DPM 2012 R2 Update rollup 3 - unable to upgrade agent from 4.2.1217 to 4.2.1254

Fully updated DPM 2k12 R2. Have some protection groups with total of 11 servers in it (mainly w2k12 r2 servers and w2k8 r2 servers). After update rollup 3 try to update agents on protected servers. All agents excluding one were updated.
Update can't be performed on one w2k12 r2 server, which is also used as hypervisor. Hw is X3650_m2, common config. When try to update via DPM console (od manually), still same error.
Scenario: try to install agent update manualy. On protected server, copied agent install files (DPMAgentInstaller_KB2966014_AMD64.exe + 3 other files) to local drive. Run as domain admin user from elevated prompt. Install fail with error 0x80070643.
Does not matter how level of magic I try to put on it.
So, I studied log files (%windir%\temp\msdpm*.log, particulary MSDPMAgentPatchInstall.LOG. This is a long file, so I extract interesting parts, where installer indicated error:
MSI (s) (E4:D0) [09:55:31:963]: Invoking remote custom action. DLL: C:\Windows\Installer\MSI85E7.tmp, Entrypoint: InstallProvider
InstallProvider entered.
UnInstallProviderCatalogAndDLL entered.
StopServiceAndChangeStartType returned Error code = 0x00000000
Error in UnInstallProviderCatalogAndDLL. hr=0x8004e00f
CustomAction _InstallProvider.E785582E_DD9D_4A85_B866_3A1BC05C6110 returned actual error code 1603 (note this may not be 100% accurate if translation happened inside sandbox)
After that, rollback starting, so next part of log is not as interesting. Another interesting file is file named MSDPMAgentBootstrap0Curr.errlog, also in temp directory. File contained some (maybe) interesting infos,
try to past all of them because is not too long:

I'm clueless.

After long fight I find out, that problem is MS DTC failing on this server, because message about MSDTC (Distributed Transaction Coordinator - in services) was right before installer fail.
So root cause was that service MSDTC was not able to start. Start digging out, event viewer contains cca 4 messages from MSDTC, and one of them pointet me to log file. Seems MSDTC service have not proper right to log file under %WINDIR%\System32\MsDtc\MsDtc.log
Because service runs under "NetworkService" account, I granted rights for it using "icacls /grant  %WINDIR%\System32\MsDtc\MsDtc.log 'Networkservice':F
Maybe command is not written ok, sorry for that - did it very late yesterday, but many posts on net talks about it, look:

  • Does DPM 2012 R2 with rollup 2 support any version of Windows Server 2003/2008 on Hyper-V?

We have Hyper-V Hosts with VMs which include Windows 2003/2003R2/2008/2008R2.
If I we upgrade to DPM 2012 R2 Update Rollup 2, will we be able to backup all those VMs now?   The support matrix (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj860400.aspx)
still seems to show what is supported by the initial release of DPM 2012 R2, not an updated version for the rollup.
We currently use DPM 2012 SP1 and Hyper-V hosts using Server 2012.

    Hi,
This is kind of a loaded question because DPM 2012 R2 never dropped support for protecting Windows 2003/2008 using host level backup.
However, the support matrix will be updated shortly to include the added support for protecting workloads on Windows 2003 / 2008 using DPM 2012 R2 UR2.

  • SCOM 2012 SP1 Update Rollups

    Hi All,
I am planning to deploy patches on SCOM server. We are on SCOM 2012 SP1 as of now. As you know Microsoft has been released UR1, UR2, UR3, UR4, UR5 and UR6 for SCOM 2012 SP1.
Do I need to deploy each UR one by one on SCOM server or UR6 will have all fixes?
If I go for directly UR6 then does this patch contains all fixes which are available till UR5?

    http://blogs.technet.com/b/server-cloud/archive/2014/04/23/system-center-2012-sp1-ur6-and-system-center-2012-r2-ur2-now-available.aspx
Customers can now download the latest update rollups for both System Center 2012 SP1 and System
Center 2012 R2.  Update rollups provide a cumulative package of fixes for each System Center component and are available from Microsoft Update.  Alternatively, they can be manually downloaded from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

  • SCOM 2012 SP1 Update Rollup 5 - DB and DW SQL script and the Management Packs

    Hi,
    I am applying SCOM 2012 SP1 update rollup 5 from KB article : 2904680.
Step#  4 and 5 from the "Installation Information" sections says to run the SQL queries(UR_Datawarehouse.sql and Update_rollup_mom_db.sql) located at "%SystemDrive%\Program Files\System Center 2012 SP1\Operations
    Manager\Server \SQL Script for Update Rollups\."
But I do not have "System Center 2012 SP1\Operations Manager\Server \SQL Script for Update Rollups\." folder location on  my SCOM Management Servers. Similarly I do not have the MPs given in Step #6.
Can someone please let me know from where else can I get these SQL scripts and the MPs. What if I don't run these SQL scripts. Is that OK?

You will find it on below path%SystemDrive%\Program Files\System Center 2012\Operations Manager\Server \SQL Script for Update Rollups\.
inside system center 2012 folder> search to Server folder and inside it you will find SQL Script

  • Orchestrator 2012 SP1 Update Rollup 2 - Runbooks missing in web console and designer after moving to new folders

I've run across an interesting problem.  After applying SP1 update rollup 2, I decided to re-organize my runbooks by placing them in a new folder naming structure.
I created the new folder structure under the runbook server in the runbook designer.  I then right clicked and moved the runbooks to their new location.  Everything was fine until windows updates were applied (Windows 2012) and the server was restarted.
After the restart, the runbooks are missing from both the designer and the web console.
I saw posts about truncating the Authorization Cache.  I did that (see below) but that has not resolved my issue.
    TRUNCATE TABLE [Microsoft.SystemCenter.Orchestrator.Internal].AuthorizationCache
    EXEC [Microsoft.SystemCenter.Orchestrator.Maintenance].EnqueueRecurrentTask 'ClearAuthorizationCache'
    EXEC [Microsoft.SystemCenter.Orchestrator.Maintenance].EnqueueRecurrentTask 'Statistics'
Not all the runbooks are missing.  Some are visible.  However, if I view the runbooks via SQL by querying Orchestrator.dbo.Policies, I see all of the runbooks. They just all don't show up in the designer.
SELECT * FROM [Orchestrator].[dbo].[POLICIES] Order by Name
The ones that are missing are always the same when the web console or designer is run (designer ran with and without elevated permissions).
Has anyone else seen this behavior?  How do I get the runbooks to show back up in the correct folders?  Or, how can I get them to show up anywhere so I can move them to the appropriate location?
    Thank you
    Ted

    Hi Ted,
    sometimes seen similar.
It's not supported to manipulate the Orchestrator DB with SQL, but I know only to fix it with SQL statements.
    All information below without warranty!
There's a column named Deleted in table Policies. Look with your select statement above if the Runbooks have the deleted flag. If yes, update it to 0.
But, I guess not. I think the previous containing folder has the deleted flag (table folders) and the Runbooks have still this folder as ParentID.
SELECT POLICIES.Name AS RunbookName, FOLDERS.Name AS FolderName, FOLDERS.Deleted AS FolderDeleted
    FROM POLICIES INNER JOIN
    FOLDERS ON POLICIES.ParentID = FOLDERS.UniqueID
WHERE POLICIES.Name = 'Name of one Runbook'
If so, change the deleted flag from the containing Folder:
    UPDATE FOLDERS
    SET Deleted = 0
    FROM POLICIES INNER JOIN
    FOLDERS ON POLICIES.ParentID = FOLDERS.UniqueID
WHERE (POLICIES.Name = 'Name of one Runbook')
after that Restart Management Service and Refresh view in Runbook Designer
    Good luck!

  • KB2919355 2012 R2 update crashes DNS servers which load zones from file

I allowed KB2919355, the Windows Server 2012 R2 update 1, to install on a pair of standalone servers which run just DHCP and DNS for an isolated network. They are dedicated physical servers. Because they are not joined to an AD, they load their DNS zones
from file. As soon as KB2919355 is installed the DNS server service "terminates unexpectedly". It does this within seconds every time you try to start it. Only event 7034, "The DNS Server service terminated unexpectedly", is logged.
Uninstall KB2919355 and the DNS service returns to normal.
DNS.exe is replaced by the update: the previous version was 6.3.9600.16384; the update version is 6.3.9600.17042.
To see if this might be being caused by my zone files I then built a new Server 2012 R2 virtual machine, put all updates on it including KB2919355, and then added the DNS role. Sat there without any configuration changes from the default the DNS Server service
continued to run. Then I made the one change, to load zone data on start-up from file. I had not created any zones or made any other changes. The result was a DNS Server service which crashes and will not stay running for more than a few seconds. Change
back to the default "load from Active Directory and Registry" and the service runs normally again.
This looks horribly like a bug.

The zone data is stored in the zone file.
Neil has the right approach (IMHO) in loading the zone info from the registry.
The zone file itself has all of the zone records and can be transferred to DNS secondaries through either AXFR or IXFR zone transfers. If your secondaries are BIND DNS servers, remember to click the BIND compatibility check box in the properties dialog box.
The "load zone data" setting only controls the boot process of the DNS server and not the actual storage of the zone records.
    Hope this helps!

  • Unable to upgrade OS from Server 2003 to 2008 after virtualization in VMware

We have been unable to upgrade any of our Windows Server 2003 to 2008 after they have been virtualized. After what looks like a successful upgrade it just gets stuck on the Microsoft corporation screen. No issues if the server was built
in VMware. We use the same install files for both Physical and Virtual Servers.

    I'd check the log files.

  • Turning off VM in guest does not update status in VMM 2012 R2 Update Rollup 2 console

I am seeing an issue with a few VMs where if you turn the VM off from within the guest OS, the status does not change in the VMM console.
    Details about the environment:
Six node cluster running Server 2012 R2 Datacenter Core
Cluster validate completed successfully.  Only warnings due to some VMs being offline
    Virtual Machine Manager 2012 R2 with UR2
251 VMs in cluster used for Citrix XenDesktop and XenApp
I've read a few articles similar to this one that refer to a change in the VM Light Refresher schedule from RTM to SP1.  (http://blogs.technet.com/b/chengw/archive/2012/09/17/update-on-vmm-refreshers-what-has-changed-and-what-this-means-to-you.aspx).
Basically it looks like the light VM refresher was turned off and now we depend upon WMI if the environment support WCF 3.0.
Does this mean that we're looking at the WMI on the Host or the Guest?  Or, is it possible that I just have WMI corruption in a few guest VMs?
If I want to turn it back on, it seems like I should be able to create a registry DWORD key in HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager\Settings called VMPropertiesUpdateInterval and set the value.  Does this seem plausible?
    Would it be supported?

I specifically asked the product team about that.
And this has actually been the behavior all along. However, it was never my experience until after applying UR2.
And this is an experience vs. Product behavior thing. Somewhere in the process something changed with how the one is decided upon when vmm gets more than one match.
I am going to add this to my discussion with them.
Glad we have your issue resolved.

  • After recent updates I am unable to airplay music from my iPhone 4s to Apple TV

I have iPhone 4s updated to os6 and new apple TV the black one. it was working fine but recently I noticed I can no longer do airplay. I can not even mirror stuff anymore. everything is updated, whats the deal? I tried regular player and that has no icon for airplay either. Wisky tango foxtrot?
P.s. everything is synched up with the same good wifi network theres internet on both the apple tv and iphone 4s everything is updated but airplay does not work...

In iTunes go to View>Show Sidebar.  This will make it look and behave more like previous versions.  Then connect your phone, click on it's name on the left side, go to the Music tab and make sure you haven't selected Sync your entire library.  You may want to check the songs in your library that you want on your phone, then go to the Summary tab of your iTunes sync settings and select Sync only checked songs and videos, then click Apply at the bottom to sync your phone.  This should transfer only the checked songs and remove the rest.

I've tried to follow this procedure but I got 3 files:

DPM 2012 R2: Remove Recovery Points

  • Surely It cannot be this hard! DPM 2012 R2 with Update rollup 2

I am close to giving up!
New to DPM but very experienced with networking/servers.
I installed DPM 2012 R2 and then installed rollup 2
I launch the DPM console, add some storage and then go to install the agent on a server - it fails
I get the standard message. When I check on the server I tried to install to I can see that the dpm 2012 r2 agent coordinator service was installed and running and listening on port 5719 but there is no DPMRA service.
So I perform a manual installation using the correct version from Rollup 2 on the server to be protected. This goes OK and I return to the DPM server to add the protected server. Made sure services were running on both servers, checkerd RPC, WMI, DCOM settings
and all seems OK but when I try to add the protected server from the DPM console using the attach agent option it fails with error 370.
Followed the top 20 suggestions, configured firewall for all ports on both servers. Tried turning the firewall off and still will not install.
I have also tried using a Hyper-V server, a physical server and none will work which tends to point to an issue with the DPM server.
The thing that puzzles me is that after I perform a manual agent installation on the protected server this seems to knock out the dpm 2012 r2 agent coordinator service which is no longer listed under services wheras DPMRA is running. I expected both services
    to be installed and running.
When I perform a NETSTAT -a after installing the remote agent I can see port 5718 is listening but not port 5719
If I go back a step and try a dpm 2012 r2 agent coordinator install via DPM console (as part of adding the protected server) it does install dpm 2012 r2 agent coordinator and it listens on port 5719 but the DPMRA agent software is not installed.
I have tried deinstalling both the DPM agent software on the protected server and have even reinstalled DPM 2012 R2 with Rollup 2 with no change
I have verified communications between the servers. Checked the DPM server is in the relevant groups. Am at a complete loss on what to do next - it should not be this hard.
Can someone confirm to me that they expect both the dpm 2012 r2 agent coordinator service running on 5719 and the DPMRA service to be running on 5718 on the protected server which is what I assume but this
    is not happening!
DPM server is a physical box running Server 2012. Protected server is a Physical box running Server 2012 R2. I have also tried with a physical server 2008R2 with the same results. I am not running Server 2003
    prd

After 3 long days trying everything I could think of and following all of the excellent guidance out there ( thanks guys) I have a workaround.
The answer was to make the dpm server computer account a member of the domain admins group.
After I restarted the DPM server I saw that although the protected server account was still in error - the error message changed from 270 to 316.
So I then add the protected server computer account to the domain admins group
After I restarted the computers I could see the magic OK in the status of the DPM console.
As an experiment I removed the protected servers computer account from domain admins and restarted the server. After the restart DPM could no longer communicate with error 316 again.
So I tried adding the DPM server computer account to the protected servers local administrators group but this did not work.
Deeply unhappy with making a computer account a member of domain admin group but it works.
The question is why? There is obviously a security permissions issue that does not affect domain admins.
I am running this on freshly built servers on a simple, single domain.
Microsoft you need to look into this.
