Does Following require a MySite (Site Collection)?
Hi,
I am currently not sure whether I want users to have their MySite SiteCollection, but I want them to be able to "follow" documents. There will be a MySiteHost available to provide the userprofile.
Is following of documents possible without having a MySite Site Collection?
Thanks
Sven

Where does a sharepoint admin find the site settings for a mysite site collection?
We are using sp 2010 service pack 2.
When I look at another user's mysite, logged in as an admin (spsadmin2 is my daily admin type account), I don't seem to have access to the site settings.
However, if I log in as the fundamental farm admin account (spfarm), I do see the site settings drop down.
The site settings I see are not the site settings for a specific user's site collection. It is, instead, the settings for "mysites" in general.
So, how can I look at the site settings for a specific user's site collection?
I wanted to be able to look at their site collection recycle bin to see if something deleted was still there.
Thank you!So, our mysites are associated with a web application separate from our other sharepoint sites.
The mysites root site collection has our SharePoint admins listed as full control owners.
The SharePoint admins also are listed as Farm admins.
Because there is only 1 secondary site collection owner permitted, if that is the means by which someone gets access to the site collection settings and permissions, then it seems like we would have to keep changing the secondary owner quite frequently.
You mentioned being able to set permissions on "the group" to have rights.
Which group? The Personal Sites Owners group of our mysites web app? Or another group?
Thank you for your help! -
Hi,
I created a color coded calendar following instructions below specified at the below URL.
http://davidlozzi.com/2012/06/20/customize-the-sharepoint-calendar-colors/
however, My Site collection uses oslo master page and because it does not show quick launch, I don't see the legend of the color coded colors.
Is it possible to make above solution work with oslo master page?
Please help...
techieHi,
Can you provide a screenshot of your page about how the calendar looks like in your environment?
As you said, “I don't see the legend of the color coded colors”, is it mean that the list of overlays on the right side of the page disappears when applying oslo master
page?
In my environment, after applying the oslo master page and adding overlay to the current Calendar view, it will be like this:
It turns out that the list of overlays still there.
Feel free to reply if this is not what you really mean.
Thanks

Administered approve infopath does not work in root site collection.
I had deployed the administrator approved infopath form to 2 different site collections in 2 different web application. While it worked for web application A it did not work for web application B and threw infopath not being able to open the file since
it was not fully trusted. So i digged around more.
Difference between web applications
Web App A
site collection was not root site collection
Web App B
site collection was root site collection
So i created the new site collection at Web App B not at root and tested and it still gave me same error.
Web App A
- Root had given read access to all users in domain
Web App B
- No read access to all users in domain
I gave read access to all users in root site collection at web app B and forms started working at non root site collection but gave same error at root site collection at web App B.
So i tried using the info path from at root site collection of Web App A, and even there the form did not work.
Does administrator approved infopath form do not work in root site collection? I was not able to find anythin in net regarding this.
If any one has any idea please help.
sachinAny idea what the form DOES, and why it needs to be an admin approved form?
I'm guessing that there's custom code, and that it's coded poorly and can't handle a difference (root site collection is just ONE possibility)

MySite Host Site Collection "Site Settings" Menu and sub-site creation
Seemingly by design, users are able to create sub-sites on the MySite Host site collection when the configuration instructions here are followed: Configure My Sites in
SharePoint Server 2013
To be a little clearer, as instructed, I've created and applied a subsite-creation user policy to the web application hosting the MySite host. Presumably, this enables sub-site creation in personal MySite site collections. Perfect.
Except... this also enables creation of subsites on the MySite host itself.
If a (non-administrative) user clicks the cog from the Newsfeed page, the scope is the MySite host.
The "site settings" link leads to the site settings of the MySite host.
There, in the "Sites Administration" section is "Sites and Workspaces".
...and there, is the option to create a new sub-site at https://my.contoso.net/. -_-
How might I avoid this undesirable state of affairs? I would like to give users the ability to create sub-sites in their own MySites, but not on the MySite host via the Newsfeed page. Is this possible?
I think I can. I think I can. This is definitely possible - So you enabled self-service site creation in Central Admin per the configuration instructions. Did you also create a user policy on the web application?
In my tenant non-admins do not have access to click site settings on the mysite host (They can click site contents, which redirects to the personal site collection). Also, they do have access to click site settings on the personal mysite site collection
though.

I did some testing and figured it out, I think. Mind you everything worked properly, users just had access I didn't want them to.
I did enable self-service site creation, and I created the user policy on the web application as per the instructions. I then discovered users had access to site settings on the Newsfeed page: https://my.contoso.com/default.aspx
The only site setting they had access to was subsite creation: https://my.contoso.com/_layouts/15/newsbweb.aspx , but I didn't want them to be able to create subsites on the host, just in their personal collections.
Deleting that user policy removed their access to subsite creation on the host, and still allowed self-service site creation, and the creation of subsites in personal collections, so the question now is:
Why are we being directed to create that user policy in the first place, when it doesn't appear to affect personal sites at all?
I think I can. I think I can. -
Can't delete a Site Collection from SharePoint admin center completely
Hi All
I'm using Office365. And I wanted to delete a Site Collection from SharePoint admin center.
But at first, I couldn't delete it from there. So I opened the Site and delete it from the Site setting successfully.
Then I went back to SharePoint admin center to check it was deleted or not completely.
But the Site Collection was still on the Site Collections list.....
Things I did are
1. IE -> Tools->Internet Options-> In General Tab click on Delete in browsing history section and check all options and again click on delete.
2. Close and re-open the browser and sign back in
I wanna make free server resource to create new Site Collection.
Does anyone know how to delete a Site Collection completely?Hi,
Can you try delete the site collection using SharePoint online power shell command? Refer the following link for that.
Delete site collection
Also, while deleting site collection from Admin Center, do you get any warning?Or what are steps you follow to delete the Site Collection from Admin Center?
Thanks,

Granting access to SharePoint Designer on a SubSite but not the Site Collection
Is it safe in SharePoint 2010 to give a user the ability to use SharePoint Designer on a SubSite of a Site Collection and not give them permission, other than Visitor access, to the root Site Collection (Parent Site collection)?
Most importantly, I want to make sure the only damage a user can do is to their own subsite, and not do anything that will impact the Site Collection.
I created a test user and granted it FULL access on a test subsite and only view on the parent site collection and was able to use designer logged in as the test user. I was able to modify the subsite pages and create workflow. I was not expecting
this to work based on the following statement in KB article
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2592376
Overall, an user needs to be a member of one of the following groups at the site collection
level to be able to use SharePoint Designer and modify SharePoint content:
- Site Collection Administrators
- Designers
- Owners
Does anyone have any advice on this?
Thanks!I think I just found out why in SharePoint 2010 I'm able to give a user "Designer" permissions on a subsite and "Read" only permission on the parent Site Collection root site and they can still use SharePoint Designer with
no permission issues in the subsite.
http://suehernandez.wordpress.com/2013/02/15/sharepoint-designer-2010-you-do-not-have-permission-to-do-this-operation/
From the Article: "Turns out the reason for these varying behaviors is this: In 2007, new sites would automatically inherit their
master pages from their parents. If you made no changes to that, it inherited right up to the top. So it’s looking at the master page from the top, in those circumstances. And as we’ve seen here, if you don’t have Design permissions to it,
it doesn’t work.
In the case of a new 2010 site (just a regular Team Site), the new 2010 behavior is to use the Master Page in the gallery it has in its own site. And since the user is an Administrator (Full Control) of that
site, then no problem getting to the Master Page!"
Does anyone have any experience with this? -
hi,
I am performing the below operations:
1) Itemupdated event handler when a document is uploaded into the document library
2) Now amreading another list which is in the root site level so, i used spsite, spweb again and accessed that splist and trying to read single line of text column and user or group column.
Now when i am reading this, i am getting the error "Value does not fall within the expected range".
I went to resource throttling under central admin -->my current web appln and changed that value to 20 from 8
even after performing the above, i am getting the same error.
pls help anyone has faced this issue before.
Accessing a splist which is under root site collection within the itemupdated eventreceiver is allowed in SP ?hello sir,
as per my requirement i have to access a splist which is residing in the ROOT SITE COLLECTION OF THIS WEB APPLICATION. the event receiver i have written is residing in one of the few document libraries within the sub site. there are hundreds
of sub sites exist in this site collection. I need to access the root site collection within the itemevent receiver and access thatperson column from that splist. why i ahve kept this list at the root site collection level [
http://server1:2020/ ] , because this splist is the UI for customer's sp admin for performing weekly tasks. like adding few items in the splist and my event receiver fires and check this column- person /group
column ] and apply permissions on the document.
so my doubt is it possible to access the root site collection from my event receiver code.
spweb from properties web is just the subsite url and not the site collection. i want to get the root sitec ollection url's splist.
also am already running this code under runwithelevatedprivileges. -
I am unable to reach the my content page of mysites from the name link within my site collection
For some reason I am no longer able to get to the personal mysites page from within our site collection. My name appears at the top right and it has an option for setting which leads to some minimal page but I can no longer use this to get to the actual
mysites page. Is there a setting I am missing that allows this to happen?Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you failed to reach the content page of mysites from the name link within site collection.
As this issue is always related to the inadequacy configuration about the MySite, you need to make sure that you had configured correctly with your MySite. You can refer to:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee624362(v=office.14)
What’s more, you can also check with the following steps.
Make sure the Web site for MySites in IIS is started.
Make sure the App pool is running
Use ULSVIEWER to check your Sharepoint ULS logs for the issue.
There are two similar articles for your reference.

The site template requires that the feature be installed in the farm or site collection
I inherited a SharePoint implementation. There is a Workflow that runs when an item in a List is created. The old developer created some Actions using Visual Studio. The Workflow is configurable using SharePoint Designer. Specifically,
there is a condition/action that creates a site using a ProjectSiteTemplate variable that is set through SPD. The value in there now is a {guid}#ProjectSiteTemplate. Workflow is failing with following message: "Failed to create site
at http://site/rpm/11. SPException The site template requires that the feature {guid} be installed in the farm or site collection".
How can I find out what Feature is missing? Specifically, I am looking for a name. That would help be debug or find out what I need to active or deploy.
Thanks for any tips provided.Get-SPFeature | where { $_.id -eq "yourGUID" }
I.e. something like:
Get-SPFeature | where { $_.id -eq "f0deabbb-b0f6-46ba-8e16-ff3b44461aeb" }
To see all of the installed features:
Get-SPFeature | Sort Displaynames
You could also search the feature directory on the server to look for the GUID.

Search does not crawl new site collection and documents
We have the following situation. We have two locations with different farms sharing the same databases (using AlwaysOn for the content databases). Everything works fine, the second site is also read-only while having the primary farm online. For existing
databases the search crawler on the second site is able to crawl existing site collections.
For new site collections created on the first farm the crawler on the first farm indexes the content proberly. The second farm though is not knowledgable of the content unless you force him to reiterate the content database. After this procedure the sites
are available on the second site as well (showing them in the web browser), but the search farm still is not able to see the new site collection and data created within.
Is there any additional iteration we have to go through making the crawler aware of the new structure / content ?
Thanks in advance, JensNope.
Change log wipes are real, that's how incremental crawls work in SharePoint.
Site A is created and modified. Changes are mirrored to the second AG, content is added, logged in the changes log and then removed as the crawler on the primary farm indexes it.
This continues until you make farm 2 aware of the changes. At that point farm 2 will look for any changes to the content in the change logs on the newly added sites. Which will be empty, or at least not contain any changes since the primary farm's last crawl.
That explains why you don't get sites indexed properly when they are added but would explain why some content is indexed afterwards which i believe is the case?
The second issue you'll find is that the crawls won't synchronise. Assuming continuous crawls kicking off at the same time you'll end up in a race between the two. If the primary farm is quicker then the second farm will continuously fall behind then catch
up and go ahead of the primary indexing process, but if the secondary farm is faster then it'll race off into the distance and then any changes that occur between the secondary farm indexing a site and the primary indexing the site will be lost on the secondary
farm.
You'll have to run full crawls. Unless MS have done a lot of work on the supporting infrastructure incremental or continuous crawls of AOAGs won't work well. -
The following location is not accessible, because it is in a different site collection
Hi,
I have an InfoPath full trust form which has been uploaded to the Central Administration. I activated the form in a Form Library using Content Management. Unfortunately, when I try to load the InfoPath form in the public machine, it throws for the error below:
The following location is not accessible, because it is in a different site collection: http://109.91.111.45:8080/sites/sbc/Success/Forms/AllItems.aspx.
Can someone please help? Please read the below scenario may be what LarsLL & Derek are referring to.
For Example:
Consider a Farm where we have one App server & one WFE. If we create a Web Application in App Server the url will be like
http://<<appServerName>>:12345/
We can access the site using the WFE name also like this
http://<<WFE ServerName>>:12345/ but when the user tries to access the form from this site we may get this error.
To resolve this create an Alternate Access Mapping for the site at
http://<<WFE ServerName>>:12345/ to ensure this site can be resolved by InfoPath.
Cause:
This happens when InfoPath tries to load the Form. It would try to verify if the Site collection exists. Read the article here

MySite as a Publishing Site Collection (for Cross Site Publishing)
Hello,
is it possible to connect the MySite in SharePoint with an Product Catalog? I have an Authoring Site Collection and a MySite Collection. In the MySite i have allready activated the Publishing Feature and then connected my Catalog from the Authoring Site.
After that i've made a Navigation from the Term Store Management Tool.
The Problem is, that i cant see any changes an no Navigation at the MySite.
Is it somehow possible to get it working?
ThanksHi Arnold,
As MySite use My Site Host site template in SharePoint, so the master page is different and MySite use custom master page for rendering the navigation.
If you want to use Managed Navigation for MySite, then you need to create a custom master page for rendering the terms in navigation.
Here is a similar thread for you to take a look:
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/forums/sharepoint/en-US/5c48c32f-f102-4935-83d3-1ba06be072ec/using-managed-navigation-for-my-sites
Here is a link for creating a custom master page for rendering the managed navigation:

Best regards.
