Dissatisfied N97/Ovi Maps owners - tell Nokia what...

I just noticed that Nokia is running an online survey about Ovi Maps:
http://europe.nokia.com/explore-services/maps
I have used the opportunity to tell them how lousy the N97 and Ovi Maps 3 combination is.  I hope that all other members of this forum who are dissatisfied will also complete the survey so that Nokia might get the message that something needs to be done!

Three things,One  maps always opens on the last location you had it opened, and finds current location once it gets a gps lock, Two if you haven't dowloaded and pre-installed maps on the phone ( the ones the application reads to navigate) with Nokia Map Loader then it will have to download them 'on the 'fly' which will use a lot of data and slow everything considerably. Last if you only just got the phone, it probably doesn't have Maps3.03 which tends to function much better. Worth checking for software updates both with the software updater on the phone OTA and with Ovi Suite on PC !
Good Luck

  • N97:Ovi Maps crashes after a few seconds

On N97 I had Ovi maps working like a breeze for some weeks now. All of a sudden I see this behaviour. Open Ovi Maps, see the main page, click on My Location the map appears a message about connecting might cost you something and the Ovi Maps disappears.
What should I do the get Ovi Maps working againg. Oh, btw Internet works just fine.

The original maps app that came with the phone will always be there (like music player or photo viewer or web browser) Maps 3.04 works fine on my N97. Best way to install is to remove (as you said you did) all Nokia/Ovi maps from Installed Applications, then download Ovi Maps 3.04 Beta from Nokia Beta Labs. Then use Nokia Maps Loader on PC to first remove old maps, followed by downloading and installing the map data for your region onto the phone (the stuff the Maps app uses to find where you are and to navigate) to avoid having to download 'on the fly', this speeds everything up and avoids data usage. Maps should then work fine ! Well it works for me !!

  • N97 Ovi maps clashing with Google maps or sports t...

I have a UK Vodafone N97, Had Ovi maps working a treat and really pleased with it.  However, I just installed google maps and then Nokia Sports tracker.  Sports tracker wouldn't "track " at all and this then stopped Ovi maps from finding a signal.
However, Google maps finds 3-5 satellites and plots very quickly so I know the GPS receiver is working fine.
I uninstalled Sports tracker and Google maps, deleted all Ovi map data and did a soft reset, then re-installed Ovi maps for the UK  ( I can not delete Ovi maps app from the phone, software V21)
I still cannot get a lock with Ovi maps but having put Google maps back on, that works fine!!
Any thoughts other than a hard reset as I have so much installed on the phone.
    Thanks,
    Martin

Google maps uses a different server, and installing it may have changed the server settings in the phone location settings. Go to Menu>Apps>Location>Positioning>Positioning Server> make sure that the server is still supl.nokia.com

  • N97 Ovi Maps on memory card

How do I install ovi maps on e: memory card not phone memory C:

One other thing you can do is to go into application manager and remove all the share location stuff that came with maps3.03 (or even try maps 3.04 beta from Nokia Beta Labs but still remove share location) this will give you a couple of meg back. And if you want to share your location use the nokia social messaging from beta labs/Ovi Store which lets you share location on posts and can be installed on E

  • Ovi Maps 3.6.688 - what's new in this version?

Hi, since today my C6-01 Ovi Store is showing an update for Ovi Maps: 3.6.688.
Does anybody know what's new in this release? I would like to know before I update my phone.
    Cheers!

Sure you got the right number / phone setting in ovi store?
Because 688 ist the ending of
    ovi_maps_installer_3_06_11wk10_b01_s60_5_0_196688.sis
which is available from ovi store for X6 since april/march and has Version 3.06(637).
    Otherwise there is
    ovi_maps_inst_3_06_11wk23_b05_tb9_2_PS2_195660.sis
for C6-01 which is 12 weeks younger but I don't know the Version because it won't work on my 5800XM.
You may contact publisher via as mentionend in ovi store to get info about changes...

Everything else installed on the phone works fine - including all the internet related software, email , facebook etc
Appreciate that others may be having same problem as we carried out same upgrades on second phone in the house last night and................Same problem

Has anyone got a solution for this issue? I had my first n97 arrive on monday, today I had to swap it as it didnt work properly. I have got to grips with my new one and upgraded things when prompted, everything seems to be working perfectly except when i got to ovi maps.
Ovi maps worked fine on the frist n97 handset but not a lot else did. on this new handset its just ovi maps with the above problem, when I go into maps it says no internet connection and propmpts me to select 'go online' i do that and get the message 'internet usage disabled'
Ive tried all of the above except the GPRS/EGDE thing as I cannot find that anywhere on the phone.

  • Ovi maps problems with Nokia 5800 xpress music

Since Ovi updated the maps I've had trouble using it. I have version 40 firmware which was installed by Vodafone when my device expired. Despite the update, Ovi maps just crashes the phone when I try to use it. The screen goes blank and I get all coloured lines flashing down one side and the phone reluctantly restarts. Any advice please?

I am having exactly the same problem with my 5800 xpress music having updated to version 40.0.005.235.10 and installed the new version of OVI maps and the software Own Voice.
I have also tried reinstalling the sotware, restoring my phone to factory settings and resetting my phone by pressing the green, red and camera button whilst powering up. The problem persists. I will be making a call and within a few seconds of the call being connected the phone switches off and back on again. I also get the the coloured lines flasing on the screen.
Please Nokia Support, help us out.

  • N97 Ovi Maps problem

    HI,
i tryed to update my maps definition by checking on Ovi Suite on my PC via USB.
Some updated maps were available, but during the update, i've lost the connection with USB.
From now, there is no "cities" folder on E: and Ovi Suite can't upload new maps.
So i have Ovi maps working but without any Maps !
It says my memory card is full, but there is 28Go available !
Any idea to recover it ?
    thanks for your help

During the update process, the old maps are deleted first before the new maps are downloaded. I have never interrupted the process but it is possible the usb connection was interrupted just as all the files were deleted. This could explain why the Cities folder and qf files are missing.
Now to get Ovi Suite to see the mass storage for map data purposes, you first need to run Maps at least once. This should recreate the Cities folder and qf file. Once this is done, Ovi Suite should be able to see it and allow you to download map data.

  • Ovi map not working in Nokia E63

I have tried to install OVI maps in my Nokia E63 phone, but it is showing as phone is not compatible for the same. Why maps is not compatible for E63 but is working for E55 or other old models. Can anyone tell me the solution so that  i can also use navigation service in my phone as i have to travel regularly?

    @meetkalsen10
    Welcome to the forum!
Are you trying to install this version?
    http://static.s2g.gate5.de/nokiamaps-client/nokia_maps_3.01_09wk44_b01_s60_3.1_lm_rom.sis
As E63 has no embedded GPS it would need Bluetooth GPS to act as navigator as network GPS is not accurate enough for this purpose.

  • N900 and Voice Navigation / New OVI Maps

s much as I love my N900 it is so frustrating to walk into a T-Mobile store here in the US and find that the simple Nokia Nuron has much newer version of Ovi Maps. While Nokia is busy launching voice navigation for the N97's and such, the N900 is left waiting in the wings. Does anyone have any news regarding when Nokia will again turn their gaze back to what is supposed to be their flagship device?

Not only does Nokia not support Ovi Map downloads on the N900...it also does not support Native Video calls and sending of photos/Video via MMS...sent a note to their support careline..and the reply below was what I received...:-(( This is NOKIA's FLAGSHIP product with 2  cameras and they do not support Video Calls....why launch a product with 2 cameras which does not do Video calls...Hope someone from NOKIA is reading this tread..don't launch products when it is NOT ready .... extreemely dissappointed...might have to consider other brands of phone for my next phone purchase.

  • Nokia, WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU????

As a long-time Nokia fan, my first smart-phone could’ve only been another Nokia, or so I thought. 5530XM with its new and innovative Symbian 6.0 is the way to the future! What a poor decision! In only two months of ownership, it’s been sent back for repairs already (screen became blank) and wasted hours after hours trying to find solutions to problems like WiFi connectivity and interface manipulation. Seeking solution by phone didn’t help either: the call center personal will speak with you only if you wait at least 30 minutes on hold and another 15 providing all the personal information they can possibly require (it’s like an interrogation!).
So here’s the latest challenge: what is the best way to update Ovi maps for my 5530XM on a  Win 7 x64 computer. In case you’re not aware, there are 5 (FIVE!!!) different applications that will supposedly help you find the way! So let’s count:
    -    Ovi suite
    -    PC suite
    -    Software updater
    -    Ovi maps downloader
    -    Ovi maps loader
WHY???? Can somebody just tell me where do I have to go to figure this out? Which one do I need and for what purpose? I already used Ovi suite and maps downloader (according to both these applications I have the latest updates), but I’m having huge difficulties browsing the map (it’s mostly empty!!) and searching for addresses (cannot find them or if I do they in the middle of empty map space!)
    Nokia, WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU????

    To answer your Maps question...
    - PC Suite doesn't help you download Maps, all it contains is a link to the Map Loader application, which has been the main application for installing map data for some years.
    - Nokia Software Update is to update the phone firmware, it has no affect on map data but may install a new version of the Maps Application if the new firmware version has a new Maps version built in.
    - Ovi Maps Updater was to install the 3.01 version of the Maps application, and in doing so deleted old map data and replace it with up to date data after dealign with the app.
    - Ovi Suite will probably eventually replace all of these other tools under one roof, but the others all still exist because not all Nokia phones are yet compatible with Ovi Suite.

    Hi JackNicklaus,
Unfortunately your device is not compatible with Maps 3.03 (with free navigation), but only with 3.01 (which you already have installed).
A full list of compatible devices with the 3.03 version can be found here :
    http://maps.nokia.com/ovi-services-and-apps/ovi-maps
What this means is that you would need to purchase a license to be able to Navigate with turn by turn instructions or to use the Premium services.
You can see the pricing structure within the Shop on the device (go to Options > Shop & Licenses)
Hope this clarifies things for you.
Although i work for Nokia, my opinions are my own!

  • OVI Maps keeps wanting to download data after upda...

I have the Nokia 5230 which I bought in July. I had also installed the OVI suite on my PC, which I used to download the full map of Malaysia and Singapore. I could happily use the GPS function without having to download large amount of data through the phone, or allow it to go online if I want to search for location. In the case where I wanted to use it offline, zooming in or out at any level allows me to see the roads and place names clearly.
A few days back while using OVI Maps, a popup came up saying a new version is available. I promptly allowed the download, but installation failed saying there "was not enough memory".
I uninstalled apps from my phone, including "Nokia Maps". After clearing up apps and getting about  40MB free memory, was I able to install the new version of OVI maps. I promptly re-downloaded the Malaysian and Singapore Maps through Ovi SUite.
Now I notice OVI Maps now download large chunks of data through my data connection during GPS usage. If I disallow online use, my GPS shows  nothing but a blank "map". If I allow going online for the first time, and not the second time, when using GPS, the same blank appears if I zoom out or zoom in. It's as if the maps are not there, so data connection is required to download them. How can this be when I have already downloaded the Malaysian / Singaporean map to my phone through OVI suite? I have set on my phone and the OVI suite for the data to be saved to my microSD card.
Please help. This is driving me up the wall.

Here's what you can try to do.
    1. Back up your phone memory.
    2. Update the phone software.
    3. Download Ovi Maps in this link : http://maps.nokia.com/services-and-apps/ovi-maps/free-downloads#/nokia-5230/
    4. Remove the "qf" and "Cities" folder on your memory card.
    5. Install the Maps Application on the newly updated phone.
    6. Once the installation is successful, run the Maps on your phone but don't go online. This will re create the two folders that you deleted in the memory card.
    7. Open Settings of the maps application then click on maps. Make sure that it will use the maximum allowable size (90%)
    8. Download the Maps data again using Ovi Suite.
Every one can correct if I'm wrong. ^_^
