Drawing a music stave

Pleas help, i'm behind a deadline, whine whine.
Basically all these (all 3) class's worked seperatley but when i put them together the Note does not display on the stave
Write3001 - class accepts input from users (ie user inputs a chord name)
Stave Class - draws the five lines of a stave and sends the start co-ordinates (depending on the note) to the note class
note class - draws a note with the co-ordinates given to it:
source (this is justthe basic shell)
* user can input a chord name in an edit box
* and the chord is written on a stave diagram
//ie musical notation
* uses stavediagram class which calls appropriate
public class WriteChord3001 extends javax.swing.JFrame {
private JPanel staveDiagramPane;
public WriteChord3001() {
     ...private JTextField input;
//stave diagram pane*****************************
//displays appropriate stave diagram
staveDiagramPane = new JPanel(new BorderLayout());
staveDiagramPane.add(new StaveDiagram());
box.add(staveDiagramPane);
pack();
setVisible(true);
public void buildInput()
String chord;
staveDiagramPane.add(new StaveDiagram(chord));
pack();
kbPane.repaint();
public static void main (String args[]) {
new WriteChord3001 ().show ();
//inner class defining the StaveDiagram
class StaveDiagram extends JPanel
public StaveDiagram()
setLayout (new BorderLayout());
buildOutput();
public void paint(Graphics g)
//paints the stave lines
public void buildOutput()
     ///here's the problem part:
staveDiagramPane.add(new Note(x,y,notetype));
pack();
staveDiagramPane.repaint();
//inner class defining a note
class Note extends JPanel
public Note(int x,int y, String s)
initComponents ();
//set note type *****************************
          // ie. crotchet or quaver etc.
//***********drawing notes:
public void paint(Graphics g)
g.drawOval(x,y,size,size);
//=================================================
//end of note class
//=================================================
//end of StaveDiagram class
the end

Well, it never could work at all!!!
So you get a JFrame, put a JPanel (staveDiagramPane) on it, put another JPanel (staveDiagram) into it, and each note is ANOTHER JPanel the second JPanel is supposed to add on the first JPanel? It's mad!!!
First of all, you won't see anything just because this is not the way BorderLayout is supposed to work! You can't simply add a component (not specifying where you want to add it - i.e. BorderLayout.CENTER, i suppose...). Second, why don't you simply use one JComponent (call It StaveComponent) whose paint() method draws both the diagram and notes (you can represent them defining one class that ineriths from Object: a note is NOT a Component nor a JPanel!)?
Hope it helps...

    Hi Christoffer,
    Thanks for the reply, excellent information! I was a bit struggling with the availability of the tokenGroups attribute, but your info makes it pretty clear.
    Do you also happen to have experience with the LDAP_MATCHING_RULE_IN_CHAIN method to retrieve nested groups? It seems to perform pretty well, retrieves all nested groups using the memberOf attribute and works on all AD environments (W2K3 SP2 or higher).
    Richard Mueller did a performance test using both methods:

  • My second ipod classic (120g) cannot draw in music

    I have my first ipod classic (120),it work well.
    Recently I boung my second ipod classic for my wife.
    Both we want to use same itune library which build by my first ipod, but we want some different contents between these two ipod.
    I found when my second ipod connecting with itunes, I cannot draw music in, from
    itune library which make by first one.
    After I upgraded itune software to 8.0.2, finally I found some musics can be drowed in, but some musics cannot.
    But My first ipod always work normally.
    I bring this second ipod to the two ipod shops which near my home, it shows ok, every music can be drawed in. So they told me they cannot help me.
    Would you please give me some idea?

    Here is so cold, nobody want to help me.
    Any, I solved this issue by myself.
    Some music can be draw to ipod, and some music cannot, just due to the link
    betwwen musics and itune was destoried. So that if you want to draw the musics
    which link destoried, it not allow you to do because it cannot link to the target music.
    To solve it is quite simple, if your itune folder still keep all music fles.
    If you had same issue, please follow the following step carefully.
    1. Back up your itune folder to safety place, like other hard disk or folder.
    * This is very important step, without it you may lost all you have.
    2. Delete all music

  • Viewing in music notation.

    I have the latest garageband on my computer, I have followed all of the instructions, and read all the help topics and I still can't figure out how to view the music as standard music notation. Someone please help!! P.S.--and don't say to select a software instrument region and click the notation view button because obviously I know that but where on earth is the notation view button (and dont say in the upper right hand corner of the editors head area)
    MacBook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2GHz Intel Core Duo, 1GB RAM

    Double click in the region you want to view (make sure it's a software instrument and ther is actually some music there!)
    This will open up the track edit window.
    Bottom left hand corner of the track edit window (below the "note velocity") you'll see a double box. The left hand box has two "dashes" in and the right hand box has a note in. Click on the note and that brings up the music stav. Click on the dashes and you get the piano roll representation.
    Cheers
    Dick

  • Multiple ipods, one computer: HELP!!

    We have bought two ipod nanos for our family. I had used the CD to download one, and then used the 2nd CD that came with the 2nd ipod to download the 2nd nano. before installing the 2nd ipod, the computer required me to uninstall the first one. Did I even need to install the software for the 2nd ipod if I had already installed the software for the first one? How do you get two ipods set up on one computer?!?!

    ITunes can handle many iPods! The only downside of sharing the same iTunes music library, is if both persons have dramatically different musical tastes, they may become frustrated when they have to listen to the other person's music.
    This is one of the reasons to use playlists, you can configure each person's iPod nano to sync up to specific playlists of music that each specific person likes to listen to, this way two people get dramatically different content on their iPods without having to manually move music back and forth to their iPods!
    To configure the iPods, attach an iPod to the computer, select preferences and select the iPod tab. In the music subtab, select the specific playlists you want the iPod to draw its music from. Repeat for the second iPod and choose the appropriate playlists for that person's taste.
    If you are also going to display photos on your nano, realize that the iPod loads music first, photos second. If the music playlists exceed the capacity of the nano, it will only load music. To help control this, you can put size limits on your larger playlists to make sure that there is still room on your nano for photos...
    welcome to the power of iTunes & iPod!

  • Backing up iTunes on external hard drive

    I'm getting a new computer. How can I back up my all of my musice on iTunes onto my external hard drive so I can move it all onto my new computer? Every time I try to do this iTunes tells me to put it on a CD.

    Instead of using ITunes - which doesn't seem to be designed for people with laptops... - use your own machine's back up, or copy function.
    Basically copy the Itunes music folder onto the external.
    Then do the same copy to put the folder on your new computer. Then tell Itunes where the music is and use the import folder to make it draw the music into the library.
    Manual, boring, but better than anything Apple have designed for this fairly common scenario...

  • Young library is looking for it's way

    Good day!
    Two and a half years have past and I think I've done something good. I've written a library to draw notes (music text) on screen. Library is based on swing (it extends JPanel... and that's all ;D). I've made some applications with that library, and I feel they work fine.
    Days passing, and in 4 months I'm ending my studying. I'll have to find a job. I'm dreaming in working with that library as my job (these days I'm spending all my days developing it, it blocked my job career until know) - when I'll have job, my library will slow down with its development (or even project will die).
    State of the library is as following:
    - about 180 classes (with enums, interfaces)
    - class names generaly are not in english and have no documentation
    - also the are no tutorials (however it can be done easly, I'm also under email)
    - last weeks I've spend on trying to make library easy to use (for users without understanding all it's mechanism). I made great progress, but still it's not as easy (and never will be, because there are many possibilities in drawing notes on screen)
    - website with applications using that library is not in english (these are standard jars or applets). I'm planning translating it next few weeks
    So today I'm standing face to face with hard decision: What can I do with that library? I don't want it on GPL license - I want it to be able to use in commercial projects (it is already used so). I'm also a bit afraid of making it LGPL (I was working 2,5 years on it and know I should just throw it away and forget about it? See it's a great passion for me.). I want other developers to be able to use it ... but see - only volunteering is not good way to live - I'm afraid I will not be able develop/suport library and earn some money simultanously.
    Library is created by me and only me.
    Sorry for posting that thread in that forum - I didn't know were I can write it. Sorry for my english as well - It's not my homelanguage.
    Thanks ahead for any questions/suggestions/help.
    Christopher Mroczek

    Congrats. However I don't understand the current state of the library:
    - you say it is already used in commercial projects? How come? Did you license this to the business - then I'm amazed by your marketing skills - or did you develop this as an internship for this business - then I really advise you to contact a lawyer as you may not be allowed to license a derivative of this on your own - ?
    - other than that, have you studied the prospective commercial market for this library? I'm a worthless marketer, but the only usage I could see are:
    - - music score editor software (edit scores meant to be read by humans)
    - - music tutorial software
    - - sequencer editor software (edit scores or sequences meant to be read by sequencers driving instruments
    For the first two categories, I would say that the UI is probably the main differentiator. So, two companies are likely to try to sell two very different UIs; so, I doubt that you could sell the same library to both companies - unless you make it very flexible, in which case the price (time you invest out of your own life) is likely to be higher than what the specific company would invest on a custom one-shot UI (not reusable library).
    For the 3rd one, in addition to the previous argument, I feel that such softwares do not rely on the classical scores notation, but merely on "electronic sequencing" notations (timeline with bars).
    So, in addition to Walter's advice above I would suggest you also turn to a marketer/salesperson. Since you are likely on your own, you could try to contact editors of such softwares (including instrument manufacturers, for which software is not their core business): if they don't buy your library, you may at least demonstrate yourself as an adequate developer for their market.
    N.B.: I wish you all the best, and success with selling your stuff, and don't be turned down by my pessimism - fortunately for the world's economy, marketeers have far more, and far more adequate, ideas than I have!

  • How to handle very wide EPS images?

    Hello,
    I am working on a project where we need to be able to open very wide EPS images in photoshop, but seems that the program has some limit. The image contains a printed music stave
    Please, see the attached eps file: I am able to open it with Preview (MacOS) despite it is truncated in some way, but I am completely unable to open it with Photoshop. Is there any other possible program to try if Photoshop fails?
    Any thoughts are very welcome.
    Thank you in advance!
    Best,
    Fabrizio

    Thank you guys and sorry for the automresponder, I really don't know how to avoid that!
    Anyway, as you can see all the files are truncaed. Any solution? It's interesting how the EPS file actually includes hte complete file but no program seems to be capable to display it entirely.
    Thank you again.
    Best,

  • Lines in Indd viewed onscreen in PDF

    Hi,
    I know many posts have been written about this and after scanning them, I still see no solution apart from changing an Acrobat setting.
    My document (and logo) has a musical stave in it --> 5 thin lines.
    My problems is that while I know it will print fine, I also need it to show up in PDF correctly as the newsletter will be sent to 500+ people by email. I know I can turn off "enhance thin lines" settings but obviously can't do this on other peoples computers and can't really expect them to do so either.
    I cannot believe there is no solution for this.
    Please help.

    So in the end a designer friend found a very workable solution.
    Reduce line size.
    Add transparency (i.e 40%)
    Generate pdf.
    It means having a different file for print and screen and the lines are a bit lighter than in initial design but the solution really helps keep the lines and the text readable.
    Hope this helps anyone seaching for this in the future.

  • How To Select All Songs In An Album To Play Them?

    How can I easily select all songs in one album to play them?
    Now I have to click the checkbox for each individual song. Surely, there is a shortcut for this??? I keep the library sorted by album. And, no, I am not going to do playlists.
    And, by the way, why isn't there a detailed manual showing how to use the product?

    cochranjk2 wrote:
    If you turn on the Browser while in that list view, then the album art continues to display when you select a single album from the browser pane.
    The browser has three columns. The right hand column lists the albums without album art. I found no way to change that behavior. Yes, I can search for the album by name, but that's not what I would normally do.
    The album art continues to be displayed in the area below the Browser.
    Why are you closing the Browser? You can navigate away from the window with the Browser in it and edit data on any of your other tracks. When you come back, the album you selected will still be selected, and it will stop playing at the end.
    (I'm also not sure what you mean by "go back to the Library". When you turn on the Browser, you're still in your Library; it's just a different view mode. Are you navigating to a different playlist?)
    I close the browser so I can see the list of tracks and albums in the library. With the browser open and one album selected (to play it), it is the only album visible in the library. I found no way to "navigate away from the window with the browser" - the browser is the only view of the library available at that point. I am not using playlists at all (except for syncing with my iPhone and occasionally to burn a CD) so, no, I am not navigating to a different (or any) playlist.
    Aha. That's easy enough to fix: create a playlist (called "Editing" or something) containing all of your music. (You could make it a smart playlist, using the rule "Date added is after 1/1/1900"). Then, while leaving the Browser open in your main library window, you can navigate to your Editing playlist to do all your editing. Then your album will remain selected, and keep playing, in the main library.
    iTunes's functionality is dependent on playlists. There are solutions to the problems you are having, but trying to solve problems without using any playlists is like asking for help with organizing things on the Desktop without wanting to use folders.
    Here's another solution: Leave everything checked, as I said above. Create an empty playlist, and tell Party Shuffle to use that empty playlist as its source. Then, if you highlight tracks, control-click them, and choose "Play next in Party Shuffle," Party Shuffle will add those tracks and play only them, then stop (because it will try to draw the next track from the empty playlist, and not find anything). I just tested this; it works fine.
    Sorry, but I have no idea what you are talking about. After messing around for 20 minutes or more, trying the iTunes (pitiful) help, and finding nothing usable about "Party Shuffle" (the so called help describes things I was unable to locate -- no Party Shuffle playlist, no source pop-up menu, etc.), I quit.
    Step-by-step:
    1) In Preferences > General, make sure the "Party Shuffle" checkbox is checked in the "Show:" options.
    2) Close Preferences, then select the Party Shuffle icon in the Playlists column on the left of your iTunes window. It's probably populated with random songs from your library at this point.
    3) Create a new playlist (command-N), but don't add any songs to it. Name it "Empty" or something similar.
    4) In the Party Shuffle playlist, in the lower left-hand corner, there is a drop-down menu labeled "Source". Select your Empty playlist from that menu. (iTunes will probably warn you that the playlist you selected is empty.) Note that the Party Shuffle playlist depopulates, because it is drawing its music from an empty playlist.
    5) Return to your library, highlight an album (or any group of songs), and control-click any of the tracks. Select "Play next in Party Shuffle" from the contextual menu that appears.
    Party shuffle will play the tracks you selected. When it gets to the end of the selection, it will try to draw a random track from the Empty playlist, and fail, and stop playing. You can then continue to edit song information in your library, or navigate to the Party Shuffle playlist if you want see what's playing and look at the album art that's being played.
    This solution does exactly what you asked for.

  • Fader movement help

    i use to be able to do this, but my slow brain has forgotten and now its driving me nuts
    please assist me in being able to lower the fader to an exact number instead of it skipping
    for example on my output 1-2 channel it skips from 2.9 to 3.1
    I want 3.0
    how can I do this
    dont I hold something down when moving it?
    thanks for ur time
    and help
    i cant recall for some reason

    hehehehe
    thats soo funny
    -3db doesn't exactly means pull your faders down till it says -3db
    what i mean is, leave your master fader set to 0db but the mix should not go over -3db
    not necessary it has to be on -3db straight, its impossible unless you do a brickwall mix and put the master down (which is not a good idea)
    1: set the master fader to 0db
    2: start mixing with all the faders down/ roll off
    3: pick your best sound that is the back bone of the song ( mine is usually kick or bass)
    4: set the back bone to around -12 then build the rest of the instruments around the back bone ( so its the your skeleton standing and the flesh and fat and blood build around it to make you) weird but thats how i draw my music, like ART
    5: you'll find out that after building the rest of the sounds around it, it'll push gradually up till -3db or -2.5db same thing
    thats what i mean by -3db
    i don't mean boost all the tracks up till they start clipping then move the master fader down to -3db thats wrong
    because if a channel distorts by it self then moving the master fader is not gonna help it,
    sorry if i didn't explain properly before, i hope you got the idea now

  • Bug: Music app name in app drawer not displayed correctly in my language

    After the app name changed from Walkman to Music, in app drawer the name in Greek is "Μουσ." insteed of "Μουσικη" and in all other apps the titles are full without any "." If phone language is changed to english or other languages the "Music" is displayed fully.
    Is there any way to change that ? Kind of silly request but it doesn't look good, to me at least !
    Thanks

    So I translated that word and according to Google it says "Museum on" which isn't good however for feedback like this you would need to forward this feedback to Xperia care/support http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/support/contact-us/

  • When trying to load onto my sons ipod shuffle i keep getting the message 'the ipod update server could not be contacted'. The ipod has never been used and has been sitting in a drawer.  It seem to charge but I cannot load any music for him.

    Should say, I have tried altering the LAN setting to 'automatically detect settings', updating itunes etc but nothing has worked.  I have a very unhappy 6 year old!

    You should not get that message if you are simply trying to load the shuffle with songs from your iTunes library.  If iTunes is trying to Update or Restore the shuffle, and you get that message, try the suggestions in this article

  • How Rock Guitar Legend Slash Hopes to Hack Music Discovery Apps

    Editor's Note: What do you guys think about the concept of apps helping artists with music discovery? Does it have legs? Is it monetizeable? Read and then let us know your thoughts on this thread.--ks

    Glance at this year’s SXSW schedule and “Slashathon” might sound like an all-night 80s horror flick screening. In reality, the title is fairly literal: rock guitarist Slash is hosting an artist-focused hackathon on Wednesday with the hopes of drawing in crowds at the perfect mid-point between SXSW’s Interactive and Music sessions.
    “It was an idea that came up when we were brainstorming the launch of our new record,” Slash, also uncommonly known as Saul Hudson, tells The Next Web in a phone interview. “I’m sure there are a lot of people out there who don’t have a platform to talk about new tech ideas for music, so we hope that the event helps inspire software developers to create something unique in the spur of the moment.”
    Despite having been involved in several apps and video games, Slash says he’s not a particularly techie person, and is mostly interested in music recording apps that aid artists on the go. “I travel a lot, so tuner apps or things that enhance sound recordings are what I’m most interested in.”
    A fan of Spotify and Pandora, the guitarist says music streaming apps are great for artists to both discover new music and share with fans, and he hopes to see more apps devoted to helping artists gain exposure.
    “This is what people do now: they go to their computers and smartphones and find new music, shows, and artists,” Slash says. “Spotify and Pandora have definitely helped soften the blow on musical piracy… making records is a huge business now, and these apps help artists feel like they’re not doing it for nothing.”
    While he doesn’t intend for the Slashathon to necessarily “solve” problems — as most startups tend to focus on — he would like to see music discovery become more catered to recording artists, not just consumers.
    “I’d like to see the trend continue on apps that help artists get the word out about their new records and local shows,” he says.
    It’s not surprising that a musician like Slash is keen on discovering new music. Thanks to Guitar Hero’s repopularization of “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” it’s hard to escape a dive bar or TV commercial without the familiar rock rhythms, even for Slash himself.
    But of course, he’s grateful for the multi-generational love that’s passed along, decades after the song emerged.
    “I was definitely more sick of it when we first wrote, recorded, and played it,” Slash says. “But over the years… it’s one of those things where you have to appreciate that a lot of people still like it.”
    The SXSW Slashathon takes place at Capital Factory, and begins at 9 AM on March 12.

  • Can't add music to ipod touch even though computer and itunes recognize it

    I have an ipod touch 4th generation that has suddenly stopped allowing me to add any music to it. It worked absolutely great with no problems for about a year  and suddenly when I load it up on itunes I can't add any music to it at all. if I try and drag any music from my computer on to it, I get this no icon as you can see
    Same if I try and add music from my itunes library.
    I've done pretty much everything I can think of to try and fix this, I've completely wiped itunes from my computer and re-installed, I've made sure that my ipods ios is up to date, I've reset my ipod, I've completely erased my ipod and restored it to factory settings. I have an old backup but it fails every time I try and restore it, saying that the backup session failed. I've tried resetting the lockdown folder as recommended but when I delete it, itunes can't connect to my ipod, so I ended up restoring the lockdown folder back to where it was from my trash can. I've made sure all my drivers are up to date and my computer is AMD so i know its not an intel chipset/ipod issue. I've turned off my antivirus and computer security programs and that made no difference at all.
    These problems are the same when tried on another computer and I'm sure I've done other things as well but I'm drawing a blank trying to think them up.
    I have an old ipod mini that has absolutely no problems at all using the same itunes and computer so I'm pretty sure this issue is located just on this ipod. I bought it used on amazon so the warranty and service coverage have already expired, so I kinda have to figure out how to fix it myself..
    Anybody help at all with this would be greatly appreciated

    I don't see how it could be windows causing the issue since my other ipod works fine with this installation of windows on this computer and I don't at the moment have anyway to back up what I have on my computer in order to re-install windows, but maybe if nobody else has another solution I'll look into it. Thank you for your help and suggestions
