Does SQL Azure support XML index?

Hi
I read the doc link below that Azure supports selective XML index? Is that true? I couldn't find any other documentation. I know it previously didn't support full XML index or has this changed?
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/azure/dn387405.aspx
Does anyone know? Thanks,

Hi Jilim,
As Olaf said, the feature is not supported in current version of Azure SQL Database.
If you have any concern about this behavior, you can submit a feedback at
http://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/Feedback and hope it is resolved in the next release of service pack or product. Your feedback enables Microsoft to make software and services the best that they can be, Microsoft might consider to add this feature
in the following release after official confirmation.
Thank you for your understanding.

  • Does SQL Developer support OS Authentication?  Will it?

Does SQL Developer support OS Authentication connections? If not will it in the future?

Given this has the SQL Developer been changed to remove the requirement of adding a password for an OS authenticated account? These users also have the ability to access the DB via applications and the fact that they don't have to enter a password right now is ideal. I really don't want to have to add a password for them. Will this be changed within SQL Developer?

  • SQL Azure Support Team And Lack of Support.

    Hello,
I purchased an Azure Support Plan seeking help as a
Developer.  For more than two Month the Azure SQL Engineers failed to help me.
I wonder! Is my case beyond help or Politics and racism are involved.
    1-
My site has a political message. It is about launching a much needed political movement in the Middle-East. The Site invites people to register as members and hopefully bearers of this Political Call.
This Political Call is not to the comfort of some powerful groups that could be behind the lack of support that I am getting.
    Details of the case.
    2-
On my local machine, the process of posting a completed Registration Form is completed without any error and the data is stored on the local MS SQL.
    3-
When posting a completed form over the internet, however, one gets a blank page and the process of Registration is aborted.
    4-
The Connection String that connects my Asurewebsite to the already linked Azure SQL is not formed correctly, and so I believe.
    5-
I used “MSDeploy” to upload the site to the Azure Platform, “All the files and the MS SQL”.
On the Azure remote, I already linked an Azure SQL to my Website, 1gb and paying for it. This Azure SQL copied its schema and data from the MS SQL that “MSDeploy” uploaded.
On the Azure Platform, I can manually access my linked Azure SQL Database, edit its schema, as well as, the
listed data included during the process of uploading.
    6-
The Problem: The process of linking the Azure SQL to my site generated the required Connection
String on the remote, however, the Connection String of my Web.Config file on the remote still refers only to the uploaded MS SQL.
Believing that this could be the cause of aborting the registration process I decided, after many unsuccessful attempts to include the Azure generated Connection String to the Web.Config file, to seek the help of the Azure SQL Engineers by
purchasing an Azure Support Plan as a developer, more than 2 Month ago, and paying for it.
    7-
I submitted a Ticket, asking for help to connect My Azure Website to the already linked Azure SQL using the already generated Connection String.
Instead of focussing on the connection issue the MS Azure SQL Engineer kept asking me to read irrelevant, mutually referring
and retired articles including one that deals with how to connect to MS Server 2005.
Many emails were exchanged for about 4 weeks and absolutely there was no intention on focussing on the Azure SQL connection need.
    8-
Three weeks ago, I submitted another Ticket, voicing my displeasure of the treatment that I received.
However,  the second Support professional kept trying to pass me on to other people, departments and finally suggested to set up a Tele-conference that includes many participants. Believing that it is another way of avoid
the issue,  I insisted on only discussing my SQL connection need, but this insistence was completely ignored.   Details of the

  • Does SQL Azure charge cross region traffic cost?

Say, I have a SQL DB on West US, and have two cloud services, one hosted on West US and the other hosted on East US.
Assume two cloud service have exactly same read/write throughput on the DB, is the cost same? I am wondering, if East US service cost more since it need cross region traffic?

    Hi,
Is data transfer between Azure services located within the same region charged?
No. For example, an Azure SQL database in the same region will not have any additional data transfer costs.
Is data transfer between Azure services located in two regions charged?
Yes. Outbound data transfer is charged at the normal rate and inbound data transfer is free.

  • Does SQL Developer support a default Path to SQL scripts

    Just started using SQL Developer.
In the past, I created shortcuts on my PC desktop to run SQLPLUS to the different
    instances as follows:
    1. Create a shortcut to PLUS80W.exe
    2. Set the property "Start in" to a directory where the SQL scripts are located.
    3. Add the login/password@instance to the end of the shortcut.
In this way, ypu only needed to click on the shortcut to log into SQLPLUS and run your
    scripts via @script.sql etc.
Can you setup a default path to SQL scripts SQL Developer so that it can locate
the scripts on your PC ?

I did notice in version 13.43 that if you close SQL Developer with a SQL script open in the SQL Worksheet, when you startup SQL Developer the next time it automatically opens the file in the SQL Worksheet with no database connection. It also sets the default path for SQL scripts to be the directory where your open SQL file resides. If you right-click in the SQL Workshop and then click on "Open File" the directory defaults to the directory of the SQL file that is open.

Lucene.NET is a .NET implementation of the Lucene full-text search engine. This article describes how you can use Lucene.NET to index text data stored in Windows Azure SQL Database, and then perform searches against that data.
NOTE: This does not provide an integrated full-text search experience like the full-text search in SQL Server. Lucene.NET is an external process that is queried separately from SQL Database.
NOTE: This article relies on the Azure Library for Lucene.NET (https://azuredirectory.codeplex.com/

  • SQL Azure indexer support for Collection(Edm.String)

Is there a plan to support "Collection(Edm.String)
" with a SQL Azure indexer? Maybe via an XML type?
Unless I'm misunderstanding the supported types
    https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/azure/dn946880.aspx
It sort of fizzles out after "time, timespan" but I'm assuming it's Not Supported's all the way down

    http://feedback.azure.com/forums/263029-azure-search/suggestions/7189214-sql-azure-indexer-support-for-collection-edm-strin
Was going to start there but just wanted to vet that it indeed wasn't there.... I realize it's a bit awkward and anti - sql storing data like that in a column and will probably annoy DBAs.
Currently the data we'd use this for would be Customer phone numbers, addresses, VIN for vehicles, and some account numbers... So nothing super fancy...   Straight delimiters might get funky with addresses but maybe a standard backspace escape
sequence or letting user use ascii hexcode if the delimiter is in the text..
For now we already have a comma separated SearchText field we've indexed for use with FTS and I just pointed an Edm.string at that column in our DB and it seems to pick up all the comma separated elements... But I'm guessing it's not as efficient as if it
was stored in more specific collections.

  • Unable to rebuilding clustered index in SQL Azure

    Hi,
I'm trying to rebuild a clustered index in SQL Azure.  The table is quite large, and I'm attempting an offline rebuild using:
    ALTER INDEX PK_Asset ON dbo.Asset
    REBUILD
Unfortunately, I'm unable to complete this operation because the operation fails with a timeout.  I've tried it several times, but with no success.
The index fragmentation is estimated to be around 85%, so I'm quite keen to reduce this.
Does anyone have any tips for getting around this in SQL Azure?
    Thanks,
    Nick

I believe you must be getting these error messages while tyring this operation:
    Msg 40552, Level 20, State 1, Line 1
The session has been terminated because of excessive transaction log space usage. Try modifying fewer rows in a single transaction.
    Msg 0, Level 20, State 0, Line 0
A severe error occurred on the current command.  The results, if any, should be discarded.
Creating, rebuilding and dropping indexes could generate a lot of transaction log records and may hit this error msg on larger tables. You may be able to work around the issue by creating a new table with the desired index layout, and then move the data
in smaller chunks over to the new table. However in most cases, you can minimize transaction log space usage with index operations by using the ONLINE option with your statement. Specifying the ONLINE=ON with CREATE, ALTER and DROP INDEX operations change
the characteristics of the execution. Instead of a single large transaction, the operation is performed in multiple shorter transactions in the background without holding exclusive locks for extended periods of time on the rows. This both improves concurrency
during the execution of the operation, and it eases the transaction log space requirement for the operation. This can help you avoid the 40552 exception.
PS: The rebuild command using the ONOINE=ON may also fail if you have BLOB datatype colume (datatype like ttext, image, varchar(max), nvarchar(max), varbinary(max), xml, or large CLR type).
    HTH,
    Thanks and regards,

Synonyms have been provided to smooth the migration of legacy applications" (http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/appdev.102/b14259/whatsnew.htm#CHDCAICE)
Whether that is a default install option or one that requires selecting I can't say, but it is available without needing to additionally use the XDK. So odds are you can do whatever you need in PL/SQL using those DBMS_ packages (or XMLTYPE based variables if the need arises).

  • Why does a SQL Azure DACPAC upgrade (via a PowerShell script) consistently take 30min to complete

I created a PowerShell script to upgrade a SQL Azure instance with my latest DACPAC (taken from http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee634742.aspx).
What I have experienced when running my PowerShell script is that it consistently takes approximately 30min to execute. The script is idle for almost half an hour waiting on $dacstore.IncrementalUpgrade($dacName,
$dacType, $upgradeProperties) to return from execution and nothing is printed out on the PowerShell console window. Only right at the end of the half hour does the incremental update start spitting out console messages which inform me that
the upgrade is taking place (essentially it appears that the script has hung for 30min until it finally comes back alive and the script does this consistently every time).
Does it usually take this long for the IncrementalUpgrade to complete and is there supposed to be a 30min period of inactivity/waiting?
Note that I am running the PowerShell script from my local machine which is external to the Azure network.
Thanks for any insight you can give for this, I am hoping that I can reduce this incremental upgrade process to substantially less than 30hr so that my continuous integration build doesn't take so long.

According to Microsoft Support this is a known issue and will be fixed in SQL Server 2012 (code named Denali). Here are the details from Microsoft Support:
It’s a known issue that using SSMS 2008 or PowerShell to update DAC on SqlAzure is very slow. SQLServer 2008 utilize old extraction engine which run query for every column and small object. This way works well at on-premise server, and meets
SQLServer 2008 original design target. However, when managing the SqlAzure database, the query need be transferred over internet, network latency makes the old extraction becomes inefficient, especially, when network is not good.
Our SQL product team aware this issue and designed new extraction engine to fix it. The new engine is integrated in SQL Server 2012 (code name Denali). Unfortunately, some of the engine behavior may bring break changes to SQL Server 2008. We try
different approach but we can’t relief regression barrier when apply the new engine in the SQL server 2008. Therefore, we don’t have plan to deliver the new extraction engine as hotfix on SQLServer 2008 so far. That will impact the current on-premise
    users and operation.

  • Does Azure supports switching between databases?

We have 1000s of Stored Procedures, Views & Functions with 'SELECT * FROM DB1.dbo.TBL1' we constantly switch between databases (about 300 of them) within a single instance, running real-time on-line business. These are back-end SQL queries that
we normally run from one of the ADMIN databases with in the same instance.
I tried using 'USE <database name>' and realized that it does not support and then tried using <db name>.dbo.<tbl name> that also does not work.
If these 2 functions does not support within Azure we simply cannot use the environment to support our business databases, could someone please confirm this - thanks.

    Hello,
Yes. Cross database references or four-part names are not supported by SQL Azure.
Windows Azure SQL Database supports the three-part name database_name.[schema_name].object_name when:
    • the database_name is the current database
    • the database_name is tempdb and the object_name starts with #.
