Display randomly sleep at times?
At odd times, the display and keyboard backlight of my Macbook randomly sleep. The computer continues to wake after I click the trackpad, or press a few keys. The display sleep is not as a result of inactivity, while I am using it, typing, surfing or otherwise, it will sleep. It sometimes acts as a flicker because I am typing as it sleeps and wakes. The same thing can be reproduced by pressing the controlshifteject buttons.
Do I need my logic board replaced? Should I just return it?
Apparently, the issue deals with the Logic board, and the motion sensor. I'm sure its repairable, unfortunately, Apple has lost me as a customer. I found that the audio device in my new Macs powersaves, making an annoying poping sound, that can be found here > http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2108844&tstart=0 .
Other than that, for anyone reading this, the "display sleeps while im typing" glich is a hardware issue.

23" Display Shuts Down After A Random Amount of Time While Gaming.
Hello,
I have a 23" Display that i've had for over 6 months. During the summer my room can get around 80 degrees.
Today (Auguest 20th) I was playing World Of Warcraft and after being on for a couple hours the monitor turned off and would not re-display when turned off then on again. However I could still navigate blindly and the sound was still functioning. Upon touching the monitor itself it was pretty hot, but it has been that hot for parts of the summer already.
So I decided to shut everything down and came back an hour later to turn the computer on and the monitor started to display again. When I started to play WoW again, after a random amount of time, the monitor shut off again and I was still able to navigate blindly etc...
My monitor is also not connected to a MaC, but a regular PC.
Is this a video card issue? Heat issue?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Edit Also when I am not gaming my computer has not blacked out and I currently have been on the computer w/o gaming for about 2 hours and everthing is fine.

Welcome to Discussions!
The blackout would most likely be a function of the video card. Do you have temperature monitoring for the video card? A hot GPU could result in loss of picture, as well as artifacts, and other graphic anomalies.
Might be a good idea to look at getting some additional cooling on the graphics card.
Also, stand the ACD power brick on edge- this will help the power brick to cool better. -
Macbook Pro Early 2009 Randomly Sleeps / Black Screen While In use
My macbook pro Early 2009, randomly goes to sleep while I am using the computer, I first noticed it occuring while I was using the mini display adapter to a computer monitor, and using a second monitor and watching a movie, the screen would go blank and I would have to wake it from sleep for it to come back on, sometimes closing the lid, sometimes pressing the trackpad, or keyboard to get it to work again, sometimes it would go back to sleep within 1 minute of waking.
I assume the problem could have been from perhaps water damage, as I recently used a wet paper towel to clean my keyboard, and perhaps the paper towel was a little to moist, not overly but perhaps just enough to damage the sleep sensor. I am still unsure where that is located, the only other problem I have noticed with the computer is my [battery service indicator] notification has been on for the last year, but since I never used the battery, I always have it plugged in at the desk I never bothered getting it serviced. So
I'm assuming its the Sleep Sensor? but here is what I hace done, just to make sure its not software. I was orignaly running 10.8, and after being frustrated while watching a movie and having my computer sleep every 2 minutes, I whipped my hardrive, put 10.9 developers preview on a usb and installed that.
On 10.9 I can swipe with 3 fingers on the trackpad and the display appears but if i let go of the swipe it goes back to black screen.
I can see Icons like, brightness, and sound, when adjusting the levels, but screen is black behind the icons
The mouse pointer cursor is visible but the screen is black
I can move the mouse and hear system sounds, but screen is black. Now I have to actually restart the computer because It seems like I cannot wake it up at all.
So I formatted the hardrive again and
I tried reinstalling Leopard OSX , as that was the disc that came with the mac,
but have Same problems in 10.5, 10.6, 10.7, 10.8 I upgraged to developer 10.9 to see if the problem would fix, but still occurs.
I ran hardware diagnostic off the leopard disc 2, by pressing the D key on startup with disc in drive, extended hardware test reported no problems.
I SMC reset and PRAM reset, [control]+[option]+[shift]+[powerbutton] while computer is turned off with power plugged in
and after that failed I tried pressing [Option]+[Command]+[P]+[R] before startup chime, chime repeat let go of keys and it booted normally.
Then computer randomly sleeps while in use, while using safari and it has happened 3 times within 2 minutes of typing this.
I have downloaded a program called InsomniaX, and activated the disable sleep for Lid and Idle, but now the screen will randomly just go black and then turn back on, sometimes it will just black screen for 10 seconds and come back on, altho after changing some more of the settings It appears to be not as frequent. It hasen't gone to sleep since writing this entire paragraph, so thats a good sign.
I was going to take it into the apple store, and have them run diagnostics, but I hate going into those stores because of all the iphone people, crowding the place.
Well my screen just blacked and came back within 10 seconds on while I typing this line so InsomniaX didn't work. I hope having the sleep sensor replaced isn't too expensive, or if my model even has such a sensor.
I read on another topic that this problem can be replicated by users putting a magnet on their laptop, something like an iphone or a money clip or even having one of these in their pocket while using the macbook on their lap. I have not had anything near the computer, so I have a different problem.
Just thought Id document this, will let you know what happens after the diagnostic, I tried apple support, and they said I did more than they would have done, so he couldn't really tell me anything besides take it into genius bar, (is that what its still called) and have them run diagnostic, [note its different than the hardware test on the cd]
and my computer screen goes black again, wow..Hi pictureswithPS, welcome to Apple Discussions!
1. I have an original late-2008 unibody MBP that was purchased a week after the introduction. I have never had a single "black screen of death" ever, and I do some gaming under OS X on my machine. The heat issues are, in my humble opinion, greatly exaggerated. Does the machine get warm? Yes. However, any computer with this much power in this thin of an enclosure is going to get warm. Mine has never crashed, frozen, black screened, etc. once.
2. I don't think PS is particularly intensive on the graphics card. It may use the graphics card, yes, but I don't think it will be quite as intensive as a 3D modeling application or 3D games. I would doubt you would ever run into problems anyway.
3. Lastly I am aware that their are tools to manage fan speed behavior - as a workaround to cool down temperatures. Using this software would it void the warranty that is provided by Apple?
No, it wouldn't likely void the warranty. However, if your fans die prematurely as a result of running them at high speeds for extended periods of time, I doubt Apple would be especially happy about replacing them. I do not use any 3rd party tools to manage my fans, and never will. It is simply not necessary.

Display randomly falling asleep
My PowerBook has begun to randomly go into sleep mode while I am in the process of using it. The screen simply goes dark, the sleep light indicator on the front of the computer begins to slowly flash, but it is only half as bright as full sleep mode. If I close the lid, the sleep light indicator will immediately begin flashing at normal brightness. When I open the lid, everything is back to normal.
I have checked on my energy settings in System Preferences. This has happened about five times today. Does anybody have any suggestions as to what might be causing the problem as well as possible solutions? My five and a half year-old 17" G4—which until now has worked almost flawlessly—just started displaying this behavior on Thursday. Brief flickers to a black screen (usually twice in quick succession) followed by immediately going to sleep. I can always wake it up from sleep mode (for now), but it's annoying and makes it difficult to concentrate. If I close the lid and the computer goes to sleep for more than a few minutes, when it wakes up the screen is almost (but not entirely) dimmed out, and the only way to resume normal brightness is execute a forced shutdown, after which it's fine.
I've read everything here and on the other online forums, which suggest that the problem is tied to either the temperature sensor or the ambient light sensors. And I've come across two solutions (possibly related) that seem to work for me. First go to System Preferences and disable the trackpad when a mouse is plugged in (I almost always use a mouse). Since I've done that, there have been no random sleep episodes. Second, when shutting down for the night (or anytime), tell the computer to go to sleep (or let it go to sleep on its own, as dictated by System Preferences) but don't shut the case. This allows it to wake up normally with normal screen brightness.
A very helpful "genius" at my local Apple Store (whom I saw before hitting on the interim fixes above) said the problem could also be a failure of the mechanical switch that helps put the computer to sleep. The only permanent solution is to replace the entire top case (the piece covering the trackpad and keyboard), to which these sensors and the switch are attached. If your laptop is more than five years old, you will need to get the repair done by an authorized third-party company, as Apple no longer stocks the necessary parts. -
W520 random sleeping and black screens - videos of issue attached
Btw my mobo, cpu, memory i believe were all replaced last time i took it in with this issue...
Still getting it consistantly:
Random Black Screens and Random Sleeping:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=AvWl9ck26xI
Black Screen:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=7A3NqnC80iU
I thought before maybe its Bluetooth related as sometimes when screen would turn black and then come back, I would get a 'Bluetooth Device Not Discoverable'. So turned off Bluetooth in the BIOS, but still having display/sleep issues.
I removed hte Lenovo Power Manager/PM Driver, and turned off sleeping in the Windows power settings (in every setting including if Low Battery Action). Any ideas?
I just upgraded to a 3 year warranty (the more expensive one), should i just ask to replace mobo/cpu/memory again or will Lenovo actually test it for other issues?
Thanks,
Ari
Solved!
Go to Solution.Well my issue wasn't an external monitor... it would goto sleep by itself when Im trying to write code/programming... then randomly wake and go back to sleep up constantly ruining workflow (or wait a few hours Im sleeping at odd times in the morning lol). or the monitor would turn black suddenly. I think I tested via external monitor but didn't matter what result was, the random sleeping issues indicated a larger issue.
It was a crimped connector the 1st time it went back to Lenovo. the past 4/5 times its gone back i think they are stumped. For me, Im honestly not sure... it might be the OS is on a mSATA instead of the regular hard drive and Windows doesnt know how to handle that hardware.
Their newer W540 manual seems to indicate do an OS on mSATA at your expense.
Do you have an mSATA OS? Anyway, thats a very small chance. not sure. -
How do I put an external display to sleep when I am using my MacBook Air for presentation?
How do I put an external display to sleep when I am using my MacBook Air for presentation? I do not want to go to the projector just to turn it off and turn on again after a while? Is there a keyboard shortcut for that?
I want to be able to sleep the external display and at the same time do things in the MacBook.( This feature is useful for me so that I can prepare some things and so that my audience will not see what I am about to show them.)
Is there a feature for Mountain Lion? -
MBA not always recognizes external display after sleep
Hi,
I have a 2011 MBA and use it on a external display (Dell 2709w) with the lid open. The issue with this MBA is that after sleep it often (every second time I wake it up) doesn't show anything on my external monitor. In order that the external monitor works again I have to plug the DVI cord out and in or press recognize monitors under monitor settings.
I also did a PMC and SMC reset but both did not help.
I have also done a complete reinstall witch did not help as well.
I also did a test with a MBA from a friend (exact same model) and his always works with the external display after sleep while mine only works every second time.
Could this be a hardware defect? sound pretty strange to me, but who knows...I have managed to make the Apple Hardware test by just pressing "D" while restarting. The test, however, did not find any error - but this does not surprise me as I think it only tests the ram.

13" MacBook Pro and Apple 27" LED Display Not Sleeping Properly
I recently purchased a new 13" MacBook Pro (MacBookPro8,1) and a 27" Apple LED Cinema Display. When they are connected the computer occasionally has a problem being put to sleep. When clicking sleep, the monitor will take a little while to shut off, but in about 10 seconds, it will turn back on. Immediately when turning on, the image on the screen is quite scrambled (it does correct itself). Usually, if I attempt to put it to sleep multiple times, it will end up working. When it does go to sleep (correctly), the screen will turn off much faster than the times where it doesn't sleep.
Anyone else have a similar issue they found a fix to? When speaking to Apple support, they thought it was part of an issue with 10.6.6, however, the update to 10.6.7 did not solve the issue.
PS - I keep my MacBook Pro lid closed when using the display.By the way, please be aware of a scam - iyogi

I saw Apple support and called the number, it ended when I was asked to pay to fix my problem.
I'm not aware of the company, but from what you said I don't see how that's a scam. The advert clearly only says the call is free, not the support. Why should they give free technical support? -
Page Displaying Randomly in Dreamweaver CS5
Has anyone had any issues with a page loading randomly and other times displaying the message "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage". This is when you view the site in IE8 after highlighting index.htm and pressing F12 from Dreamweaver. I'm building the site using Dreamweaver CS5. Things I've done so far to try and work out where it is failing:
1. I have a number of other menu items working perfectly. I have checked the code against the other menus that are working perfectly. This includes comparing menu.htm, menu.js and checking the code at the top of page01.htm.
2. Copied the code into validator.w3.org and check it.
3. Cleared the cache, browsing history etc.
Appreciate any suggestions. Thanks so much Murray. Late yesterday afternoon, I fixed it the "hard" way by copying one of the working folders and replacing all the text from the page that wasn't displaying correctly. It seems to have fixed the issue. Thanks again for your offer to look at the code.

How to force the display to sleep, while keeping the computer running?
I'm running some compression and transcoding programs on my iMac G5 (iSight) that keeps the CPU at 100% for hours at a time. My Energy Saver prefernces is set to sleep the display after a few minutes, but never to sleep the computer or the hard disk.
Like I'd expect with such a high CPU load, my computer's screen does not go to sleep.
Is there a program or command line utility that I can run to force my screen to go to sleep, but keep the computer running?
iMac G5 17" (iSight) Mac OS X (10.4.5)To put your display only to sleep;
Go to System Preferences, click on 'energy saver', check the 'Put the display to sleep when the computer is inactive for' box, and then set the time. Note; this just puts the display to sleep, not the whole computer. Your hard disk will keep running. I find this much more convienent than putting the computer in 'full sheep'. It wakes up much quicker without some of the hassle some computers display coming up from full sleep. -
Display Random Tables in Siena
Hello. I am wanting to display random quotations. So I was thinking about creating excel tables and then displaying them...but how do we leverage the Random function? My apology for the newbie question...I am an analyst, not a programmer, but I would think
this would be easy to do.
Essentially, every time the user opens the application, a random text table is displayed.
Also, I want to have a button to refresh the quote.
Can anyone provide an example or point to an example of this happening?
Thanks,
ChrisHi Chris,
We are definitely happy to have you here! Your question is definitely welcome as Siena is not about being an analyst or programmer, but about having ideas.
Another approach for this would be to leverage the
Shuffle() function on your excel data source. Consider the following:
1) Add a horizontal 'Text Gallery', called Gallery1
This will allow you to view the quotes data you have stored in your excel data sheet. We also assume your data is in a table called "myQuotes" and therefore, the
'Items' property of this will be Shuffle(myQuotes)
2) Add a 'Label', called Label1
This will be used to display your quotes. Say you have a column called "Quote" with the "myQuotes" data set. Then we will set the
'Text' property of Label1 to First(Gallery2!AllItems)!Quote. This way every time,
Shuffle() gives us a re-ordered list of the quotes,
First() takes the first one of the top and forwards that into Label1.
3) Taking this further with a button, we will add a Button to the canvas, called
Button1
This button will be used to switch to the next or new quote. We will accomplish this via the
Refresh() function, where we call thus function on the Data Source. Now the caveat here is that, excel does not work with
Refresh() since it is a static source of data. If you used the Azure Mobile Services data source for example and we keep the same name for the table, then you could do
Refresh(myQuotes).
This will allow us refresh the source, which in turn will be shuffled into the gallery, from which we pick the first one to display in the label.
4) Now that this is all said and done. You can now hide Gallery1
from your users via selecting Gallery1 and setting its 'Visible'
property to 'false'
Hope this inspires some other ideas. -
Safari keeps randomly crashing, multiple times in a row
I'm running Safari 7.0.4 and OS X 10.9.3. I recently wiped this Mac clean and did a clean install of Mavericks. Resetted the PRAM today and still no luck. Safari seems to crash randomly and multiple times. As in it'll not load the page, then it'll open the error report" and cycle like that until it decides to load the page. I just bought my first Apple last saturday,an iMac 17".Here`s my problem, I set up the display to sleep after 5 minutes.Right after it goes to sleep, if I move the mouse the display will turn on again OK,however, once again the displays goes to sleep, if I leave it alone for a long period of time (say a couple of hours) if I move the mouse to awake the display, the display remains dark blue.I can see the cursor, but nothing else.I`ve tried pressing keys, clicking the mouse, anything to awaken the computer,to no avail.
I`ve also made sure that in preferences, the computer is "never put to sleep".I did though, checked the box that says "put the hard disk to sleep when possible",thinking that one thing did not affect the other.
Or is it?
Ultimately, I had to resort to shutting down the computer (pressing and holding the power button for 5 seconds) and the starting it up again.
My operating system is up to date,so this is not the cause of this bug.
Does anyone have the same problem?

Does turning off energy saver include never letting the display to sleep? A warning alerts me that its life might shorten... Thanks!
(I'm doing this for the recalibrating of the battery etc...)It would shorten it's life if you leave it on year 'round. For the amount of time to calibrate the battery won't hurt it.
