Downcoverting 16x9 to 4:3

When importing 16x9 material into my timeline....is there a way to OUTPUT it to a 4:3 movie..without it looking stretched?
To get around this...what I am doing now --is importing HD material into my projects bin and then dragging it to the timeline and NOT changing my 4:30 (SD) sequence settings.
I then take the video and stretch it out --so that there are no black bars at the top and bottom --thus creating a full frame video at 4:3...without any elongated video. Of course I lose some on the left and right--but this is better than losing proportion.
Is there a plugin that can automatically do this?? Or am I approaching this the best way...?
Thanks!
Michael

Is there a plugin that can automatically do this??
That I don"t know, but here's another way:
Resize the first clip using the controls under the Motion tab. Right click and copy that clip.
Switch to the Forward Select tool (has an arrow pointing right on it) and choose the one with two arrows pointing right. Click on the second clip. This will select everything apart from clip 1 which is already resized. Right click the second clip and choose "Paste Attributes". Click the Basic Motion checkbox and then on OK. Done.

  • Can you downcovert HDV footage to SD without camera?

    Hi,
I am editing an HDV project that I need to downconvert to SD for a DVD. The project was shot and edited in HDV.
What is the best, simplest way to downcovert my project to SD? Can I do it without the camera? Is it possible just to cut and paste the timeline into a DV timeline and then export?
I am new to downcoverting. Any suggestions would help.

In my HDV experience, I've found the best way to down
convert is to have the camera/deck do it. The
hardware conversion in the camera/deck provides the
best results, at least in the limited testing I've
done. So, export the finished project back out to the
camera, then set up the camera to export DV and set
FCP to a DV preset and recapture. I've found these
results to be better than SW solutions. However, I'm
assuming you still have access to the camera.
    This idea sounds good.
So basically you're saying I can print to video my finished product back to HDV tape. The import this as DV. Is it a setting on my camera? I assume so.
    I am seeing...
i.Link Conv - HDV to DV
    and
Down Convert - Sqeeze, Letter Box, Edge Crop
I want the 16x9 footage to the letter boxed to fit the 4x3 720x480 frame so I assuming i'll choose Letter Box.
I am brand new to this as you can tell so any help is appreciated, even if it seems understood and redundant.
    Thanks,

  • Need to convert 16X9 to 4:3 letterbox for DVD

    Hello
Can anyone tell me the settings I need to convert 16X9 to 4:3 letterbox for DVD. I am mixing other 4:3 letterbox content. Evertime I make an mpeg with Quicktime conversion it is squeezed. I want it to be letterbox in 4:3
    Thanks in advance.

In addition to using the advice above, make sure in Compressor (or other item you use to encode) that you are using the 16:9 encode ratio. If you are using QT conversion (which it sounds like from Final Cut?) also make sure that ratio is checked. Unlike a 4:3 m2v which will be 720 x 480 when you open it in QT, the 16:9 will be 720 x 404

  • Is there any way to export 2.35 Anamorphic source to a 16x9 letterboxed frame WITH timecode or text overlays?

I have been trying to export temp cuts of an anamorphic project (2.35:1) in a letterboxed 16:9 frame with timecode and text overlays and other Additional Video Effects. Converting the 2.35 to 16x9 has been a breeze with the Preserve Aspect Ratio option in Cropping & Padding . The problem is that the black bars that that puts in the 16:9 frame appear OVER any of the Additional Video Effects, thus covering them up.
E.g. if I select a Text Overlay and place it in the Center, I can see it just fine. But if I want it Upper Left, Title Safe, it is covered by the black space of the Letterboxing. So the Additional Video Effects are getting added, they are just getting covered by the letterboxing. You can even see the very edge of the text in the Title Safe position, peeking out from behind the letterboxing, which is, of course, frustrating .
Thus far it's been a two-step process: letterbox the anamorphic source, then add TC and other video effects in a second job.
So - is there any way to do this in ONE step? It would really help my anamorphic workflow.
    (apologies for the lengthy question.)
    [I'm using FCPX 10.1.3 & Compressor 4.1.3, in OSX 10.9.5 on Retina MBP, Late 2013, w/  NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB]

    Thanks for the reply Russ.
Yes, I've considered adding titles and/or generators in the FCPX storyline, but this creates a need to render the entire timeline. As I'm juggling library locations and hard drive spaces I just didn't want to add a new render that will occupy a lot of space. It's also a bit of visual clultter for me, so my goal is to find the best workflow for adding this stuff on or after export.

  • How to display a photo slideshow in Widescreen 16x9 format?

I just bought a 5g iPod and the A/V connection kit. I can play a photo slideshow on my 16x9 TV, but it stretches the photos to fit the screen, so they are out of proper aspect ratio. Is there a way to tell my iPod that it should be displaying the photos on a 16x9 screen?
I understand that there is a widescreen option in the Video playback menu, but this does not seem to have any effect on the output of photo slideshows.

    Jon,
See if this works. It may or may not.
    Go to videos-->video settings-->Widescreen-->On
See if now when you play the photo slideshow it works right.
Now, if it doesn't then I don't think there is much you can do.

  • Clue me in on working with 16x9 and it's various formats.

I finally decided to delve into the 16x9 formats that our camera has (DSR-450). I am NOT shooting HD, these are all in SD being recorded in DVCAM format. All formats actually record in 29.97.
We have the ability to choose:
    16x9 I Drop Frame
    16x9 24p 2.3 Pull Down Drop Frame
    16x9 24p 2.3.3.2 Pull Down Non-Drop Frame
    16x9 24p PsF No-pull DF
16x9 I is pretty self explanatory. FCP doesn't see it as such, but if I check off anamorphic, it's all good.
For the 24p 2.3 and 2.3.3.2 I know the pull down happens in teh camera as it goes to tape and they're really 29.97. When I bring them into FCP, should I leave them as 29.97 or should I pull them back up to 24p. Output will eventually end up in a 4x3 letterboxed format, but I'd like to know how to do a reverse pull-down jsut in case ... so How do I do it? Interestingly enough, for both of those formats FCP knows to make them anamorphic.
And Finally, 24p PsF. This format, I cannot grasp how it works, I'm lost. Camera tells me that it's 24 progressive frames with no pull down, FCP tells me that it's 29.97. Which is correct and how do I work with it?
Side note question: Why does my DSR-45 automatically know to change to 16x9 but not my monitors?
    Thanks!

Download and install this version, which should have been on Lion already. May have been overwritten if you installed the CD version.

  • Converting cropped 4X3 video to native 16X9 in Final Cut Pro 5

I short a short on the Panasonic DVX-100A in the cropped widescreen mode, which is essentially still a 4X3 image with black bars. I want to convert it to a native widescreen 16X9 file so I can transfer it to Beta for festivals. Does anyone know how to do this in FCP5? I would really appreciate any assistance.
    Thanks.
    Erik M.
    [email protected]

    Erik,
You could avoid scaling and create a custom sequence setting that would constrain the canvas size to show only the video portion and would effectively crop out the letterbox that the camera applied to it without the quality loss. You will need to experiment with different heights until you find the right number of pixels. Then you could Export Using Compressor and perform an Advanced Format Conversion to DV NTSC Anamorphic and import the converted file it into a DV NTSC Anamorphic sequence and try printing it to Beta. Keep in mind that you will be losing data by cropping it and that will affect the overall image quality of your final product.
The ideal situation would have been to shoot it in true anamorphic with Panasonic's lens adaptor to get a true anamorphic 16:9. You would then be able to print to video without losing resolution and would have the option to send it off to be up-resd to HD which would translate better in the long run if you hope to screen theatrically in 35mm and future proof the project for HD distribution. An example of a project that used this workflow is the film Room ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0417096/ ). It was shot on a DVX-100 with the anamorphic adaptor and up-resd to HD and then printed and screened in 35mm. Goes to show the potential that a small investment in an adaptor could turn into. Or you can just shoot 1080p.

  • 16x9 Quicktime Movie

    Hi All,
I am trying to export a qt movie of a project I filmed and edited in 16x9. The video was captured correctly and the sequence settings are correct...all 48 khz anamorphic. The DVD I burned is fine too. I used QT Conversion MPEG 2 for the video and AC3 my audio in Compressor.
But now I am trying to export this movie as qt 16x9. My probelm is that in the Quicktime Player it plays as 4x3 looking distorted. I've tried exporting in FCP as File Export as QT Movie and also tried File Export using QT Conversion, then went into the QT Mvie options under the settings, putting it to DV NTSC 16x9 and 720x480 for the size. The preview still window displays the image correctly as 16x9.
On a side note, whenever I capture 16x9 tape everything is right, the viewer, canvas, my external monitor...everything except the capture window, which displays as 4x3.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Scott

    Hi All,
I think I have found a solution to iDVD not burning a 16x9 video properly. From my previous experiences and research, it is my understanding that quicktime doesn't recoginize the 16x9 anamorphic flag. Having said that, someone on either Ken's site or on the Apple Discussion Boards responded to one of my e-mails telling me to export my sequence using QT conversion, selecting QT Movie with options (not to be confused with exporting as a self contained QT Movie) then resizing the video to a widescreen aspect ratio of say 853x480. Keep quality set to high, DVNTSC, 29.97 frames, audio at 48khz. I did a trial and error, first exporting a test movie this way and then importing it into iDVD. I selected a widescreen theme and dragged and dropped my video into the iDVD pane. My DVD actaully burned correctly in 16x9 format!
I am now in the process of exporting a 1hr 12 min wedding with chapters the same way. I will have to take an extra step of reimporting the video into FCP and then manuaaly finding chapter markers b/c I will only have a straight timeline line once I import the QT movie into FCP. I haven't tried this second step with chapter markers yet, but it is my guess that iDVD will read this QT Movie the same (853x480) but with chapter markers. In the past, the aspect ratio was 720x480 and iDVD would squeeze the video...not so with the 853x480 sequence. I wonder if exporting the size to say 1920x1080 would make any difference in quality? But no matter, the 853x480 video looked fine on my test.
The reason I am experimenting with iDVD again is b/c a client of mine requested the wedding theme with the blowing curtain for her theme. Her video is 1 hr 12 min long. I have burned DVDs in the past that were over 1 hr in length (maybe 1hr 20 min) and they actually looked pretty decent to me.
Worse comes to worse for a longer project, you can just burn a two disc set (or use a double layer disc I guess) use the blowing curtain for the main menu and the scene selection themes for submenus.
I have tried using Amorphisizer as mentioned on Ken's site and Apple's but never was able to get it to work. I think resizing the video to 853x480 solves the iDVD/widescreen problem!!!
I think I may have spoken to soon. My QT movie sized at 853x480 plays correctly in the QT Player, but when reimported back into FCP the video is squished to a smaller sized rectangular shape. What I'm trying to do is export the QT movie with chapters to play and burn correctly into iDVD. It will work with the 853x480 video I exported without chapters, but the question is how to get that video with chapters to work correctly. If only iDVD let you place chapter markers like DVDSP does.

  • Can i capture from an analog 16x9 source

Can i capture from an analog 16x9 HD source (SAT-TV) using analog (S-Video) output using a Canopus ADVC-100 into FCP 4.x and preserve the anamorphic aspect ratio? If so, how do I go about doing this (meaning, if this will even work - I'm fairly certain that the SAT box will output the 16x9 flag on s-video - what settings do i use in FCP to capture that aspect?
    Thanx in advance.

actually i am allowed to record from TV... i'm using the analog to do this. HRA allows me to do this - There are plenty of units out there that have tivo and a dvd burner that are legal) - all I'm doing is using my mac. Remember the VCR? this is no different as I am not going digital to digital or bypassing any DRM. Not to mention, I'm taping some docs that aren't even avaialble to purchase. ;(
Also, its just for my personal use. Just to have an archive of the show.
I'm using sledgehammer erquipment to just archive a show.. hehe

  • Is there a way to logarithmically stretch 4x3 to 16x9 in FCP?

    Hi everyone-
I have recently re-telecined a 16mm film so I could get it as an HD master. it was originally shot and composed in 4:3 years ago.
HD is 16:9. The 16mm film, as I said, is 4:3. I am trying to find a way of changing the aspect ratio. I know I can simply strectch the horizontal, but then all the people are short and fat. I could zoom so the sides hit the edge of frame, but then I loose a lot of head room.
When I have played the 4:3 DVD on my 16:9 Panasonic TV there's a mode called "just" (I have seem simillar modes on other brands called "mesh"). It zooms in the image slightly and streches it logarithmically. The center of the image is virtually untouched. The sides are gradually further and further stretched as it moves further from the center.
Sure, some shots look odd (if a person walks from left to right of frame they will go from long and flat on one end to normal shaped as they go through the middle of the picture space to long and flat on the other end. But for 99% of the DVDs I have watched (and the over the air Standard def stuff) the method looks fantastic.
I think combining the three various methods on a shot by shot basis would be the best solution.
The problem is I haven't been able to find a way to do that "logarithmic stretching" on FCP. Has anyone here seen a way? Or is there a plug in that I can buy? Its seems like it should be a simple math based solution.
    Thanks much,
    David

I tried the "Too Much Too Soon Free Plugins" filters. The smart strech does do what it says, the big issue with it, is it has a very noticable line where the streching occurs. It's not a gradual stretch. In other words if you have a close up of a person, the center part of the screen is great. Unstretched. However, there's a soft fuzzy line about 2/3 of the way into the screen where suddenly it is completely stretched from there to the edge of the picture. Obvioulsy when the person (or camera) moves you can quite clearly see where the line is.
In effect, it kind of looks like what would happen if I took a 4x3 image on V2, did a soft crop of a few inches off the sides. Then on V1, took the same image and stretched it to fill a 16x9 frame. Then, matched where the soft crop line was.
I looked to see if I could either make the line softer (and less noticable) or even change where the "line" was. Unfortunately, it was a no on both counts... In fact, there are no user customizable options at all with the filter
    Any other suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Dave

  • How to create a 16x9 slideshow

I'm looking for the best method to create a slideshow that ends up in 16x9, without stretching the images, for viewing on a large LCD HD TV. Something tells me that I might need to begin by cropping the original images in pre-processing, but I'd sure like to hear some specific steps from someone who has successfully accomplished this.
Prior to this point, I've usually started this process in iPhoto by exporting a slideshow as a .mov and then importing into iDVD.

  • How to go from HDV050i 16x9 video to a PAL SD 4x3  DVD?

Hi. I have the following situation. I have shot HDV footage in 50i mode. This material is of coarse in 16x9. I need to make it into a PAL SD 4x3 DVD. I don't mind if the sides of the image is cut off. I use the latest version of Final Cut Studio. This is the route I go: (as advised by someone from Apple)
I export the timeline from Final Cut Pro as a Apple ProRes 422LT 1440x1080 25p QuickTime movie.
I set the preferences of DVD Studio Pro to Upper Field, and I import the QT movie. All goes well, except I get a DVD that plays 16x9, which in my case is not acceptable. How can I make DVD Pro cut of the edges and turn it into 4x3? Any help is appricated.
    Thanks

In FCP, create a new sequence that is PAL SD 4x3. Drop your HD sequence into this one and scale it down to fit. This way you can see what you are going to get (and possibly move the image left or right if you need.)
Then Export out a QuickTime Movie. Bring that into Compressor and create an MPEG-2 of your video and an AC3 of your audio. Bring those into DVD SP for authoring.

  • Photoshop Elements 10 - Slideshow in 16x9 widesceen option?

I have Photoshop Elements 8 & Premeire Elements 8 and I love them but I'm leaning towards upgrading to 10 based on the new features.  The one thing that will convince me to do so will be if I will be able to create slideshows in a true 16x9 widescreen format using Photoshop Elements Organizer.  I called Adobe sales about this (twice!) but after being transferred in circles and put on hold for an hour, I figured I'd get a better response from my fellow users here.
    Thanks in advance!

In the slideshow editor, when you click output and edit with premiere elements you will get black bands at the top and bottom of the frame, and possibly the sides depending on the original aspect ratio of your photos. However you can scale the frames in premiere elements by clicking in the main window and dragging the corner handles of the transform bounding box. Hold down the shift key and drag one corner to constrain proportions. Some cropping may be necessary but you can certainly fill the screen. I use it when I mix video and stills so the frames all play uniformly on wide screen presentation.
Wow!  A great workaround since there doesn't seem to be an option for aspect ratio.  I tried your advice and it works quite well on most of the photos in the slideshow.  Some of the photos that have portrait orientation get too clipped though.  I suppose I'll need to convert them prior to importing them into the project.  Thank you very much!

  • Movie won't play in 16x9

I'm using iDVD to produce a DVD. When I add the movie which is a 16x9 Quick Time Movie file, it always comes up as 4x3. Any suggestions, please

Here are some things you can try.
Quit iDVD and delete your iDVD preferences. To do this, go to your username> library> preferences> com.apple.idvd.plist. Delete this file. Then reopen iDVD; it will create a new preference file with all of the default settings.
If that doesn't help, try doing a verify and repair of permissions using Disk Utility.
Try opening a new file and importing a different file just to rule out a problem with the video itself.
Read this article to see if there is anything that helps.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iDVD/7.0/en/6732.html
If the problem persists, you might want to do a reinstall of the iDVD program.
I hope one of these works.

  • My video shot at 16X9  came in to X as 4X3. How do I change it?

I shot about 16 Hr of SD video in 16X9. And also shot some Vixia video in 1440 x1080.  Just downloaded Final Cut Pro X and all the SD video came in in 4X3 and looks squeezed.  How do I change the aspect of the Sd video.  The vixia came in fine as wide screen.

Was the SD media captured from a camera in FCP? How'd it get into your computer?
You may have to use the QT7 pro player to fix this. You should also be able to fix it if editing into a widescreen project. What format project are you editing in SD anamorphic or HD anamorphic? Edit the SD clips into the project and in the spatial conform for the clips set it to fill.
