DNS in a mixed OES and AD environment

I have a mixed environment where most of my DNS is handled by OES servers with our main domain and a subdomain that is handled by Active Directory. For the AD domain, my OES servers are secondaries. I think I may not have something setup quite right because I'm getting the following error in /var/log/messages on my OES (secondary) servers except for the designated secondary:
[NCPL]: Error zone not loaded occurred while getting the db for zone adzone.xxx.xxx.xxx
[NCPL]: Error zone not loaded occurred while writing info for zone adzone_xxx_xxx_xxx.DNSDHCP.XXX to /var/opt/novell/log/named/named_zones.info
The AD zone and the reverse are both owned by the same AD server and the designated secondary is getting this message. Should I *not* have all my other OES secondaries in the "Authoritative DNS servers" list for that zone?
Thanks,
Toney.

You need to tell your AD DNS to allow zone transfers. Otherwise, the OES servers will never get the zone.

  • Mixed SCCP and SIP environment on UC560

    Hi,
Is it possible to have a mixed SCCP and SIP enviroment on a UC560?
We would like to keep the current 7XXX series phones on SCCP and add a SIP conference station and door phone.
    Thanks,

    Hi Neil
Yes, this should work. As the UC560 runs CUCME, this should be fine.

  • Network users in mixed desktop and portable environment: Best Practices

    Hello,
When using Server 4.0 in a network that includes both Mac desktops and Macbook devices, what is the recommended setup for network users and their Home directories?
The environment I'm building would best be suited for a "Local Only" Home folder setup due to the frequent use of large files, such as iPhoto stores, by many users. However, how does that function with the portables? When on the network, the user has all files accessible locally, but once off site, the user is not available. I know that a user may be converted into a Mobile Account so that it is available both on and off the network. However, my understanding is that this is more suited for syncing Home folder, i.e. when the Home folder is on a network share. Will a mobile account also function this a "Local Only" Home folder setup?
Essentially, I'm using the server to manage network users, not to serve files for the Home directories.
    Thank you.

  • ZBF in a mixed ipv4 and ipv6 environment, don't touch ipv4

I have a dual stacked router for both ipv4 and ipv6. Ipv4 traffic should pass the zbf untouched due to the fact that there is another rock solid ipv4 firewall egress of the inside Interface. Is there a way that a class map like this could function on ipv6 traffic only?:
    class-map type inspect match-any fullproto

I didn't test it, but what about the following:
Configure a new class-map where you match on an ipv6 access-list "any to any"
Configure a third class map of type ""match all" where you match on your "fullproto" class-map and also the above ipv6 class-map. For this class map you configure your inspections.
For ipv4-traffic you configure a class with a "pass" action in both directions.

  • Adding a jar to the classpath of an executable jar (mixing -jar and -cp)

    Hello,
frankly I hesitated over posting this to "New to Java"; my apologies (but also, eternal gratefulness) if there is an ultra-simple answer I have overlooked...
I integrate a black-box app (I'm not supposed to have the source) that comes packaged as an executable jar (with a Manifest.MF that specifies the main class and a bunch of dependent jars), along with a few dependent jars and a startup script. Long story short, the application code supports adding jars in the classpath, but I can't find a painless way to add a jar in its "classpath".
The app's "vendor" (another department of my customer company) has a slow turnaround on support requests, so while waiting for their suggestion as to how exactly to integrate custom jars, I'm trying to find a solution at the pure Java level.
The startup script features a "just run the jar" launch line:
java -jar startup.jarI tried tweaking this line to add a custom jar in the classpath
java -cp mycustomclasses.jar -jar startup.jarBut that didn't seem to work ( NoClassDefFound at the point where the extension class is supposed to be loaded).
I tried various combination of order, -cp/-classpath, using the CLASSPATH environment variable,... and eventually gave up and devised a manual launch line, which obviously worked:
java -cp startup.jar;dependency1.jar;dependency2.jar;mycustomclasses.jar fully.qualified.name.of.StartupClassI resent this approach though, which not only makes me have to know the main class of the app, but also forces me to specify all the dependencies explicitly (the whole content of the Manifest's class-path entry).
I'm surprised there isn't another approach: really, can't I mix -jar and -cp options?
    - [url http://download.oracle.com/javase/6/docs/technotes/tools/windows/classpath.html]This document (apparently a bible on the CLASSPATH), pointed out by a repited forum member recently, does not document the -jar option.
    - the [url http://download.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/deployment/jar/run.html]Java tutorial describes how to use the -jar option, but does not mention how it could play along with -cp
Thanks in advance, and best regards,
    J.

Ahem, the "Java application launcher" page bundled with the JDK doc (http://download.oracle.com/javase/6/docs/technotes/tools/windows/java.html) specifies that +When you use [the -jar] option, the JAR file is the source of all user classes, and other user class path settings are ignored+
So this behavior is deliberate indeed... my chances diminish to find a way around other than specifying the full classpath and main class...

I would have thought that the main-class attribute of the JAR you name in the -jar option is the one that is executed. Then I still have the burden of copying that from the initial startup.jar's manifest. Slightly less annoying than copying the whole Class-path entry, but it's an impediment to integrating it as a "black-box".
The 'cascading' behavior is implicit in the specification
I know at least one regular in addition to me that would issue some irony about putting those terms together :o)
Anyway, thank you for confirming the original issue, and merci beaucoup for your handy "wrapper" trick.
I'll revisit the post markers once I've actually tried it.
    Best regards,
    Jérôme

  • MSDN and Production Environment (again)

I started this on another forum before I found this one, but this seems a more suitable place.
The definition of "production environment" seems rather odd. In some responses on this forum it appears to refer to "soft" systems whereas the latest MSDN licence refers to environment and physical kit.
Below is a conversation I had over email with someone from MSDN and I find the whole thing utterly bizarre. I cannot for the life of me see how this helps anyone apart from MS being able to charge for non-production software. It renders having a powerful desktop
for local lab experimentation pointless as you're not allowed to install anything and effectively doubles the hardware cost to small companies if they have to buy a separate server for any testing work (yes, best practice and all that, but budgets...) or pay
out for a Windows Datacenter licence.
    Question:
“If a physical machine running one or more virtual machines is used entirely for development and test, then the operating system used on the physical host system can be MSDN software. However, if the physical machine or any of the VMs hosted on that physical
system are used for other purposes, then both the operating system within the VM and the operating system for the physical host must be licensed separately.”
Is this actually saying that if I have a physical server licenced with a purchased (not MSDN) Server 2012 R2, running Hyper-V with, say, a production file server VM on it,  that ALL Windows VMs on that machine must have purchased licences even if they
are only for development & testing purposes?
Is this saying that all production and development Windows VMs must be only completely separate hardware, cluster, SAN, etc otherwise you must pay for full licences for the VMs?
Or does it just mean that the bare metal licence (plus any additional ones required for running further production VMs) must be purchased if the VMs are a mix of production and development?
    Answer:
We kindly inform that any products licensed under the developer tools model (e.g. SQL/BizTalk developer and/or MSDN) must be installed on their own separate physical hardware.
You are not allowed to run test or development products on a server where production workloads are running at the same time.  Kindly run your developer software on a device/host that is dedicated to testing and development.
    Explanation:
The Product Use Rights (PUR) say that the developer software is not licensed for use in a production environment. Even if the PUR does not have a separate definition of production environment, a production environment is a set of resources for network, physically
dedicated hardware and software to provide "live" service.  If the intent was to say that the same physical server could be used for both development and production - it would say "not licensed for use in a production OSE," instead
    it says environment.
    See current PUR, page  51:
    Developer Tools (User License)
You have the rights below for each license you acquire.
    #      You must assign each license to a single user.
    #      Each Licensed User may run an unlimited number of copies of the Developer Tools software and any prior version on any device.
    #      The Licensed User may use the software for evaluation and to design, develop, test, and demonstrate your programs. These rights include the use of the software to simulate an end user environment to diagnose issues related to your programs.
    #      The software is not licensed for use in a production environment. #      Additional rights provided in license terms included with the software are additive to these product use rights, provided that there is no conflict
with these product use rights, except for superseding use terms outlined below.
    Question:
Classifying an entire physical infrastructure as "production" in these days of virtualisation and shared storage really does not make any sense at all. Not using the software for production purposes makes perfect sense, but not being able to locate
it alongside production OS installs is mad. Does this only apply to the server running the VM (CPU and RAM)? If the VHDX is hosted on shared SAN storage does the SAN have to be dedicated to non-production storage?
    Answer:
We kindly inform that after double-checking the case we would like to confirm the development software cannot be run on the same hardware with production software.
We have also received a feedback from the responsible team regarding your request about a dedicated SAN (Storage Area Network) for MSDN software.
They have confirmed that the SAN has to be dedicated to the development and testing environment if it is used to run the software acquired through MSDN.
    Question:
OK, so if I have my desktop (which is a production environment as I use it for email and other day to day office tasks), can I turn on Hyper-V and install an MSDN Windows Server 2012 instance for development purposes?
    Answer:
We kindly inform it is not allowed to install and run software from MSDN subscriptions in production environments. Please do not install MSDN software on a desktop in a production environment:
"[.] The customer will need to run the developer software on a device/host that is dedicated to testing and development.

    Hi Mike,
It sucks that MSDN software can't be run in a production environment, that means you have to have two entirely separate hardware environments, which are costly, and it seems unnecessary.
That's essentially it. I'm not saying for one second that it should be used for production purposes, just that it's physical location shouldn't be relevant. Also, the word "environment" is a very bad choice in the documentation simply because it's very open
    to interpretation.
A production environment is defined as an environment that is accessed by end users of an application (such as an Internet Web site) and that is used for more than
    Acceptance Testing of that application
or Feedback. Some scenarios that constitute production
    environments include:
Environments that connect to a production database.
Environments that support disaster-recovery or backup for a production environment.
Environments that are used for production at least some of the time, such a server that is rotated into production during peak periods of activity.
So I dont think (here's that inconclusive language) but am not sure that your desktop machines count as production environments, based on that, unless end users are connecting to them. (I dearly hope they are not!)
My reading is based on the "Other Guidance" section:
"If a physical machine running one or more virtual machines is used entirely for development and test, then the operating system used on the physical host system can be MSDN software. However, if the physical machine or any of the VMs
hosted on that physical system are used for other purposes, then both the operating system within the VM and the operating system for the physical host must be licensed separately."
<o:p>This is the crux of the matter and the interpretation of "licensed separately". A (to my mind) sensible reading of that would be "if you're running any production purpose VMs on a server then the physical host OS must be a full licence
[presuming it's Server 2012 and not, say, VMWare or Hyper-V 2012] as must all production purpose VMs on that server". This has been getting interpreted by others (I'm not the first) and backed up by MS as meaning that if you want to run any dev/test VMs on
a server that also runs production VMs then you can't use MSDN for those dev/test VMs.</o:p>
    Also, there is a section
here, on the MSDN Licensing help page that says (with my added emphasis):
    Many
MSDN subscribers use a computer for mixed use—both design, development, testing, and demonstration of your programs (the use allowed under the MSDN subscription license) and some other use.  Using the software in any other way, such as for doing email,
playing games, or editing a document is another use and is not covered by the MSDN subscription license.
When this happens, the underlying operating system must also be licensed normally by purchasing a regular copy of Windows such as the one that came with a new OEM PC.
Now to me, it seems this might be saying that the underlying operating system on a work
machine cannot be licensed using MSDN if that work machine is going to be doing non-msdn things in addition to MSDN things.  It doesn't say "This can't happen" it just says "When this happens, the underlying
    OS must be licensed normally..."
So, based on what I'm reading it seems that this quote from you might not be true:
"We can't install a local MSDN instance of Server 2012 or 8.1 for dev and test under Hyper-V on desktops
because desktops used for email, writing documents, etc are production. "
I wouldn't have expected this to be true either, but this is the response I was given. It may well be
that my question was misunderstood. I hope this is the case otherwise one of the big reasons for turning on Hyper-V on  expensive, powerful desktops enabling the running of personal test environments goes out the window!
Thanks for your time on this.

  • 2 domain, each with 2 way transitive truts, with sub domains pointing to the same DNS server (how should forward and reserver look zone be configured)

    Hello,
I found a test environment and I just trying to understand how it works.
If I have two domains (a.com and b.com) with sub domains(a1.com and b1.com) with two way trust and I want them to point to a Windows DNS server. How should the Forward lookup zones and Reverse lookup zones be configured? In forward lookup
zones do I just add a new zone, make them all primary since only one DNS server, add a.com and b.com and do the same for reverse zones.
Do the sub domains need to be added? What about pointers? Do I add the IP address of a.com and b.com in reverse lookup zones.
A side question: When you create a Domain with dns AD intergrated the forward and reserve lookup are automatically created. You don't need to add the zone of the domain you just created but have to add zones of other domains.

Make each domain controller as a DNS server too. Reverse lookup zones & forwarders are not replicated automatically. You can create AD-Integrated reverse lookup zone & set the replication scope.
You can create AD-Integrated DNS zones in the parent/root domain, set the replication scope to the forest-wide & delegate the zones for handling request locally. Once you create AD-Integrated DNS zone & set the replication scope forest wide, all
the zones will appear automatically in each domain's DNS server.

  • How can I downgrade my Java version and Runtime Environment to 6?

Hi, thanks for reading this in advance:
I have a couple problems. Ever since Java Preferences was removed in one of Lion's updates I have been having trouble with java.
How do I downgrade my java and runtime environment to java 6?
When I go into terminal, and type java -version, this is what I get:
    java version "1.7.0_09"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_09-b05)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 23.5-b02, mixed mode)
How do I downgrade the "java version" to 6 and how do I downgrade the SE Runtime Environment to 6?
I accidentally installed 7 a couple days ago and I've been having trouble with some applications.
    Thank you so much.

Dear Minionsman and everyone who reads this. I was so happy when i downgraded and i wanted to share it to all, I have found out why it says this in terminal
    java version "1.7.0_09"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.7.0_09-b05)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 23.5-b02, mixed mode)
and why it says something different on java tester
Its because java 7 blocks every java version below it.
    How do you downgrade?
Well all you do is delete a few files
    INSTRUCTIONS BELOW
    1.Open Terminal
    2. Enter these commands
    sudo mkdir -p /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/disabled
    sudo mv /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/disabled
    sudo ln -sf /System/Library/Java/Support/Deploy.bundle/Contents/Resources/JavaPlugin2_NPAPI .plugin /Library/Internet\ Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin
    sudo ln -sf /System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Commands/javaws /usr/bin/javaws
    3.
Go to /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ and delete the JavaAppletPlugin.plugin bundle.
    4.
Go to /System/Library/Java/JavaVirtualMachines/ and delete anything whose name starts with jdk1.7.0 or says Java 7 or something similar.
    5. now go to terminal and type
    java -version
6.it should say something like this
    java version "1.6.0_35"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_35-b10-428-11M4508)
Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.10-b01-428, mixed mode)

  • Recommended DNS zone replication scope for single domain environment

Hi, in my company we have domain/forest functional level Windows Server 2008 R2 - there is only one domain. AD DS is installed on 5 servers -
AD integrated DNS zone is used.
I noticed today that on both forward lookup DNS zones, _msdcs.internaldomain.com
& internaldomain.com, zone replication scope was set to
All DNS servers in this domain and also for one reverse lookup zone. I changed this setting for all these zones to
All domain controllers in this domain but later (10-15 mins at most) I reverted these settings back to
All DNS servers in this domain.
Which zone replication scope for mentioned zones is recommended keeping in mind this is single domain environment? Also could I do any harm to DNS and AD in all when I changed zone replication scope and later reverting it back for these zones? How to check
that dns related informations (zones) are located where they should be in Active Directory and that there is no any garbage in other locations (partitions) in AD database.

    Hi,
All DNS servers in this domain : Replicates zone data to all Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008 domain controllers running the DNS Server service in the Active Directory domain. This option replicates zone data
to the DomainDNSZone partition. It is the default setting for DNS zone replication in Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008.

  • Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (DNS server) is not responding [and I'm at my wit's end!]

I originally posted this question to the community section and was advised to post it here.  Please bear with me as this will be a long post.  I'm including the scenarios involving this reoccurring issue, the trouble shooting steps I've already
taken and the results of several diagnostic tools and logs.
I have a Sony VAIOS VPCEBB33FM lap top since 2011.  I have had this issue on an off for a long time.  I'm at my wit's end.  Any new insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Scenario Details
    1)  Some times it's on and off through out the day, sometimes it won't work all day, and once in a while it will work fine for the entire day.
    2)  I've had this issue across several wireless services, Clear Network accessed with WiMax, Library Wi-fi, Comcast cable internet using wireless router and Wi-fi, and Comcast Xfinity Wi-Fi, to name a few examples.
    3)  Other devices in the household or library will work with no problems such as my smart phone or my roommates' laptops or desktop computers.
    4) Once in a while,  the built-in wireless adapter is not found and I have to reinstall the driver.  Also the diagnostic tool has had to reset my adapter on an increasing basis.
    5)  I had my hard drive replaced in December 2014 and my system restored from the System Restore disks that came with it when I bought the laptop.  Even though I've been online on an infrequent basis it worked just fine for a while. Now that
I've been online a bit more I'm having the same issues again.
Below are my attempts at trouble shooting so far but I still have not been able to consistently resolve my DNS issues
     1) Restarting my adapter
     2) Turning off my laptop and removing the power supply for 5-10 minutes before turning it back on.
     3)  Using the IP Config in Command Prompt
         ipconfig /flushdns
         ipconfig /registerdns
         ipconfig /release
         ipconfig /renew
     4) Using the NetSh reset in Command Prompt and restarting my laptop
         netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
         netsh winsock reset
         ipconfig /flushdns
         [restart laptop]
     5)  Configuring the TCP/IP in several settings
Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and then click Properties.
I have used the following settings:
           a) Obtain an DNS server address automatically
           b) OpenDNS
               208 67 222 222
               208 67 220 220
           c) Google DNS

     6) Updating the driver for my Intel Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6250 AGN and Intel Centrino(R) WIMAX 6250 from the Intel website previous having my laptop wiped clean in 2014.  It still did not resolve the issue.  My laptop
manufacturer as not come up with an driver update for my adapter since 2010.  I haven't tried to update the adapter driver from Intel's website since having my laptop repaired due to the fact that Intel strongly recommending using the manufacturer's updates
instead and frankly it didn't make much of a difference when I did it the first time.
     7) The last one I've tried as of today is going into Services and changing the start up type to automatic for the following:
Computer Browser [changed from manual to automatic]
DHCP Client [already set to automatic]
DNS Client [already set to automatic]
Network Connections [already set to automatic]
Network Location Awareness [changed from manual to automatic]
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) [already set to automatic]
           Server [already set to automatic]
TCP/IP Netbios helper [already set to automatic]
           Workstation [already set to automatic]
...and I'm still having DNS issues.
My only guessing are that my laptop came with a lemon adapter that needs to be replaced, some advanced setting(s) that I'm not aware off, or my firewall/anti-virus is interfering. I've used Symmantic Anti-virus and Firewall in the past and currently
Avast Anti-Virus with Microsoft Network Firewall.  I've had DNS issues with both anti-virus/firewall set ups.
Below are the results from the diagnostics and tests that I've ran.

  • Mixing ECC and NECC (Non-ECC) RAM Modules

    Hi,
I have a G5 Dual Core 2.0 with a pair of 512Mb Non-ECC (NECC) RAM installed and I want to upgrade to 3Gb. I'm thinking of getting 2Gb ECC modules and discarding the 1Mb NECC installed. But I came across a phrase in the Apple Manual of my G5 that states "DO NOT MIX ECC and NON-ECC Memory Modules WITHIN A PAIR." Does that mean I can mix ECC and NECC within Memory Banks and NOT within a PAIR? Because in that case I won't have to discard my NECC 1Gb and have a mixed 3Gb Memory!? I'm afraid to actually try it so I would appreciate your insights. Thanks much.
    G5 Dual Core 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Yes. You can mix ECC and nonECC as long as you don't pair the ECC with the nonECC. The computer will just treat all RAM as nonECC.
You can keep the original memory as long as the two 512MB DIMMs are always paired with each other.

  • DNS pointing to both internal and external addresses

I am currently going through the very helpful lynda.com OS X Server 10.5 videos to set up an Advanced Server from the ground up.
DNS was set up first and for the most part everything has gone for me just like Sean shows in the movies.
Our company's domain name is automaticduck.com so I have been setting up DNS records for our internal network to some of the machines, for example the Xserve I'm configuring is called duckxserve.automaticduck.com and it points to the proper internal IP address. I set up my MacBook Pro OS X Client system to use the new DNS server on duckxserve and while it works for getting around the internal network now I'm having problems connecting to outside addresses on our domain such as www.automaticduck.com and support.automaticduck.com. If I remove the internal Xserve from my client's DNS servers list I am able to get out again.
I thought I would be smart and add A NAME records to my internal DNS server with the external IP addresses, however this didn't change anything, I still couldn't get out to them.
We are NOT hosting our own web site and email etc., we have DNS set up through our web host with A NAME, C NAME and MX records for various servers that are exposed to the outside world.
My intention based on my understanding was that with the setup of this internal Xserve running DNS it would simply serve DNS records to the internal network. How can my set up my internal DNS to it does not conflict with my ability to get out to our outside public addresses?

Add your ISP DNS Addresses to the forwarders section and that should be it.
Thank you for the reply, Tony.
If I set up the forwarders section* can I just not include information about our automaticduck.com servers that are not on our internal network? It seems to me (not that I know anything about this) that if our internal DNS server does not know about www.automaticduck.com or support.automaticduck.com then requests for those addresses should get passed on to our ISP's name servers*, right?
    *68.238.128.12, 68.238.64.12
This doesn't work like I thought it would.
I have my client set up to use my new internal DNS server's IP address for a DNS server and I am able to get to the local machines defined therein (like http://wesworkg5/ ), however I cannot get to my outside sites... www.automaticduck.com or support.automaticduck.com (I can't even get to discussions.apple.com for some reason).
I can get to other outside sites that I've never been to before (so I know they have to get looked up), like whitehouse.gov or harvard.edu or almondjoy.com
The DNS log doesn't show me anything, maybe it isn't supposed to in a case like this.
Whatcha think? Thank you so much.

  • Mixing XDCAM and HDV?? Outputting to SD DVD...

    Hi
Earlier this year we shot a documentary on a Sony PDW-F350L HD XDCam (great camera, stunning footage - 35Mbps). Working in FCP has been fine.
We're doing a follow up and budget and logistics dictate that we sadly can't use 350s again (where we're going, carrying 2 Z1s for example is going to be a lot easier). We're also on a fairly steep learning curve (being relatively new to FCP, Compressor etc).
So I'm looking at options. We know that there are significant differences between say a Z1 and a 350 but from my research so far and from some relatively simple testing mixing Z1 footage (native) and 350 footage on FCP, at least editing on the timeline doesn't seem like it's going to present any problems (although thoughts on that welcome).
The issue seems to be outputting. In the first instance we'll be outputting to SD DVD. Yes, that old gem...
Searching round various forums, it seems this problem (HDV - SD) is fairly universal. Solutions seem to range from not working in Native HDV (suggestions vary on the format to ingest in - AIC etc); outputting to different formats first (eg DVCPro HD) and then to MPEG-2; outputting the timeline to tape (DV), re-importing; using some thing like a Matrox MXO to output and others...
We're aware of the shortcoming of HDV and the compressed nature of the format and our expectations, given our kit are realistic. I've even tried putting some PD150 footage on the timeline but that's just not going to cut it.
So, I've got to put a kit list together by next week and wondered if anyone had any thoughts on:
    1) Mixing XDCAM and HDV on the timeline and any gotchas we should watch out for.
    but more importantly
    2) Any suggested routes I can look at to get some reasonable output with these two formats on the timeline - particularly HDV (don't think we'll have time to look at the Matrox route right now).
Many thanks in advance for any thoughts.
    Cheers

    Thanks Andy, Michael
That's good input. From an editing point of view we seem to be ok. Although, Michael, I take your point and that's a good suggestion.
The main problem is the workflow to create a decent SD DVD without the artefacts caused by compression/motion etc in HDV (and to some extent XDCAM).
Have read the prores whitepaper at
    http://images.apple.com/finalcutstudio/resources/whitepapers/L342568A_ProResWP.pdf
And looked a little more into understanding GOP structures and it seems that ProRes will help in terms of editing.
The white paper seems to suggest that converting to ProRes, because it uses I frame–only encoding "Ensures consistent quality in every frame and no artifacts from complex motion. "
We'll try some tests but, does anyone know if this is true?
But it also seems that deinterlacing may solve some of the horrendous vertical edge rippling we're getting on the HDV footage when outputting to SD DVD - although if I'm honest I'm not sure how we achive that with our current setting.

  • How to set up DEV, TEST and PROD environment?

We have used BI publisher Enterprise (standalone), Oracle BI Publisher 10.1.3.4.1. Our admin set up DEV, TEST and PROD environment based on the folder. For example, there is DEV folder, TEST folder and PROD folder. Developer is developing reports under DEV folder. Under TEST and PROD folder, there are many sub-folder based on the login user role. Sometimes a report has to be assigned to a multiple sub-folder under PROD. So our admin create symbolic links in the Linux box which BI server is located. That way, if a report is updated, there is no need to update the report in all sub-folder.
The issue I have is we are not allowed to touch any files under TEST/PROD folder. Only admin will move the report from DEV folder to TEST/PROD folder because those links admin created might be broken. However, as a developer, we still have permission to delete/rename/copy report under those restricted folders. Yesterday one report under PROD has been renamed by a developer. And admin complains because the links he has created not working anymore. Just wonder if admin doesn't allow developers to touch the reports under those folders, is there a way to remove the write permission on those folders? Also do you think this is a good practice to set up DEV, TESDT and PROD environment? Any input will be greatly appreciated.

  • RE: Cleaning and Compression Environment Repository

    Mark,
I'm not sure what I did wrong the first time. I thought I
covered all the bases, but just to be certain, I did the
whole sequence again and now it works.
Before, I did have problems restarting the environment,
because the repository was locked. I had to kill a

it was this process that was interfering with my original
    attempts.
With this script, you offered some very usefull infor-

The script mentioned is the exact sequence of commands that should be
    used.
Did you shutdown the environment first? You cannot clean an environment
repository while the environment is online. I know that these commands
work for both NT and Unix environment managers.
