Does Mail encrypt passwords?

Does Apple's Mail app encrypt passwords when getting mail?

It depends on which mail protocol you use to connect to your service provider. Mail supports all of the common protocols that encrypt passwords and data, but not all mail providers support encryption of passwords or data.

  • Does pages encrypt password-protected documents?

I would like to protect a document against reading its contents by others. Therefore I would like to know whether Pages encrypts a document when you set a password on it. I tried to look at the contents of a .pages file, but even when it is not encrypted I could not find back the text in clear form. So is the document always encrypted anyway? If encryption is used, how strong is it?
Observation: an encrypted document of 65k shrinks to 24k when you set a password on it. When you then remove the password it is 49k. Very puzzling...

Thanks for taking the time to write again, Peter. I don't think I will take it to Apple Care, it would probably take a lot of time and trouble to get an answer, if at all. Instead, I will just assume that, if there had been encryption, that would have been a feature worth mentioning in the user documentation. And since the user manual and help pages do not mention it at all, just password protection, the most likely answer is that there is no encryption.
I will assume that you are right with your suggested proprietary file layout, possibly in combination with compression. For serious business, I will encrypt the file using a separate tool.

  • Mail does not recognize password for incoming mail

I use mail to retrive messages from two pop accounts a mac account and a work account. But now Mail shows a message saying that the server for my log in name does not recognizes the password. But if I use the webmail of that account it does recognize the password. I am able to sentmail from that account as well as to receive and send from the .mac account. What is the problem?
Thank you very much for any help.

Your email provider is not copmcast, that is your ISP.
You apparently have a comcast account that you access using their web mail. Not really relevant here as we are talking about accounts in mail clients, not browsers.
The settings you have posted are to access your comcast mail account in Thunderbird, something Thunderbird is designed to do. Manage multiple mail accounts.

I just upgraded to 10.8.2 and Mail is having a problem. It won't remember my password for getting mail; but it does remember the password for sending mail, i.e., smtp. Does anyone know of a fix?

The solution surprised even me, and we've been using Macs since 1984 (still have an original 128K).
I contacted Apple support, and because we had just upgraded yesterday, clicked on the "exception" button as opposed to paying the $19.99 one-time support fee. An Apple tech called and the problem was solved in two minutes.
Somehow during the installation of OS 10.8.2 (over 10.6.x) the key chain data for my email ISP login password got corrupted. The solution was to delete both the POP mail and SMTP entries in my keychain.
Back to Mail, it asked for the POP password, I entered it and bingo, mail got busy downloading. Interestingly, the password was also entered into the SMTP panel.
So, that's it. Thanks for you response, Mr. Hoffman, and regards.

  • James Mail Server Password Encoding From PHP

    Hi,
I am writing a PHP website server administration component for the MYSQL database used by James Mail server.
When I encode the password in PHP using MD5, Crypt, SHA, SHA1 or use MSQL encoding functions (MD5 or SHA) when I try to send mail to the Java server it keeps telling me "ERROR smtpserver: AUTH method LOGIN failed".
1)In PHP what encoding should I use so the JavaMail API can encode the authentication the same way?
    2) If I want to use no encoding what code do I put in the pwdAlgorithm field?
    PHP Version 5.2.6
    Apache 2.0 Handler

This is a interaction with Java thus who better to ask then the people that work with JavaMail password encryption all the time.
What I am trying to solve is to find out the encryption format of James. Does James encrypt the passwords itself when a new mailbox is created or JavaMail's security class?
You will notice my second question is what code does james or javamail use when no encryption is used. (e.g. pwdAlgorithm). This field is the MySQL field used to store the encryption type.
James still has to encrypt the password in the format which is specified to verify the password.
Thus my main question, why does PHP encoding not match James's encoding?
In PHP the same encoding format should be used.
    PHP uses :
    SHA1 - RFC 3174 - US Secure Hash Algorithm 1 (SHA1)
    MD5 - RSA Data Security, Inc. MD5 Message-Digest Algorithm

  • RBACx Encrypted Password Change Utility

    Hi all,
In the OIA/SRM installation guide, there is a reference to a tool, to find out the password of rbacxservice.
"Oracle Identity Analytics utilizes an encrypted password when communicating with the database.
To change the default database password, use the RBACx Encrypted Password Change Utility"
Could you please help me finding out this tool.
    Many thanks in advance.
    Warm regards,
    Manipradeep Sunku.

The mentioned tool only encrypts the password so that you don't have to store a plain text password in the config file. It does not decrypt it. The default rbacxservice password is rbacxservice.
The tool does not come with the OIA/SRM distribution so if you need it, you will need to contact support.

  • Reset encryption password for NEW iPhone backups

    Hello Everyone,
I have an iPhone and iPad which are currently working perfectly.  However during testing I figured out that I somehow lost my iTunes backup encryption password.  As such I figured I would just change the backup password, delete the old backups, and create NEW backups for which I do know the password to and all would be good (and ready for a future device failure.)
However it appears that iTunes will not allow you to change or disable the encryption password for NEW backups without first knowing the old encryption password.  Does anyone know if a way around this?
    Thank you for your time.

    Thanks!

  • Powershell script monitor with encrypted password

I have created a powershell script based monitor in my management pack and everything is ok but I can't get my credentials work inside the script. I want to open pssession to another computer with my credentials. I have triple checked that my pssession is
working because I can access it from powershell console.
This works perfectly at local server from PSconsole:
    $EncryptedPassword ="01000000d08c9ddf0115d1118c7a00c04fc297eb01000000534b2....etc...etc..."
    $pw = convertto-securestring -String $EncryptedPassword
    $cred = new-object System.Management.Automation.PSCredential -argumentlist "MyDOMAIN\MyACCOUNT",$pw
    $s = New-PSSession -ComputerName "MyServer" -Port MyPort -Credential $cred
But when I run the same lines inside my management pack the convertto-securestring
does nothing, it just wont convert the encrypted password to secure string!
I have tried this plain text method and it works
inside my management pack, but I don't want to use it because you can see the password in plain text:
    ConvertTo-SecureString -String "myPlainTextPassword" -AsPlainText -Force
This is the $error variable, so it's basically says that I don't have anything in the password secure string variable because the convertion did not work for some reason:
The argument is null. Provide a valid value for the argument, and then try running the command again. Cannot process argument transformation on parameter 'Credential'. PromptForCredential Exception calling ".ctor" with "2" argument(s):
"Cannot process argument because the value of argument "password" is null. Change the value of argument "password" to a non-null value." The system cannot find the file specified. Exception calling "SecureStringToBSTR"
with "1" argument(s): "Value cannot be null. Parameter name: s" The system cannot find the file specified. Exception calling "SecureStringToBSTR" with "1" argument(s): "Value cannot be null. Parameter name: s"
The system cannot find the file specified.
So is there some known issue with SCOM Agent / management pack when you are dealing with convertto-securestring
    function with encrypted passwords?
I used these methods to encrypt the password: Technet article about encryption

    I got it to work!

  • Reading Encrypted Password from Configuration File and Decrypt it at login

    Hi All,
My application reads a configuration file to connect to the ORACLE database. The values defined for password are clear text as given below:
    user: 'mh'
    password='abcd1234'
Is there is any way I can give an encrypted password in the configuration file instead of a clear text file and at the time of login ORACLE decrypts it. I am using ORACLE 11g Database.
My company have a requirement that passwords are not stored in the clear in properties files. the reason being I suppose that if the password is stored in plaintext someone could hit the property file directly, get the password and then connect to the database with it.
For a regular user connecting through an Oracle client or SQL Developer they would need to have the plaintext password in order to connect.
its based on the requirements of
    International Standards Organization Guidance
ISO 17799 9.5.4 requires password management systems to:
enforce the use of individual passwords
allow users to select and change their own passwords if appropriate
enforce a choice of quality passwords
     force regular changes of passwords
maintain a record of previous user passwords to prevent re-use
not display passwords when they are being entered
store password files separately from application system data
store passwords in encrypted form using a one way encryption algorithm
alter default vendor passwords following installation of software
So if I can store the password encrypted using a one way algorithm then hacker/user couldn't decrypt it and then access the database.
I have feeling there is a way of configuring this in Oracle advanced Security, but just can't quite get it to work.

So if I can store the password encrypted using a one way algorithm then hacker/user couldn't decrypt it and then access the database.... and neither can your application. Encryption is needed in this case. The decryption must be written into your application. I've written my own in some cases, but finding a library for your development language is a smarter solution.
One alternative is using an Oracle wallet. It doesn't fit every circumstance and does have some maintenance headaches.
You can set up a basic secure password store to encrypt and store the password for a given user@instance combination, and then connect to the database without passing a password. SQL*Net adds in the appropriate password from the wallet for when you connect.

Advanced Security Option also allows you to set up a Public Key Infrastructure connections (SSL encryption and/or authentication). It also uses a wallet to store the SSL certificates and credentials. I don't have personal experience on this approach.
SSL and the wallet allow you to connect to the database similar to CONNECT/@net_service_name or sqlplus /@net_service_namehttp://docs.oracle.com/cd/B28359_01/network.111/b28530/asossl.htm#CIHCBIEG

  • TS3276 Mail rejected password to one of my 3 accounts with Gmail, all old.  Successfully entered the account from Google mail interface.  What's wrong?

I have had Mail for years.  Have new MacBook Pro, set my old 3 accounts with Gmail, used them successfully. Yesterday, Mail rejected password to one of my accounts and does not accept it repeatedly.  I entered this account from Gmail page, no problem, so my password is correct.  Went back to Mail, this particular account is rejected.  Checked all Mail preferences, all are the same as initially set.  What is wrong?

In both cases, the default address is right.  However, upon receiving the email, it says the wrong address.  Thus, when people reply to my emails, I do not get it in my apple email, I have to sign in under the other (wrong) email address.

  • Mobile Sync Client does not save password properly

The Mobile Sync Client (simple_sync_android application provided with Oracle DMS) does not appear to save password correctly. When you select the checkbox to Save Password, my guess is that it stores an encrypted password but then does not return the decrypted version of the password. As a result login fails with the error
Encountered error: Server error, id = 2,001: "USER_INVALID in external auth; logon denied."
For details, check out the "My Experience" section at http://oracledms.blogspot.in/2012/08/sample-app-step-2-install-mobile-sync.html
Obvious workaround: Type in the password again and click Sync

  • Why does mail stop working?

Why does mail stop working when it has worked fine for years?

OK, thank you.  I use apple for e-mail.  I have an @me address and I have long subscribed to mobile me, which has recently become icloud.  Yesterday the @me mail account appeared to stop recognizing my e-mail password for my primary mail account on my two imacs but not on my ipad.  The most recent e-mail I have received on my imacs is 7:16am yesterday, but I know from my ipad that I have received numerous e-mails since then.  I have other mail accounts, including one for the school where I teach.  I am receiving e-mail on the school account ok.
I made no changes to my password or otherwise for my primary mail account any time recently.  I also still have my @mac address.
Generally, I do not understand icloud.  I do not understand how to sync information across computers.
When I go to preferences in mail and I click and accounts and account information, I do not understand anything that I see there.  When I try to re-type my password, there seems to be no way to save it except to switch to another mail account.  I know from past experience that if I attempt to fix whatever might be wrong with mail I do not know what I am doing.
Any information would be helpful.  Thank you.

  • Can I set a role using a encrypted password ?

    Sir,
I encrypt the role password using dbms_obfuscation package. Can I enable a role using such a password before decrypting it ?
    Thanks a lot
    Stephen

dbms_obfuscation does not create passwords. A password is not something you can decrypt ! At least until today (maybe tomorrow...).
you can use the command of chris or simply
    alter role ROLEX identified by 'SWATCH';
    alter ROLE X identified by values '8E9A9A5413F0B5EE';
