Do i need to keep my iMovie project and event once i upload the final movie to you tube?

hello there and i hope this is an easy answer for everyone.
i enjoy making and uploading short content to you tube but iconstantly' battle with memory.
if i could upload my finished movie and remove the event footage, i could even maybe burn a dvd copy of the finished piece, my ability to make future pieces would be restored once i finish the movie.
i have never wanted to edit something once it is finished so i would think i could get rid of the footage.
sometimes i believe data is lost if you remove pieces or where they were stored.
i don't want to loose any of the content that i have generated to you tube tho.
any help or suggestions would be great...have a wonderful iday'
looking forward to some good news for my memory.
smile face

i am sure that your are correct that my issue is hard drive space.
i suppose my question remains tho.
let me try to express my concern.
can i copy all of the imovie events and projects from my "home" movie folders to an external drive and still have the finished content on you tube?
i would like to keep the content on you tube while regaining my computer's speed.
sorry that i am not more cyberhip'.
thanks for the help so far...

  • I want to move imovie projects and events to an external hard drive.  Where is the "move" command?

I want to move completed imovie projects and events to my external hard drive.  I see in the "help" section that I should "move project & event" and they indicate that their should be such a selection.  I highlight the project I want to move and attempt to drag it to my external HD but it won't stay.  I never see "move project & event".  I've tried holding the "command" key down while dragging and that doesn't work either.  Help ...

    Hi
    Moving Event's and Project's
Connection - Either connect one Mac in Target mode to the other via FireWire. Or use an external hard disk !
(Target-Mode - Start one Mac e.g. laptop - BUT keep T-key down during full up-start - Now a FW-symbol is jumping around the screen and it will work as an external hard disk when connected to the other Mac)
    A. The External Hard Disk - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work for Video. UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange works for most other things but not for Video whatever program is used (iMovie or FinalCut)
    B. Should be a FireWire one as USB/USB2 performs badly to me and especially when filling up
    C. Do never Move or Alter any folder named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Project's
on DeskTop/Finder - as this will result in iMovie losing connections to them and repair can be anything from hard to impossibly
    D. Moving and Copying must be done within iMovie application and Events to Events - and - Project's to Project's.
    E. Moving Project's to Event's - Do not work for me - I have to export project as a QuickTime movie then Import this into Events.
Event's window can show two faces
    Like this
    or like this
from one hard disk Event - You can move it to the other hard disk
You can not (at least not me) move Event to Project or other way around only
Event to Event and Project to Project

  • How do I transfer imovie projects and events to new mac from external hard drive

bought a  macbook pro retina.  backed up 3yr old macbook pro to external hard drive.  how do I transfer imovie projects and events to new mac?  thanks!

    Hi dalbatross,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
Did you set up your new computer by creating a Time Machine backup and restoring from it?
If so, the Events and Projects that were on your internal Macintosh HD would copied to your new computer.
Here is another way to copy the events & projects to the new computer from the external drive:
iMovie Help: Work with multiple libraries
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/mac/10.0/#mov3fa25bae7
Copy or move projects, events, or clips between libraries or hard disks
Connect a hard disk that contains the target library to your computer, or copy the target library to your computer.
Choose File > Open Library, and choose an option from the submenu. You can choose from recently opened libraries at the top of the submenu, locate an existing library on your computer, or create a new library.
The selected library is opened in the Libraries list, with the first event selected and its contents displayed in the browser.
In the Libraries list, select the event that contains the item you want to move or copy.
In the browser, select the item you want to move or copy.Note:  To select multiple items, hold down the Command key as you click the items you want to select, or drag a selection rectangle around the items.
    Do one of the following:
To move items between events or libraries: Drag the clip or project to another event or library.
To copy items between events or libraries: Option-drag the clip or project to another event or library by first starting to drag and then holding down the Option key as you drag.
    Cheers,

  • How to find my iMovie projects and events since updating??????

i updated my macbook pro retina to osx mavericks then my iMovie to the newer version. I now can't find or use my pervious projects or events and I've spent days hrs on some of them. I stored and use most of my projects/events on my external hd. its hooked up. can someone who knows how this works walk me through how to get my imovie projects and events linked from my external hd to this new imovie version that for some reason cant link them like the pervious.
I hate when something work and then it gets updated and it doesnt work the same... frustrating.

okay, do a search for iMovie cache or iMovie thumbnails, and you'll probably find them. Unless you choose reject clips and then move rejected clips to the trash, then check the cache or thumbnails, your clips won't be truly gone.  Just deleting them from the windows doesn't quite work.  Sorry I can't remember the technical name for 'em, just going by my experience.  Also, try deleting your project, and throwing that rascal in the trash, then start again. Usually it's becuz you chose copy the original rather than move it (to be on the safe side), like I did......
    anyways, thanks for writin'

  • FCPX freezes when I try to update projects and events I created in the trial version.

I just purchased FCPX after my month trial was expired.  When I open the full version, it promts me to update my projects and events, but as soon as I click ok, it freezes. I have to force quit.
I can open Final Cut if I ignore the update, but I need to open my work from the trial.
Is there a way to update them from within final cut? I tried just opening the projects from finder with final cut but that won't work either.

Try trashing the preferences with this

  • I updated FCPX to 10.9 after I had updated my os to 10.9.1. And the result is that FCPx can no longer read LaCie external hard drive where all the projects and events are stored. The program simply crashes every time I try to read anything from the LaCie.

Could anyone tell me what to do to solve the problem. I updated FCPX to 10.9 and the program keeps on crash every time I try to read files stored in my LaCie hard drive. And the program also keeps on crash every time I try to import files from my SDXC cards.

I have solved the problem. Once the update is done, you need to launch FCPX, and go to File, then "update all events and projects". It will solve the problem and everything works fine.

  • Can I use Xsan or metasan to collaborate iMovie projects and events?

If we put all our iMovie eggs in one basket (external raid via Xserve, will Xsan or other San management let us share and collaborate on these iMovie files? I've noticed the sun iMovie opens it scans and lists all the available events and sometimes re-processes them (quick). What happens when two users are accessing the same library (not necessarily the same project/event) will the process cause file corruption? Any way to get around this? We waste a lot of time moving events from one workstation to another.

I think a SAN would help you out. Working on shared projects is what it does.

  • Deleted iMovie Projects and Events, still no free room on hard drive

I've moved (not copied) my iMovie files to an external hard drive, emptied trash, and rebooted but this has still not made a difference on my hard drive. My movies are showing up as the majority of space. Any thoughts? I have a MacBook Pro and I'm working with iMovie '11, OS X, and Mountain Lion. Is there somewhere else they would be stored? When I moved the files, I did it within iMovie. I'm somewhat new to Macs and thought I knew how to do most of the basic things, yet I can't figure out where these files are!
    Thanks for any help!!

Hi Brandon, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
It is not recommended to back up/save other data to a TM partition, but I've done it (and still do it), and I know others have too. ymmv
Whether or not iMovie will be able to access it from an external source, I do not know for sure, but I believe so. I'd recommend either trying a small test file or posting in the iMovie forum. Good luck.

  • I need iMovie help.  I can't publish the final movie.  I tells me that there is an error in the user parameter list.  Any help would be welcome.  It has video, audio and music.

I am using a OSX10.7.4.  I should have enough memory.  Thanks.

You are on Windows 2000, you do not have a "Firefox" button, and should consider yourself to be fortunate in that you still have menus and don't have to do anything to get the menus back instead of the "Firefox" button. (The same applies to Windows XP users).
Use the "File" menu to get to Import. You are not on Windows 7 or Vista, and don't have to put up with the nonsense added for Aero.
If you want the "Firefox" button you can get it with View -> toolbars -> (uncheck) Menu Bar. The menu bar and the "Firefox" button were supposed to be mutually exclusive (which is impossible in some cases without being incompatible).
Once you are using the "Firefox" button ...
Use the "Alt" key to view the menu bar (temporarily) containing File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks, Tools, and Help. On Windows 7 and Vista, the menu bar was hidden by default in Firefox 4 and above. These menu items are more or less available under the "Firefox" button which has the most used of the built-in Firefox menu items available in a different format.
To get back to having menus again. "Firefox" button -> Options (second column) -> (check) Menu Bar
You can make '''Firefox 7.0.1''' look like Firefox 3.6.*, see numbered '''items 1-10''' in the following topic [http://dmcritchie.mvps.org/firefox/firefox-problems.htm#fx4interface Fix Firefox 4.0 toolbar user interface, problems (Make Firefox 4.0 thru 8.0, look like 3.6)]. • Disk appears twice in Project and Event window

There seems to be a bug in iMovie that causes the default disk to appear twice in the project and event viewer if you have a symbolic link in the path.
For years I have used a symlink to allow me to locate my Users area onto a second drive. This keeps all my user data separate from the more generic system data. Occasionally an application gets confused by this link and this seems to be the case with iMovie.
I think what is happening is that iMovie is trying to list my home directory which by default is usually on Macintosh HD/Users/louie but when it hits the symlink at /Users -> /Volumes/DataDisk/Users it sees this is actually on drive DataDisk. Then I think it looks for all mounted volumes and it finds DataDisk again and doesn't realize that this is already recorded and includes it again.
Other than this odity it seems to work just fine. If I add a project or event, initially it appears in only one of the DataDisk entries in iMovie. Then if I restart iMovie the new project and/or event will show under both entries. The actual project and events are correcty created in my ~/Movies directory.
    -louie

I don't know an easy way to fix that if you are using a symlink.
Click on this link for some good information about how to set up your home folder in a different location. You can set it up on OSX where you will not need a symlink. On the other hand, if its working well for you, may be best to leave it alone.

  • HT5958 The latest update has already caused problems, Final Cut can't find my old projects and events to update. Can anyone offer any advise?

On update Final cut updated some of my projects and events bringing them into the new interface. I had older projects that I didn't want visible before the update in folders labled 'Final Cut Events (Hidden)'. The update couldn't see these and since I can't find a way of bringing them into Final cut 10.1.
Every attempt ends with a message indicating that no projects can be found.
    Any advise welcome.

Move them out of there and put them in the correct FCP project folder structure.

  • Once I finish an iMovie project and I publish it to various destinations (Dropbox iTunes YouTube etc) do I need to keep the original raw video on my MacBook or can I archive it to an external hard drive.

I have now finished 3 iMovie projects and have learned how to prepare them for sharing through various media like Dropbox, iDVD YouTube iTunes etc. but I now have produced a huge number of related files which are filling up my hard drive to the point that I can't import any further raw video until I archive or delete many of these files.
What files do I need to keep on my MacBook in order to be able to keep these various shared locations functioning, and what should I delete or archive?

iMovie works best with uncompressed audio. If your track is MP3 or AAC, you may get better results by converting your track to the AIFF format and then using that in iMovie.
You can do this in iTunes. Go to iTunes/Preferences and click the General button. On the General page, click the Import Settings button. Choose IMPORT USING: AIFF ENCODER.
(note: remember what you changed it from so you can change it back later, before you import another CD)
Now, in iTunes, select your track. Then click FILE/CREATE NEW VERSION/AIFF VERSION.

  • Can i export an Imovie project with special effects as a quick time movie then import into final cut express keeping the special effects?

Hi, Can i export an Imovie project with special effects as a quick time movie then import into final cut express keeping the special effects?

Absolutely.  Go to File->Export->QuickTime Movie (do NOT use QuickTime Conversion).  Make sure you check the Self-Contained box.  The export will be an exact copy of your Sequence, complete with any filters or other effects you've added.  Import the self-contained movie back into the project (or another project) if needed.

SO I KEEP TRYING TO FINALIZE IMOVIE PROJECT AND... NOT FINALIZE BECAUSE NOT ENOUGH ROOM IN HEAP ZONE?

The experts at a store told me that this usually is a problem of not having enough memory available for the system to finalize the project.  I moved some movies to a hard drive, but still haven't been able to solve the problem.

  • My imovie seems to have completely crashed... and I'm hoping someone can help me. I have moved all my projects and events to a folder on my desktop. I've deleted all the plist files I can find and I still cannot get it to open.

Please help... it seems all is lost as all I kind find on this subject seem to lead to nowhere. My engagement was on imovie, a school project, several videos of our son. You will have to hold my hand through this process... as I am not very good at this type of thing. I believe I have deleted all the necessary plist files and moved my projects and events to a folder on my desktop. imovie has been upgraded to version 9.0.9... Whenever I open it I just get the beachball and then I have to force quit and I get the following report:

    Hi
Yes this can be many things - and I can only guess/suggest.
    A. a very common origin to make the Mac un-happy is to - PANIC-HALT - when the round multicolored thing appear.
So much can go wrong by doing this - and if done often problem builds up that can result in a real disaster.
    B. NEVER - move or alter any folder named - iMovie Event's resp. iMovie Project's - as iMovie has no search function - moving them results in that iMovie get's 100% lost.
One can move them - but this HAS TO BE done within the iMovie application (as it is up and running)
    C. preference files - there are TWO or more Libraries on Your Mac. First and easy to find is the one You see when opening Your Start-Up Hard Disk window = Root Library == the WRONG ONE
What we need to find is the one in Your User-Account folder (icon as a house) - and this is in Mac OS X.7, X.8 and X.9 HIDDEN. To see it do:
( It can be done like this: Open Terminal, then enter:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
Press return, then restart, and it will always be visible until the next major update, when you do the same thing again. )
    or - do like this.
On the Finder window at the top left of the screen,
Hold down the Option key and clicked on Go.
This allowed You to see the Library folder and select it.
Then keep the Option button pressed down in order to see and select the Library folder.
Once found it, You are able to navigate to the iMovie preferences file and move it to the trash.  iMovie then start’s up fine!
Now here in Your User Library - find Preferences and trash
    com.apple.iMovie.plist
    com.apple.iMovie3.plist
    com.apple.iMovie7.plist
    com.apple.iMovie8.plist
    com.apple.iMovie9.plist
    com.apple.iMovieApp.plist
    and find
    com.apple.iApps.plist
While iMovie is NOT RUNNING - move this/these file/s out on to desk-top.
    Now restart iMovie.
I Prefere another way to find out if this is the problem.
(after all folders (iMovie Event/Projects are moved into original place)
    • go up to Apple Menu
    • Down to System Pref's
    • Select Accounts - Create a new User
    • Go down the Apple menu - Log OUT
    • Log into as the new User
    Now try iMovie
Does it work at all ? (Yes You don't see Events or Projects in Your original Account just now)
If so - Then we know that there is a corrupted pref file to be trashed.
Else - the problem are much more severe.
    D. After Panic Halt / Forced Quit - I always do -. to keep disasters on arms length.
    • Repair Permissions (Apple Disk Util tool)
    • Start from other HD or DVD - then run Repair Hard Disk (Apple Disk Util tool)
