Double space after apostrophe in iMessage

Ever since I updated to Mavericks, iMessage on my MacBook Pro (mid 2012) adds a double space after I use an apostrophe! It also doesn't save my background color preference (but it does save font color, font, and other user's font and color). It only shows up for me, not for the person I send the message to.
It looks like this:

Hi,
The Original Poster newer came back with any more info on the subject.
This also left her Balloon (or Background) colour unresolved as well.
In Messages 8 (Mavericks) the Smiley function now uses the Emoji font to create the Smilies.
In iChat versions and Messages 7 you could show the Smiley drop down and mousing over the Smilies would reveal the text keystrokes that would be needed to create it if typing them.
This does not happen with the Emoji Font.
However most of the icons are created by double character info which may mean a keystroke might just be invoking it.
Playing with these settings may provide something.

  • Spaces after apostrophe

Mail 8.0 ignore's the space after the letter following an apostrophe.  For example "it wasn'ta problem until recently"  I think this only appeared after updating to Yosemite but I'm not sure.  Only in Apple Mail, Microsoft Word is OK.

It shouldn't do it so something is wrong.
Have a look in the Preferences > Auto-correction if it is added that using the apostrophe generates also spaces.
You can create a new account and use PAges and see if the problem still exist. If not it is something in you first account. Delete the com.apple.iwork.pages.plist in User > Library > Preferences
May you've by mistake added it in the spelling list this "word".

  • Automatic Double-Space after inserting a character (eg. &)

    Hi,
I haven't had this problem previously, but recently whenever I type a bracket or 'and' symbol it automatically inserts a space after the space. For example...
"everything was great (Decker,2004)." as opposed to "everything was great (Decker,2004)."
How do I turn off this automatic double-space? I've looked everywhere, can't figure it out.
    Thanks

    Hi Laura,
The forum is working against you as well. The forums software strips out extra spaces in the display of a post, although it shows them in the compose window, which let me locate them. I replaced the pair with sticky spaces, so the line above (and below without the quotation formatting) should appear more as you typed it.
"everything was great  (Decker,2004)." as opposed to "everything was great (Decker,2004)."
The first place to check is Pages > Preferences > Auto Correction. Someone may have added this to the auto correction list. Unlikely, due to the number of steps that would have to be taken, but possible.

  • Unwanted space after apostrophe

I'm working on changing some text in a mockup that was created by someone else and it's doing something weird with apostrophes. Every time I put an apostrophe in the middle of a word, it adds an extra space width between the apostrophe and the next letter, like this: "you' ve" "y' ouve" "youv' e"
Here's the kicker, I can copy type from other documents with text that doesn't have that space, but any new type I try to create within this document does the same thing to apostrophes. If I copy the content into a new document, I can replace the text boxes and new text works fine, but is there any way I can fix this without having to copy everything over and replace every text box?

What happens if you copy all from the bad document, and paste this into a new .ai document?.
Would be interesting to find out exactly what is causing this. Fix one, and compare the expanded character, opentype, paragraph palettes (eg: language set to foreign, optical kerning on a strange font, justification) for any difference.
If justification is on check your setting as weird things happen if the letter spacing values are changed to negative values.
If you show invisibles, is there really an extra space there or does it kern adding extra space?

  • How do I double space a document using Pages There is NO Line Spacing control in the drop down menu in the format bar

How do I double space a document in Pages. The instruction say to use the Line Spacing control in the format bar, but there is NO Line Spacing control in the drop down menu under Format. I'm writing a novel and I am having to manually double space after every line. It is **** when I am trying to edit my work.

The computer is not too old (and neither are you ).   It may be better if you could upgrade it from 10.5.8 to 10.6 ... but that would not solve this problem.
As both Paul and I have advised ... get yourself on Pages > go to the View menu and halfway down is the option 'Show Inspector'.   You'll end up with a panel like Paul showed you in his post of 08:42.   Let's see what you can do from there.

  • Double space issue in word 2010

    Hi,
I am currently converting all my word 97 documents to word 2010.
I need to mail merge the document.
In the development mode of word the double space is present after period (Full stop).
After generating the document through application , the double space is not appearing.
    Eg.,.
    Before : to.  But
    After Generating: to.But
    Thanks.

    Hi Pradeep,
I am wondering whether you could reproduce your issue manually. If it also occurs when you manually generate, it seems to be a product related issue. If it works correctly when you manually generate, but not correctly in your development, I recommend you
share more details about your program and it would be helpful if you could share us a simple demo to reproduce your issue.
If your issue is a product related issue, I would recommend go to the link below for help:

  • How to double space in Mail?

How does one double-space in Mail? If copy double-spaced text and paste in Mail email, it comes out as single spaced.

After much trial and error I found one solution. In the document file, clear all styles formatting. Then format the text again but do not assign it a style. Leave it as "normal" with your manual formatting. Then when you copy and paste the formatting is maintained in Mail. It seems to be that the assigned styles in the Word file (or Pages) is causing the problem.

  • Control space after the Drop Cap

    ID3, XP
We character style drop caps. When the DC is a single character, we use the tracking in the character style to add space to the right of the dropped character. However, this method cannot be used when it is a two character drop, in this case, chapter numbers are dropped 2 lines. We want to adjust the space between the dropped number and the start of text, and keep that space equal on both lines.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

The first issue is still that humbled wasn't able to add space after the drop caps and maintain alignment of the text. Bottom line is that  his method of using character spacing was a bad hack. I'm pointing out that the alternative solutions he tried (ex. post #4) didn't work because he wasn't using the correct value for the number of drop characters. And per his post #21, he is still assuming that 2 is the correct value to define a double digit drop cap. If he gets past that, solutions to other complications may come easier.<br /><br />In fact, unless he needs some specific sized space HIS WHOLE PROBLEM FROM START TO FINISH could be solved simply by selecting 3 as the number of characters for his drop caps rather than sticking with 2. That would have the effect of including the space after the chapter numbers as part of the drop cap making it larger and adding considerably more space.<br /><br />If he does need more space, then he is going to have to add another character. But that character still has to be included in the DC character count:<br /><br />12<space>Text (3 drop caps)<br />12<hardspace>Text (3 drop caps)<br />12<space><hardspace>Text (4 drop caps)<br /><br />He can even use a tab character for a specific indent if he wants. Just switch a tab for the hardspace above.<br /><br />P.S. The same logic holds true for in single drop caps. If you want extra space after, increase the drop cap count to 2 to include the space after.

  • Adding Space after ## in description

    Hi
I have a requirement where for example-
Text field has letter as ## in description -   material number is ##5This is ok.
I have to change the above description as- material number is ##  5This is ok.
That is if there is no space after ## , we have to add a space in the description.
Please provide me ABAP code for that.

  • How do i remove double space in messages?

All of my Mail using Apple Mail has double spaces in them how do I do I change to single-space?
    Sebastian

Yes. That is the technique I traditionally use to drop an image into text. I even cut and pasted again as you suggested with the same result. Trust me, this is driving me nuts. I'm not doing anything different than before, but my results are different, even within the same document. I'll attach a few examples, all from this same document.

    1. Please add to the gateway init file HS_NLS_NCHAR=UCS2
Then test again with a new SQL*Plus session.
When it continues to fail, what's the character set of the Oracle database being used and how did you set the NLS_LANG in your environment?

  • Can pages be set to full stop with a double space tap

    Hi,
Does anyone know if you can set pages (or use an app) to place a full spot after a double space bar tap?
    Thanks

In text replacement (System Preferences > Keyboard > Text), one cannot use a leading space in the Replace column, thus eliminating double-space as a character replacement combination. Depending on the internationality of your keyboard, there may be alternative tandem characters that when configured in the text replacement facility — will offer a full-stop as replacement.
I do not use third-party tools for text or keyboard mapping, so cannot comment on that viability for your goal.

  • Double commas, double spaces

(I conducted a search on "double commas" but found no answers to this vexing problem)
This is a funny one. Basically, if I'm typing at normal speeds, I sometimes see double commas and double spaces. It has nothing to do with my key repeat rate, and it's nothing to do with a specific program. To my recollection, it's happened for years, so it's not this OS X install, and it happens at work too. I thought I remembered reading once, long ago, that there was some System setting (might it be in Universal Access?) that would trigger this behavior, but I can find no reference to it now. This is what it looks like:
"If I'm typing at normal speeds, ,I get a lot of double commas. And double spaces."
That is, a comma, a space, and another comma before the next word. The commas are never right next to each other, and to test this I've tried to do the same thing manually, intentionally, but it's actually quite difficult! So I don't think it's my fingers slipping.
Anyway, this clearly isn't a show-stopper, but it's pesky. Clue?

I have a similar problem, where all punctuation (including spaces) double up, but only in certain applications: Safari, Adium (IM client) and Twitterific in particular. [So,, if I type a sentence,, it appears like this.. And a periods double up..] I have had this problem before, and and Archive and Install fixed it. This problem has appeared after an Archive and Install. However, I don't have the same problem in a newly created account. So, I guess the problem lies in something I have installed, perhaps a haxie.

Where would I modifiy my CSS to allow for the appearance of
