DPM Server System State and Bare MEtal using SqlServerWriter

HI All,
Having issuing with bare metal backups of a DPM server and was hoping to get some help.
I have a DPM 2010 Server running on server 2008 r2. SQL databases are hosted locally on a non system drive (e)
When I run Windows Server Backup locally on the box to do a bare metal backup (it selects c and d drives along with system state) the backup fails.
vssadmin lsit writers shows the following after the backup fails;
Writer name: 'SqlServerWriter'
   Writer Id: {a65faa63-5ea8-4ebc-9dbd-a0c4db26912a}
   Writer Instance Id: {9a1fdd12-d702-4ffc-914d-4361259cc55f}
   State: [8] Failed
   Last error: Inconsistent shadow copy
Application log shows this;
The backup operation that started at '‎2014‎-‎07‎-‎09T08:30:54.453000000Z' has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up
failed with following error code '2155348129'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.
The backup log shows exactly the same error as above.
When I stop the SQL Server VSS Writer service and run the backup it runs just fine, however then my database backup on this server fails.
The C drive partition is marked as active.
Any ideas as to why bare metal backup is using the SQL writer and failing. Is there any way to specify what writer to use?
Thank in advance.

You better should ask this the support of the software vendor of "bare metal backup"

Following this blog post: http://henryomd.blogspot.com/2015/02/zynq-amp-linux-on-cpu0-and-bare-metal.html, I got Linux running on CPU0 loading a bare-metal application on CPU1.  I get the error "BUG: using smp_processor_id() in preemptible [00000000] code" and a stack trace though. And the LED that my cpu1 app is suppose to toggle isn't doing so. Is this error one that will prevent cpu1 application from fully running?  How can I tell what cpu1 is doing?

I have exactly that same problem that you posted on 5-19-2015, ewong.
In components/apps/app_cpu1/data, app_cpu1(.elf) size is 169056 bytes, but in ./build/linux/rootfs/targetroot/lib/firmware and  in the targets’s /lib/firmware, it’s only 66480 bytes. There is no other file anywhere in my project with that same size (66480), I have no idea where the bogus copy comes from.
Following an instruction in ug978, I modified my Makefile as below:
    include apps.common.mk
    all: build install
    build:
    clean:
    .PHONY: install image
    FIRMWARE=app_cpu1
    install:
     $(TARGETINST) -d data/$(FIRMWARE) /lib/firmware/$(FIRMWARE)
    I'm using Petalinux 2014.4.

  • DPM 2010 System Drive and System State backup times increased dramatically

Using DPM 2010 to backup several computers, hypervisors, and the DPM server it self, a stand alone server all of a sudden no longer backs-up within a reasonable amount of time. This is just happening on the C drive and System State. The D drive and all other
servers and hypervisors are running smoothly. You can see below that something changed on December 11th. Backups for those two items when from about an hour to over 10 hours each. This is causing all other backups that have yet to run to be canceled because
we do not typically like the backups to run during business hours.
No changes to the server had been made. Updates were not applied to that server until December 18th. The server has been restarted. The agent version is the latest v3.0.7706.0. Ran the command "vssadmin list writers", show no errors. Any insight
would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I updated the exclusions based on the following article using the executables and path listed in TechNet article above but to no avail. Verified AV policy applied.
    https://kc.mcafee.com/corporate/index?page=content&id=KB68701
Will have to figure out how to disable AV during backups and enable after completions.
Will probably write a PowerShell script for this.

  • Can I use the Time Capsule strictly for system backup and continue to use my Airport Extreme for all my wireless needs

I want to use the Apple Time Capsule as an external drive and continue to use my Airport Extreme for all my wireless needs. Can I do that? The reason I ask is that my Time Machine utility cannot find the TIme Capsule - it only shows me the Airport Extreme, even when I "Rescan". SO I am unable to use the Time Capsule.

You will need to connect an Ethernet cable from one of the LAN <-> ports on the AirPort Extreme to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.
Perform a "hard reset" on the Time Capsule by holding in the reset button for 9-10 seconds, then give it another minute to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Open AirPort Utility, select the Time Capsule, and click Manual Setup
Click the Time Capsule tab located below the row of icons to assign a name to the Time Capsule, a device password, and adjust Time Zone settings.
Next, click the Wireless tab located to the right of the Time Capsule tab
Change the setting for Wireless Mode to Off
Click the Internet icon, then click the Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Click Update at the lower right to save the settings and allow 30 seconds for the Time Capsule to restart to a green light.
    You are all set

  • We are in the process of upgrading to Directory Server 5.1, and are currently using Netscape C SDK 4.0. Is it recommended (or required) that we update to the latest version (5.08) of the SDK as well?

No it is not a requirement that your client application uses the latest version of the C-SDK. However some bugs have been fixed in the latest version of the C-SDK and also some new features are available... so I can only recommend you to use it.

  • System state synchronizations and express full backups of protected 2012 R2 machines overload DPM server.

I have one DPM 2012 R2 UR2 server which is running on Windows 2008 R2 and 2 protection groups (A, and B). The server uses direct attached storage for all replicas and recovery volumes.
Group A protects the system state and bare metal recovery of 25 Windows 2008R2 servers. It creates recovery points using express full backup each night at 6PM. The servers range from file/print, SQL, domain controllers, terminal servers, web servers, etc. Total
    data 3TB.
Group B protects the system state and bare metal recovery of only 3 Windows 2012R2 servers. It creates recovery points using express full backup each night (morning) at 1AM. The servers are 1 domain controller, 1 WSUS server, and 1 server that runs VMware VCenter.
    Total data 90GB.
During group A's nightly backup, which takes approximately 2 hours, the DPM server becomes noticeably slower but remains functional. I can open Windows update and check for updates, copy files to and from network locations, launch intenet explorer, etc. It's
stressed since 25 servers are creating backups on it but it remains functional.
During group B's nightly backup the DPM server grinds to a complete halt. Launching internet explorer takes an hour (literally), 10 minutes will pass before I get a menu after clicking the start button. Basically it becomes completely unresponsive until the
backups finish which typically doesn't happen because I'm forced to cancel them upon arriving at work...8 hours later.
I read that DPM uses the built in Windows Backup to protect system state and bare metal recovery. Did something change in Windows Backup from 2008R2 to 2012R2 that would cause this? Why can my DPM server easily backup 25 Windows 2008R2 machines at once in 2
hours yet freezes solid for 8 hours or more when backing up only 3 Windows 2012R2 machines?
I left performance monitor running during the night and it showed an average disk queue length of 49 during group B's backup but everything else was normal. Seems the disks on the DPM server are the bottleneck but again I ask why can my DPM server easily backup
25 Windows 2008R2 machines at once in 2 hours yet freezes solid for 8 hours or more when backing up only 3 Windows 2012R2 machines? Both protection groups use the same disks.
    How can I fix this?
Teenage angst has paid of well, now I'm bored and old.

    Hi CS,
You can also run a performance monitor.
For some basic perfmon counters to help narrow down the possible bottleneck:
    Perf Counters for DPM
    Logical Disk/Physical Disk
    \%idle
    • 100% idle to 50% idle = Healthy
    • 49% idle to 20% idle = Warning or Monitor
    • 19% idle to 0% idle = Critical or Out of Spec
\%Avg. Disk Sec Read or Write
    • .001ms to .015ms  = Healthy
    • .015ms to .025 = Warning or Monitor
    • .026ms or greater = Critical or Out of Spec
Current Disk Queue Length (for all instances)
80 requests for more than 6 minutes.
    • Indicates possibly excessive disk queue length.
    Memory
    \Pool Non Paged Bytes*
    • Less that 60% of pool consumed=Healthy
    • 61% - 80% of pool consumed = Warning or Monitor.
    • Greater than 80% pool consumed = Critical or Out of Spec.

    • Less that 60% of pool consumed=Healthy
    • 61% - 80% of pool consumed = Warning or Monitor.

    • 50% of free memory available or more =Healthy
    • 25% of free memory available = Monitor.
    • 10% of free memory available = Warning
    • Less than 100MB or 5% of free memory available = Critical or Out of Spec.

  • DPM 2012 R2 UR4 and BMR backup from physical 2008 R2 (DC, DNS, DHCP,WSUS, WDS)

    Hi,
    I'm completely lost.
    We updated from DPM2010 (2008 R2) to DPM 2012 R2 RU4 (2012 R2).
Clean install. Same hardware. Everything went quite smoothly.
Our new (and also old did the same thing) DMP protects some Hyper-V guest on our 2008 R2 Hyper-V cluster, one Exchange (2010) DB's and SQL 2008 R2 DB's and one physical server - 2008 R2 (DC, DNS, DHCP,WSUS, WDS ~160GB of data).
Currently we are using some Buffalo Terastation's III (TS-RIXL) iSCSI SAN storage to hold our DPM protected data.
    Configured as RAID 5.
Our new DPM server is connected to those iSCSI devices using built in MS iSCSI initiator via secondary NIC on this server using dedicated iSCSI subnet.
Everything seems to be fine unitil System State and BMR (I'v checked both) runs.
Basically my iSCSI NIC shows Write about ~170Mbit/s and Read about 520Mbit/s when backing up virtual machines, Exchange or SQL.
When it comes to System State and BMR backup the trouhgput is MUCH slower (about 65Mbit/s) and I can not figure out why. I understand that the BMR backup initiates direct writing to the DPM created and shared replica volume on my iSCSI NAS (my wording
might be not correct but basically  I understand how this works). But I don't understand why the speed is so much slower. I'v tried everything, googeled around, changed NIC drivers, firmware etc. No luck.
If I just copy some big ISO file from/to server to DPM or vice versa the speed is arount 100MB/s (as reported by windows itself). So it seems to able to utilize full network speed. But why this backup is so slow? I'm excpecting to see speed about ~170Mbit/s
because it corresponds my iSCSI Write speed as seen when backing up hyper-v guests and DB's..
    What I'm doing wrong?
    Any help is appreciated :)
    rgds Sven

    Hi Sven,
Sometimes BMR is slower than backing up virtual machines (VHDs). If there is a free local disk, please test to do a backup locally to see the speed. From your description a common backup works much faster so let's see if it is the backup speed which causes
    the issue or not.

  • When should the System State be explicitly backed up?

I'm trying to find out what is covered by the BMR and System State options in DPM 2012 R2. According to the below blog post BMR includes the System State. But what does the System State include? Would you ever need to back it up if you've included BMR
    in the PG?
By default the BMR will protect the "critical system data" According to the Microsoft definition -> critical data =  System State and C drive and all other drivers that contain system data directories (Program files).
    http://scdpm.blogspot.co.uk/2011/11/bare-metal-recovery-bmr-option-in-dpm.html

    Hi
    Systemstate includes:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc938537.aspx
BMR ist an additional Option which gives you the possibility to Recovery the Systemstate (which is included in BMR) on a different Hardware

  • UCS B-Series bare metal OS FC Issues with failover

My customer is seeing loss of access to FC attached SAN on b-series blades that have windows and Red Hat installed bare metal, VMware are fine just these 2 OS's.  It happens when the 6100 fails over to the subordinate.  They say they reboot the servers 4-5 times before they are live on the fabric again as intended.  They have many UCS systems in many environments with differing versions of firmware and too many variables to list here, looking to see if anyone seen and rectified this, possible drivers for 2008r2 and RH ???
    thx
    dave

    Dave,
Proper fabric failover really pertains to the OS and how is deals with the storage platform paths. When UCS failsover the the fabric an MPIO driver on the OS must be tested and functional to achieve proper a connection status. When installing Windows or Linux and bare metal you will need to ensure that the correct MPIO driver is installed on the OS. This driver should be obtained from the storage admin in your enviroment and must be installed and tested for proper path failover prior ro any UCS failover testing. In the case of VMware, vSphere uses a native MPIO driver and works out of the box, Windows and Linux will require a MPIO driver to match this funtionalilty.
    I hope this helps,
    David

  • System Stats opinions Please - WORKLOAD vs. NOWORKLOAD?

    Dear Experts,
Bit of a background - We've a big (10TB) 10.2.0.5, 5 node RAC system for a big Oracle eBusiness Suite (R12 - HRMS/Payroll) implementation and at the minute we are running on some old (2 years old) gathered NOWORKLOAD system stats and since then a significant underlying IO infrastructure change has gone in and we are planning to upgrade the underlying server infrastructure from IBM P5 to IBM P7 soon as well (which introduces significant CPU changes etc.) and me personally think its the time to let Oracle know about all these changes under the carpet by updating the System Stats and since its likely going to be a significant change as potentially all the plans will be impacted (and few/some might go in an unintended direction) so want to know your opinion on these questions about it please :
    1. Shall we just update the Noworkload Stats and leave it as it is (db_file_multiblock_read_count in left unset i.e. left for the system to set automatically).
    OR
    2. Shall we go for the WORKLOAD stats instead? If we go this way then I am planning to go by the brilliant strategy mentioned by Christian Antognini in his lovely book 'Troubleshooting Oracle Performance' for stability point of view.
    3. We are planning to go 11g (11.2.0.2+) in the 2nd half to next year as well - is better to leave this evil till then if 11g introduces or improves the system stats mechanism significantly? An opinion favoring this is also that we'll get better and more robust testings done if we pile it on 11g project so may be a bit safer approach (and better for work/human resources planning as well).
Out of the 5 RAC nodes, 2 are dedicated to OLTP stuff, 2 for Batch (Payrolls etc.) and 1 for (low priority) Reporting so obviously there are concerns around getting to a setting that's going to be the best fit for all of them and since thats not easy to achieve the risk is higher.
I am sure I am not new here and some of you'd have come across these questions as well so am wondering if I can get some opinions or advices please? Particularly from the people who have gone from NOWORKLOAD to WORKLOAD (preferable eBusiness suite and even better HRMS/Payroll) please and also from the people who've distributed workload like we have on difference RAC nodes- if they can share their experiences on how did it go for them - that'll be good please? (Obviously everyone's system is different and so is everyone's workload but if 8 out 10 say its been good for them or even bad - then that gives a bit of a feel about it).
Or are most people still running on 'safer' NOWROKLAOD stats please becs WORKLOAD is deemed to be a bigger change?
Also, in the end - I've heard some not so great stuff about IBM P7 as well - just wondering if there are people out there with some experience on these as well please?
    Thanks in advance.

Why? Well there is a bug.

  • Backing up DPM2012R2 Database with a different DPM Server

    Hi,
is it still a recommended way to backup up a DPM 2012R2 database (-> pure SQL on the same Server) with another DPM2012R2 Server?
So just attach it and back it up (like in DPM2010)?
Or shall one always use dpmbackup.exe?
If supported / recommended is it possible to backup a DPM 2012SP1 database with a DPM 2012R2 Server?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
Using native DPM backup using D2D is fine for non disaster recovery scenario, otherwise D2T or D2D2T or using secondary protection is best.  DPMBACKUP is non automated, so that is good for ad-hoc backups before major updates.
Scheduling native SQL backups is also viable solution.
If using Secondary DPM Server, both primary and secondary must be the same DPM versions including updates.

  • Csa dns suffix wildcards in system state

Has anyone tried using a dns wildcard in the system states ? I have a customer that uses something.net as common dns, but locally they get assigned to stuff like 123.something.net. If i use *.something.net it doesn't match, *something.net is a nogo as well, how is it supposed to be used ? do i really need to find all the subdomains and add these ?

I think dns suffix matching field in system states sets can be used for this. Following link may help you

Go to Identity Server v5.1 documentation. It's well documented there. In two words, after you installed it this way, you have to apply 'existing.ldif' file to create ACIs and roles, then to create all services.
Please check existing.ldif before you will apply it. Depending on your DIT, it may be quite broken. Don't forget to change ums.xml to match your schema.
