Does loopback address of a router have a vlan??

hi all,
i need to know if the interface IP for BGP link and the loopback address of router have a vlan for them or not??
is yes, then how to check that?

Peter
While I basically agree with your response I would propose one refinement. If we are looking at the physical Ethernet interface of a router and if that interface is connected to a switch access port then there is certainly a VLAN associated with the switch side. And one might then also say that the VLAN is associated with the router physical interface.
Perhaps another way to look at it starts from the fact that a defining characteristic of a VLAN is that it defines a layer 2 broadcast domain. A router physical interface also defines a layer 2 broadcast domain.

• Loopback address as management address

Hi
Can I create loopback interfaces on all my layer-3 capable switches and use this address to manage all my switches instead of using vlan 1 as management vlan.what exactly i mean is
I have a 7200 router and ten 3750 switches connected to it. So can i create loop back on all my switches and 7200 and use this address to manage all the switches.
Is this possible. If so is there any disadvantage in doing so. Thanks for your help.

1) It means all loopback address in each device should be different. loopback interface just like a logical interface in a device.
2) VLAN 1 is default and built-in VLAN in a switch, we normally will create another VLAN for the management purpose only. You can assign the management VLAN to a port then this port will only be the management segment connection or include the management VLAN in the trunk to other devices.
In real situation, many providers use loopback address for the management and routing ID due to this interface never down. And you can assign separated subnet for the management segment w/o require to use production/data network subnet.
Hope this helps.

• Connect to switch loopback address

Hello,
I have a loopback address on swich A, also switch A connects to switch B through a trunk.  Switch B has 3 SVI vlans that are routed thru eigrp.  What I want to do is connect to switch A to loopback IP address. I tried a static route but did not work can connect to loopback address.  The config for switch A is loopback address is 192.168.137.6 255.255.255.255. On swich B one switch SVI address is 192.168.136.1 255.255.255.128 and eigrp  routes 192.168.136.1 thru network 192.168.136.0.  Can I use a static route from loopback address to SVI address 192.168.136.1 I tried that did not work. I just want to configure something only on switch A to connect  to loopback address for management, any suggenstions what will work and with what switch commands?
Thanks,

I am not fully understanding the environment that you describe and so do not fully understand your issue. But based on what I think that I do understand it seems to me that it should be possible to configure a host specific static route on switch B that would allow you to connect to the loopback on switch A, assuming that switch A has an IP address other than the loopback which is reachable from switch B. If this does not seem to adequately address your question then please provide clarification of your question.

• Mac Pro does not connect to ADSL router

Took my mac in so that they could install airport extreme card.
When clicking on the Airport icon on task bar my router is listed in the drop down menu. When selecting it, it asks for a WPA password, after entering the password it shows the connection failed. What's interesting is that I get same error even if I type password incorrect in, it does not complain about the password being wrong.
Got a notebook with widows xp that connects fine to this router, when connecting the Mac to the router via ethernet it works fine though.
I have installed my Airport card after I have installed 10.5.2 so I was thinking it might be a good idea to maybe install Tiger or 10.5 to see if this fixes the problem as I have read many posts of people complaining about their networks after installing 10.5.2.
No idea where to start trouble shooting.

Thanks Linc. Turns out the problem was the length of the Cat 6 cable. I have wires in the walls, so I do not know the exact length, but I reckon it must be 60 ft. If I connect the mini to the switch with a shorter cable it does work. Problem is I have no way to change the distance between switch and Mini: switch needs to be where I have all the wires departing to reach endpoints scattered through the apartment, and mini needs to be where I will use it.
Any views out there on whether I need a different switch, or a different computer?

• Ghost IP address on WAG320N router

I want to set up internet access (from home) to a Filemaker programme I am running on my computer here at work. It is Peer-to-peer, NOT server to client.
As far as I understand, in order to regularly connect, you need to have a static IP address to ensure easy connection (a non-moving target).
In order to implement the IP address connection, my understanding was that I had to enable my computer to own that (static) IP address and then open ports to allow access through the router to my computer.
The router address is 58.108.188.150 and I have allowed 20 users, so the 166 is within the range of addresses.
I then have tried to choose the .166 address for my computer by selecting a Using DHCP with a manual address option (see attached), but it comes up with "another device is using this address".
I have checked using the Router's DHCP Client Table and the ARP/RARP Table as well as a third party Network utility and they both clearly show that no other device is using that IP address.
The only thing I can think of that may be causing this is that when I first changed the router's settings from 192.168.123.100 to the 58.108.etc settings I entered the starting number (the router address) as .166.
This was borne out by the Network Utility actually showing the router as having 2 IP addresses, until I deleted the .166 entry (can't remember how I did that - probably through the Network Utility itself)
May that have somehow kept a "ghost" image of the address and is now keeping me from using it?
I'd prefer not to have to reset and lose all my other settings.

Hi,
This ghost address on your gateway, well, my advice is to perform a reset. You don’t need to worry about reconfiguration. You just have to save a copy or backup of your wag320n settings under administration.  You may restore the gateway’s settings after the reset.  To make sure that ghost ip address will not anymore appear, you assign static ip and static dns on every network device. One by one, add the devices to your gateway and then refresh the dhcp client table and refresh it. No ip address should be seen in the DHCP client table if all devices have an assigned ip addresses. Anything unusual on your device could be a firmware issue. If your network is working fine, no need to worry. Any speed and signal problems experienced could be the result of hardware or firmware problem.

• Airport Extreme in extender mode does not reconnect after main router reset.

I have an Airport Extreme 4th Gen (extender). set to extend the signal from an Airport Extreme 5th Gen (main).  Whenever the main router resets (after reconfig, etc) the extender does not reconnect.  I would have to restart the extender before it will connect again to the network.  However, my Airport Express set to extend will automatically reconnect.  Is this a settings issue?  Please advise.

Ok, well I am hoping you are not doing a re-config of your 5'th gen all the time? This should only be done very rarely... we're talking like less than once a year for many people.  Unless there's something else going on there, I wouldn't worry about it if you have to power-cycle the 4'th gen once in a few blue moons.

• Does a belkin pre-n router work well with a macbook?

Hello, I have a macbook and am going to purchase a wireless router. I've been looking at the belkin pre-n router and have read some great reviews, but none used a mac to test the router. So does anyone have experience with this router and if so, would you recommend it? (or does anyone recommend a different router?) Thanks.

Using a MacBook you would not gain any of the alleged benefits of using a pre-n router.
Performance wise, a MacBook would work just as well with any wifi certified 802.11g wireless router.

match ip address 101
router(config-route-map)#set ip next-hop 1.1.1.1 ?
A.B.C.D IP address of next hop

Hi,
You may get your answer in below link
http://www.groupstudy.com/archives/ccielab/200812/msg00999.html
First next-hop will be used unless until that is not unreachable. If first is unreachable, then next one will be used. Since these next-hops are directly connected, router can easily come to know whether they are active or not. In case you want to set some loopback ip as next-hop then you need to use keyword recursive "set ip next-hop recursive"

• Virtual Hosts, lookupd and loopback address

For days I've been trying to install and configure MySQL, phpMyAdmin and virtual hosts, but I just seem to be digging myself a deeper hole. I decided to focus on virtual hosts first and learned how to modify my httpd.conf, hosts and NetInfo files, only to discover that I also have to modify something called lookupd, which I can't even find.
I posted a rather detail query at http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4232285#4232285
and received this reply:
I'm not real sure it applies to virtual domains, but if you want your local machine to redirect URLs to a local domain you need to set up lookupd. . . . As it is, your browser is not even finding Apache because you have no DNS server. As an expedient alternative most people use the loopback address with a custom port number, but you are more demanding than that.
Maybe you should repost in the UNIX section and use a better subject line. This is pretty geeky stuff.
So is it true that I've been beating my brains out when there's a simpler method involving a loopback address with a custom port number? If so, can someone tell me how to do it or direct me to a tutorial? If, instead, I have to modify this lookupd file, how do I find it? I can't find it with Spotlight, and I haven't been able to locate it with TextWrangler yet.
Thanks!

• Inter-VLAN routing, Auto-Voice VLAN and IP Address-Helper

Hope that somebody can help me with the setup in the screenshot.
Planning to use Auto-Voice VLAN and Smartports to configure VOIP
LLDP-MED will be enabled on the switch to detect the IP phones so they will be moved to the Voice VLAN (If not the first 6 signs will be added to the OID table). The Voice VLAN ID will be 2 >> Voice VLAN will be automatically enabled once a device is recognized as a IP phone right?
Workstations will be connected to the Cisco switch, VLAN data will be untagged and will remain on the native VLAN.
Smartports will be used to configure the ports (Macro's) >> Should configure the ports as trunks as assigns the correct VLANs right?
But how do i configure the IP Helper-Address? Do i have to create the Voice VLAN on both switches and then run the command "IP Helper Address" to specify a DHCP server? From what i've been reading it's required, when using Inter-VLAN routing, to configure the VLAN interface with an IP address. But it's going to give problems when both switches are connected to eachother and both have the same VLAN configured including the same IP address assigned to their VLAN interface?
Normal data should pass  the ASA firewall, VOIP traffic should go through the Vigor modem to a hosted VOIP provider. The best way, i assume, is to configure 2 separate scopes on the DHCP server?
Still confused on how to set it up, hope that someone can point me in the right direction

If you're sending voice to only the Vigor modem then there is no need for a trunk between the SF-300 and the Vigor modem. You can just set that to an untag packet for the VLAN 2 between that switch and the Vigor modem.
On the 'edge' SF300 where the IP phone/PC is it is obviously going to interoute there and of course the phone port is tagged and PC port is untagged.
For the IP helper, it uses UDP-RELAY and it should be enabled on the port itself and enabled on the global configuration. You may also need option 82. Also keep in mind, depending how your DHCP server works, it may need option 82 configured as well or at least a route to understand the subnets in the layer 3 environment to get traffic across the VLANS.

• Address Book doesn't have "sync with Google contacts" any more...!!!!!

Hi Guys
Hoping someone can help...
I've updated to 10.0.8, and I just have a look at the options under Address Book. There are still options to sync contacts with MobileMe, and Yahoo (and one other, which I can't remember as I'm not at my Mac), but the last one, "sync with Google contacts", has disappeared!
Has anyone else noticed if that has gone? Have Apple decided not to partner with Google any more?
Or does my Address Book just have some kind of bug?
