Disntinguish between functional area and cost center

Hello,
     what's the real pupose of defining func. areas and assigning to cost centers.
ok, we can capture all the costs of all cost centers , fine, but even the cost center will do that and we can report at cost center grp level or at any grp level, but still not clear abt the true significance of it as compared to cost cneter which does the same. Also how should we go about defining functioanl areas
please advice.

    A change of the functional area can lead to inconsistencies when reversing documents.
    If documents are reversed after the functional area has been changed, in some cases,
    the reversal document may be posted with the new functional area.
    My question is how to change the new functional area to the old one after reversing documents.
    We aren't using Special Purpose Ledger . Please Help me, thanks.

    For the transactions already posted you will not be able to change the Functional Area. Also if those documents are getting reversed now after the change, the reversal document will get posted to the new Functional Area only.
    For all those documents which gets reversed after the change, you need to pass FI journal entry by changing the Functional area in the journal entry and not in the Cost Center Master

    In our sandbox system, whenever I try to convert a Purchase requistion into a Purchase Order I get the following error message : "Functional area and cost of sales accounting (company code 2000) active".
    Anyone know how I can resolve this issue?

    Can any body explain about difference between business area and profit center accounting .

    Hi
    Business area will have many profit centers. For example Vehicle is a business area in a company. Vehicle can be cars and Bikes etc. Here Vehicle is business area and Cars and Bike are profit centers. In broad Vehicle is a profit center. But as it has sub areas those are profit centers. So profit centers cannot be replaced with business area and vice versa. We can replace business area by Profit centre, only condition is that it should be in same controlling area. The business area is more like a business unit of a company. You can have multiple profit centers within a business area.
    Main distinguish factor is that distribution and assessment in possible in profit center but not in business area.
    One more distinction is that Business area need not be attached to any organisation structure. But profit centres can be created only under the controlling area. Business area can be across controlling area.
    Business area concept is used for making stragic decisions by the management whereas the primary purpose of profit centre accounting is responsibility accounting.

    What are the benefits of using functional areas over cost center groups when building your p&l for cost absorbtion or visa versa?  Which of the two is recommended?

    1: a P&L statement does not only contain cost-center related postings, you can have different CO-objects (Internal order, WBS-Element,...)but all of them contain the functional area in its master record.
    The P&L reporting structure (created via report painter) can use account groups but restricted to one functional area for porper P&L structure creation.

    Business Area determines where the revenue should be allocated when you sell a material or a service.
    For eg: If your customer is in say Mumbai and he is ordering for a service in Delhi (say DIAL - Delhi International Airport Limited) then based on the terminology.
    Your customer would belong to B Basis Business Area - WHERE THE REVENUE IS COMING FROM or WHERE YOUR CUSTOMER BELONGS TO (SALES OFFICE).
    Whereas your DIAL sales will belong to A Basis Business Area - WHERE THE REVENUE IS GOING TO.
    Cost Center would determine where your allocate your cost to.
    Say Rounding Off can be used as a cost element, because some sort of revenue is lost when figures are roudned off..

    Profit Center - The profit center view shows the various
    internal areas of responsibilities. Objects such as cost
    centers, materials, etc can be used for profit center
    analysis. Profit center can be used to determine the
    revenues, costs, and profitability for specfic areas of
    responsibility.
    Business Area - Business area forms an important part of
    external reporting. Analysis of various segments, product
    divisions, regions etc is possible using business areas.
    Business Area: This is optional
    This can be used cross compane codes
    This is for Internal Purpose
    It is not Legal Entity like Co Code
    The transation entered in Business are, Debit total will
    not tally with credit total
    Since it is used for segment wise or area wise or line wise
    this is used for internal report purpose only .
    Balance Shhet and P & L stataments can be drawn on segment
    wise
    Profit Centre: Generally in terms of SAP or Finance the
    meaning of Profit centre is to know the profitabilty.
    In same manner , The managers  wants to know the ROI from
    their investments, obviously we nned to use the tool.
    This ROI may be geographically or area wise or division
    wise. P.C provided us profitablity of the particular area
    for internal purpose ( Only for Internal )
    Business Area is an optional entry.Whenever company wants
    financial statements businessarea wise we can maintain
    BAs.And also we can maintain BA as Segment Wise,Product
    Wise,Geographical Location wise.
    Profit center is used to know the profits of companies.PC
    is also used for to know the profits as aProduct
    wise,Segment wise,geographical location wise.If anything

    we have a requirement to create the Report painter report where in the Revenue will be By business area and cost of the particular cost center by Cost element.
    i.e revenue by Business area against cost by department.
    It it possible to use report painter to create such report?. when i was going through the report painter it does not allow me to pull the cost  by department .

    Hi,
    Business consolidation is for more of consolidation purpose and cost center grouping is more for management reporting purpose for cost control purposes.
    Both the organizational units serve for different purposes. Consolidatied business will not have much meaning unless you go with EC-CS.
    Cost Center Groups are much for control purpose and help in managerial reporting.
    Business Units are part of FI Organizational Structure and Cost Centers are part of CO organizational structures.

    Dear experts,
    I am new to FICO and here is one question need your help:
    Now I have table COSP, can anybody let me know how can I get Function Area through joining some other table?
    Or how to get the cost center from COSP, since I know then I can go to CSKS to find the function area.
    Any post would be appreciated and thank you all in advance!

    Thanks for your reply.
    Actually this is a requirement for our BW system. I checked all the records to find their OBJNR start with "OR", but we need to get the function area information. Do you know how can I get that?
    The link below listed all the fields we have on BW side, actually it has function area, but it returns blank, we tried to apply one OSS note in the source ECC system, but still no value returned for this field. So we have to find another way to get the function area.

    Hi All,
    I need to know the table that contains the details of functional location and the cost center mapped to that.
    I know a table IFLOT which gives details of the functional location, however i do not see field for cost center in that.
    Let me know if there is any other table which gives this data.

    i am giving a realtime information on business areas and cost centers.
    For our company we have 25 branches. in sap we treat all of our branches as a seperate business area. the reason why we maintain business area. at the month end or year end financial statemensts are generated on company code basis and business area base. so we consider branches as a business area.
    Cost center is like a cost object.
