Does maxuprc apply to root?
We need to limit the number of processes that can be executed by normal users on our Solaris 10 system. We have a lot of students who are just learning how fork() works, and the system has gone down twice now because it ran out of processes. Historically, there has always been a limit, but now, apparently, there isn't, and I need to institute one.
I've figured out that the way to do this is to set the maxuprc in /etc/system. If I do this, does it also limit the number of processes that root can run, or does it only apply to regular users?
Thanks!

From Brandon Hutchinson at http://www.brandonhutchinson.com/Solaris_kernel_tunables.html
short answer - maxuprc is max user processes per user id, does not affect root.
e.g., determining current maxuprc kernel parameter with adb:
# adb -k
physmem f74c
maxuprc/D (display maxuprc value in decimal)
maxuprc:
maxuprc: 250
maxuprc/X (display maxuprc value in hexadecimal)
maxuprc:
maxuprc: fa
$q (exit out of adb)
Running sysdef also shows the values of certain kernel tunables.
e.g., dynamically adjusting maxuprc with adb:
maxuprc is a kernel tunable that defines the maximum number of concurrent processes per user ID. This value does not affect the root user.
The default maxuprc value is max_nprocs - reserved_procs.
# adb -kw
physmem f74c
maxuprc/D (display maxuprc value in decimal)
maxuprc:
maxuprc: 16389
v+0x1c/W0x12c (set maxuprc to 300; 0x12c is hexademical for 300)
$q (exit out of adb)
The change will be reflected in sysdef output, but not in adb. However, the change does take effect.
# sysdef | grep v_maxup
300 maximum processes per user id (v.v_maxup)
# echo maxuprc/D | adb -k
physmem 7dd2c
maxuprc:
maxuprc: 16389
When you exceed maxuprc, you will see the following:
bash: fork: Resource temporarily unavailable
sh: fork failed - too many processes
/var/adm/messages:
unix: out of per-user processes for uid \d+
To preserve this change after a reboot, add set maxuprc = 300 in /etc/system.

[SOLVED] df -h does not reflect true root filesystem size
Why does df -h show root filesystem as being only 20G?
df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/cryptroot 20G 15G 4.6G 76% /
dev 7.7G 0 7.7G 0% /dev
run 7.7G 668K 7.7G 1% /run
tmpfs 7.7G 70M 7.7G 1% /dev/shm
tmpfs 7.7G 0 7.7G 0% /sys/fs/cgroup
tmpfs 7.7G 224K 7.7G 1% /tmp
/dev/sda1 239M 40M 183M 18% /boot
tmpfs 1.6G 8.0K 1.6G 1% /run/user/1000
That is what my df -h output looks like. My setup is full disk encryption using dm-crypt with LUKS, per the guide on arch wiki. I basically created one /boot partition and left the rest of the disk to be an encrypted partition for the root filesystem. So why is my system complaining about (and acting as if it's running out of space)? Have I forgotten something?
Thank you for reading this. Let me know if you need any more logs or info on my setup - I realise I haven't provided very much info here, but I can't think of what to provide.

MBean Attribute (Does not apply to application modules)
Can any one tell what this mean ?
MBean Attribute (Does not apply to application modules) :
is this means that it wont help for datasources for any J2EE application ????
Inactive Connection Timeout
The number of inactive seconds on a reserved connection before WebLogic Server reclaims the connection and releases it back into the connection pool.
You can use the Inactive Connection Timeout feature to reclaim leaked connections - connections that were not explicitly closed by the application. Note that this feature is not intended to be used in place of properly closing connections.
When set to 0, the feature is disabled.
MBean Attribute (Does not apply to application modules) :
JDBCConnectionPoolParamsBean.InactiveConnectionTimeoutSeconds
Minimum value: 0
Maximum value: 2147483647Yes!, they do not apply for any applications they are management interfaces, internal to weblogic.
Below is the brief information about it:
A managed bean (MBean) is a Java bean that provides a Java Management Extensions (JMX) interface. JMX is the J2EE solution for monitoring and managing resources on a network.
BEA WebLogic Server provides a set of MBeans that you can use to configure, monitor, and manage WebLogic Server resources through JMX. This reference document organizes WebLogic Server MBeans into the following categories:
MBeanServer Services, which serve as your entry point into navigating the MBean hierarchies. Some of these MBeans contain attributes and operations for managing changes to WebLogic Server configuration MBeans.
Configuration MBeans, which expose attributes and operations for configuring WebLogic Server resources.
Runtime MBeans, which provide information about the runtime state of its resources.
New MBeans, which have been added in the current release of WebLogic Server. These new MBeans are also listed in other categories in this document (for example, new runtime MBeans are also listed under the Runtime MBeans category).
Deprecated MBeans, which are deprecated in the current release of WebLogic Server. -
Windows Server 2012 R2 - ALL HF's Failing to install as "Does Not Apply to this computer"
Hi,
A general question about hot fix installs.
I have multiple servers that are all Windows 2012 R2. They do not have internet connections, so I have to install the Hotfixes manually. I download the HF's from the ISO download page (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/913086) every month. I collect them and install in a bulk install during a release cycle ( a couple times a year). I just realized that NO HF's have installed since JUNE 2014. Every HF that shows up in WindowsServer2012R2 directory fail to install with a message of "The update is not applicable to your computer". Which is fine if that was true, but.... I get this message for every HF from the ISO's since June 2014. NOT one HF thinks it is applicable to my computer. Could that be the case? No HF's apply to my Server 2012 systems since June of 2014?
This is my system info, and below that is the results from attempting to install 95 HF's.

Clicking a Paragraph Style Does Not Apply Style to Text
I just switched from a PC to a brand new MacBook Pro (OSX Lion 10.7), and I bought InDesign CS5.5. I have been using CS4 on a PC for a couple of years and had no issues. For some reason, I cannot apply Paragraph Styles by placing my cursor in the text and clicking the Paragraph style. It highlights the clicked style for a moment, and then de-highlights all the styles, but does not apply any changes. The only way I can apply a Paragraph Style right now is by right clicking the style and selecting "Apply..." from the drop down menu. It's very puzzling. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this. I also have Microsoft Office: Mac 2011 installed on the laptop if that makes a difference to anyone. Any help would be greatly appreciated, since I typeset and edit for my living, and this problem is slowing me down a bit.
Neither. Let's say I click into a paragraph. The current style will be highlighted. If I click on another style (or even attempt to re-apply the same style by clicking on it in the styles pane), it momentarily highlights the new style, then flashes a little bar underneath (like the one that shows up if I were to try to re-organize the styles list by dragging a style to a different pace in the styles list), then all the styles become unselected, but no changes have been applied to the paragraph in question. Very definitely not normal. It is almost as if the pane assumes that I am attempting to drag the style even when I am merely clicking on it. Very weird.

Hi
I'm trying to design a website using HTML and CSS. I have done the basic layout of the website using Div tags. However, the middle column of the website is showing up differently in Dreamweaver compared to on a browser.
I have researched the problem and found that it is caused by an error occuring on the middle column and the wrapper tag not applying to it: "x does not apply to your selection because it is not inherited. It is applied to an enclosing tag".
The code for my web page is here:

This is my CSS styles code:

Any help would be appreciated.
CheersThis tells me you have unbalanced opening and closing <div> tags somewhere in your document.

What is the HP Digital Imaging Monitor? Does it apply to my OS, Windows 7?
What is the HP Digital Imaging Monitor? Does it apply to my OS, Windows 7? I want to delete the icon from the task tray (tool bar in lower right hand corner of screen) as I never use it.
This question was solved.
View Solution.Hi,
Digital imaging monitor is a part of the HP software that communicates with your HP printer. This program enables you to read the inklevels, get an out of paper message, scan from the unit to the comuter and so on. Its not neccesary, but it will limit the printers use if you remove it.
Say "Thanks" by clicking the Kudos Star in the post that helped you.
Although I work for HP my posts and replies are my own

I am trying to use the brightness adjustment on a grayscale photoshop CS6 file. The preview shows the adjustment working and changes the brightness, but when you click to apply the change, it does not apply the adjustment. I have run into this problem before, although rarely, with some other files over the years and with earlier versions of CS. I would like to know how to overcome this problem?
Make sure you are viewing your image at 100%. At smaller views, pixels and layers and the way they interact are approximate interpolations and won't show you the actual pixel-for-pixel changes.

New Secondary and Higher education Cess does not apply to all business!?
Hi,
I know that for New Secondary and Higher education Cess we need to apply OSS Note (1032554 - Secondary and Higher Education Cess on Income Tax) as per the new legal change in India, an additional surcharge has been introduced for purposes of the Union, to be called the #Secondary and Higher Education Cess on income-tax#, calculated at the rate of one per cent.
I think this new cess is applicable across all industries. But, got feed back from client (project) that it does not apply to their business (Import and Trading) and this new cess can be rejected during passing the budget as bill.
Could you let me know reasonable justification to implement this oss notes?
Thanks in advance
S.Hi,
Please go thru the following link specially the clause 129. May be helpful. It speaks of imports.

I have been hearing about the "heartbleed vulnerability" and told to change all my passwords. Does this apply to Macs? I thought they could not get viruses and this was one of the reasons I got one.

Apple care plan does it apply to GCC ?
Apple care plan does it apply to GCC all countries?
These forums have a wide international audience and TLAs are troublesome.
TLA=Three Letter Acronym. You need to spell it out.
To Me, GCC is the compiler at the heart of all unix systems. It is Open Source. Support would come from the Developer forum here, or by filing a Bug Report through develeoper tech support. -
If I buy a iPad 2 in USA, will it work in the UK? If so, does this apply to both the wi-fi
It will work in the UK, though you will need a plug adapter for the charger (you don't need a convertor for the charger).
If you get a 3G version then get the AT&T version as they use micro-sim cards, so you can swap in a UK micro-sim card. The Verizon iPad is CDMA based and doesn't use micro-sim cards, so from a built-in 3G point of view isn't much use in the UK (I'm not aware of any CDMA carriers in Europe).
