Does all voting disks in n node rac have same data

Hi,
I heard that Oracle/css access more than half of the voting disks, just had a question on that
1) Why does Oracle access more than half of the voting disks?
2) Why we keep odd number of voting disks?
3) Does Oracle keep same information in all the voting disks ? is it like control or redofile multiplexing?
4) Why we have only 2 ocr and not more than that?

Hi,
1) Why does Oracle access more than half of the voting disks?
To join the cluster greater than half number of voting disks must be accessible for the cluster node, Oracle made this restriction so that even in worst cases all nodes must have access on one common disk. Let's try to understand with simple classical example of two node cluster node1 and node2 with two voting disk vote1 and vote2 and assuming vote1 is accessible for node1 only and vote2 is accessible for node2 only, in this case if Oracle allow the node to join the cluster by passing this restriction then conflict will occur as both the node writing information to different voting disk but with this restriction Oracke make sure that one disk must be commonly accessible for all the nodes. For example in case of three voting disk at least two must be accessible, if two voting disks are accessible then one disk will be commonly accessible for all the nodes.
2) Why we keep odd number of voting disks?
I already answered this question indirectly with the answer of your first question. Greater than half number of voting disks must be accessible so either you configure three or next even number i.e. four but number of failover voting disk remains same. In case of three failure of one voting disk can be tolerated and same in case of four voting disks.
3) Does Oracle keep same information in all the voting disks ? is it like control or redofile multiplexing?
Yes, Clusterware maintains same information in all voting disks its just the multiplex copy.
4) Why we have only 2 ocr and not more than that?
We can configure upto five mirror OCR disk. Here is excrept of my ocr.loc file
[root@host01 ~]# cat /etc/oracle/ocr.loc
#Device/file getting replaced by device /dev/sdb13

I want to upgrade iOS from 5 to 6, but when I go to synch everything in preparation, it tells me I will lose all my stuff on the iPhone and iPad which is/are  unique.  How can I backup or do a "real synch" (both sides have same data at end of process) and then upgrade?

You should really read the manual.
"How do you restore from backup? "
Restore.  When given the choice, choose to use backup.
"And how can I check to see if the pics and videos are on my computer somewhere first??"
They would only be where you put them.  What program did you use to import them?  Pics/vids taken with ipod are not part of the sync process at all.  You should be importing them just as you would with any digital camera.
If you did not import them, then they are not on your computer.

  • Why does PSE 10 Organizer jumble up photos on the same date from different locations ?

I have PSE 10 installed on a PC with Windows 7. My camera is a Nikon D90 using a Sandisk 8 gb SD card. When I take photos at different locations on the same date and download them into the Organizer , instead of keeping the photos from the different locations together by location, it jumbles them all up. It does not keep them in order by time taken from first to last for that day , it just mixes them all up in random order. Why ?

    Hi Lyndy,
When you use Albums and Keyword Tags, you aren't moving the images around (they stay in their folders) - you just look at them differently.
What you can try is this:-
    1) select one of your folders in folder view so that it displays all of those images in filename order
    2) click on the instant album button (to the top right of the thumbnails)
This will generate an album with the same name as the folder
    3) Now switch to Thumbnail view
    4) click on the new albumb name on the right side
Now, all the images should be in date/time order - you may have adjust the options
The real power of the Keywrd Tags is the many different ways you can look at the images.
If you have a Keyword Tag structure like this:-
    Places
         Scotland
                Holyrood
                Britania
Then if you assign the Holyrood and britania tags to the appropiate photos, there are various ways of viewing the photos.
Selecting just Holyrood would show only the Holyrood ones
Selecting Scotland would show both Holyrood and Britania ones.
The only limit seems to be your own imagination
I hope that gives you ideas rather than adding confusion
    Brian

  • Creating voting disk - RAC hp-ux v3

    Hi,
Is there a document about creating mirrored voting disks on HP-UX v3?
    Thanks,
    B

    Salut Marc
I can confirm that the command given (crsctl add css votedisk path) works quite well. but sometimes you can get the following Bug 4898020 ADDING VOTING DISK ONLINE CRASH THE CRS. This should be fixed in the 10.2.0.4 patchset
Brian please any command which just needs to query information can be run using oracle user. But anything which alters Oracle Clusterware requires root privileges.
Note: Shutdown the Oracle Clusterware (crsctl stop crs as root) on all nodes
before making any modification to the voting disk. Determine the current
    voting disk location using:
    crsctl query css votedisk
Take a backup of all voting disk:
    dd if=voting_disk_name of=backup_file_name
Note: Use UNIX man pages for additional information on the dd command.
The following can be used to restore the voting disk from the backup file
    created.
    dd if=backup_file_name of=voting_disk_name
    1. To add a Voting Disk, provide the full path including file name.:
crsctl add votedisk css <RAW_LOCATION> -force
    2. To delete a Voting Disk, provide the full path including file name.:
crsctl delete votedisk css <RAW_LOCATION> -force
    3. To move a Voting Disk, provide the full path including file name.:
crsctl delete votedisk css <OLD_LOCATION> –force
crsctl add votedisk css <NEW_LOCATION> –force
After modifying the voting disk, start the Oracle Clusterware stack on all
    nodes
    crsctl start crs
Verify the voting disk location using
    crsctl query css votedisk

  • 2 out of 3 voting disk gets corrupted

    O/S - Oracle Linux
    DB Version - Oracle 11.2.0,3
    Three node RAC
Voting disks is 3 in Normal redundancy out of which 2 disks gets corrupted.
I know the process of recovering the voting disk but I am not able to stop the cluster services and start the same in exclusive mode. I am always getting "Unable to communicate with CRS services" . I rebotted 3 nodes but the same issue persists.
    Any advice will be appreciated.

Is ASM used for OCR and voting disk storage?
This is the recommendation and the default - creating a normal redundancy diskgroup with an additional quorum disk (i.e. 3 disks in total).
There is an automated backup of the OCR. No backup needed for voting files. So it is not a disaster loosing the cluster's OCR and/or voting disks.
Assuming ASM and a diskgroup is used.
    Anything else on the diskgroup?
I recently had a similar problem. I used the diskgroup only for OCR and voting disks. Lost 2 disks. I shutdown the RAC. Started CRS in exclusive mode on 1 node. Launched sqlplus and dropped the diskgroup and recreated it with 3 disks (and a quorum). Restored the OCR backup. Confirmed the voting disks config (no need to change it as the underlying diskgroup did not have a name change).  Restarted that node. Forced a rebalance of the diskgroup. Then started the remaining cluster nodes.
There are Oracle Support Notes that describe these steps in detail. It should be relatively easy finding the note for fixing a 11gr2 RAC's OCR/voting ASM diskgroup.
If you have database data on it too - problems. If the remaining working disk is the quorum disk, then both mirror disks are toast. If not, you can try to force the disks online again - assuming disks are okay and broken path was fixed. Else add 2 new disks to replace the 2 broken disks and rebalance. Never done this myself though with a quorum disk..

  • Backing up Voting Disk

Does the clusterware need to be down when backing up the voting disk?

    Hi,
The RAC is designed for high availability. No, backup of voting disks can be done online with dd unix command
    dd if=/u01/u01/crs_files/voting1.dbf of=/tmp/VotingDisk_001.bkp
And OCR can be backuped with
    ocrconfig -export /tmp/OCR_001.bkp -s online

suddenly the drive of voting_disk_file2 file has failed.
now i have to recover the voting_disk_file2.which method do i need to follow?
    1)dd if=voting_disk2_bkp of=voting_disk_name

    2)crsctl add css votedisk <path>
and why should we take individual backup of votking disks?
is these three voting disks are not equal?

Also be aware that in 10g theres a bug; Some of the the docs and books say that you can do "crsctl add css votedisk " with the "-force" option to add a voting disk with the cluster up. This can cause corruption - see Note:390880.1

i am setting up a 2 node , 2 site cluster with no shared disks. on each node I have a C, D and E drive.
file share witness is setup on a 3rd site as a share.
when i go to failover cluster administrator, I see that cluster disk 1 and 2 are failed. any idea why?

    Hi,
From your description “2 site cluster with no shared disks. on each node I have a C, D and E drive.“ it seems you didn’t setup the CSV disk, but in the server 2008 or above
system edition failover cluster the CSV is the necessary condition, you must setup the CSV disk first.
If you want to create one failover cluster in the Geographically separated site, please refer the following related article first.

  • Dynamic Table -  same data repeating in all rows

    Hi Satya,
I am creating the PDF form using WebDynpro java application, and the form should be stored in local disk. The user should be able to fill and save the data in the table at any time.
Note : The table used in PDF form is a dynamic table, an empty row will be added, when ADD button is clicked, the row will be deleted when DELETE button is clicked.
    The javascript code udes are,
    For adding a row,
    xfa.form.PDFDataSource.Subform1.Table1.Row1.instanceManager.addInstance(1);
    For deleting a row,
    Subform1.Table1.Row1.instanceManager.removeInstance(this.parent.index);
I have done the data binding to the fields of the table. I am able to save the data in local disk.
The problem is, when I click ADD button, a new row is created but with the same data in previous row. even if I create 10 rows, all have same data. If I try to change any data any where in the table, it reflects in all the rows.
Can you give me a solution?
    Regards,
    Prabhakar.

Thanks. Actually yesterday night I could not do the thorough testing so just waiting for your confirmation.
Actually if you open my PDF in Adobe Life Cycle Designer and check the data binding you will get the answer.
Special care should be taken in designing the context for table attribute.
The attribute type singletone also plays a important role. I have this doubt from the beginning when you have reported this problem for the first time but finally you marked it as solved so i thought there might be some other issues but again when you reported that again i did some analysis.
Now coming to final solution :
For designing a table in adobe interactive form you have consider following
You have to design the view context upto three level, I am explaining you the properties
PDFDataSource (Parent Level1) -  Cardinality 1:1 - Signetone -True - This is assigned to datasource
    TableList (Parent Level2) - Cardinality (1:1) -  Signetone -True
    TableWrapper(Parent Level3) - Cardinality (0:n) -  Signetone -True
TableData (Parent Level4) - Cardinality (0:1) -  Signetone - false (This is the main point)
Then under TableData value node, you have to put all your table attributes.
This Value Node name can be anything but hierarchy should be same as I have mentioned above.
Please try out these steps and get back to me if you have any doubt.
    Cheers
    Satya

  • RAC Voting disk recommended size?

    Hi RAC gurus
what is the Voting disk recommended size?
i need to do an appropriate size , so when i back up using dd command , it don't take very long
Am i missing something? , can i create a very big one , say 10G , then backup only the used portion
    Thanks for help

You asked if you are missing something and my initial thought is that what you missed was reading the docs.
First of all the recommended size is clearly stated in the docs ... so I am not going to hand it to you and force you to read them. I hope everyone else does so too.
Second of all, and most importantly, if you have any concept of what the Voting Disk is ... why on earth would you think that making a large one, or a small one, has any relevance to its use? Are you planning to build a cluster larger than 128 nodes?
    PS: What is 10g ... is this 10.1.0.2 or 10.1.0.3 or 10.1.0.4 or 10.2.0.1 or ....
PPS: Given that you didn't read the docs ... it would be interesting to know, too, your operating system, your cache fusion interconnect solution, your shared storage solution, and how you are planning to define your VIPs. But I will leave that for the future as no doubt you will stub your toe on each if you don't get to those docs and read them with great care.
My apology for being a bit harsh here but your chances of success, in RAC, are precisely zero if you do not understand these things. And I am really tired of people blaming Oracle and RAC for what they did to themselves.

  • Recovery scenario - Voting disk  does not match with the cluster guid

    Hi all,
Think of you can not start your guest VMs just because it has a corrupted system.img root image. And assume it contains 5 physical disk( which are all created by the RAC template) hence ASM on them.
What is the simplest recovery scneario of the guest vms (RAC)?
Can it be a feasible scenario for recover of the availablity? (Assume both of the RAC system images are corrupted and we prefer not a system level recovery rather than backup / restore)
    1. Create 2 RAC instances using the same networking and hostname details as the ones that are corrupted. - Use 5 different new disks.
2 Shutdown the newly created instances. Drop the disks from the newly created instances using VM manager.
    3. Add the old disks whose system image is failing to be recoverd but ASM disks are still in use (from the newly created instances using VM manager.) to the newly created instances.
    4. Open the newly created instances
Can we expect the ASM and CRS could be initialized and be opened without a problem?
When I try this scenario I get the folllowing error from the cssd/crsd .
    - Cluster guid 9112ddc0824fefd5ff2b7f9f7be8f048 found in voting disk does not match with the cluster guid a3eec66a2854ff0bffe784260856f92a obtained from the GPnP profile.
    - Found 0 configured voting files but 1 voting files are required, terminating to ensure data integrity.
What could be the simplest way of recovery of a virtual machine that has healthy ASM disks but corrupted system image?
    Thank you

    Hi,
you have a similar problem, when trying to clone databases with 11.2.
The problem is that a cluster is uniquely identified, and this information is hold in the OCR and the Voting disks. So exactly these 2 are not to be cloned.
To achieve what you want, simply setup your system in that way, that you have a separate diskgroup for OCR and Voting (and ASM spfile), which is not to be restored in this case of szeanrio.
Only all database files in ASM will then be exchanged later.
Then what you want can be achieved.
However I am not sure that the RAC templates have the option to install OCR and Voting into a separated diskgroup.

    Sebastian

  • Backup and Restore OCR,Voting Disk and ASM Disks in new SAN-10g RAC

    Dear Friends,
I am using 10g R2 RAC serup on Linux
My OCR,Voting Disk and ASM Disk for DBF Files are on a SAN box
Now i am reorganising SAN by scrapping the entire SAN and cretaing new LUN's (It's a must)
    so pleae let me know
    1) how do i take backup of OCR and Voting Disk from existing SAN and how do i restore it in new LUN's after SAN reorganisation
    2) how do i take backup of existing Database's from existing SAN and how do i restore it in new LUN's after SAN reorganisation.
I will be doing it in Planned downtime only
    Regards,
    DB

For step 1 you should following metalink doc.
For step 2 here is simple backup command script.
I have done this in windows for you.

    +{+
    allocate channel c1 device type disk format 'D:\app\ranjit\rman\%U';
    allocate channel c2 device type disk format 'D:\app\ranjit\rman\%U';
    backup database;
    backup current controlfile format 'D:\app\ranjit\rman\%U';

  • Voting disk and OCR disk in RAC

Can anyone explain me in basic terms ...
For what Voting and OCR disk are used in RAC.

    Hi Francisco,
    Thanks for the information.
But i am having lot of doubts in Voting disk and types of heart-beats present in Oracle 10g RAC.
As Oracle says css uses two heart beats 1. Network heart-beat 2. Disk heart-beat
    My doubts:
    1. How Oracle uses voting disk to avoid split-brain syndrome? OR what is the role of voting disk in split-brain syndrome?
    2. How Oracle monitors remote node health?
    3. Oracle says there is one more heart-beat where ckpt process keep on writing to control file for every 3 seconds and if it fails lmon process will evict the node....Is it true?
    5. Oracle Clusterware will send messages (via a special ping operation) to all nodes configured in the cluster, often called the "heartbeat." If the heartbeat fails for any of the nodes, it checks with the Oracle Clusterware configuration files (Voting disk) to distinguish between a real node failure and a network failure......Is it true? If true then what about the two heart beats(Network and Disk)...why these heart-beats are present or useful?
If possible please clear my doubts by giving some simple examples....
Awaiting for your reply and too much eager to learn and expertise in Oracle RAC architecture before administering it.
    Regards,
    Yasser.
