Does provisioning an iPhone for development affect its stability?

Hello,
I'm about to buy an iPhone for personal use, and will also be doing some iPhone development. Is it advisable to provision a "personal" iPhone for development, or does downloading and testing apps present a risk of interfering with the phone's operation?
Thanks in advance,
-M

You can run apps being developed on an iPhone via the iPhone simulator included with the SDK, but this doesn't allow for an app being developed to be installed and run directly on an iPhone unless you apply and are approved for the iPhone Developer Program. All that apply are not approved.

To test your code directly on iPhone and distribute your mobile application, apply to the iPhone Developer Program.

    With normal use, no.
Don't subject it to abnormal amounts of pressure and you'll be fine.

  • Do I need a separate iPhone for development?

    Hello fellow developers,
I'm excited that I'm finally accepted to the dev program so I can test my app on my iPhone. Before I start testing, I have a couple of questions though. Do I need a dedicated iPhone device for the development? or is it possible to use my only iPhone for both development and personal use?
Another question is, I've read that I need to install an iPhone OS on my device. Given that I have updated my iPhone today with the latest official 2.0 firmware, do I still need to install another binary for the development?
    Cheers,
    Jake

    1) I use my iPhone both for development and personal use. The last few beta updates have been pretty stable so personal use is possible and is not as annoying as it used to be. However, you should expect some performance issues (mostly due to extensive logging and probable debug builds) and unexpected crashes since the releases were still beta (point 2 might affect this).
    2) I haven't been able to update my iPhone to the latest gold master v2.0 of the iPhone firmware yet. Since I already have v2.0 beta 8 installed, iTunes doesn't seem to be able to distinguish between the two versions. According to the information available on the development portals, we should be able to use the GM firmware for development purposes, which imho would be awesome!

  • Do you use two iPhones for developing?

One iPhone as a consumer device and the other purely for development. I'd think two iPhones gets expensive though. But if you use one, that's a big hassle and risk. Just wondering what the nornal methods are. Thanks.

Can't afford too but in reality I ought too. Apple should allow developers to buy carrier free iPhones purely for development.
    Android are doing this....

  • Installing OS X iPhone for developing, necessary? If so where to download?

    According to documentation here:
    http://developer.apple.com/iphone/manage/devices/howto.action
It says "To run your code on an Apple device, you will need to install OS X iPhone onto each development device and "restore" each device to a development state."
"1 Download the OS X iPhone Disk Image (.dmg) from the iPhone Dev Center for the Apple device you are using.
2 Connect your device to your Mac, close iTunes and launch Xcode.
3 Once the device is detected by Xcode, select ‘Use for Development’ when prompted."
My questions are is this step necessary? If so, where can I download the OS X iPhone that is supposed to be available at the iPhone Dev Center?
    Thanks,
    Fred

So after some more experimentation, I did discover that the the iPhone 2.0 software is installed automatically through iTunes. This step is not required. The problem I was having after a fresh install of the latest iPhone SDK (and uninstalled via the scripts included in Beta SDK's) was the following message after setting up all my signatures in KeyChain:
"Your mobile device has encountered an unexpected error (0xE8000001) during the install phase: Verifying application"
I found that the way to fix this is right-clicking on the Targets->MyApplicationName and then in the Properties dialog setting the identifier for my App Id associated with my Provisioning Profile.
    Hope that helps someone

  • Does apple replace iphone for missing buttons??

I was wondering, my friends iPhone 3gs his volume control button fell off and he is still under the apple care plan does apple replace the phone for missing buttons? other than that the phone is in pretty good condition as far as i can tell...

If Apple determines the missing buttons are not due to abuse, it will be replaced if still under warranty.

  • Iphone just for development (no service)?

Is it possible to buy an iphone without service, and then use that iphone for development?
Will an iphone without service still work with XCode to test apps?
Can you still update iphone OS (without service) when new OS versions are released?
Will an iphone without service still function like an ipod touch (everything works except phone stuff)?
What's the best way to buy an iphone without service? Should i just buy via AT&T and pay cancellation fee?

If you buy a first-generation iPhone used, you can connect it to your computer, provision it for development, and install the provisioning profile through Xcode. That will add a "Dismiss" button to all the "waiting for activation" dialogs so you effectively don't need to activate the phone. I did this with 2.0 for a few weeks, and there were a couple gotchas (make sure you don't leave airplane mode on when you upgrade the firmware!) but it worked pretty well overall. I ended up getting service for the phone before 2.1 came out, but I'm not aware of that having changed.
However, I've seen warnings in the development portal that this won't work with OS 2.2. I don't know if this is just during the beta or if the final version will behave this way too. There does seem to be a workaround right now, but they might close that loophole.
Do note that if you're in the U.S., you can get an original iPhone data plan if you're activating an EDGE iPhone. This will cost $10/month less than an iPhone 3G plan. If you talk with AT&T you might be able to make other arrangements (I think there's an even cheaper plan available for the deaf that doesn't include voice calls), but I don't know the details of any of that, nor do I know what may be available in other countries.
Honestly, though, your best bet if you're an individual developer might be to get a family plan and put both your regular phone and your development iPhone on it. One thing you'll need to test is how your app behaves when it's used during a phone call, and the only way to do that is to have an iPhone with phone service. Similarly, you'll need to test how usable your app is when it has little bandwidth or a poor connection or just in direct sunlight at midday, and having EDGE access will help you with that. If your product is even marginally successful, the service will pay for itself.

  • Does apple replace battery for iphone 4 if its not under warranty?

does apply replace battery for iphone 4 if its not under warranty and the iphone is a different color?

    http://www.apple.com/batteries/replacements.html
    iPhone Owners
Your one-year warranty includes replacement coverage for a defective battery. You can extend your coverage to two years from the date of your iPhone purchase with the AppleCare Protection Plan for iPhone. During the plan’s coverage period, Apple will replace the battery if it drops below 50% of its original capacity. If it is out of warranty, Apple offers a battery replacement for $79, plus $6.95 shipping, subject to local tax. Apple disposes of your battery in an environmentally friendly manner.

  • [iPhone] How to delete Provisioning Profile, AppID (for device testing)

Hi, on the developer portal, I'd like to get rid of the appID and provisioning profile.
I have already deleted the certificate.
I had removed the profile from Xcode organizer and that also removed the profile from my iPhone.
However, http://developer.apple.com/iphone/manage/provisioningprofiles/index.action continues to list the profile. Its status is now marked as "Invalid" and clicking on the "Modify" button does nothing
Does anyone know how to remove the profile from my program-portal settings. I'm assuming the profile is invalid because I've deleted the certificate.
The ~/Library/MobileDevice/Provisioning Profiles directory is empty and I have no other subdirectories under ~/Library/MobileDevice. So I don't know where this profile is coming from
I'd also like to delete the appID. Does anyone know how to delete an appID
Btw I'm deleting all this because of the problem described in http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1735100

After I added a second provisioning profile, the http://developer.apple.com/iphone/manage/provisioningprofiles/index.action page gave me a button to delete the first profile.
So I was able to delete the first provisioning profile.
I haven't found any way to delete an App ID.
So for now, I'm just going to assume that Apple doesn't let developers remove any App IDs (even though it is the developers who create these App IDs)
However, aside from the unnecessary clutter, I'm not concerned about this limitation
was able to create a new App ID and I'm using the new AppID now.
I was able to fix the problem decsribed in http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1735100. I'll update that thread after a while.

  • I am suddenly unable to receive calls on my iPhone 4S.  Is it possible that the age of the phone will affect its ability to receive calls? HELP!

I am suddenly unable to receive calls on my iPhone 4S.
I have spent 2 hour-long sessions with technical support and although they were very nice, it is still not fixed.
When I try to call the phone from a land line, it doesn't ring AND it doesn't recognize that a call is coming in (no missed call) BUT if I leave a message, it records it.
Is it possible that the age of the phone will affect its ability to receive calls?
    HELP!

        MarketingMary,
I am truly sorry to hear that your are unable to receive calls on your device. Thank you tbo27 for providing great troubleshooting steps. Making sure call forwarding is not active by dial *73 is great. Have you already reset network settings also? http://vz.to/RTz70g Are you able to make calls fine? Make sure Do not Disturb is not active. Settings>Do Not Disturb

  • Step-by-Step guide for developing a ADF application, does it exist?

Step-by-Step guide for developing a ADF application, does it exist?
    Hi there,
At our company we recently begun working on a project using Oracle ADF with
UIX. We got the Oracle JDeveloper 10g handbook and we did a 5 day Oracle ADF
course. A good way to start the project I think.
One thing that bothers me though, is that I cannot find a simple clean example
how to manipulate a record in the DB, going through all steps of MVC. I tried
this forum, the books we got and google. It usualy explains a small portion
of the steps needed, but never a complete example.
I know people will probably say you can design what you want in various ways
and that's its all up to the developer, this is also the power of ADF that it
    can be very flexible.
However it would be nice to have a step-by-step example how to be able to insert,
edit and delete a record. Showing all the steps that have to be made in the BC4J,
struts and UIX, including creating triggers, seq, autocommitting etc.
I think ADF is pretty complicated, therefore having a step-by-step example guide
(design pattern) would be very handy for a beginner like me.
Do such guides exist, are there developers who created such a guide for themselves?
Would other developers find such a guide useful? I'm curious about everybody's
    opinion.
A good example of what I mean by guide can be found here

Have a look at the ADF Workshop - it doesn't use UIX rather it uses JSP but I think it will give you the basics.

Then have a look at the toy-store demo and the new ADF Case manual:

  • The version of iOS on does not match any of the versions of iOS supported for development with this installation of the iOS SDK

Getting this error message as of this morning: The version of iOS on “iPad” does not match any of the versions of iOS supported for development with this installation of the iOS SDK. Please restore the device to a version of the OS listed below, or update to the latest version of the iOS SDK. I've downloaded the latest SDK and gone through the usual turn off and turn on again for iPad and computer, removed and reinstalled the iPad from Organizer and have no idea how to make apps build now. I was prompted to update the iphone too but there's no way I'm updating it if this issue can't be resolved.

Okay these are the steps I took to solve the problem - they may not be the right ones for you but they've solved the problem and saved time hunting for some other solution. Firstly I changed my MAC system to Lion with the £20 download, then I deleted the old Xcode and installed the new version that is app based and doesn't support Snow Leopard, then all was well. I can now update my xcode via the app which is quicker and more logical and can update my iPhone rather than chug along avoiding updates as I need to update my existing apps on the app store and upload a new one.

  • Does the Wish List for iPhone/iPad/iPod show price drops?

Does the Wish List for iPhone/iPad/iPod show price drops? I assume it would show the new price in the Wish List but does it inform you if the price drops?

The apps which show on the file sharing section on your iPad when connected to your computer's iTunes, you have exactly the same apps installed on your iPhone - they are not separate iPad and iPhone apps that you have installed on your iPad/iPhone, and only the iPad version supports file sharing ?
For iBooks, that won't show, it doesn't support file sharing. You can add ibooks / epubs / PDFs to your computer's iTunes library (the iBooks app if you are using a Mac with OS X Mavericks on it) via File > Add To Library, and you sync them to a device via its Books tab :
If you want to copy them off the device to your computer's iTunes (to the iBooks app on Mavericks) then File > Devices > Transfer Purchases will copy them over (that will copy PDFs and epubs from the iBooks app on your device, not just ibooks).
