You cannot extend wifi from a different brand router..
Only apple to apple.
But the apple router does not have to be the main router.. it can be in bridge.. as long as it is creating a wireless network it will work fine.

Good day everyone. I recently upgraded my airport extreme network by replacing the base station with a time capsule router. Since I now have an "extra" airport extreme router, I've set it up on the other side of the house to both extend the wireless range as well as use it's LAN ports for a home theater system in that location. All devices are operating well for wireless and as a review, the modem is connected to the time capsule WAN which is connected to the airport extreme via ethernet cable via LAN to it's WAN port. With both base stations interconnected by Ethernet you have the basis for a "roaming" type network. If properly configured, both base stations' Ethernet ports would be enabled for wired clients.
The key configuration items for a roaming network are as follows:
All base stations used must be interconnected by Ethernet.
The "main" base station; the one connected to the Internet modem, must be configured to provide both NAT & DHCP services; all other base stations used must be configured as bridges (NAT & DHCP disabled.)
Each base station must have a unique base station name.
Each base station must use the same wireless security type and password. -

If you're extending your network wirelessly with another device (extreme, express, etc) it can CUT your performance by up to half. You really should find a way to run an ETH cord down to your basement and extend the network via a wired connection. -
nas on airport extreme not recognized by time machine. same nas was previously used as time machine backup on different airport extreme. are there any configuration files that i can delete to fix this problem ?
Time Machine has been working just fine, but in the last week or two it has given up the ghost. I reset the connections to the drive, and it will basically save a few bytes of data and then hang.
Although Apple originally announced, prior to the release of the first 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Stations (AEBSn), that it would support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks, they removed that option before they did finally release the base station for sale.
Since then, Apple has posted (as you have noted) that they DO NOT support Time Machine backups to AirPort Disks. As far as I know, they have not changed from that position and those who do these backups find that they become corrupted over time. Sorry, but it sounds like you just confirmed that for yourself.

No. Again, this feature has never been supported by Apple for every generation of AEBSn released.

If your data backups are critical to you, then you will want to use a different solution for your Time Machine backup destination drive strategy. I would suggest that you connect your WD My Book directly to your Mac in the mean time.
Your other options would be to either use a Time Capsule (which interestingly does support TM backups to AirPort Disks) or a non-Apple solution like the Drobo FS or HP MediaSmart server. -

In most cable systems, the router you have will plug into your modem and just work automatically. A NAT (Network Address Translation) router takes your external IP and hands out LAN (Local Area Network) based IPs. All of the devices you are working with right now should handle the change automatically unless you've changed from the default automatic configuration.
The problem with your wireless end of this is that the iPhone is not yet 802.11n, only 802.11g. Because that router is not dual band, all of your wifi devices will be forced to slow down to 802.11g speeds. This won't matter much for each device that's connecting to the internet, as your bottleneck is still going to be there. Where you will see slowdowns is device to device connections, like transferring data between the devices. -

How do I Set up airport extreme with existing fios wireles network
Hello al, l I have an existing wireless network with an arcitonic wireless router provider with my fios tv. Everything is working well. Now I want to add airport extreme to increase my network range and later add apple tv /net flicks I,m not great with this stuff. Some wold be great.
You will need to establish a permanent Ethernet cable connection from one of the LAN <-> ports on the Fios router to the WAN port (circle of dots icon) on the AirPort Extreme and then configure the AriPort Extreme to "Create a wireless network".
You can configure the AirPort Extreme to provide another separate wireless network if you wish, or if you assign the same wireless network name, and use the same security setting and password that the Fios is using, the Extreme will provide more wireless coverage....and you won't have to change wireless networks to connect to the wireless on the Extreme.
Follow the guided setup using AirPort Utility to "create a wireless network". The setup will suggest that you configure the AirPort Extreme in Bridge Mode, which would be the correct setting when used with the Fios router. -
Trying to set up to print with MacBook Pro, OSX 10.5.8, Canon MX870 series printer, and NEW AirPort Extreme. I get the message that "an error occurred while reading the confirguration (-6753)" At wit's end... tried using ethernet cable connection- MacBook Pro to Airport Extreme... same message. This sounds as if you have an older AirPort Express that is no longer supported by the newer Mavericks operating system.
To check and see if that might be the case, locate the model number on the side of the AirPort Express. It will start with an "A" followed by four numbers. Hard to see in the faint print.....so you may need reading glasses or a magnifying class to see the model number clearly.
Model numbers A1084 and A1088 of the AirPort Express are no longer supported by AirPort Utility in Mavericks.
You will need to use a Mac running Leopard, Snow Leopard, or a PC to be able to administer the older AirPort Express. -
I am getting a "connection timeout" message when trying to access my Airport Extreme with various laptops, Play Station 3 and Wii. My Airport Extreme is about a month old; it was working fine until about a week ago. Suddenly, the "timeout" is not allowing me to connect to my wireless network.
It could be that there's a new source of interference.

Hello, I have a Macbook pro which runs under 10.5.8. I want to use a PC interface. I've been told I need to purchase paralell Destop 6, Windows licence and Microsoft Office 2008 for PC. Is that correct ?
If you have a MacBook Pro with 10.5, that's usually a machine that's getting long in the tooth and thus running Windows as a virtual machine (one OS inside another) will likely be slow.
Also spending all that money for Windows (VirtualBox is free) and Office seems like almost a waste of effort if the machine is going to die suddenly.
MacBook Pro's last about 4-5 years.
To do what you want your going to have to upgrade OS X to 10.6, then either buy VMFusion or Parallels which they are now catering to 10.7 and 10.8 users, so it's slow on 10.6, or use the free VirtualBox which will run well on 10.6. Then buy a copy of Windows 7 as earlier Windows versions are not being sold, then Office 11 or whatever.
You can also install OfficeMac into 10.6, if they still sell a copy.
You see your outdated really, and anything that can work is soon to be ignored etc.
What I would consider doing instead, since your not a OS upgrade type of person (we are on 10.8 now which won't run on your machine or be extremely slow) is to buy yourself a decent Windows 7 laptop and install Office into that. Some have the demo already inside and all you have to do is activate it.
This way you get your Windows experience and Office experience, don't have to fiddle with complicated virtual machine software, or Apple's problematic Bootcamp etc as Apple really is leaving 10.5 and 10.6 users behind, and by next summer will be leaving 10.7 users behind too.
Windows 7 laptop will be the cheapest and least stressful option for you, you can continue to use the Mac until it drops dead of course.
I say this because your on 10.5, your like most computer users, just a computer user and not a geek.
You obviously have some reason you need Office, likely for a job or school and since 99% use Windows and Office, then that's what you should be using.
If your only needing Office or Office like program for something temporary, then I suggest you install the free LibreOffice into OS X, however I don't know if it will run in 10.5, you might have to upgrade to 10.6 via the 10.6.3 white retail disk, however Apple doesn't sell it anymore, but perhaps Amazon or elsewhere does.
Sorry, you have been out of the upgrade loop for quite some time, so a new machine is in order as that one is about to die soon, so I wouldn't be spending too much on it really.
If you have a fat wallet you can buy a new Mac with 10.8, and have Windows 7 installed in BootCamp (direct boot) and also into VMFusion or Parallels (copies the Bootcamp Windows so you can use both) and Office for you. It will come all set up, enter your password and use the machine.
I think OtherWorld Computing will sell you a pre-configured Mac all set up like that for you, Apple won't do it though.
You can also pay a local PC/Mac specialist to do the same.
Don't forget setting up a backup system for both Windows and OS X, add anti-malware software in Windows, you'll need that.
IMO a new Windows 7 laptop would be the cheaper, less stressful option, Learning Bootcamp and virtual machine software can be a pain if your not computer savvy, al;so Apple has a nasty habit of upgrading the operating system constantly, now on a annual basis. You don't upgrade and all your third party software, then your denied security updates in short order. Windows 7 laptop will last a decade on the same version, only needing simple updates, not upgrades.
If you want your Windows machine to last even longer, like a decade, then get a desktop tower instead of a laptop.
Mac's are for those who can handle a lot of change, as Apple is about always inflicting change. It's costly change too.

OK, then you can just set up Back to my Mac on your AirPort Extreme. Then, in the "Shared" area of the Finder, your AirPort Extreme will automagically appear, even when you aren't on your own network.

I have a Westell Versalink 327 W combination DSL Modem and Wireless Router downstairs hooked up to an iMac via ethernet cable. Can I use the AirPort Express as a WiFi Range Extender upstairs? Any issues I should be aware of?
I suggest that you check with DLink on this as using the same manufacturer will always give you the best chance at compatibility.
