Does the 160GB & Hard drives have 16mb or 8mb cache?

Hi everyone,
I'm planning on buying a Mac Pro tommorrow with either a 160Gb or 250gb. Does anyone know if they are 16mb or 8mb cache?
Ideally i would like to buy a config with 160GB and then I will buy another 160GB and run them both in a raid config with Windows XP. I have an extra 320GB barracuda that i would like to use just for OS X. Does this sound like a good plan?
Any advice is appreciated,
Thanks
terry

True, but for RAID-0 (which doesn't attempt any error recovery) it would still be beneficial. The main difference between desktop and nearline SATA drives is reliability, which makes RAID-0 a risk worth taking, depending on your circumstances.
The 600k hours (or so) MTBF for desktop drives is given for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week light single user duty, while the 1.2M hours MTBF of the RE2, Barracuda ES, MaxLine... are for 24x7 light to medium duty. (High duty cycle is still reserved for SCSI drives, apparently.)
I was about to ask about the model numbers of the drives Apple ship with the Mac Pro, but from the discussions here it seems they're desktop drives. Hence I'll stick to my plan to order the Mac Pro with a 160GB drive and get two 500GB RE2 drives for a RAID-0 single volume config. I may add another 500GB drive for D2D backup (esp. in view of Leopard

Are you saying that Yos/10.10, as a volume located in a mounted external drive won't appear as an option in Snow Leopard's Startup Disc, in Sys Prefs? I've never heard this one before. AFAIK any mounted volume, regardless of OS, should appear there. I would think that, if it appears in the Boot Picker/Startup Manager it would also appear and could be booted to from Snow's Startup Disk. I can't test this myself, since I don't have Yos. Is what you are saying documented somewhere?

  • Does my external hard drive have to be always connected to my Mac for T.M?

    Hi there,
I have a MacBook and I back up my files onto a external hard drive using Time Machine, but when I come to back it up a second time it always say's failed so I have to reformat it and start all over. I was wondering if it needs to be constantly connected for it to work? If that's the case I might as well get a time capsule and do it wirelessly. I would keep it connected if I didn't have to move it.
Thanks guys for your time and for your comments in advance.
    David.

    No.
When the backup finishes, are you ejecting the drive before disconnecting it? If so, that's the problem -- OSX can't "close out" the disk properly, so the file system on it gets corrupted.
If not, A clue may be lurking in your logs. Click here to download the +Time Machine Buddy+ widget. It shows the messages from your logs for one TM backup run at a time, in a small window. Navigate to the backup in question, then copy and post all the messages for that run here.

  • Does an external hard drive have to stay plugged in with Time Machine?

I have an external hard drive but I do not always leave it plugged in.  I usually back up my computer every week or so and am just now getting around to using Time Machine. If i plug in my external hard drive and press "Back up now" will Time machine back up my entire computer again or just what has been updated? Do I have to leave the slider for Time Machine in the On position or should I turn it off until the next time I plug it in?
    Thanks

Only if you want it to continue backing up the computer. If you eject it Time Machine will suspend backups. Time Machine will reinitiate backups when the drive is reconnected.
If nothing has changed, the selecting Back up Now will not create a completely new backup.

  • I was running Firefox on another computer that lost it's motherboard, was able to salvage the harddrive, but my mail files on the older hard drive have a different name, how can I pull or import those older files into firefox running on another computer?

I had been running other email clients for years and finally switched to Firefox. All the while importing my other email folders. So I had quite a large history of email. I had been backing up my system using Acronis for years. My desktop's motherboard crashed and was not worth repairing. I pulled my desktop hard drive and turned it in a standalone drive. I re-established my email on a laptop starting from scratch using Firefox. I would like to import (if possible) the emails history that is stored on the standalone drive (formerly my old hard drive). However, the names of the mail folders on the drives are different. For example: current computer the mail folder is named garlic.com. On the standalone drive (old hard drive) there are several folders and they are named, for instance; mail.garlic.com, mail.garlic-1.com , and so forth. it goes up through garlic-4.com.
How can I pull or import these older folders into my current email folder and see all my old email archives?

You are not going to be able to run your old system from the backup on this old computer as the hardware is incompatible.
You need to get a new computer or a refurbished one.

  • Windows not detecting X-FI Fatality, does the I/O drive have to be install

Hi. Just received my Fatality card and have installed it but the new hardware is not being detected.
I have uninstaleld my previous audigy 4, when I restarted my comp the add new hardware waizard popped up but I cancelled it as I didnt want to install the audigy 4 again. I turned my comp off.
I installed the X-FI, booted up into windows, nothing. Restarted, nothing. Removed the card, tried a second pci slot, got a nice thunk when the card was inserted, booted up comp into windows, still nothing. No sound, no new hardware. Just the desktop.
I really dont want to install the i/o dri've that came with it for 2 reasons
. I dont need it and wont use it.
    2. I dont feel technical enough to do it.
Is the card dead or does the dri've need to be instaleld too?

The I/O bay isnt needed for the card to function, you just lose some connectors if you don't use the bay is all. Did you do a complete uninstall of the A4 card? You might want to give this a read http://ask.americas.creative.com/wwe...tall_audio.htm to see if you missed something. Its always possible you got a defecti've card. Do you have another box you can try the card in, that would be the fastest way to tell if your card is defecti've. Just an FYI in case you didnt know, you do not have to connect pwr to the card, only to the bay if you use it.

  • What is the best hard drive configuration for disk/media cache?

I just installed a 480 GB PCI SSD for my boot drive. I also have a 240 GB SSD and a 1TB 7200 rpm hd. Can anyone suggest on which drives to place my source files, aep files, media and disk cache and output for the best read/write speed? Thanks for any advice. I just had to reformat the external hard drive that houses my iPhoto library, then restore it from a backup. Now Time Machine is telling me my backup hard drive suddenly does not have the space to complete a backup. I also noticed when I go in to Time Machine, there are only about 5 backups recorded on the ext. hard drive. There were many more before. Any idea what happened and if I have to buy a new back up hard drive?

    Hallo  Kieth ,
I am not quite ready to restore the full iphoto library , as I have days of work re - imputting titles, descriptions and enhancement . I hope that your suggestion works , as I use my Macbook basically to work with digital photography. Through time , I will need to delete my library to recover more disc space and I would hate to have to spend more time re - imputting titles and descriptions all over again .
Thanks for your interest and advice.

my hard drive crashed on my MacBook Pro crashed and I need to get my CS5 up and running on the new hard drive. I copied what I could onto an external hard drive but when I drag and drop I get directions to uninstall but the uninstall folder I have does says it is an alias that is no longer present. I get error 6. I would like to get my software up and running on the laptop again please

If you subscribed to iTunes match the songs are kept in icloud. If you didn't but you did save the actual iTunes library folder which should include the music, video, etc.  you should be able to just drag this file back to your machine in the same place and when you open iTunes it will give you a chance to identify the iTunes library folder.
You can test this to find out if you saved the media files or not and don't need to attach your nano to do it.
You are correct that once you connect the nano it will clear the existing files from it and sync it with the new iTunes library.
If you don't have the media files i'm not sure if/how to get them back on a windows ipod.  I have everything backed up regularly because of the horror stories I have seen & heard.

And why not? Apple is selling these things like BigMacs. They can't make enough of them. You've been suffering since May because you refuse to get a decent router.
Can you imagine if a company that makes a refrigerator told me that I needed to upgrade my electrical system to rectify a problem with their device? What kind of response IS that?!?!
What if the problem with their device is that it requires a new-fangled "grounded" outlet and your circa 1890 house doesn't have grounded outlets. Would you refuse to purchase a $ 25 adapter on principle?

Depends on where you got it - if it came on yoru compujter then you need to have accepeted it in the App store - and it will be in your purchases when you log in with the Apple ID that you used to set up your computer - it mahy be hidden - if you do not find it unhide applications in teh App store

  • Hello, I have a G5 PPC. I want to install a copy of Entourage on the second hard drive. Can I do that or will it create problems for the processor?

    Hi everyone
I had a very old intel iMac from late 2006 which was dying now dead. I just managed to copy the Entourage folder onto an external hard drive before the iMac gave up the ghost. But I could not open the Entourage copy on the G5 PPC. each time i tried to do so the PPC copy of Entourage would open instead.I have emails on the PPC copy and do not want to lose them. I was wondering if it would be possible to install another copy of Entourage on the second hard drive? I was hoping that by doing that I could access the information from the iMac which has been copied to an external hard drive.
Any help would be very very welcome.

I don't think MS lets you install Entourage outside of an active system folder. However, you can install a fresh copy of Entourage on the G5's hard drive (if you have Office 2008 or lower), then use Entrouge's Import command to move the data files from the old hard drive.
We're done this several times as we've upgraded either computers or Entourage.
However, I think that, before you act, you should also ask in Microsoft's user forums here:
    Office for Mac forums
They are excellent and often an employee of their Macintosh unit will assist in answering.

  • Do all Macbook Pro hard drives have the apple sign on them?

    Hi there,
November 2012 I bought a new Macbook Pro because my old one had beer spilled on it. I decided since I was getting a new computer I might as well as upgrade my hard drive. I bought a Seagate Momentous SSHD 750 GB. It is a hybird drive between SSD and HDD. I got my computer running on it with little effort and things were going well. 2 days ago My computer froze, which does not happen often. I held down the power button until the Macbok turned off. When I turned it back on it took me to recovery mode where I can pick between disc utility and reinstall the Operating System. I went into disc utility to verify and repair my hard drive. There were no issues. I decided re just restart my computer and move on.
When I restarted a second time it took me back to recovery mode with out me doing the *command R* prompt. I checked my disc again and this time it said that I needed to reformat my hard drive. I tried to back up all my data however every tool I used was unable to saying the HD was not accessible. I erased the hard drive and tried to do a clean reinstall of the OS. I was unable to do so. The computer just keep going into an infinite loop when downloading the OS. It would get down to 8 minutes remaining and then jump magically back to 1 hour 45 minutes. After about 8 hours of letting it do that I canceled the process.
I took the computer to a Mac Store and the guy there told me that because the hard drive was "third party" and not from apple, that Intel Macs running 1.8 had trouble talking to the firmware of those hard drives. I found this to be confusing because the hard drive worked well for 4 months with no issues. Also, I am not sure what he meant by third party seeing as apple does not make hard drives. He explained to me that "typically" the only hard drives I can use are the ones that have the apple sign on the label. They said that they could not honor my warranty because I didn't have the original hard drive with me. Once I get the original hard drive then they would fix it.
My question however now is if it is really true that only apple labeled hard drives are the only ones that will work with my Mac Book Pro. The apple store wanted 220 euros for a new 500 GB hard drive plus another 80 euros for labor. I am fully capable of installing a hard drive and I am a cheap student. I don't want to pay that kind of cash. I have looked online and there are several retailers who claim to be selling Mac Book Pro hard drives however the images do not contain an apple label. I am not sure if I am understanding the label thing correctly, the Apple guy were speaking German and English is my first language.
I appreciate any help and advice!

I have performed verify and repair on the hard drive from the disc utility and everything checks out on the hard drive. I am not getting any error messages. I am unable to load my operating system back on it however. Last night I finally was able to get past the download portion of the OS install and it restarted and brought me to a screen that shows it installing the OS. It never loads on the progress bar however. To me it seems as thought the hard drive is having trouble writing any data to itself. What do you think? I am not getting any clicks from the hard drive like it is struggling,  I am not seeing any physical damage to the hard drive and disc utility says it checks out.  Thank you for your help!
