Does iPhoto 11 have event hierarchy organization capability?

I asked a similar question in 2009 with a "no" for iPhone 09. Link: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2089635&tstart=0
Since I started organizing my photos in iPhoto I enjoy the events feature, far more than the folders aspect of organizing. I would like to categorize my pictures through a hierarchy of events instead of folders. For example, if I take a series of pictures of various landscapes, each photo session would be a self contained event, and then all of those events could be placed within a large event named something arbitrary like "nature." If I click on "nature" it will unravel the sub-tier of events all containing landscapes, which I could then click on to view the pictures.
I know this is an option for the folders menu. But to me it seems more visually logical and efficient to have this concept in events format.
So I'm curious to know if this is a feature or if there is something similar to what I am looking for in iPhoto '11.

So in other words no. iPhoto still doesn't have events that you can make in hierarchy form. Why do you think events are a "very basic organization"? I personally find events to be far more intuitive than folders because they use two forms of communication: written language (label) and visual (key photo), as opposed to folders which use just one (label). I'm not sure how even how events are more basic than a folder in that respect. I'm a very spatially oriented person so it helps to target both sides of my brain with the language acquisition (label) and the spatial orientation (photo) side of my brain at the same time. Is this not efficient to you?
Incorrect
The answer is YES - not to your specific question but to what you want to accomplish
but not using events - they are just the automatic very basic organization
you can create albums and albums can be placed in folders and folders and be placed in folders
for example using keywords every photo can be categorized in any number of ways - then smart albums can collect the photos for display
Likewise you can use smart albums for many different ways of finding the photos your want
and places shows your where the photos were taken
and faces shows you who in in them
Events are very basic because they are inflexible, automatically set up by date and can not be nested - albums and folders are very flexible and can be nested and can hold what ever you want
Just because event can not be made hierarchal certainly does not mean that one can ignore the existence of albums and folders which are hierarchal and a part of iPhoto - iPhoto has an extremely strong and flexible hierarchal organization - it simply is not named "events"

Does iPhoto not have safeguards against accidentally deleting an entire photo book, which is very easily done with a single press of delete (and which can be done when you think you are deleting just a photo)? No "are you sure you want to delete?" before it happens? No way of copying your book while you are working on it (to make multiple versions of it, or just to have a safeguard copy), and no real way of restoring it after (since, remarkably, the photo books don't appear as items - items which could very easily be recovered otherwise)?

I get a dialog box when I try to delete a book.
And if you right click on the book in the left column you can duplicate it so you can have multiple versions.

  • Does iPhoto '11 have the copy and paste function?

On my old MacBook the iPhoto allowed for the copying and pasting of adjustments, on my iPhoto '11 where the copy and paste option used to be there's nothing.

    Terence -
I tried that, but it didn't work .. and I discovered why.  The key was in the last word of your sugg's first line:  "move."  I don't want to MOVE the pic, I want to COPY it to another event, and following your suggs produced this box:
So, with your and the Old Toad's help, I now see I was pounding sand - can't do it!  Unless we can get the iPhoto developer gurus to add that capability, we'll have to consider this case ... Closed.
    Thanks, guys!

  • Does iPhoto library have to be in pictures folder?

My external HD is getting buggy, so currently moved my iPhoto library to my documents folder, should I have placed it in my pictures folder instead? Does it matter?
    thanks

It doesn't have to be but that's where iPhoto looks for it if there's an interruption while using iPhoto and it loses the link to the other location. Then it might create a new library and confuse things. Personally, I'd move it to the Pictures folder.

  • Does iPhoto '06 have better editing tools?

I've read that iPhoto '06 has better editing tools than '05. Could someone explain?
Is the Retouch tool's brush still so large it can't be used on small blemishes?
Does the red eye work any better?
Is there any way to adjust the shadows and the highlights separately? Or, ideally, is there something like the shadow/highlights tool from Photoshop?
    thanks,
    John

    John,
The Retouch brush appears to be the same size. However it is much more effective than it was in 5. Tiny wipe clear up blemishes. Clicking on a blemish used to effect it very mildly. Now clicking on a blemish twice clears it up.
Red-eye is rock solid. It appears to be even better than it was in iPhoto 4.
The Adjust dashboard did not change, so you don't have anymore contols than the B/W sliders, Exposure, Contrast and Brightness.
Effects Dashboard was added. It's limited: BW, Sepia, Antique, Saturate, Desaturate, Matte, Vignette, and Edge Blur.
The MakerNote bug that slowed launching and shutdown of iPhoto 5 appears to have been fixed in 6.
So there's not a lot new, but it does what it's supposed to do much better.

  • Why does iPhoto import new events at the beginning of the events?f

When I import photos from a camera of from a hard drive, iPhoto '11 places the new untitled event near , not at the beginning, of the chronological events list.  Is there a remedy for this?

You can change that via the View ➙ Sort ➙ By Date ➙ Descending menu option.

  • Having bought Aperture, does iPhoto still have its uses?

I've wanted Aperture for the longest time, planned to buy the box later this year, then the App Store offers a lower-cost download and it's on my iMac. Unopened.
The Discussions tell a lot, including there's a learning curve and 8 GB of memory is much better than my 4 (I'll disable Face Recognition). What I most want are the editing tools and the separate libraries.
There's 2540 photos in iPhoto and while it will be great to re-work some, the great majority won't be touched. So my question is, would it make sense to keep iPhoto going -- even continue to use it for simple snaps? Is there a problem with that?
One reason for my caution is I had big problems with a recent iMac migration and I read of others loosing photos when moving to Aperture -- or not knowing where to find them.
    Thanks . . . Fortes

You're caution in approaching Aperture is a good thing. While it is relatively easy to get it up and running in a short period of time and to get you iPhoto library into it, it is highly unlikely that you will get it the way you want it on the first attempt or second or third. It's a lot like chess, the moves can be learnt is a short period of tim you'll spend a lifetime learning the game.
For that matter at this stage you don't really know how you want. Until you have used Aperture for a while you won't know how it works, it's strengths and it's weaknesses. Even reading everything you can get your hands on won't make up for the actual experience of using it and finding out that that elegant plan you had for the library setup fails flat when something you hadn't thought about pops up.
Here's how I made the switch from iPhoto to Aperture. Knowing that I would't get it right the first time, I made sure I would have the ability to totally blow away whatever I had done and start fresh. This meant having backups of everything. This can't be stressed enough. Knowing that you can go in and try anything you like in Aperture and if it fails you can get rid of it all is very powerful and will accelerate you're learning.
When I was ready to make the switch, first I froze iPhoto. Nothing went into iPhoto after that, I then created a new Aperture library called +Camera Holding+ which I used to import everything I shot after that date. This library was setup with a very basic one project per shot setup. Nothing fancy just a place to keep my new images until I was sure I had Aperture setup like I wanted. This library was also vaulted to to separate HDs.
Now the fun part experimenting and learning Aperture. I imported my iPhoto library numerous times trying one setup and then another. I also created separate libraries for the images I was currently shooting and tried various library setups and import strategies with those. I must have spent close to 3 months before I was ready to totally commit to Aperture. And even now 6 months latter has I've used it more I not totally satisfied with my setup but at least at this point its mostly minor tweaks to the structure so they can be done in place. But I still have numerous experimental libraries to try things out in.
So take you're time and remember the best way to get comfortable with the program is to not have to be worrying about messing up and destroying your images.

Does iMovie 08 have a Backup to Disc feature like iTunes? This way you could back up your entire Movie Library by feeding it discs, and then periodically only backup what has changed since the last backup? Does iPhoto 08 have this feature as well?
    Thanks. Red

Does iMovie 08 have a Backup to Disc feature like iTunes?
    no.
    videos usually have 13GB/h .. HiDef 40-50GB/h ..
if you want a backup of your Movies Library, consider the usage of a huge external, firewire connected harddrive (MacOsExtended formatted) ...

    Hi Stavros0203,
When restoring your entire system from a Time Machine backup, it is restored to the state it was when that backup was made. See this article for reference -

  • How does iphoto order events?

How does iphoto arrange events for display purposes? It isn't alphabetically by title, it isn't chronologically by event creation date. I am baffled. If I know how they are ordered, I can move photos among events easier by renaming the events so they show up next to each other, then I can drag and drop photos in adjacent events without scrolling. Once I am finished, I can simply rename the events back to the original names. That would be the easiest way I have found to move photos around among events. I just can't figure out the riddle of how the events are ordered.

By default events are sorted by the date of the oldest photo in the event
Probably the easiest way to move photos is to flag the photos you want together and create an event from flagged photos
But generally it is best to just leave events in date/time order and use albums for detailed organization - and/or keywords and smart albums

  • Why does iPhoto (9.0/11) not retain the Event name when exporting more than one event? (using File - Export - Album name with number).

Why does iPhoto (9.0/11) not retain the Event name when exporting more than one event? (using File -> Export -> Album name with number).
Exporting a single Event retains the Event name which is what I'd expect. But highlighting more than one event and exporting it renames the images to Events 001.JPG, Event 002.JPG etc.
I was recently on holidays and had all my events nicely split on Dad's computer but when I went to export it I couldn't retain any of this information. Now I have to replicate this all again on my computer.
It wasn't possible to export the entire library as the external drive was fat32 format an I didn't want all of it. It would be nice to export a bunch of events to someone and have it retain the name.
Does anyone have a work around or will this be fixed at some point by Apple?

  • Why does iPhoto delete my photos I have deleted off my memory card?

I have an 8 gb memory card for my camera. Sometimes I want to show pictures to people off my camera, so I don't delete all my photos off the memory card. I pick and choose. Recently, I was looking through iPhoto at old events and saw that the pictures that are no longer on my memory card were also no longer in iPhoto. This is extremely frusterating because I lost hundreds of pictures!! Does anyone know how to stop this from happening?

Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • Where does Iphoto store ratings, arrangement of photos, events, libraries?

Hi, I currently have Leopard, I was planning on doing a clean install with Snow Leopard soon. Afterwards I plan on restoring Iphoto back to the way it was. I have a 70 gb library and importing my photos, rearranging the events, photos, and libraries would take ages if I had to start from scratch. I have my whole computer backed up using Carbon Copy Cloner. My question is where does Iphoto store the ratings, manual arrangement of photos, events, libraries, etc? Thanks

iPhoto is a relational database program and everything is stored in the iPhoto library - it must be treated as a single entity - it is not possible to isolate components in it - simply drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the clone back to the pictures folder of the main computer
To test prior to doing an erase and install (the Mac does not have a "clean install") you can depress the option key and launch iPhoto and select the backup copy and test it - be sure to do an option launch and paint back to the main library afterwards

  • If I have a pic in more than one album, does iPhoto make more than one copy of that pic?  When I search the file name on finder, it seems to be showing one copy of that file for every album it's in.

If I have a pic in more than one album, does iPhoto make more than one copy of that pic?  When I search the file name on finder, it seems to be showing one copy of that file for every album it's in.

No it doesn't. Albums simply reference the photos in the Library. A single shot can be in 100 albus and use no extra disk space at all.
If you have the same shot in two Events then yes, the file is duplicated.
When I search the file name on finder, it seems to be showing one copy of that file for every album it's in.
The Finder doesn't really understand the iPhoto Library. It's quite possible for the iPhoto Library to contain many files with the same name. The Library also contains different versions of the same shot - thumbnail, originals and edited version. This is normal.
