Mixing XDCAM and HDV?? Outputting to SD DVD...

Hi
Earlier this year we shot a documentary on a Sony PDW-F350L HD XDCam (great camera, stunning footage - 35Mbps). Working in FCP has been fine.
We're doing a follow up and budget and logistics dictate that we sadly can't use 350s again (where we're going, carrying 2 Z1s for example is going to be a lot easier). We're also on a fairly steep learning curve (being relatively new to FCP, Compressor etc).
So I'm looking at options. We know that there are significant differences between say a Z1 and a 350 but from my research so far and from some relatively simple testing mixing Z1 footage (native) and 350 footage on FCP, at least editing on the timeline doesn't seem like it's going to present any problems (although thoughts on that welcome).
The issue seems to be outputting. In the first instance we'll be outputting to SD DVD. Yes, that old gem...
Searching round various forums, it seems this problem (HDV - SD) is fairly universal. Solutions seem to range from not working in Native HDV (suggestions vary on the format to ingest in - AIC etc); outputting to different formats first (eg DVCPro HD) and then to MPEG-2; outputting the timeline to tape (DV), re-importing; using some thing like a Matrox MXO to output and others...
We're aware of the shortcoming of HDV and the compressed nature of the format and our expectations, given our kit are realistic. I've even tried putting some PD150 footage on the timeline but that's just not going to cut it.
So, I've got to put a kit list together by next week and wondered if anyone had any thoughts on:
1) Mixing XDCAM and HDV on the timeline and any gotchas we should watch out for.
but more importantly
2) Any suggested routes I can look at to get some reasonable output with these two formats on the timeline - particularly HDV (don't think we'll have time to look at the Matrox route right now).
Many thanks in advance for any thoughts.
Cheers

Thanks Andy, Michael
That's good input. From an editing point of view we seem to be ok. Although, Michael, I take your point and that's a good suggestion.
The main problem is the workflow to create a decent SD DVD without the artefacts caused by compression/motion etc in HDV (and to some extent XDCAM).
Have read the prores whitepaper at
http://images.apple.com/finalcutstudio/resources/whitepapers/L342568A_ProResWP.pdf
And looked a little more into understanding GOP structures and it seems that ProRes will help in terms of editing.
The white paper seems to suggest that converting to ProRes, because it uses I frame–only encoding "Ensures consistent quality in every frame and no artifacts from complex motion. "
We'll try some tests but, does anyone know if this is true?
But it also seems that deinterlacing may solve some of the horrendous vertical edge rippling we're getting on the HDV footage when outputting to SD DVD - although if I'm honest I'm not sure how we achive that with our current setting.

  • XDCAM to HDV output to HVR25U

We have been producing content with the Sony Z1U, editing natively in FCP 6x, outputting to HDV tape with the Sony HVR25U that was sent to the DVD producer for SD DVD's. Maybe not the best workflow but worked moderately well.
Recently we replaced our Z1's with a couple EX3's and an EX1 and edited XDCAM natively in FCP. That worked great, unfortunately you can't export an XDCAM sequence to the M25U. So we exported an HDV Quicktime from the XDCAM sequence and then placed that Quicktine into an HDV sequence and tried to print to tape from there. The resulting Quicktime played fine in the timeline but it kept pausing/freezing in the M25U.
To get around this problem we copied the XDCAM timeline and pasted it into an HDV sequenced and then rendered AND THEN conformed for a print to video. It worked but this process took more than five hours for a fourty minute sequence.
Anyone else experience this? Any ideas why FCP would have any trouble printing to tape an HDV Quicktime that it generated from and XDCAM sequence?
We have 2.66MGHz Mac Pro's with 5GB RAM, served by a shared file system that is running about 280MB/s per work station.
Thanks in advance for any help.

its a 40 minute sequence and from the XDCAM time line I exported an HDV 1440x1080i 60 Quicktime which took about three hours to render. I then opened a new project with an HDV sequence and tried to print to tape from there.
When that didn't work I copied all from the XDCAM sequence and pasted it into an HDV time line rendered for about 2 hours and then conformed for at least another 2 hours but it did print to tape successfully.
I would have thought that the rendered self contained HDV Quicktime would print to tape without any difficulty.
In the past I have had this problem trying to print an HDV Quicktime to tape from a firewire attached Lacie, and thought it might be a fragmentation issue. But this Quicktime was stored on our shared file system via fiber channel. So I don't think this is a bandwidth issue but I'm at a lose on this.

  • Mixing DSLR and HDV Footage

I did a short search and did not find anything. Also, I know this is a huge topic - so what I really am looking formis direction.  As the title says, I want to mix DSLR footage with HDV footage.  Whe should I start?

Just edit in HD(V) and export to whatever you want: BluRay, DVD, web.

  • Can you mix DV and HDV in the same sequence?

    Hi Everyone....
I am new to the forum, and new to FCP...yes! I joined the dark side and just got a MAC.
I am trying to learn this system, and the 500 manuals it came with are about as clear as mud.....
Can I mix 16x9 DV footage with 16x9 HDV footage? And please don't tell me I am hosed!
I have some footage right now in a sequence, but it has the red line above the sequence, indicating that it needs to render.
And actually I can't even get the high def footage alone in a sequence to work...but that is another post.
    Thanks in advance...

I think what your asking is this....the captured clip is:
    frame size: 1440x10180
    compressor: hdv 1080i60
    data rate 3.2 mb
    pixel aspect: hd 1440/1080
I changed the sequence settings to match this and it came out all kinds of funky.
Is there another way to find out what kind of high def the clip is? I have the Sony FX1 if that matters....

  • Mixing Wave and MIDI output for recording - Windows Record Control limitatio

I am using a SoundBlaster Li've! card with Magix MIDI Studio 2005. When I create a score that combines MIDI tracks with Wave tracks, I cannot record the combined audio stream using an internal recording program like Magix Audio Studio. It all sounds fine over the speakers, but I cannot record what I am hearing.
MIDI Studio and Audio Studio are not aware of each other directly - they appear to use the Windows Play Control and Record Control to set which channel should be used to provide audio to the recording program.
Unfortunately, Windows Record Control does not allow more than one channel to be used as the recording source. If I select MIDI, then Wave is deselected. If I select Wave then MIDI is deselected. I can record each separately, but I cannot sync them, since they don't send SMPTE or anything other than audio across the channel.
Is this reflecting a limitation of the sound card or is there some utility I need to use to override the Windows Record Control? Or is there some program or some hardware feature I need to make sure that the audio output from MIDI and from the Wave source are mixed down to the Wave recording channel?
I have already seen some recommendations to patch the audio out of the sound card to the line in. I am not interested in a solution such as this, since two conversions between digital and analog are bound to degrade the result significantly.
If I need a higher level sound, that's fine, just point me to the right one.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Recommended Workflow for eventual 1080p and 1080i output?

We have a show shooting on HVX-200's (at 720p60, 23.98), and also some HDV footage.
We are editing with FCP 6.0.2 on MacPros, with San Server, and Blackmagic Decklink HD Extreme cards.
We must deliver to two networks:
    1) 1080p 23.98
    2) 1080i 29.97
    (both on HDCam tape)
    Shooting/editing hasn't yet begun.
    What is our best workflow?
--Should we edit on a 23.98 or 29.97 timebase (I presume we'll need two final sequences for layoff, one at 23.98 and one at 29.97, since one is DF and the other is NDF)?
--To layoff the 1080 masters, should we create 1080 sequences and render; or can the Decklink card upconvert upon edit-to-tape? [I've already tested converting the footage to 1080 with Media Manager, and the computer can barely handle playing it]
--When mixing HD and HDV footage in a timeline, what's the solution for minimal rendering and normal-looking frame-rates?
--Will we need a Tri-Sync generator to Edit-To-Tape at 23.98 via the Decklink card? Or any other hardware we should start acquiring?
    --Other issues we should expect?
Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated from those who have been through this before.
    Many thanks!

I have tons of experience with this workflow...and I blog about most of it. Here is a post that will enlighten you on a few things:

Read more of the Sept and Oct archives for more tidbits. The Kona 3 card was a HUGE factor in this. Without it, with your Decklink, you won't be able to do what I did. You'll have to cross convert before you output.

  • I still distribute most FCP projects via DVD. No matter which MPEG2 setting I use in Compressor 4 I get an error - even Apple's default DVD setting. Has anybody successfully output an FCP X project to compressor and then out on a DVD?

Anthony, thank you very much - this works, though I thought I had tried your process previously without success. I've tried so many things who knows. I've had zero luck going with the Send to Compressor or Export Using Compressor Settings under the Share menu. I'm also finding Compressor 4 to be a real dog on my system even though I have a brand new quad core machine with 8G of RAM. Prior to receiving your post I did come up with a different work process. Using Export Movie from FCP X and then loading the result in Compressor 3 works flawlessly. Thanks again!

  • Mixing interlaced and progressive HDV footage?

Is anyone mixing interlaced and progressive footage on a FCP 5 timeline? Would you set the timeline up for progressive or interlaced settings? Would there be any loss in quality? I'm specifically wondering how well the true progressive of the JVC HD100 would combine with the "faux" progressive of the Canon A1.

I was hoping someone else would jump in with answers, because I am not familiar with either camera, and can't give you a definite answer, but I would hazard a guess that if you set both cameras to a 1/30th shutter, you would be able to mix the footage, but it would be very difficult to shoot, because it is such a slow shutter.
Other routes, would be converting the footage using compressors advanced formats conversion, and other tricks on the timeline, with removing fields and blending etc.
I think generally though, if you were going to intercut footage, you would notice it, at some level.
Some tests would help you enormously, as would renting a second camera identical to the first.
Good luck - post back with what worked and what didn't.

  • SLLOWWWW encode for HDV to SD for DVD

I am now in the 2nd day of waiting compressor2.3 encode a 2 hour program I shot & edited in HDV.  I am outputting it for a SD DVD.  The longer I watch it encode the longer the time remaining grows and slower the encode process seems to be.
When I went to bed last night it was at 48% complete only to wake up this morning and it is now at 49%.
I set the encode tabs using the apple settings for encoding a 150 minute 16:9 video.  I believe it is a 2 pass setting. I am only processing the dolby 2.0 (which has completed) and the mpeg-2 vid.
I don't recall if I chose to de-interlace the video, but now on second thought if I did that may have been stupid because I'm not sure 1080i is interlaced...
My question or concern is, is this length on compression normal?  I haven't compressed a full HDV program before.  But even my longest SD compressions were under 24 hours.  I expected this to take a while but at this rate I am worried it won't be done until next Friday and then, who knows if it will have worked and I need to get it to a client by next week.
    Thanks for your input.

FWIW, an improved FCS 2 (fcp - compressor) workflow with HDV content (I have a HVR-Z1P).
On advice from others and other forums, I do the following when working with FCP and HDV in FCS 2.
    (option A) -
    • import/ingest the footage as HDV.
    • batch convert the HDV and RENAME the footage (from CAPTURE) in to APPLE PRORES 422 codec
    • work the time line with output codec APPLE PRORES 422
    • submit sequence (s) to COMPRESSOR (works fast)
    • when finished, use MEDIA MANAGER to consolidate footage, and purge the HDV footage (if you have limited disk space)
    (option b) -
    • in FCP log the footage
    • import the offline footage using APPLE PRORES 422
    • work the project in APPLE PRORESS 422
    • submit PRORES 422 sequqnces to COMPRESSOR
    • watch cmopressor work this.
I dont have a tehnical explanation fort htis ony an optinion that for HDV to a MULTIPASS H.264 AVC transcode from FCP takes ages on this dual QUAD core (and worse on my old g5 QUAD).
Other methods you could try vary to taste.. THese are:
    • from the HDV sequqnce - expoert a QUICKTIME REFERENCE MOVIE - sometimes is quick but most of the time takes ages... then
    • set up a QMASTER VIRTUAL cluster with an instance for every two (2) cores you have on all machines in the cluster (plenty of info on this) in these forums. . On this octo, I have 4 x instances for example and one instance on each of the MBP's (unmanaged services).
    • submit thereference movie to this compressor cluster.
Others have found better experience submittimg a SELF CONTAINED QUICKTIME movie as above.
    post your results.

  • Mixing HD and DV

I happened to mix HD and DV in a AIC 1080/50 project. I saved it in 720x576 (PAL) but it came out squashed.
Can I save the project without editing it again?

Question for my students, about a short videomaking workshop in Venice.
I've rent a PANASONIC AG-HV200E HD camera, with hi-quality lighting equipment. Material edited in Final Cut Express 4.0.1 project 1280x720/25p. No great satisfaction in image quality... Medium quality camera (I thought) not real HD sensors (HD obtained by interpolation). To finish the video with e few new shots (no more university money for this) I used my "old" SD Anamorphic Pal Professional camera SONY DSR-570WE. DVCAM recording. Imported material into FCE, quality seems to be better than previous one! Good colours, good resolution. Maybe only some problems for recording interlaced material (PAL is 50i) into a progressive project.
So the question: at this point I prefer to go on using standard definition professional camera also to obtain HD output. Somebody, Tom Wolsky in particular, can say to me the best setup for FCE to obtain hi results?
At the end I need both interlaced DVD for PAL users and Bluray for public HD display or projection.
    - Do you think i could obtain best results making editing in DV-PAL anamorphic and only at the end to export it in FULL-HD (interlaced o progressive?). Or better starting with HD project (which one?) importing DV material?
Thank you to everybody expert ho wants to answer to may uncertain English question.

    hello all,
when I create captions with mixed Hebrew and English characters or numbers, the caption is displayed all mixed up.
Is there a fix for this issue ?
If not, is there a simple workaround?
    thanks,

    Hi
I hope you have upgraded to the latest captivate version 8.0.1.242. If not please follow the steps mentioned on this post Adobe Captivate Help | Adobe Captivate 8 patch. Make sure to remove layouts and preferences as mentioned in the link.
There is an issue with text in case of multi-hierarchal bullets but apart from that other things should work fine. You might just have to change some position parameters to fix the results. Can you please share the project, so that I can reproduce the issues at my end. My email address is [email protected] . You can send it via email or drop box.
Captivate responsive output works for multiple browsers. Please check the link Tech Specs - eLearning, mobile learning & Training Software | Adobe Captivate 8 for details.

  • The correct use of iMovie to edit  AVCHD footage and the output to disc

Can anyone help me by setting out the simple steps I must take to take footage from my Panasonic SD9-HDC camcorder (recording on SDHC card), edit it into moves in iMovie, and then burn it to DVD quality disk to watch on an stanfard def TV through a DVD player AND to also burn to Blueray to watch on a high def TV through a blue ray player, keepin the best quality possible for the output.
The camera can record in 1080i 25 and has a 24p option too....
Finally what is the best output option to watch my created movies on a MAC and on a PC at the highest possible quality on a full screen 22" widescreen monitor?
    Many thanks

Ok, the more I dig, the more I find. So basically, if I only have one IP, and one port (external customers behind fw's that only use well-known ports(well-known to them!)) I will need a more generic cert. I can't list multiple servers in the proxy list with the same port, so the rsacert/key that matches the inbound port/content rule - must be usable by all the servers, right?
Or is there another way to have all URLs
    https://www.acme.com/timesheet
    https://www.acme.com/mail
    https://www.acme.com/pinkslips
all come in on port 443 and still have three unique certs?

  • Only DV and HDV in Capture Format list!

    I've
watched some of the tutorials showing a LONG list of available capture formats, when set
ting up a project- Why does my purchased
DL only show DV and HDV as my only two choices?

Why doesn't this capture list show up when setting up a project?
Are you reading what we're writing here? The marketing literature you're referring to makes a canonical mistake in its reference to "capturing" formats like RED, Sony XDCAM, XDCAM EX, XDCAM HD, Panasonic P2, or AVCHD. Those are all tapeless formats that are imported or ingested, NOT captured. Therefore, the capture format doesn't make one bit of difference when editing those formats. Just import the files and be done with it.
Definitely read the whole help file, but focus particularly on this section: Importing, transferring, capturing, and digitizing

  • DVCPRO HD 720pN24 and HDV 1080i60

Can you cut with DVCPRO HD 720pN24 and HDV 1080i60 in the same sequence of FCP? If so, how do I do this?

    Open Format Timeline Feature
In Final Cut Pro 6, you can freely mix clips with different formats in a single sequence and play back the sequence in real time.
This allows you to combine formats such as standard definition (SD) and high definition (HD) video, full-resolution and offline-quality video, and video with mixed frame rates, field dominance, and scanning methods (interlaced and progressive).
Might want to peek at that manual.
