Disk verification stopped by user

My aunt has a G5 iMac with OS 10.4.11. A year ago, her password mysteriously changed, and when she tried to verify the disk using DU, before the verification finished it would say "stopped by user."
We reset the password with Single User Mode, and she could again verify her disk.
Now, suddenly she can't connect with the internet. Her DSL modem says it has sync and has Ethernet communication with the computer, but if she clicks Network in Profiler, it doesn't list Ethernet or Firewire or anything else.
If the modem says it has Ethernet communication, I suppose the iMac's Ethernet hardware works. What problem could interrupt disk verification and make the OS unaware of Ethernet and Firewire?

Two thing to try:PRAM reset and an SMU reset.
Also, using Disk Utility to check the disk:
1. Start from your Mac OS X Install disc: Insert the installation disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.

    You are accidentally clicking the button (e.g. Verify Disk Permissions) twice. Maybe something is wrong with your mouse or your trackpad button or whatever you are using.

    This morning, without making any hardware or software changes, I found my internet access to be intermitent and slow across all browsers. I have attempted using wifi and ethernet, uninstalling browsers and re-installing, changing IP config, disabling firewall. Other devices on our network are operating normally but mine has been sluggish.
    I then noticed that anytime one browser hung up, I could open a new one and the hung one would then start loading again. I could switch between browsers - as one hung up, I could load a new page in another and the hung one would begin working again.
    One suggestion I found online was to repair the disk so I finally began with a permission verification. The first entry was as above:

    I had issues about a month ago and fully repaired the hard drive at that time. I mostly use an ipad during the day, rarely on my macbook any more.
    What is ACL?
    I have remote management disabled in System Preferences > Sharing. So what is with the ARDAgent file mod and the non-repair?
    Finally, what is the stopped by user message? I did nothing to interrupt permission verification - DiskUtility proceeded from there normally?
    Could any of these have something to do with my odd browser behavior?

    You can ignore the parts about ARDAgent, it's normal behavior so you don't need to worry about it.
    ACL is Access Control Lists; they're like advanced permissions for when standard (POSIX) permissions aren't enough for a server. However, you've mentioned that only your device is having issues on the network; I would try a clean install of OSX provided all of your info is backed up.

  • Disk sharing and multiple users...

    Hi,
    I've my hard-drive connected to my Airport Extreme base station, to which I access from a Snow Leopard. The connection works properly and I can access the disk. Happily.
    I have two users (let's say "toto" and "tata") on my Snow Leopard who I want to have full access to the drive. It is possible, but I have to mount the disk twice (once per users). The mounting points are created in this order:
    - /Volume/Disk
    - /Volume/Disk-1
    The access rights for both are 700 which means that one user can not access to the mounted point of the other. Furthermore, the mounted points are decided in the order the disk are mounted, which means we never know whose are "Disk" or "Disk-1".
    This situation is very problematic with software like iTunes, which can not find its files if the mount point is not the expected one.
    The workaround I have found is to allow full access (777) to guest users on my disk (and filter MAC addresses on the station), but this only allows "tata" to access to the mounting point of "toto" ("tata" would mount the Drive at "/Volumes/Disk-1" anyway).
    Regarding this issue, I have two questions:
    - is it possible to make MacOSX mount the disk with 770 permissions ?
    - is it possible to force both accounts to use the same mount point "/Volume/Disk" ?

    Correct you are. Thats the character of disk images. They are one "document" that contains many items. TimeMachine does not see inside the image so it has to backup the entire file.
    So does anyone have a good idea for a solution?
    Stop using the sparseimage.
    Put your iTunes library and iPhoto library an external drive as that sharing article suggests (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1198). Then use a second hard drive to backup both your computer and your 1st hard drive. Not only will you be able to access this iTunes library and iPhoto library from other user accounts but you can free up hard drive space on your system. Downside is you must have the 1st hard drive plugged into your system to access iTunes / iPhoto.

  • DISK UTILITY STOPPED REPAIRING MACINTOSH HD!

    So initially, my mac just was stuck on the white screen with grey apple logo and the spinning wheel. It wouldn't move! So I held down the power button and turned it off, let it rest for good 8 hours, turned it back on and it was still the same! With the help of some online postings: command + control + p + r, I got to the Disk Utility page and I tried checking for any damage. For most part everything was"ok" or "clear"! Then I ran 'VERIFY DISK' for MACINTOSH HD and some problems occurred. I clicked on 'REPAIR DISK' as promted. It said "DISK UTILITY STOPPED REPAIRING MACINTOSH HD: Disk Utitlity can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files.
    I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA HOW TO DO THAT ! I have not backed up a single thing on my mac!

    If you want to preserve the data on the boot drive, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data, you can skip this step.
    There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to fully boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot from the Recovery partition or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

    I verify my disk and disk permissions every month or so, when I tried to verify the disk today I received the following message -
    "Disk Utility stopped verifying "Macintosh HD"
    The alert goes on to recommend I restart using my installion disk - since I'm running Lion - I don't have an installation disk.
    Details -
    MacBook Pro Mid 2010
    Shipped with Snow Leopard, upgraded to Lion - now running 10.7.2
    I am backed up with Time Machine right up until today.
    Details from Disk Utility

    Checking catalog file.
    Checking multi-linked files.
    Checking catalog hierarchy.

    Firstly, you should never bother with Verifying the drive. If you're going to do anything then repair it:
    Repair the Hard Drive - Lion
    Boot from your Lion Recovery HD. When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Upon completion select Restart from the Apple menu.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
    Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

    What you reported from Disk Utility is from repairing permissions, not verifying the hard drive. Nevertheless, those messages are innocuous, will be repeated whenever you repair permissions, and are unrelated to your problem.
    The initial startup after updating will be slow. However, thereafter they should return to normal unless you have issues in your system installation such as not repairing the drive and or permissions before you updated.
    So, do this now:
    Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger, Leopard or Snow Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    Then download AppleJack - CNet Downloads or MacUpdate - and read the documentation carefully. Install the software and follow the instructions on how to use it.

  • Disk Verification Problem...?

    I'm hoping this is the correct section to post this......
    I've been posting over on the iDVD section of this site where 'Glo H' was trying to help me solve a problem I'm having. We seem to have run our course there and he suggested I post here as we've moved out of his sphere of expertise.
    Just some background to the problem:
    Up until a couple of weeks ago I was happily burning .avi movie files to DVD using iDVD.
    One day the audio on a resulting DVD lost the audio at around eight minutes into the movie. I checked the original .avi - it was fine. I tried burning other .avi files which I'm made DVDs from previously ( and they worked fine ) and also tried changing the brand of disk several times, playing them on different computers, DVD players etc. The audio stopped working on all of them at around 8 to 10 minutes into the movie.
    I was advised by 'Glo H' to make a disk image of an .avi and check this. I did so and the audio cuts out at the same point. He then suggested I erase my iDVD preference file, then re-open iDVD to create a new one. This I did.
    The next suggestion was to open disk utility and run 'Verify Disk Permissions'. When I did so I got this message after a short time:
    "First Aid Failed. Disk Utility stopped Verfying Macintosh HD - following error encountered - Filesystem repair or verify failed".
    I went ahead and ran the 'Repair Disk Transmissions' and got a 'Permissions Repair Complete' message back.
    I'm just unsure of where this leaves me with my hard disk and the problem with which running 'Verify' seems to be showing.
    I haven't tried burning a DVD with iDVD yet and will wait until the above problem is ( hopefully) solved..
    Any help will be most gratefully received.

    Unfortunately, you have had a disk error. You should first attempt to repair your file system:
    1) Boot to your Leopard install disk (or the "Software Restore" disk #1 that came with your Macbook). Insert the disk, then start or restart and hold the "C" key. When the installer loads, select a language, then open Disk Utility from the "Utilities" menu.
    2) Select your internal drive in the list at the left side of the Disk Utility window. In the "First Aid" pane, click the "Repair Disk" button (not the "Repair Disk Permissions" button). Let us know what errors are reported and/or what repairs are made.
    3) Quit Disk Utility to return to the installer, and quit the installer to restart normally.
    Disk Utility may or may not be able to effectively repair your disk directory. Even if repairs are made successfully, this will fix your file system but it will not repair files that may have been damaged by the disk error. In the end, you'll need to backup all of your data, then format (erase) your internal drive and reinstall OS X.
    If you have a Time Machine backup, you can restore your entire installation of OS X, but you must use a backup that was made prior to the occurrence of the disk error (prior to the start of your current problems). A better solution might be to reinstall OS X normally, from the DVD, then restore just your user data from the backup. If you do this, the easiest option would probably be to use the Migration Assistant to restore your user data from the Time Machine backup.

    Which keyboard layout you were using? German, French ... I suppose your layout is reset to the default: US and you are unable to find the "?" or "/" ...
    Please have a look into the keyboard viewer, to see how the layout of your keyboard is actually.

  • Disk Utility stopped repairing Mac HD - Now what?

    My computer has been running slow so I cleaned up my desktop, trashed a bunch of old files and went to verify permissions. I was then told to use disk repair.
    In the middle of doing so I got this message - "Disk Utility stopped repairing 'Macintosh HD'. Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed-up files."
    Besides occasional slowness, my computer is working fine and I was able to get back to my desktop. Is this slow down issue going to get progressively worse if I don't reformat the disk? Should I do what the message says? If so, how? I've never reformatted before...it sounds a little scary.
    I back up about once a week (just did so this morning) so I should be good to go there. I have AppleCare. Is this something I should bring the computer in for or can I fix this issue on my own?

    Do as instructed. Get your self a backup drive if you don't have one. Backup your files. Then erase your OS X volume and reinstall Mountain Lion.
    Install or Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
    Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
    Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
          left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
            the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
          the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Install button.
    Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
                because it is three times faster than wireless.

    It is not possible to restrict SU3 to display, because it has only S_TCODE has the authorization object.
    If you really want to restrict users from changing their profile you have to remove the SU3 access and give SU1 or SU2 which gives access only to Personnel details and Parameters.

    I don't know of any way to do that by user.
    I used to partition my HD and that sets a hard limit by partition, but by user? I don't think it can be done.

    Thanks for your reply.  I don't use itunes so that couldn't be it.  Reading about Little Snitch and Hands Off, however,  educated me about the data harvesting in many apps and that when buying from the AppStore one will more likely get Apps with benign data harvesting.
