to Quicktime there isn't a 720x480 Anamorphic frame size. There's 854x480 in both the 16:9 and unscaled options, and there's a 720x480 DV-NTSC frame size, but there isn't one that says both. Also, the default compression is Apple Motion JPEG A: I don't see a DV-NTSC codec in the drop down menu for compression. Is there something I'm missing?
    Thanks for enduring!

  • MPEG Streamclip 1.8 is out...

A new version of MPEG Streamclip is out...MPEG Streamclip 1.8
    As of 12/30/06
    http://www.squared5.com/
    added compatibility with DivX 6.5-6.6
improved AVI and DivX playback, encoding and editing
    added an internal AVI importer
    improved iPod compatibility
added the Open URL command with the Download button
    added an internal audio resampler
added support for MPEG-1 in VOBs and transport streams
the Fix Timecode Breaks command has been improved
added 90 and 180 degree rotation
    many bugs have been fixed

    - MPEG Streamclip can now open and download FLV files.
    - MicroMV and HDV camera owners please use Apple's DVHSCap to transfer movies into your Mac; then use MPEG Streamclip to convert them.
    - DreamBox and Topfield users can open, download and upload movies with MPEG Streamclip, using the Enigma and Altair menus.
    NEW IN VERSION 1.8
The Open URL command of the File menu, can now open and also download (or batch download) streams over the Internet, and it often recognizes and opens movies embedded in web pages. More details later in this guide.
MPEG Streamclip is now compatible with DivX 6. A special codec adapter has been added so now the DivX codec can be selected in the AVI and MOV exporter windows. If DivX 6.5 or later is installed, you can select MPEG Layer 3 audio in the exporter window as well.
The "Save As" command for AVI files has been significantly improved: it is faster, and can now handle B-frames properly. Better B-frame support has also been added in the AVI exporter, when the XviD codec is selected and B-frames are enabled in XviD options. Other improvements in the AVI exporter include proper encoding of AVI files with BMP and JPEG video, "lower" dominance for DivX, and a special frame size called "720x576 DivX PAL" that appear in place of "720x576 DV-PAL", when a DivX compatible codec is used.
An internal AVI importer has been added; it is a component that puts the AVI file in the player when it is opened in MPEG Streamclip. It was necessary because none of the three external AVI importers currently available (QuickTime, DivX, Perian-FFusion) seem to work properly.
Two internal AC3 and MP2 decoder components have been added: now it is possible to play QuickTime and AVI files with MPEG Layer 2 and AC3 sound without having to install any external codec.
An internal high-quality audio resampler (aka sample rate converter) has been added. This was necessary to replace the QuickTime audio resampler, used in previous versions of MPEG Streamclip, which worked well on PowerPC Macs but appeared to have random bugs on Intel Macs that affected the quality of sound and caused many out-of-sync problems.
Fixed many bugs; some of them were there since version 1.5, including: a bug in which the last few seconds of the audio track were not exported; a bug in which the video compressor used was sometimes different from the video compressor chosen; a bug in which the picture became darker/brighter when exporting with the same compressor; a bug in which the frame rate was not detected properly.
For FLV files, the Video PID menu lets you select the video aspect ratio (4:3/16:9).
Added support for MPEG-1 video in transport streams and in VOB files.
Added a quality slider for JPEG frame export.

mmm...why can't you set key frames in Streamclip?
"The keyframe interval for export has been increased from 1 second to 5 seconds (as recommended by Apple)." -- from the New in Beta Version 1.8b1 Help file.
Qt does 4 or 5 passes you just don't see it happening...Compressor does 4 or 5 passes...
Had wondered in the past but you are the first person to confirm this.
I've seen it when a h.264 is set to multi-passes and the video doesn't has much going on in it...then there is fast encoding...
Always happens in H.264 and is specifically mentioned in the Help file. Would prefer, however, that instead of simply saying "Passing movie at ..." the progress window would say something like "Pass #1: movie at ..." and increment the pass number on each pass so I will know when to expect the last pass. Got into the habit of always monitoring the last pass to scan the video output and keep an eye on the combined average data rate. However, must admit this may no longer be necessary as the data rate appears more stable (i.e., not as "loose" as v1.7) and output is actually iPod compatible.
I've seen it when a h.264 is set to multi-passes and the video doesn't has much going on in it...then there is fast encoding...
Am trying to consolidate workflow to fewer applications rather than expand them. Was forced to use MPEG Streamclip to create consistently cropped/scaled video frames for media sourced from old TV footage. Was totally dissatisfied with ffmpegX in this department and fell back on the old MPEG Streamclip to new QT workflow as the best temporary alternative. And, since there is little visual difference between the single-pass and multi-pass modes, the new Streamclip also provide a much faster workfolw for material that is basically dated and of a somewhat lesser quality to begin with.
Or to take a 10-bit uncompress and make it either smaller x to y or change the frame rate...Or take a 10-bit from FCP flatten the transitions and then bring that back into FCp...
Have to confess that my efforts are only directed exclussively towards personal archiving and easy access of so-called "oldies but goodies" and not "production level" edits.
Do you think Streamclip does a good job on h.264? Compared to Qt...
If pressed, would have to admit that I probably like the "tweeking" done by Apple for quality. MPEG Streamclip, at least using my combination of workflow, filters and settings, produces a somewhat "softer" rendering than I prefer. This is likely due to my using the "wider 2D-FIR" scaler and undoubted contributes to increased processing times since I crop/scale in both horizontal and vertical dimensions. Would, however, readily change my workflow if Apple were to add the ability to control alternate audio tracks to both the iTunes application and iPod firmware, as well as, provide AC3 support for QT-to-Optical line output. (This is rapidly becoming a personal "pet peeve" as we approach release of the "iTV" device in Q1 of next year.)

  • No Audio in Mpeg Streamclip

I'm trying to convert files from a dvd recorder in mpeg streamclip to edit in Final Cut Express. It has been working fine until a few weeks ago when the audio from the DVD files are not there. I can play the files in VLC and audio is there but not in MPEG Streamclip. Obviously something has changed on my computer but I don't know what. here is what MPEG streamclip shows under stram info
    Stream: VTS011.VOB
    Path: /Volumes/DVD Video Recording/VIDEOTS/VTS_011.VOB
    Type: VOB program stream
    Duration: 0:16:54
    Data Size: 572.48 MB
    Bit Rate: 4.73 Mbps
    Video Tracks:
    224 MPEG-2, 720 × 480, 4:3, 29.97 fps, 6.12 Mbps, upper field first
    Audio Tracks:
    128 AC3 2/0, 48 kHz, 256 kbps
    Stream Files:
    VTS011.VOB (572.48 MB)
    Thanks

    Hi(Bonjour)!
You have to select a quicktime format supported natively by FCE to export. In this case DVCPRO 25 or 50 for video, AIFF 16 bit 48 kHz for audio.

  • Forgot to deinterlace video in MPEG Streamclip -- do I have to start over?

I realize this is the FCE forum and I used iMovie, but I thought maybe some of you more advanced users could help me.
I have a Panasonic SDR-H18 which records in MPEG-2 format. During my first foray into using iMovie and MPEG Streamclip, I made a rather long movie but didn't realize I had to check the "Deinterlace video" option in Streamclip.
As a result, I now have a finished iMovie movie which I really like, but the results of failing to deinterlace are horribly noticeable when the DVD is played on a TV.
I'm just wondering, short of starting from scratch -- converting all the virgin clips and deinterlacing this time -- and doing it all over again, do I have another solution? Is anyone aware of a way I could somehow run my finished movie through Streamclip and deinterlace it, so I wouldn't have to start over?

I'm not sure what specifications you mean -- I just left the settings the way they were in the convert to DV menu.
That said -- the fact is, the interlacing lines are there, and I'm wondering if there's a way to get rid of them on a project I've already finished. I already know how to prevent them in the future.

  • Converting to MP4 using MPEG Streamclip

    Hi,
I did post this in another topic, then realised I probaby should start a new one.
I am new so please be nice - and I'm not superwhiz with these things...
I am in the process of using the recommended MPEG Streamclip 1.2 (for Windows) to convert my .VOB file to MP4 so that I can play it on my ipod. The file is approx 500MB, and I think I may have selected wrong options as it has taken over 12 hours to convert 65% of the file... and it's still going (obviously :-))
I can't do a screen print of the settings I've used because it's still going... but the link should show you them basically, the differences are as follows:
    Button says iTunes not iPod
    Limit Data Rate 1.5 mbps
    Framesize Other 640 * 480
    Interlaced Scaling not checked
    http://forum.videohelp.com/topic320388.html
    So my questions are:
    1. Is it normal for conversion to take this long?
    2. Are the settings I chose correct?
    Thanks in advance!
*Please note I asked here not on the MPEG Streamclip forums just because you guys recommended it so you obviously have some experience using it.*

There are presets for the iPod and Apple TV-they are located under file->export to mpeg-4. Once the window pops up hit the iTunes button. You get a popup window with a long list of options.
The quickest setting would be 3gp-172 by something(the very last one).
It is designed to stream to the iPhone over the 3g network.
    PS.
You can lower the bitrate to speed things up slightly, but using a p4 like yours will take for ever.

  • Best export for a .VOB from MPEG Streamclip to iMovie?

    Hi,
My source is a DVD and I want to make sure that the two minutes I end up with in iMovie is of the best quality.
I own the Quicktime MPEG-2 thing and, becase of timecode errors, I have opened the .VOB in MPEG Streamclip and I am asking myself, "Which Export, Convert, Demux do I use?"
In the discussions I have seen a lot of recommendations for Exporting to a DV Stream.
If this is the best quality, which compression? DV25, DV25PRO or DV50PRO? Additionally, aside from checking "Split DV Stream...", what other options (Frame blending, deinterlace, better downscaling) should I check?
What about simply Demuxing the VOB and placing the mpeg2/aiff into iMovie -> contents-> media? Can iMovie handle a mpeg2 and, if so, wouldn't that allow the greatest amount of flexibility?
BTW - I don't know what the end product is going to be, which is why I want to have the flexibilty and highest quality.
    Thanks!

Video-DVDs (VOBs inside the VIDEO_TS folders) use 48 kHz audio so you don't need to touch the resample button in MPEG Streamclip.
I don't want to lose information if I don't have to.
Yes... You are already dealing with a VOB -> DV conversion which degrades quality... If possible, I'd get the original source and digitize that to DV, so there wouln't be any quality degradation from the detour to DVD.
Or, if that fails, edit the VOBs with apps like MPEG Streamclip -- that won't degrade DVD quality level either. But then you'd have to forget the iLife apps because they don't support this kinb of workflow.

  • Import .m2t into FCP directly? Without MPEG Streamclip?

So right now FCP will not import .m2t clips directly?
Could Apple consider putting this on their "to-do" list? Because we had the option of switching from PC (Vegas) to Mac (FCP) about 1 year ago, I looked at the MPEG Streamclip solution, and I pegged it as too much of a hassle.
We have about 2 TB of video data stored on portable NTSC drives, and we'll like to access any of it in future FCP projects. Conversion (even if its lossless) is a big issue.
Are there any plug-ins which would allow FCP to recognize this format, so we don't have to convert everything? Everything else (read-only NTSC support), sharing video across high-speed networks and buying Mac hardware is not a problem.
Apple! We would have switched a year ago if not for this! Am I missing an obvious solution?
    Thank you,
    -Gord

I was extremely happy to find it, and we were able then to try using FCE on some footage. I'm not dissing MPEG Streamclip. But this is something I expect would be a lot of value to people working in mixed environments.
Its not just our backlog of media, and our current projects expecting .m2t source files. It looks like we'd have to halt all capturing on PCs because their software captures to .m2t files. Instead of a smooth migration with new projects we'd have to spend a fortune on Macs, instead of growing our way into FCP.
Is it possible to capture HDV to QuickTime on a PC? Thanks for your comment.

  • MPEG1-DV conversion using MPEG Streamclip. Help!

I am having problems converting an mpeg1 movie clip for editing in iMovie.
I recently recorded a concert on my Sony DCR-HC40 camcorder. The majority of the concert was captured to cassette in DV-PAL format (720 x 576, stereo, 48 kHz at 25 FPS).
However, the final third of the concert was captured on the camera's MemoryStick Duo in MPEG1 muxed format (320 x 320 at 25 FPS). The clip is 84 Mb in size.
I want to convert the mpeg clip into the same format at the cassette footage so that I can seamlessly splice the two sets of footage in iMovieHD with as little depreciation in quality of image and sound as possible.
So far I have simply used the 'export to DV' command from the File menu in MPEG Streamclip. But this produces a noticeably crackly-sounding depreciation in sound quality and no improvement in image quality - rather the reverse infact, since when viewed in the larger Quicktime window, the clip shows up the poorer resolution of the original clip.
What do I need to do to get the original mpeg clip to as near a quality as the cassette footage, for editing and burning onto DVD for display on a TV?
Any guidance would be much appreciated.
    BTW, I am running Tiger 10.4.3 on a Pb G4 (QuickTime 7.0.3/iMovie 5.0.2)
    PowerBook G4 17 1.5 ghz 512 MB Ram   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

mpeg1 footage is only fit for showing on screens no larger than an iPod photo or mobile device?
MPEG1 is usually encoded with low resolution and rather low bitrates so the quality is often rather poor.
However, MPEG1 CAN be encoded with DVD-like resolutions and bitrates so the quality CAN be quite good (MPEG1 doesn't support interlacing like MPEG2, though).
It would be a shame to lose the footage as it was part of a concert of Handel's Messiah.
One option could be to do minimal edits to the MPEG1 with MPEG editors like MPEG Streamclip and burn it as a VCD or DVD (they both CAN have the same video although DVDs rarely use it). Then you'd preserve ALL video quality there is.
...but this won't work with your 320x240 video because the VCD/DVD compatible resolution is PAL 352x288 or NTSC 352x240. So you'd need to re-compress even your 320x240 MPEG which degrades quality.
So your best quality option is to watch the MPEG1 on a computer monitor via MPEG Streamclip, QT Player or some other viewer.
Or, you can convert to DV and blend it with the high quality DV tape material. Converting MPEG to DV should not much or at all degrade quality because DV is a much higher quality codec than your MPEG1 source.
    Bit Rate: 0.73 Mbps
    Duration: 0:16:16
    Data Size: 84.79 MB
That's quite low. A DVD uses about 4-6-8 Mb/s and a low quality low res VCD uses 1.1 Mb/s. So your MPEG1 quality can't be very good to begin with.
    Audio Tracks:
    192 MP2 mono, 32 kHz, 32 kbps
That's very low, too. Even a low quality MP2 often uses 192 kb/s. And the 32 kHz must be resampled to 48 kHz for DV or DVD use.
when played, either via streamclip before conversion, or in QT (I don't have QTPro) after conversion to DV, distorts at quite low levels in a way that a QT movie from cassette does not.
I'm afraid that there is not much you can do if you hear the distortion even BEFORE any conversions. Some dedicated audio processing app might soften the distortion but I wouldn't count on that.
FWIW, you might try to convert using the "Low Level" audio. From the MPEG Streamclip guide:
"For MPEG audio tracks (MP1, MP2) two different audio levels are available for playback and conversion to MOV, DV, AVI, MP4 and AIFF: "High Level" and "Low Level". You can choose one of these two levels using the "Audio Mode" pop-up menu. The default level is "High Level". Use "Low Level" if, and only if, the converted movie or AIFF file shows an excess of volume."
you also mention that re-compressing with iDVD will further degrade quality. Is this true of both types of footage (mpeg->DV & DV cassette)?
MPEG2 compression used in video-DVDs will ALWAYS degrade quality. High quality material (such as DV) tolerates this better so you might not even notice it. So you should use high bitrates if you want to convert and burn the low quality MPEG1-converted-to-DV material as a DVD (with iDVD use Best Performance or don't exceed ~70 minutes with Best Quality).
would I need to get Roxio Toast? What is the difference between this and IDVD?
Toast 7 can be forced to burn non-valid DVD resolutions as a video-DVD (MPEG Streamclip can be used to prepare the MPEGs) with no re-converting or quality loss but those DVDs are not guaranteed to work on standalone DVD players so I'd not use that route.
Basically, what I'd like to acheive is a nicely-edited home movie with titles etc, to put onto DVD & VHS, of a 2.5 hour classical concert, in as good a quality, audio/visually as I can, from the two types of footage, spliced as cleanly as possible. The footage is continuous, but the media changes from cassette to mpeg at a certain point.
Don't exceed ~70-75 minutes with iDVD because after this the quality starts to drop. Toast 7 can burn somewhat longer high quality DVDs than iDVD because it uses compressed AC3 audio so it doesn't "steal" bandwidth from video as iDVD does with its uncompressed PCM audio. But compressing that low quality audio might not be a good idea either!
