Display issue on brand new 2014 X1 Carbon Touch

So I was about to start raving about my X1C that I just received. Loving the display, the keyboard, build quality, etc. I had no gripes and was just browsing away when suddenly the screen did the full glitch. I recognize this as what happens when something's messed with the motherboard/display adapter. So I gave it a reset. All was normal and then it happened again. I was able to replicate it 3-4 times and it keeps happening. I never dropped it or anything. It was always just stationary.
I can't believe this. I had problems with the first gen non-touch and touch. I was hoping by now they have improved.

I’m sorry to hear that you have display issues in your brand new Lenovo X1 carbon.
From the snapshots, it seems like a cable/LCD issue. Is the display working fine when you connect it to an external monitor?

  • New 2014 X1 Carbon Touch - 1 Week Review

I've had the New 2014 Carbon X1 for about a week now, so I thought I'd post a review about my experiences thus far.
The version I received was the high end model, i7 4th gen, 8gb ram, IPS 2560x1440 touch display. This is the first Lenovo device I have purchased, and I did so at the recommendation of my brother who has owned a T series for the last 3 years. I am a film student, so my intention is to do some light video editing (not rendering) and lightroom/ photoshop work on this device (in addition to daily use of OneNote). I was looking for a powerful ultrabook with good build quality, battery life, and cooling when I purchased this laptop.
    Hardware:
The hardware on this device has highly conservative look, which I appreciate. The laptop doesn't draw attention, but is pleasing to the eye when viewed up close. I like the fact that there are not as many creases or lines that run through the body of the device (when compared to other devices), which results in a more free flowing but unified appearance.
The matte plastic on the top of the lid has a slightly rubberized texture, making the device easy to grip. My hands get hot and moist consistently, so the lid does occasionally pick up some faint moisture streaks if I carry it without a case. The slightly rubberized texture is pleasant to the touch and is easy to wipe down with a damp cloth. The inside of the device has a similar plastic around the keys and palm rests, but does not attain as much of a rubber (soft) feel as the lid. The texture on the palm rests is good, and stays cool under extended typing conditions.
At first I was having issues with the keyboard whereby I would press the spacebar too early in a word. This is due to not pressing the letter keys down firmly enough. After adjusting my finger pressure while typing, I have been able to avoid this problem for the most part. The pressure I am applying to the keys is just a hair more than I am used to, but it is something that doesn't cause a major inconvenience. The backlight on the keyboard is excellent, not too bright or too dim at any one moment.
The fingerprint reader took several tries to set up, mostly because there is a discrepancy between the lenovo fingerprint software and the integrated Windows 8 security fingerprint setting. By installing my index finger for login on both programs, I was able to successfully unlock the computer from sleep with a swipe of my finger. I am really impressed by the integration of a light on the sensor. When my print isn't accepted the first time, an amber color light flashes on site. Its easier to just look at the light than have to switch my glance back to the monitor after every swipe (like my previous HP laptop). Upon a successful swipe, a lime color light flashes on the reader.
The screen on the device meets my expectations in every way. The display is IPS which is required for accurate photo editing, and it is LED which makes it very power efficient. Viewing angles are fine, but they could be a little better. Brightness is excellent, but the initial settings have Auto Brightness enabled. On this setting, pumping the brightness up to "100%" really means 100% of what the Auto Brightness function deems appropriate for the current ambient light. To have full manual control, Auto Brightness must be disabled. This results in a much brighter screen with beautiful whites, deep blacks, etc. This is a 300nit display so brightness is very well addressed. As a side note, the laptop was shipped with what appears to be an installed screen protector. There are several holes around the microphones and camera, and a tiny seam along the edge of the screen. The protector is virtually unnoticeable, so I'm leaving it on for the time being. It is much cleaner than any other factory installed laptop screen protector (or film) than I've ever seen (no bubbles, peel-off tabs, or misalignment).
Cooling on the device is good, but it did not exceed my expectations. On power saver mode, the bottom of the laptop is cool to the touch except the back right corner. To the touch the corner feels as warm as something that's been in the sun for 5 minutes or so which is excellent. I have a temp gun so I'll have to check specifics later. On high performance mode, heat significantly increases. Most of the bottom of the laptop heats up even if no intensive tasks are being run. If the laptop is on my lap, I prefer it to be in power saver mode for this reason.
Battery life is good for such a small laptop. I have 8 hours of back to back classes and I type notes basically the whole time. With this laptop, it is entirely possible to go that full period without a charger. So far I have done this twice. The settings I use are Wifi off, low brightness, and I enable high contrast mode in accessibility center so the glaring white of OneNote doesn't blind me during the film screenings.
Webcam looks great for google hangouts, and the microphones are the most sensitive I've ever used. They can pick up the voice of someone to the side and across the room with great clarity.
Overall the weight and feel of the laptop is very pleasing. Such a light weight for its size, and it feels solid to the touch and doesn't flex the slightest when handled different ways (carbon fiber ++). When compared to a macbook air, it is nearly identical in size and weight. However, I find typing on the lenovo is much more pleasant because the front edge of the palm rest isn't sharp enough to dig into my hands.
    Software
The Lenovo Solution software (pinned to taskbar upon installation) is easy to use and responsive (unlike similar HP suites). I am actually going to rely on this software for updates instead of disabling it.
For the first few days of use, there was a touch keyboard toolbar button pinned to my start bar that would appear again even after disabling it. I researched the problem and it was permanently removed from the taskbar by uninstalling the touchpad driver and reinstalling it. Odd.
The adaptive row of keys is a good idea, but it is not as responsive as I'd like. When using the visual gestures or dragon voice control, there is significant lag between pressing the adaptive key and the program actually running. Each time, a lenovo window appears and it takes several mouse clicks to get to a functioning state for each button. One thing I am VERY disappointed about is the lack of any play/pause/stop/next/previous buttons for the adaptive row to use with a media player. These buttons are necessary, and not having them is unacceptable in my opinion.
Touch responsiveness is liquid smooth in both power saver and high performance modes. Zooming in on bing maps, drawing with all ten fingers, swiping through metro - all a delightfully lag-free experience.
Windows 8 - ahhhhhh. This is my first device to run windows 8, and it's alright. It'll take some getting used to, but from my experience so far it is responsive and useful in its design. I really want to be able to pin a firefox link to my start screen, but it seems like all I can do is pin the firefox app instead.
As mentioned in a previous post, there are several issues with programs that aren't adapted to the ultra high res display. That discussion can be found here.
The sleeve I purchased for this machine was the "V7 Ultra Protective Sleeve for 13.3-Inch Ultrabook and Notebook". The fit is great (the slightest bit loose on the ends) and the quality is above par for such a low price. I spilled a significant amount of apple juice on the case just yesterday (shakes head) and it protected the notebook well.
    Overall Experience:
I'm pleased with my purchase. High price point? YES. For that amount I think the RAM should be at least 16gb and the SSD could be 500gb. Overall it is a pleasure to use and look at. Honestly so many things are right about this machine, it just allows me to focus on my work and stop worrying about my battery level or my trackpad glitching or the CPU overheating or lag or other petty issues that other notebooks make you deal with. That's what I like - its a smooth connection between me and getting things done while away from my desktop.
I haven't edited video on it yet, so that will come in a few weeks. I'm planning on buying an external drive to hold the files while I edit, then just plug it into my desktop when I get home ready to render.

    How's the new clickpad?
Does the keyboard flex under reasonable pressure?
Is the adaptive bar actually a pixel-based LCD or just a series of predefined patterns like the really old LCD displays?
The "new" clickpad is very slick. The texture is good but just a little too rubbery for my taste. In comparison with my brother's old T series, I prefer the X1.
Under reasonable pressure, absolutely not. The amount of force it takes for me to flex it is something I'd never do under normal use. It feels very solid in my opinion.
Upon a close inspection, the adaptive touch bar appears to be the old LCD type. I really want those media keys.

    Hey jtom234412,
Thanks for the question. Based on the information you have provided, it sounds like your device is not detected in iTunes for Windows. The following resource may help resolve this issue:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1538
Furthermore, if your device is in recovery mode (displaying an iTunes symbol, with a plug), see the relevant information under Step 5.

  • Brand New 5th Gen iPod Touch Won't Connect to Wifi

I just got a brand new 5th gen iPod Touch and expected to have a fun night of playing with it, but instead I was trying to figure out why it won't connect to my network. Not a good introduction to a product.
Here is the related info and troubleshooting steps I've already tried:
    - It will not connect to my wifi network
    - The iPod Touch says "Unable to join the network [network name]" when I try to connect to my network (as opposed to "Could not find the network [network name]" when it is not the correct network name)
    - I was able to connect to a random unsecure network nearby
    - Of course I power cycled my router and modem to reset them
    - My wireless router does not broadcast its SSID; I made it broadcast it and it still didn't connect
    - My network is password protected. I tried changing the security type, as well as turning the password off altogether, but nothing worked
    - My wireless router is a Netgear WGT624 v3
    - Even though it's brand new, I tried resetting the iPod Touch and the network settings
Does anyone have any tips or solutions for this?
I wasn't able to find other people with this problem, at least not with solutions that I haven't tried. It's really frustrating not being able to connect to the internet with my new device.
I will point out that my Android phone connected to my wifi network on the first try with no problems.
    Thanks

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
iOS: How to back up your data and set up as a new device
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
What security are yo using with the router?
Try as a test setting the router security to None.

    - Plug iPod (flashing do not disconnect ), iTunes starts (OK),

    Hi Martha
Some others in iPod discussions solve theirs troubles :
    - by buying and installing 1 Firewire card (6-pin port) + the Apple 6-pin FireWire cable : $ 70 - $ 110 or more for both items (good idea if the problem comes from the USB 2.O port and cable, so with FireWire connection created by Apple you just avoid any USB 2.0 connection. But, if you can quickly tranfer some songs and play them on the iPod... it doesen't sound like 1 USB 2.0 connection to me),
    - by connecting iPod on 1 Apple Computer. Know this is not THE solution. But so you can check if the problem comes from
your iPod or/and your USB 2.0 connection and at the end you temporarily can iPod all your songs. If you don't know somebody with an Apple computer, I'm quit sure... if you can go to 1 Apple store and explain this, they will let you check your iPod and USB 2.0 cable, hope so at least.
Since the 9.28 8pm, I just can't install iTunes 5.0.1.4, as soon as the installation process is complete, WinXPsp2 always display the same error msg :
« iTunes has had a problem and must close … sorry for… " ... even brand new files downloaded again and again and .... at Apple.com (http://appldnld.m7z.net)
For me, even if iTunes 5.0.1.4 is already on the market, this iTunes update is definitively not Windows XPsp2 compatible yet.
So, still waiting a working iTunes (n) version truly XPsp2 compatible from Apple/Microsoft people, and quickly because
warranty time is running and I still want to be able to exercise my warranty rights before the end of it.
    Good luck

  • Keyboard issue in brand new Satellite L50-A-1EK

    Hi,
I bought brand new Toshiba Satellite L50-A-1EK on 18/04/2014.
I unboxed my computer and i have "small issue" with keyboard.
It's really hard to push "g" and "h" actually those buttons working only when im pushing them hard.
Is it a reason to go to shop with warranty card or can I fix it myself?
    Thaks for reply.
    jot

    >It's really hard to push "g" and "h" actually those buttons working only when im pushing them hard.
    This is hardware related issue.
Either you would contact the dealer and would try to get the notebook replaced or you would contact the Toshiba authorized service provider available in your country to replace the keyboard.

  • Sleeping issue on brand new Satellite Pro U500-1EX

    Hi Guys,
    I've got a brand new Satellite Pro U500-1EX with Windows 7 64bit.
The laptop is having some issues with its sleep function. I am wondering if others have had the same problem - and if anyone knows anything that can be done.
    OK there are two issues;
    1. when the laptop enters sleep mode - it will come out of it on its own after some time. it goes to the login screen and wait for about another hour before going back to sleep. This is while plugged into power - and no LAN.
    2. When I close the lid to put the laptop to sleep - and while on the battery - after some time it will not power up at all. Plugging in the power will not do anything at all - the power light will not come on at all - suggesting the laptop does not even notice being plugged. I then have to take out the battery and switch the computer on (thereby losing any data I had when I put the computer to sleep!!).
So, have you seen this problem with your satellite pro's? Is it something common and to be ignored - or is there an easy solution to it?
    Thanks in advance.
    - Audette

I have actually updated the BIOS to the latest - one of the first things done when I got the laptop.
And, yes I do have the pre-installed OS that came with toshiba.
One thing I did notice is, if I have the laptop in standby and switch the laptop on again whilst in battery mode, then it will power up. But if I take out the power and plug in power before powering the laptop on- then it will not power up at all!!! Thereby, I have to take the battery out and put back in to get it to work. wierd huh??!!

  • Sound Issues on Brand New MacBook Pro

    Hi -
Sorry to re-post this again, but you never know if someone new is looking or if this is an issue with a whole bunch of MacBook Pro's that just went out.
I just got shipped to me (I bought from apple.com) a brand new fully loaded MacBook Pro 15".
The sound has gone out completely. Every now and then it will come back on, but 90% of the time it's just out. I can not figure out what is triggering it to work when it does.
I spent some time on the phone with support and they think it's a hardware issue that my only options are the send it back for a new one or send it in for repair - which both suck, cause they don't give you a replacement one, and I would have to migrate everything back to my old Powerbook which is a dinosaur.
Is anyone else having these issues? I can't be the only one!
Please let me know if any of you have found a fix.
The sound icon in in the top right bar, when I hit the F11 and F12 key the icon comes up like it's working there is just no sound. The Sound Preference appears as normal, etc.
    Thanks- Erik

If you plug in headphones or external speakers, do you get any sound through them? If you go to the sound preferences pane, do the built-in speakers show up as an output option?
The headphone jack has a sensor which turns off the built-in speakers when it senses headphones or speakers are plugged in. Sometimes that sensor can get stuck. Have you tried inserting and removing headphones a few times?
I'm sure you've been through this possibility already, but just in case...

  • Issue with brand new iPod Nano 7g No Phone, can't contact Apple

    Hi everyone,
I just got my brand new iPod Nano the other day, when I opened it up and took the sticker off, I saw a large scratch down the screen. That was annoying enough but the scratch affects the touchscreen ability and it's very tough to ignore.
So like a normal person I want to contact Apple to try and resolve this, but I've hit another barrier. I only have one phone, a mobile and that's bust up. No way I can take or recieve calls unless I become psychic as the speaker and mic are broken. So i'm wondering if there's any other way I can contact Apple?
My nearest Apple store is about a 2 hour drive away as I live in the middle of nowhere, helpfully...
Totally new to this place so any help is appreciated.
    Thanks

So i'm wondering if there's any other way I can contact Apple?
Either borrow a cell or a landline phone.  I find it hard to believe no one in your neighborhood, family, school or job have no phone.

  • The loading icon is continuously displayed on my brand new iPad2

The loading icon on both my new iPAD2 and my old iPhone 4S are continually cycling.  Just started toay on my iPhone -- olny got the iPAD2 yesterday so may have been doing it yesterday also.  Have not found anything that makes it stop -- have turned everything off in settings and airplan mode ON but still spinning.

I will gladly make a suggestion. A brand new "out of the box" iPad should not have a faulty sleep/power button. If you bought it yesterday, I would return it tomorrow - or at least take it back to the store and let the retailer look at it - Apple Store, Best Buy - doesn't matter where you bought it.
I think I would nicely plead the store for a new device. If it didn't work out of the box.

  • Serious Issues with brand new iPad 3

Ok so I was given a brand new iPad 3 as a gift on Sunday.  And since then my life has been stressful!!
Email: When I click on the email icon up comes a message saying Unable to Move Message, referring to one of the first emails I tried to delete. So, no email program then.
Music: My windows media files of literally hundreds of ripped CD's will not copy across. The system is not interested and the computer hangs after a few seconds. So no music program then.
Documents: I don't know how to get literally a decades worth of MS Word docs onto my iPad. The Doc app I downloaded has no instruction page, so I don't even know how to underline a heading (it's called Goodreader). So no document program.
Calendar: When I tried to sync my outlook calendar instead of syncing it, it wiped it clean and dumped the appointments onto the iPad. This means with no appointments now on Outlook, it has synced with Google Calendar and wiped Google calendar clean and in turn wiped my blackberry clean of a year's worth of appointments. I am royally and truly stuffed now.
I have run out of patience with this and I really, really need help!!

  • New 2014 X1 Carbon owner very unhappy.

I received my new X1 model (i7 Haswell Touchscreen) a couple days ago and here are my thoughts
    - BAD keyboard. I just don't know what Lenovo was thinking! The feeling of the buttons is ok, but I'm constantly having to look down at it. The Home, End, Delete, Backspace placements aren't intuitive and have caused many errors.
    - Adaptive Keys are nonsensical!!! I thought we were going to be able to program them? They're constantly changing and flickering.. just a huge annoyance. If you have browswers, MS programs, PS, and other programs open at the same time it's a nightmare! And the LCD strip is a bit cheap looking too.
    - Screen: The images lack sharpness and text is blurry at times! Brightness and Color replication are decent, but both could be much better. There's some edge light bleed as well which you'll notice on black screens and 16:9 content. My wife has a Mac and her screen is just so much better. The X1 screen is also pretty reflective for what it claims to be "non-reflective".
    - Trackpad.. it has decent feedback & gliding, but I'm missing the buttons a lot more than I thought I would when I first saw the design. I wouldn't say I hate it, but I don't much enjoy it either.
    - Gesture Controls: these are pretty silly and limited. There's also too much lag. They're mildly fun to play around with once, but I would never use them again.
    Conclusion:
I have owned 5 different ThinkPads over time and have been very loyal to IBM & ThinkPad over the years, but I simply can not recommend the new X1 to anyone for serious business purposes. There's too many interface areas that hamper your production. I'm very disappointed with this release by Lenovo.
Of course if you're more of a casual media user, then the X1 wouldn't be for you. The X1 line is supposed to cater to business users, but Lenovo has actually hurt that experience here.
The build is the only thing I'm relatively satisfied with - it's pretty solid and nice to the touch. And I've always preferred a 14" screen size. But these two things aren't nearly enough for this i7 machine and its price. Bottom line, there's too many functionality issues that I can't get over. It's just not an enjoyable user experience.
If Lenovo would've just made this with the X1 Gen 1's keyboard and touchpad, I would've liked it so much more. Unfortunately, the Gen 1's screen was so horrible that I ruled it out a long a time ago.

What astonishes me the most about the new X1 Carbon keyboard is the removal of the Insert key.
I'm looking at the programs I have running right now and use every day, and all of the following have important keyboard shortcuts that use the Insert key, either by itself or combined with other keys:
    IntelliJ IDEA
    Komodo IDE
    Visual Studio 2013
    SmartGit/Hg
    SecureCRT
    Microsoft Excel
    Take Command
    Beyond Compare
    pgAdmin III
    Paintshop Pro X6
I guess ThinkPad users aren't expected to use programs like these any more.

  • Issue with brand new blackberry

    hello guys
iv just bought a new blackberry from my local phone shop and stupidly said to the guy i would be able to set it up as im a techy guy (usually fixing every one else's problems) and being a iphone user, mac, windows and android i assumed the blackberry would be as easy..... but i was wrong it seems
so a little back ground,    im on the 3 network, with "all you can eat" data as my tinternet (which coveres my blackberry, bbm ect)
i cant set up my blackberry pin or ID or anything on the device (therefore the blackberry world dosent work nore anything else)  it keeps telling me the phones not connected to the network (when it clearly is if i can view the bbc or any other random website i choose) i can install apps through the browser though
this is on wifi,  on the phone network it dosent even go that far
the error when trying to sign into blackberry ID - unable to connnect with blackberry id. please sign in now (stupid question as i cant???)or try again later. data services are required for blackberry id and can be turned on in the mobile network settings
    any ideas at all?
    thanks guys
    Gaz

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
Start by getting your voice services (calls, voice mail, SMS) working...without those, nothing else will matter. Make 100% sure that those are working via the carrier network (turn off WiFi to be sure) before you proceed -- bypass any prompts or anything else it requests concerning data (e.g., skip over the BB ID login). If they are not working, then ring up the provider for assistance.
After voice services are working, then with a strong carrier network signal (again, not WiFi), I suggest the following steps, in order, even if they seem redundant to what you have already tried (steps 1 and 2 each should result in a message coming to your BB...please wait for that before proceeding to the next step):
    1) Register HRT
KB00510 How to register a BlackBerry smartphone with the wireless network
Please wait for one "registration" message to arrive to your Messages app
    2) Delete and Resend Service Books (pre-BB10 devices only)
KB05000Delete the service book for the BlackBerry Internet Service email account from the BlackBerry smartphone
If you have no CMIME entry, then skip the deletion
KB02830 Send the service books for the BlackBerry Internet Service
Please wait for "Activation" Messages, one per already configured email account, to arrive in your Messages. If you have no already configured email accounts, please wait 1 hour.
    3) Reboot
Pre-BB10 Devices ONLY. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes.
BB10 Devices. Hold the top button down until the counter reaches zero. Wait for the device to be fully shut down (e.g., nothing at all displayed on the screen, no LED lights, etc.). Hold the top button until the red LED is lit. Wait through the full boot-up process. IF this fails, you can attempt the battery-pull method above, but it is normally NOT recommended unless nothing else works.
See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.
Hopefully that will get things going again for you! If not, then you should contact your mobile service provider for formal support.
    Good luck!

  • Performance issue with brand new intel iMac extreme

I am at a loss to explain a problem I've been having and I thought I might put it out to you guys.
In September I purchased a macbook Pro (2.4 ghz, 4 GB RAM) to use in video editing with Final Cut Pro, and for the most part I've been thrilled. I use 1TB LaCie external drives connected via FW800, and perform Multiclip editing with 4-5 video streams at a time and only on occasion have dropped frames during the editing process.
In December I determined that I needed to have an additional system, and thought a 2.8Ghz Intel iMac extreme would be an excellent choice, since for the same price I could get a little more power in the processor, more hard drive space and a bigger screen to work on. When we picked up the new system in the store (The Grove Apple Store in LA), we had them upgrade the memory to 4GB.
Since day one we have had performance issues, including problems playing streaming and DVD video, severe delays mounting and unmounting drives (firewire and USB) and application images, and freezing while doing even simple tasks like printing or checking email. These problems occur even while there are no external drives are connected. I have none of these issues with the Macbook Pro, which has virtually an identical set of programs installed, and both running the same version of Leopard.
I already took the original iMac back to the store, and they exchanged it, but did not have 4GB sets of RAM in stock so they took the RAM from the original machine and put it in the new one. They said if I continued to have problems then it was most likely the RAM and I should come back when they got more in stock. I DID have the same problems with the new machine, and took it back to the Apple Store and they swapped the memory. It seemed to improve the issue, but now I'm seeing the same severe performance issues again.
All tech support can do is tell me to do a PRAM reset, which seems to improve things very temporarily (but that may be my imagination) or have me restart, which at least has the ability to make the printing of documents capable.
What I'm wondering is if it is likely that the RAM is the issue and I just got another bad batch, or if the iMac has some weird glitch that isn't present in the macbook Pro...?? Or could I have possibly gotten 2 bad systems in a row? It's extremely frustrating, and I KNOW it shouldn't be this way! It's so bad I get better performance out of my single-core G5 tower! How do I get a good working system that operates like it should? Am I better off getting another Macbook Pro? I'd rather not for several reasons...
I have xbench on both the MBP and the iMac and can provide test numbers if they'll help, as well as any other info.
Thank you so much for reading my novella of a post and also for any insight you have!
    Best,
    Travis

    Hi!
I got the same problem with my MacBook when it still was new in may 2006. It was supposed to be one of the faster Laptops around but it was soooo slow it drove me nuts. I can only advise to have a look if there is something hugging up your RAM and run some tests using these programs on your machine:
    Xbench:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10081
    MenuMeters:
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10451
If they show any unusual results you might have your problem...
As to my problem with the MacBook: I did a complete re-install (writing the harddisk over with zeroes) and suddenly everything was just fine. (But be sure to back all your files before that, I learned this one the hard way.) I know it is just a standard answer, but it worked out for me this time...
Hope this helps in some ways.
    Cheers,
    Rene

  • Banding issue with brand new MG7550 in Win 8.1

    Hi there,
I'm running some test prints on a new Pixma MG7550, but I'm getting a consistent vertical banding on landscape photo prints (i.e. horizontal bands on portrait prints).  It's really noticable on gradients, but is there regardless of colour.  It looks like a slightly darker line every 8mm or so.
    Here are the details:
    Pixma MG7550 (Firmware 2.020)
Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit (Auto update enabled and up to date)
Printer installed on network via ethernet (no other connection)
    Canon inkjet printer driver 2.80
    Stock (included) cartridges installed
    Printing from Windows photo viewer
A4 HP glossy photo paper (landscape mode)
For what it's worth, I was very careful in the setup process and followed all the instructions to the letter.
The print tests look fine, no missing content or obvious errors.  The printed image looks just like the reference one.
I've run nozzle checks, head alignments and the clean utility.
I haven't run a deep clean as I understand that this is only necessary when you are sure it is a cleaning problem and I really don't know.
I've updated the printer firmware, but the problem is exactly the same, before and after.
I suspect it may be a Windows 8.1 issue, but only because the Canon site refers to a similar-sounding problem in Windows Vista (where it suggests upgrading to Service Pack 2).
If anyone can offer any ideas, I would really appreciate it.
    Thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Glad it worked out.
I have a Pixma Pro-100 with XPS driver, so my experience is based on that, but I believe they all work the same. As far as the XPS driver is concerned, when you install the XPS driver the computer sees two printers - an MG7550 and an MG7550XPS. If you don't make the XPS printer your default printer in Windows, or specifically choose the XPS printer from the Print menu of your application, then the XPS driver isn't being used.
There is also a lot of Internet discussion over whether or not Windows has a 16-bit printing process.
I have experimented with both. 1. I have not seen a photo printing quality difference visually with XPS over non-XPS. 2. Using the XPS driver hasn't created any negatives that I have seen.  So, I use the XPS version just in case there are some subtle benefits I don't see.
But, if you want XPS then you need to be sure to select it.
The print head sticking option moves the head further from the paper; usually selected for heavier weight paper. I don't know anything about the HP paper you are using, and don't know if there a re negatives with selecting it for lighter weight paper, but since you made two changes I would suggest you uncheck that option and print from PS just to see if there is a difference.
