Display JPEG files not on desktop as thumbnails, not generic icons

I understand from previous forum entries that bringing up menu with command-J and checking "show icon preview" will display image files ON THE DESKTOP as thumbnails. This has worked fine for me. However, most of my image files are not on the desktop.
How do I get the system to display all JPEGs and other images not on the desktop as thumbnails. These are in folders, either on the startup volume or on other volumes.
My son who is a PC user was surprised that my Mac image folders contained all those generic icons and not thumbnails, like he is used to on his PC.
Hope there is an easy answer to this, and I greatly appreciate your help.

I have continued working on this issue since I posed the question, and discovered that I have to have my images in "icon display", not "list display" (which I have usually used).
When I changed to icon display, the menu from command-j allowed me to display all my icons as thumbnails.
The menu (command-j) from the list display doesn't give that option, so I was stumped until I stumbled on to this detail.
Thanks again to all who have helped me in the past on these forums. You're the best.

  • .MTS files in elements organizer: no thumbnails, not playing

Some google searching shows that i´m not alone with this problem, but i haven´t found a solution.
.MTS files plays in premiere elements (lagging terribly though) but not in elements organizer, where i get this error message:
Updated quicktime as suggested, no improvement.
Source of .MTS files is a Panasonic G5.
Running W7 64 bit. same problems in both elements organizer 11 & 12.
If it was a codec issue i assume it would not play in Premier elements either?
    Any suggestions?

    Hi A.T.
    1.  I'm using Premiere Elements 9.  I have an Asus laptop with windows 8.1
    2.  I believe i have the latest driver.  I have Intel HD Graphics.  I ran a check to look for updated drivers and it came back as saying I had the latest.
    Background
I've only had the laptop since October so that's how long the program has been on the computer.
I was able to use it a few days ago.  At that time I had been using video from the same camera but that time it I had saved it originally to the camera's internal memory.  When I had the problem last night it was with video I had saved to a memory card.  A message which I do not remember came up asking if I'd like to change the preset as my current settings didn't match the video format.  I said yes and then nothing worked after that.  I can't even view the project I did several days ago now either.
How I search for the presets?  I've never changed these before.
It is AVCHD file type and 1080 but I am unfamiliar with the how to know anything further.

You put yourself at a disadvantage by tagging on to an older thread and not starting a new thread of your own. I just saw your post now.
So let us get to the troubleshooting...
    1. What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system is it running?
    2. This has all the symptoms of a display problem. Do you have the latest version of your video card/graphics card according to the web site of the manufacturer of the card? If so, we are going to need to delete the BadDrivers.txt file. But I need the information in "1" to tell you how to get there and do that.
    Some background information please....
    1. How long have you been working with this version on its current computer operating system?
    2. How would you class this issue "It worked before but not now" or "it never worked before"?
    3. What is your project preset?
    4. What are the properties of this .mts files...AVCHD video compression? 1080i or 1080p or other?
    More later in the morning.

  • Numbers file on the Desktop that does not exist??

I have a newly set up MacBook Pro with Lion 10.7.2.  I have created a numbers file that is NOT saved on the Desktop.  I have an icon of that file on the Desktop and can select it but the file doesn't exist.  I have navigated to the folder as su in Terminal and the file doesn't exist. The icon shows on the Desktop though.
The numbers document you can see above the selected is the numbers document that I saved after I had seen what I have described above.  When I saved it there was no prompt to overwrite the file because.........it doesn't exist!!
    Ideas anyone??

I may be making a mistake by even mentioning this, but this may be a rare case for enabling the Root User to delete the file if that is what you want to do. In almost every case, it's not a good idea to tell people to enable Root. So other more experienced users may have other suggestions. But if you log in as Root, try to delete the file, then log back out of Root, you should be OK.   Carefully read here first about Enabling Root.

  • Displaying jpeg files

Hi, I wanted to load some jpeg files on the applet that I'm making, but I want the images to appear smaller than their actual size. Is there a way to do this without having to shrink the actual jpeg files? Thanks.

  • Lightroom 5 - JPEG files saved to folder but did not import into catalog

I am using Lightroom 5. My camera is set to save each image as RAW & JPEG. At import, I chose to "Copy as DNG". In the Lightroom catalog only the DNG files are imported. However, in the folder there are DNG files and JPEG files. Why didn't my JPEG images import to the catalog?

Because you probably haven't selected the option on the General Tab of the Preferences to "Treat JPEG files next to raw files as separate photos".

  • How do I programmatically display jpeg files on the front panel

    Hi,
I would like to be able to programmatically display various jpeg images on the front panel of a VI. I would mostly like to be able to display one image at a time and have the ability to programmatically change the image to different ones under program control. I found a picture indicator but not sure how to use if or if this is the best way. Thanks for any help.
    Dave Adams

Yes, you can use a picture indicator.
The attached simple codelet shows how to display a jpeg image on it (Make sure the image indicator is big enough).

  • JPEG file reading wierd bug using ImageIO.read and buffer strategy

OK I have a slightly (!) bizzare problem. I have a program in Java 1.5.0 /5.0 which is fundamentally using a full screen exclusive mode window to display images loaded from files using ImageIO.read(file). I am getting the graphics context of the buffer strategy used on the FSEM window, and then drawing onto that the image that I have loaded using graphics.drawImage(ImageObj, 0,0, null).
Now ordinarily this works fine, but I have (after much head scratching) discovered that certain specific jpeg images cause me problems. If I load one of these jpeg images, then it loads in with ImageIO.read fine and I get no errors, but the program locks up on the drawImage(ImageObj, 0,0,null) command in the rendering engine. It doesn't crash, but the CPU usage goes to 100% and stays there, and the method never returns. The image is never displayed on screen obviously, as the program never gets to call bufferStrategy.show() for these images. I have to forcibly terminate the VM to get out of the program.
Does anyone know what is going on here? Is there some extraneous meta data in the dodgy jpeg files that is doing this? I don't know what 'extras' you can have stored on a jpeg that would cause this behaviour, and I don't know what restrictions there are in the jpeg file reader in Java.
Its not a major bother to me (now I figured out whats causing it!), as I can just resave a duff jpeg in my image editing app and it will work fine. I just don't know whether I should submit it as a bug or not, and also I thought it would be useful for others to know of this strange behaviour - if I had known about it I would have saved myself about 8 hours!
    Thanks
    Alex

Oh I forgot to add - I am resizing the images to the screen size using
    Image.getScaledInstance(deviceBounds.width,
    deviceBounds.height,
    Image.SCALE_AREA_AVERAGING);
and then drawing the scaled image onto the graphics context.

  • IPhoto '08 created 26,000 zero KB files on my desktop. help me delete them

i have a 26,000 picture iphoto '08 library. when i had all pictures selected, a lagging finder response led to me accidentally dragging those files to the desktop. realizing my error, i force quit everything. i ended up with literally 26,000 zero KB "hidden" jpeg files on my desktop. this makes my finder extremely slow and virtually useless.
i tried deleting these zero kb gremlins, but i am prompted to confirm every single deletion, which ***** worse than you can imagine. apparently they are in use by a program, even though i have since deleted iphoto, hence the prompts for every file. (fwiw, i now use aperture 2.1)
i had this problem once before and i found a unix prompt on the internet that moved everything on the desktop into a folder. then i used another prompt to delete that folder, and that was that. basically i bypassed the finder, and all of the associated confirmation pop-up messages, using my imac's terminal.
i've spent about a week searching for this prompt, but to no avail. then i tried learning basic unix commands, but i really have no idea what i'm doing. i tried this command and it didn't work:
    piahi-imac:~ dan$ mv /Users/dan/Desktop/*.jpg /Users/dan/crap
-bash: /bin/mv: Argument list too long
i called apple care's legendary tech support, and the guy said "uh, we don't do terminal support. you can really screw up your computer that way." he then suggested i just click "confirm" 26,000 times.
    any suggestions?

  • Jpg file on my desktop that won't go away

There is a jpg. file on my desktop that will not go away. It's like it is a part of my desktop background because I can't click on it. I deleted it a long time ago but the image is still there. Any tips?

    Try this:
    1. Relaunch Finder (Command-Option-esc and choose Finder to relaunch).
    2. If that doesn't work, restart your computer.
    3. If that doesn't work, reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
Post back if any of the above worked.

  • Generic Icon vs. Thumbnail Icon

What would cause a photo (jpeg file) to show up in Finder with an icon that is a thumbnail of the actual photo vs. a generic icon? The two cases seem to lead to different behavior in a plug-in that I use (Mail Attachments Iconizer) in Mail. When attached to an email, the files with thumbnail icons open up in the body of the email whereas the files with generic icons do not (which is the desired behavior)?
    Thanks.

That doesn't appear to be the case. Show Icon Preview is unchecked. Furthermore, other jpeg files in the same folder have generic icons.
I should add that the files with thumbnail view as icons were edited in Photoshop in OS 10.4 (my second drive boots into 10.4 to allow me to use an older version of Photoshop). This folder is on a partition of my 10.5 drive. I am viewing the folder in 10.5 That could be why these files show up differently, but I don't understand why it should be so.

  • How can I get iPhoto to display ONLY file numbers of pictures and not document titles when displayed as thumbnails?

I am a pro photographer and I've never used iPhoto. I use a combination of Adobe's Bridge, Lightroom & Photoshop programmes.  I've sent a disk of images to a client and they cannot see the file numbers of the images.  Their version of iPhoto only displays the document title that I have embedded in the metadata when importing the images into Bridge.
When I ran a test and imported the same images into my version of iPhoto(7.1.5, since you ask) some of the thumbnails displayed the file number while others displayed the document title.  Why does this happen?  Can I make it stop?  How do I make iPhoto display just the file number in thumbnail mode and not the document title?
When I view the images in Bridge, all I see is the file number but I can't convince the client to use the programme even though they have it.  Any help/guidance will be very gratefuly received.
    Many thanks,
    Adam.

In every version prior to iPhoto 11:
Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and right click on it. From the resulting menu select 'Show File...
    In iPhoto 11:
Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original...

  • Need help exporting thumbnails (jpeg files are empty)

    Hello,
I'm having problems loading photos from my thumbnails in iPhoto. If I try to load a photo nothing happens, even after several minutes. My library has around 500 images, so I can't imagine it would take very long to load.
If I try to export a photo it just creates an empty jpeg file. I can get data on the photo (ie size, width, height) from inside iPhoto, but the actual jpeg file appears empty. So, is there anyway to export just the thumbnail? I'd rather have a smaller image of the original than nothing at all.
    Regards,
    Rob
    Powerbook G4 Mac OS X (10.3.9) iPhoto 5.0.4

however, during this process I got the following error message for many of the photos:
The following files could not be imported (they may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain data).
    Hello Rob,
this message means that you have this image in your library already, it prevents from duplicate.
The simplest way I found to solve this type of issue is to choose a picture that does not show up, but were you can see the thumbnail. Check the name (so called tittle) of the picture in iPhoto via info and find it on the drive via finder "apple-F" key combination (or menu edit/find/find).
1 - you find it under your iPhoto Library tree folder
1-1 - try to find out if folders names (iPhoto Library/2006/07/10/...which means : iPhoto Library/"year"/"month"/"day") has been changed. If no change has been done with finder, drag (do not copy) this pict out on desktop or other folder you can use, then drag it back in iPhoto window (not in finder folder), it should go back in the correct folder under iPhoto Library and show up again in full size.
check it first for several picts, if you find that all your picts are with the same problem you can consider taking all your picts out with finder and drag them back in iPhoto window
1-2 - you could also consider to repair your library by starting iPhoto holding down command-apple keys, but I have never tried it.
2 - your pict is NOT in iPhoto Library folder BUT on your drive, drag it back in iPhoto window, not in finder folder directly. It should show up in the correct location in iPhoto. You may have 2 thumbnails with same name in iPhoto window, just delete the one where you can't see full size pict.
this is unlikely to be the case from my point of view
3- your pict is not anymore on your drive... Somebody must have erased it directly from folder, meaning messing up directly in iPhoto library folder. Then check again 1-1.
this is unlikely to be the case from my point of view
You see the thumbnails because iPhoto it is a database that create thumbnails when importing pict, and they will last until you delete your pict within iPhoto. iPhoto refreshes it's database at that time. By doing things directly under finder just does not allow iPhoto database to be "aware" of what you are doing... so it cannot refresh it correctly. Then it messes up the complete stuff.
Hope this can help you, if not please post back an answer,
    Best regards,
    François
