Does the ARRIS TG862 provide time machine support?

I am trying to see if I can get rid of my airport extreme (4th gen) and just use the comcast provided Arris TG862 modem/router. I use VOIP and Time machine but through the Airport Extreme.
Any help is appreciated,
Thanks,
-Scott

The first question would be whether the Arris TG862 provides a USB port for a shared network hard drive......which, based on the limited amount of online information available.....it does not appear to do.
If you have the 862 handy, you could perform a quick check.
I am not sure how VOIP would tie into the Arris product....or the AirPort Exteme for that matter, so can't help on that one.

  • Does the new Aperture use Time Machine at all?

One thing about Aperture 2 that bugged me was that the library is automatically excluded from Time Machine. In iPhoto, you can recover a photo or bring back a previous version with Time Machine, but this does not seem possible with Aperture. Does the new version of Aperture take advantage of this at all?

Mine isn't. I just started using Aperture 2 about 3 weeks ago, and it has been backed up by TM ever since.

I have 2 MacBooks (1 Air and 1 Pro) at home that back-up to a Time Capsule.  I'd like to buy an external Thunderbolt drive at work to have as an additional back-up (so that were there to be a fire/water damage/etc) I would not lose both the computer and the backup.
Will Time-Machine support autobackups to 2 different devices?
I'd like for it to be able to backup to an external Thunderbolt drive attached to my thunderbolt display when I dock the MacBook Air to it.
Does anyone know if this will occur automatically, or if I will have to manually select backup disk?
    thanks

Yes, with Mountain Lion you can do this, but I will leave the explanation to Apple Support Communities contributor Pondini:

  • Pondini, I beseech thee....Time Machine won't back up external drive partitions

Pondini (or anyone else that would like to help),
I am running Mac OS X 10.7.5. At my edit bay, we utilize a Facilis Terrablock 24D for storage, which connects to our system via fibre cables. Before upgrading to 10.7.5, Time Machine would back up all of our drive partitions on the Terrablock. Since the upgrade, Time Machine still recognizes the drives, we can add or subtract files from the drives, and it appears to make and save the changes, but when Time Machine backs up, it will only back up the local hard drive. No error messages come up. It just does its thing but only for the local HD.
All of the drive partitions are Mac OS Extended Journaled. All of the permissions seem to be in order.
I have contacted Facilis and their technical support claims that they never tested their products with Time Machine (as they sell their own backup equipment) but in theory that it should work.
I'm not sure what other information you might need but please let me know and I'll do my best. I was wondering if anyone else has come across an issue like this? Thank you for your time.

Upon including this partition and all of its contents, it disappears from the exclusion list as it should AND its size is reflected in the Estimated size of full backup. But this is the kicker! Upon clicking "Save" and starting Time Machine's backup, I receive the error "Time Machine could not complete the backup. There are no disks available to be backed up." Upon going back into TM Preferences > Options, I find that the external drive / partition has been put back on the Exclusion list. It's like it is automatically rejecting the partition after I have saved my exclusion list.
    That's quite strange.
TM does that if you try to back up a USB Thumb drive (I've filed a bug report), but this is the first I've heard of it under any other circumstances.  Then again, I don't recall a post by anyone trying to back up from a drive connected this way.
If a drive isn't formatted for a Mac (ie, FAT32, ExFat, NTFS, etc), Time Machine cannot back it up, and will list it in gray on the exclusion list (same as the backup drive), and won't let you remove it from the list, so it's clear.
This sounds like a "cousin" of the way it treats a thumb drive, so sure seems like a bug.  TM will back up USB, FireWire, and Thunderbolt drives without a problem, if they're formatted right.
If you have any Macs under 90 days old, or covered by AppleCare, a call to them is free, and the best way to get a quick answer (you may have to escalate to a "specialist" however, and it still may take a few days for something unusual).  Otherwise it's $50 U.S.
An alternative is to file a Bug Report, per the green box in Reporting a Problem to Apple.   That most likely won't get a response for quite a while, though.
Sorry, wish I had a fix!
Let us know what, if anything, you find out.

  • How to reset the location of a Time Machine taken to a different time zone?

I have recently moved my Time machine to a different country and time zone. I have reset the whole thing, entered the right time zone in the manual set up, but it still displays the old location when automatically searching for time zone. Also, when using an iPod Touch and Google earth or Maps, it shows the old location as the current one. How do I reset the location on my Time Machine to match the current one?

+I had done that and it does show the correct time on my machine. My question however was about the location setting and it displays my former address and not the current one.+
There are only two settings on the Time Capsule related to location and time.
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Time Capsule tab below the row of icons and you will see time settings and time zone settings
Then click the Wireless tab and then click Wireless Network Options to see the settings for Country location.

  • How do I limit the amount of space Time Machine uses?

Right, so the drive I was using for Time Machine had a most lovely volume failure. Somehow, I managed to fix it. The drive itself is fine but I find this all out after I buy a Drobo to replace it with (plenty of other of reasons for buying it, so it's OK).
Anyway, I've transitioned all of my files onto the Drobo and now want to use part of it for Time Machine. However, there's a snag. There are only two ways I know to do this:
    1. Partition part of the drive and tell Time Machine to use that. Would work except the guys behind the Drobo specifically say "Don't use your Drobo with Disk Utility. It'll just mess thing sup." So partitioning is out of the question.
    2. Time Tamer, a handy little script that does some magic and gives me a Sparse Bundle to use for Time Machine that is twice the size of my internal drive. That would work great. Except I only want it to be 1 TB instead of 2 TBs. I never even come close to filling the drive itself and the last Time Machine backup I had was only 1 TB and I had yet to even fill that after... Oh... Six months or so.
I'm sure there's a way for me to do number two manually but I have no idea how. I'd really apprecaite it if someone could point me in the right direction. Google isn't helping.

You cannot limit what TM uses on the drive. You can partition the drive and assign a specific partition as the TM backup drive. If you do this then be sure that partition is at least twice the capacity of the drive it backs up.
You don't pre-size a sparsebundle. It simply expands or contracts as needed. Given sufficient time TM will fill up any drive.
If your Drobo consists of RAIDed drives, then you cannot partition it. If it comes as two separate drives, then use one for backup.

I have bought a WD My Book World Edition to use for back-up of my iMac, but when I try and log onto the drive with Apple time Machine (back-up software) or connect in any other way I get the message 'There was a problem connecting to the server "MybookWorld.local" The version of the server you are trying to connect to is not supported. Any ideas on how to solve would be gratefully received?

Followed the directions on this page and it worked!
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1102423
Part One - Turn on SSH (in the admin panel)
    [1] Go to to http://mybookworld.local
[2] login: username will be admin, password will be whatever you have setup. If you can't remember it should be in your Mac OS X keychain (Utilities > Keychain Access, search for "mybookworld"). If you have not changed if from the default the password will be admin as well.
    [3] Switch to advanced mode.
[4] From the System tab, pick Advanced.
[5] Enable SSH Access, and click submit.
[6] Click on the network tab and then the LAN button
[7] Make a note of the IP address
Small, maybe obvious, but nevertheless important point: For the install to work, your NAS needs to be connected to a router with internet access.
    Part Two - Install netatalk2.2
    [8] Open Terminal.app (Utilities > Terminal)
[9] Enter the following command (substitute in 127.0.0.1 for the actual IP address you noted down in step 7), then hit return:
    Code:
    ssh [email protected]
[10] When prompted, enter the ssh password (will be welc0me).
[11] You are now going to download the installer. Enter the following command, then hit return:
    Code:
    wget http://mybookworld.wikidot.com/local--files/netatalk2-2-on-whitelight/install_netatalk.sh -O install_netatalk.sh
[12] Once completed, you will need to run the installer. Type:
    Code:
    sh install_netatalk.sh
[13] You will be asked a number of question during install, answer yes to all. When asked about the "DHX2 login process", I opted to install the modified version, so I can confirm it works.
[14] Once the box has restarted, you should be able to connect to your afp shares and continue to use Time Machine.

  • "The storge location for time machine backups can't be found"

I posted this on the TIme capsule forum and got no reply. PLEASE somebody, I need help with this.
Time machine on my new MBP (Leopard 10.5.2) is now failing on my new Time Capsule and I am unable to connect to my backups. Whenever I open Time Machine I get the error message: "The storge location for time machine backups can't be found"
I've tried rebooting, going into "Set up time machine" and changing the disk to none and then back to both the Time capsule Volume and the Time capsule backup volume (should there be 2?).
I AM able to open the Time Machine Drive through Finder.
Has there been a recent update which renders Time Machine useless?

I don't have an answer, but I get this error when I try to mount the sparcebundle to my hd to try to get Time Machine to mount as stated in this article http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1329.
I've had this problem before I upgraded to 10.5.3

  • I have an iMac OS X 10.6.8 and have problems with the backup Disk for Time Machine disconnecting itself with the message that I ejected it improperly.. It ejected itself - why?

I have an iMac OS X 10.6.8 and have problems with the backup drive to Time Machine ejecting itself and so does not automatically backup the way it is meant to do. It is connected with an USB cable to my iMac. What could cause this - malfuntioning drive?

The "iLife" apps are not part of any Mac operating system install and are a separate purchase.
Once you get past 10.6.6 you can purchase and download iPhoto, GarageBand and iMovie. iWeb and iDVD have been discontinued.
Snow Leopard 10.6.6 and higher include the App Store application which is what you use to purchase Lion.

  • Why does my preference pane for Time Machine on my Mac unlock every time I open it?

    Hi,
My MacBook Pro is a 2012 model, running on Mac OS X 10.8.3 Mountain Lion.
It is running on an OCZ Agility 4 SSD (which runs the TRIM command using the 'TRIM enabler' hack.) and has 16GB of RAM, powered by a 2.5Ghz dual core Intel Ivy Bridge Core i5.
I back up my Mac using Time Machine to a 500GB WD "My Passport" drive formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled), with a GUID partition map.
Every time I lock the preference pane for Time Machine in the System Preferences, the next time I open it, it is unlocked.
Is this a bug with OS X Mountain Lion, or could it be a hardware problem?
Does this happen to anyone else?
    Thanks.

    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Security & Privacy ▹ General
If there's a closed padlock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane, click it and authenticate to unlock the settings. Enter your login password when prompted.
Click the Advanced button and check the box marked
Require an administrator password to access locked preferences
in the sheet that drops down. Then click OK.

  • Does the Built-in Windows FTP Client Support a Secure Connection?

I have set up Server 2008 IIS w/ FTP. I set the SSL setting to require a secure connection. However, I can't connect to the FTP server from the built-in Windows FTP client. I CAN get it to work in FileZilla after modifying my connection properties.
Does the built-in Windows FTP client support secure connections? I received a request to set this up so our internal employees can share files with external customers. Many times our customers are unable to install any kind of third party software on their

  • HT201250 (1) Where is the "Time Machine menu" and the choice to "Enter Time Machine" (mentioned in the "Restoring data from Time Machine backups" section)?

    1) Where do I find the "Time Machine menu" and the choice to "Enter Time Machine" (as mentioned in the "Restoring data from Time Machine backups" section in the Mac Support article "Mac Basics: Time Machine")?
    2) How would I restore e.g. a particular photo from a backup I made with Time Machine? I can see how this is done with Word documents, but can't see how to do it with photos?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
    1. The Time Machine icon is on the menu bar.
    2. If you want to do that with individual photos, it's the same way as for documents. If you want to do it with iPhoto, you have to restore the whole iPhoto library, not only one photo

No. Time Machine does not work with "cloud" drives.
