DPS Versioning

Please help us understand versioning and issues we are having.
We have an existing application built on r26 with a fully custom viewer using the js apis (iOS and Android).
Question1: If we want to use r29 FOLIOS, will these be supported in our r26 application?
     - If yes, we are not seeing this working. When publishing a folio with r29, we see TWO folios, both the r26 and the r29 folios. This is not an 'update' to the existing folio, but rather an entirely new folio.
     - If not, why not? I need to explain to our clients what they're paying for as our understanding (when Adobe sold this to us), is that we can take advantage of new folio features without having to update the application. This doesn't seem to actually be the case based on this issue.
     - Specific question: How do you take an EXISTING folio and UPDATE it to a new DPS version without creating a separate unique ID and thus presenting two separate folios for the same content?
Question 2: If somehow it is possible to update a previously published folio without creating a SECOND folio (rather, simply updating the existing one), is there documentation describing this on your site? Google searches turn up very little. How is this accomplished?
Question 3: Regarding all of this, will we run into separate issues between iOS and Android? Our assumption is that because we're still on the AIR viewer (and will NOT be adapting r30), we will have Android-specific issues. What are these, if any?
Question 4: Is there any way when 'unpublishing' a folio to forcibly remove that folio from the users device? Our assumption is no, and confirmation would be helpful. If we CAN do this, how?
     - Note: Updating the application via iTunes is not an option. Strict release schedules make it impossible to say "Oh, just build a new app!"....
Thank you all for your help in our continued struggles on this platform.
Tim

I'm assuming you're creating a multi-folio app, not a Single Edition app.
Question 1: If you have a v26 app, you can download v26 or earlier folios, but you cannot download v27 or later folios.
     - You're seeing two folios because you created one v26 folio and a separate v29 folio. The v26 folio will work. If you try to download the v29 folio in a v26 app, you'll be prompted to update the viewer.
     - Trying to open a v29 folio in a v26 app is like trying to open an InDesign CS6 document in InDesign CS3. The older viewers don't understand the newer folio formats.
     - Regarding the specific question, you don't need to update the v26 folio to v29. Just leave it as v26. If you want to update the folio to a newer version to take advantage of a new feature, use the Folio Properties dialog box. But again, it isn't necessary. The folio format didn't change between v26 and v29.
Important: If you have a v26 app, create folios using the default v26 format. When you get a chance to update your app to v29 or v30, you can do so, and you can still publish v26 folios.
Question 2: To update a folio, sign in to Folio Producer in the cloud, select the folio, and click Update. To update articles in a folio, edit the source documents in InDesign, and then update the articles using the flyout menu in Folio Builder panel. You'll want to do that before you update the

You might want to watch a few getting started videos and download the free DPS Tips app to learn more about the DPS workflow: http://helpx.adobe.com/digital-publishing-suite/help/getting-started-digital-publishing-su ite.html
(When you're using Google to search, I think the best approach is to use "DPS <term>" such as "DPS update folio" or "DPS Android.")
Question 3: There are significant differences between the iOS viewers and Android viewers. Plus, with tomorrow's release, there is initial support for the new native Android viewer.

You could download and Install the Combo Update, Restart your computer, check the settings in Desktop & Screen Saver, as well as Energy Saver and see if that helps your issue...
You can download the Combo Update here... http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Be sure to do a Restart after the Install and Yes it is fine to install over existing.

  • Can I create an iPad3 'rendition' with Creative Cloud DPS Version?

I'm preparing my first publication with DPS, and before I get too far along and spend too much time with image resolution, I want to confirm that I can create a separate rendition for the iPad 3, using the DPS that comes with Creative Cloud. I rember reading in the past that the rendition feature was not available with this version, but I want to take advantage of creating a separate rendition of my document for the iPad 3 as outlined in Colin Fleming's  DPS_iPad3_bestpractice.pdf, if at all possible.

Bob, just to clarify, the techniques mentioned in the article you linked to, as well as the best practices mentioned here: http://wwwimages.adobe.com/www.adobe.com/content/dam/Adobe/en/devnet/digitalpublishingsuit e/pdfs/dps-ipad3-bestpractice-apr2012.pdf - they are applicable to the version of DPS included with the Creative Cloud membership?

  • Confused with DPS versions?

Being a creative cloud subscriber, I have the ability to build sinlge edition apps with DPS, but I am very confused as to what this means.
I have a publication which we want to get on the iTunes store. It is one publication which will have multiple issues going forward (one a month). With the single edition version of DPS, will I be able to submit additional issues to my app or does every issue have to be it's own app? Furthermore, will I be able to require readers to subscribe to read the publication?
It would seem completely illogical to me to not let an app update with future issues of a publication and I really hope this isn't the case.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thank you.

You can set up an account at digitalpublishing.acrobat.com/welcome/ using whatever email/username/password the client would like.  When firing up DPS, you login to the Folio Builder using those credentials then build your folio accordingly.
For the next client, repeat the process using a different email/username/password.
I would also recommend having your own acrobat.com account for testing purposes then, when the folio is complete and good to go, just recreate the entire folio in the proper client account.
I'd definitely get with the client and see how they'd like to proceed.  Contrary to other advice, with using the Adobe Content Viewer method the size of your viewship is meaningless.  Doesn't matter if there's 10 or 1000 people logging in and using the folio via the Content Viewer - it works the same way. There's no download or signup limit that I'm aware of.. With an Enterprise account, there's a far greater level of control and security that a corporation would appreciate - including distribution.  If there's an enterprise account, the IT group can set up provisional profiles that go out to pre-approved devices (iPad, iPhone, Android), and then the users can download.  Much better control and I believe that IT could also immediately revoke permissions if necessary.  With the Content Viewer method, once it's out there...it's out there.  No way to pull it from individual devices.  You'd have to delete the entire folio in the Builder...but then everyone loses it the next time they login to the Content Viewer app.

  • DPS versions

Not sure if im still on the loop but as far as i know there's a single, pro, and enterprise subscriptions of DPS.   However, I was advised by a vendor that single and pro will no longer be offered soon specifically by next month.
I also noticed on the adobe pages that Enterprise is being promoted and infos and comparison about single and pro is nowhere to be found.
Can someone enlighten us please?  Thanks

  • DPS questions

    1. How long does it typically take to get an App approved by Apple in your experience?
    2. Let's say I have the Creative Cloud (and the DPS version that it comes with) and I update an App that is already published. If a person already has that App on their device, do they receive notice of the update?
    3. It is our intent to have a free app in the app store. Once downloaded, the user will click on it and a screen will come up asking for a username and password. Once that has be verified, they will have access to the content available per their authorization. This would be for sensitive, free documents.  Is this available with Adobe DPS?
    4. Another scenario would be for purchasing multiple copies of a purchased book. Would they need to download each paid copy individually or could a username and pw be used to give them a specific number of copies? It would be almost like a book store App.  Is this available with Adobe DPS?

    1. Approval time ranges from a few days to eight weeks, but most apps are approved in 1-2 weeks. App rejections obviously increase the approval time. Be especially careful of submitting an app that Apple might consider to be a book.
    2. Yes, users are notified that the app needs to be updated.
    3. Yes, this is a feature called "Restricted Distribution." It's available only for Enterprise publishers, not Creative Cloud.
    4. Yes, this is called a multi-folio app.

  • Passing Parameters within a DPS App

I have a DPS App with 2 slots. One slot contains embedded code which is suppose to show a list of assets. One slot contains code that launches an external site in a frame within the DPS app.
As per this article New Consumer Marketing APIs | Adobe Developer Connection, it is possible to pass parameters from an external app to a DPS app.
I am running an issue. In my external site I am trying to call the DPS app like so dpsapp://v1/slot/storefront?path=/content/test.pdf via a button.  What I have noticed is that when I do that, the app does switch to the storefront side but queryingthe urlPath or urlQueryString will return a null value.
It seems like I am unable to pass a parameter to the DPS app within the same app. If I load the external website in Safari, I am able to query for the parameters.
Am I missing a step here or is it not possible?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Do you use the adobeDPS.configurationService.applicationContext.urlQueryString to call the parameter? adobeDPS.configurationService.applicationContext.urlQueryString
//Sample code to get a parameter from the query string, com.adobe.CustomDPSViewer://v1/slot/store?companyName=Adobe
    var companyName = adobeDPS.configurationService.applicationContext.urlQueryString.companyName;
alert(companyName); //Alert box will appear with 'Adobe' in the description

What is the Adobe DPS version of your app?

  • Re:Push notification error when publishing a new folio from DPS

I have run into a problem when publishing a new folio to our app from DPS Folio Producer. I published the new folio without a probelm, but when I pus the "Notify" button, I get an error message that an error has occured while sending the push notification. The push certificate has expired and that to upload a valid push notification, I should rebuild my app in DPS App Builder and to retry sending push notification. (See screen grab).
This is our first push notification for a recently approved app. I worked through all the instruction to create push notifications through DPS. And we tested everything and it was fine.
Our app is a free subscription, multi-folio app in newsstand hosted on the DPS server with DPS push notifications.
What am I doing wrong? I really don't want to have to bebuild/resubmit the app to iTunes to get this to work. It seems odd that the push certificate would be expired, we just created it last month.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
Direct saves to the server from MS Office over Webdav are not recommended when the versioning mode is Manual. The reason is that the actions of checking out & checking in the document need to be done from the Team Collaboration client and are not done from within MS Office.
Rather, set the versioning mode to Auto or Disabled and it should work just fine.
    Thanks,

  • DPS: transform attribute value - more than sub-string - more like awk/sed

We have been working on using DirProxy to transform telephoneNumber from "(XXX) YYY-ZZZZ" format to a "Y-ZZZZ" for our VoIP call manager and and have been successful.
How we find out that our VoIP phones have feature that lets users search by phone number. The problem is that there is no way to input a dash (-) character on the phone so we would like to be able to translate from the "(XXX) YYY-ZZZZ" format that is stored in LDAP to "YZZZZ",
Anyone have suggestions on how to do this? (We know we can create a local attribute in the LDAP master in the format YZZZZ and have DPS return that attribute as telephoneNumber, but we are hoping we can do the transformation on the fly.)
    Thanks.

I'm on the roads for a few weeks and have limited bandwith but here is what I did recently with the DPS version not released yet. Hope this works with DPS 6.3
I created 3 transformations and associated them with the dataview, assuming phoneNumber looks like (XXX) YYY-ZZZZ
In the example below, reworked number is returned in attr yz
    - step1 : extract trailing Y
    - attribute name : y // temp attr
    - model : mapping
    - transformation: add value
    - viewValue : substring(${phoneNumber}, 7, 8)
    - internalValue: ${xxxx} // dont care
    -step2 : extract ZZZZ
    - attribute name : z // temp attr
    - model : mapping
    - transformation: add value
    - viewValue : substring(${phoneNumber}, 10)
    - internalValue: ${zzzz} // dont care
    - viewValue : substring(${phoneNumber}, 7, 8)
    - internalValue: ${xxxx} // dont care
    -step3 : reconstruct
    - attribute name : xz // temp attr
    - model : mapping
    - transformation: add value
    - viewValue : ${y}${z}
    - internalValue: ${y}${z}
Note that this would work for searches only, and when the reworked attr is not present in the search filter.
    Hope this helps

  • Digital Publishing Suite Help | Installing DPS tools

This question was posted in response to the following article: http://helpx.adobe.com/digital-publishing-suite/help/installing-digital-publishing-tools.h tml

    Bob,
The only way this works, even theoretically (as we haven't tested it) is to first set the metadata for Minimum DPS Version and then open up every layout in play previously checked in to the earlier Sprint version and delete the DP Artboards, reset them and re-check in all layouts to update them with the new metadata. With an average issue size growing upwards of 300 dossiers, this becomes an untenable workflow imposition. When we first tried setting this metadata based on Dennis Van Nooij's instructions it did not work. We must plan such metadata strategies up to 3 months in advance of the issue as that's when the creatives begin working on it. To ask them to open up 500-700 layouts in the "transition" issues between Sprint updates and recheck them in is unreasonable considering our tight deadline cascade. We must retain compatibility with NIM and Google Play embedded readers and these are always lagging behind a Sprint version or two. We are releasing a new custom storefront soon which requires R26 but our folios must stay at R25 and we are not sure for how long we will need to retain this compatibility so the number of layouts that must be redundantly touched by Art/Edit operators under tight deadline turnarounds makes this whole strategy very difficult. Woodwing and Adobe need to understand more deeply the impact of their strategic decisions on the actual workflows of the art depts at the publishers on the front lines. I don't remember having been consulted on this before the installers were pulled out of circulation. There are still many dynamic factors that deeply influence our ability to maintain a healthy and fully operational Woodwing/Adobe eco-system; the only way we have been able to maintain consistency and navigate around the many bugs in the software is to nail down our environment so we can control how the pieces behave. Adobe has pulled this control out from under us.

  • Time limit to download DPS app?

    Dear All,
We're working on historical tours that I'm thinking of publishing through Adobe Digital Publishing Suite rather than through a regular app so that I can include more content and span multiple devices without so much hassle.  I'm a small fish so would probably go with the single edition DPS version.  Once a DPS single edition publication is published and is available for download through the iTunes App store, how long does it remain active for download?  Is it only for the duration of the one year DPS license or does it remain active as long as it remains in the iTunes store?  In other words, how long is the shelf life of a DPS single edition app sold through the iTunes App store?  Will I have to pay every year to keep it in the store, or once it's there, will it remain there?  Thanks.
    Small Town Gal

Yes, you have to keep paying Apple.
No, you don’t pay Adobe except for the initial fee.

  • Adobe DPS Product Catalogs and Apple

I wanted to get some feedback from other DPS users and possibly Adobe. We have a large customer that has asked us to convert their national product catalog into a DPS version. We have integrated audio, video, 360 degree product views and other exciting interactive features. In addition next to many of the items we have plans to add a button that takes the user to the website for more information and ultimately click through to buy the products.
Adobe in much of their marketing materials and case studies mention the DPS platform as being perfect for product catalogs. Beyond the spec work we have done for this client if authorized to move forward does anyone know if Apple would reject a product catalog. There are some DPS catalogs in the Apple store but I have heard different opinions as to whether this would be allowed. Again any insight by Adobe or other users would be appreciated.

    @eastcomms
The customers wouldn't require their own Adobe IDs.  They would just need the username and password associated with the acrobat.com account.  Anyway, Adobe got rid of the system whereby you could invite only those acrobat.com members that you wished to view your folio via the Content Viewer when they login using their own IDs.
But yeah, all the analytics or whatever wouldn't be available so you'd be out of luck there at least.  Still....
    Here's the harsh reality:
There is no way that Apple is going to let you publish a catalog app.  It's never going to happen, and there's no use in even trying.  They've allowed very few of these kinds of 'promotional apps', and have taken many of them down that had been previously allowed.  In addition, Adobe has thus far shown that the marketing/brochure/catalog world isn't something they care about.  They've opted out of any sort of sideloading option that would allow your client to distribute folios via their own server, and the Enterprise package is so ridiculously priced that all but the most massive companies can't afford it.  $5000 a month?  Pfft.
Adobe continues to look upon DPS soley as a platform delivery system for magazines, and that's fantastically short-sighted.  If I were heading up the DPS team over there, the very first thing I'd do is open the entire platform up to corporations and business who wish to publish in-house and client facing materials.  My God, the money to be made with REASONABLY priced Enterprise packages is astounding.  I kid you not, I just had 2 meetings today where teams are absolutely loving the DPS platform, but cannot even remotely justify the enormous per month fee associated with the Enterprise package.  Adobe forgets that it's individual departments, not the corporation as a whole, that need to foot the bill.  Unless you're Conde Nast, I suppose.  But for the rest of us who aren't in the publishing industry...
The absolute best thing you could do for your client is direct them to someone who can make a custom app; one that can be distributed from their servers via a web-based registration and download system.  If they've got the chops they can even build-in a tracking system.  It's going to be far cheaper and way more flexible at this point when compared to Enterprise DPS.  Take a cut off the top as a referral fee if need be.

  • DPS and simple Edge animation - help

    Hi-
I am having problems getting a very simple edge animation to work in my adobe digital publishing folio.
I have several kinds of other advanced web overlays using css3 transformations, other using jquery that work perfectly.
I thought I would save some time and try using edge for one simple animation, but nothing shows in the content overlay desktop preview or the ipad previewer. Or sometimes it all just spins and spins the desktop previewer never launches, and I have to force quit out of InDesign and restart my computer.
I have tried uploading the whole file folder as HTMLResources.zip as well as just linking to the index.html file.
My InDesign DPS is the most recent version CS 5.5 and Edge is the most recent preview.
I have also tried these tips - that were posed in a previous thread:
The first tip is to rename the InDesign layer after placing the animation.
In the Layers panel locate the sub-layer that represents the placed HTML. It may be named <rectangle>. You can locate it more easily if the animation is selected. When an object is selected the square to the right of the object will display in color.
Rename the sub-layer in such a way that removes the angle brackets. (Anything meaningful, just no brackets.) There’s some evidence that the angle brackets are causing issues when the content goes to DPS.
The next tip is around settings for making the animation play when you display the page. Here are the settings.
    Auto-play = ON
    Delay = 0.125
Can anyone see something that I may be doing wrong? Is Edge compatible with DPS?
    Thank you!

It seems to me that the culprit lies in the generic name of the object <rectangle>, not necessarily in the Edge animation.
I had an issue with a simple button object that went away after renaming <rectangle> (the contents of the button was a simple rectangle filled with a RGB color) to something else.
The issue leads to a none working button in the Desktop Content Viewer to preview the folio or the article.
