Drawing a realistic aircraft propeller blade

Find myself a bit stumped on this one. I'm working on a logo that needs to have what appears to be wooden propeller blades (4) projecting from a center hub. I've looked everywhere trying to find some examples on how to draw realistic blades, i.e. proper curves and shading to show pitch etc. not just flower petals, but only come up with sites that have working drawing for manufacturing them. Looked over previous comments from 06/07 but Teri's suggestions only appear to show how to do a polar rotation. Any ideas or sites to search is greatly appreciated.
BTW, using CS3, WIN XP Pro
Thx in advance.

> I did several samplings with LiveTrace to see what the linework might entail.
If I'm reading this comment correctly, you may have a gross misunderstainding of what auto-tracing (LiveTrace) is all about.
In almost all cases, running an auto trace on a raster image would in no way yield results that one would use as an "instructional guide" for the proper way to draw something deliberately from scratch. An auto trace program simply tries to scribe a path around a group of contiguous same-colored pixels. Even doing that, its result is seldom indicative of the *optimum* path that could be drawn to describe the intended shape. Most autotrace programs have no "intelligence" to discern what the shape *is supposed to be.*
The following is not meant to beat up on you, so don't take offense. This is one of those kinds of topics which recur here often, so the rest of this is not directed specifically at you, but is offered to all those who have posted (or will) similar questions.
"How do I draw a...." questions like this appear all the time. Such questions are very difficult to answer without alot of guesswork, when the questioner fails to provide any indication of the desired *stylistic* results.
You do not say what part of the illustration you are having trouble with. I assume it is not the sillouette or profile of the whole blade itself, but a treatment of the shading that would be necessary to suggest the twist of the blade.
Shading can be suggested in many different ways, and the problem of shading the surface of a propeller blade is no different from that of any other subject. The method chosen depends upon the desired style, and the practical/ limitations of the intended use.
You only say you are creating a "logo" (a grossly overused term these days), that it needs to specifically be a "wooden" blade, and that you want it to appear "realistic." Those may very well be contradictory requirements.
WhenEVER you use "how do I draw..." and "logo" in the same breath, you really should include some parameters:
- Continuous-tone or Line-art?
- Number of colors?
- Spot color or process color?
- Intended usage? (Print, web, signage, video? All of those? Some of those? Only one of those?)
- Scaling reqirements? (Billboards? Pencil imprints?)
Most actual identity marks ("logos") have to be very versatile in terms of reproduction--everything from full-color print brochures and placement ads to signage to embroidered golf shirts to tiny imprints on ballpoint pens. That usually means that the base logo must be tastefully designed to the lowest common denominator of one or two color line art--which by definition is very stylized and not what one would usually call "realistic." It also may preclude the kind of detail necessary to suggest a specific texture or material (in this case, wood).
You can create "realistic" shading in programs like Illustrator in several ways: Blends, Gradient Fills, or Mesh Gradients. And you can even make them resemble woodgrain. But those techniques imply (at least) continuous-tone artwork, which rules out many common uses of proper identity marks.
You can create highly-stylized, "shading" by employing a number of line art techniques: hatching, parallel lines, dot screens, posterization. But those techniques are not what one would call "realistic."
If you need the design to be robust enough to withstand extreme reduction, then you may have to sacrifice the woodgrain requirement. If the woodgrain requirement is critial or central to the mesage, then you probably will have to come up with a way to depict it and sacrifice something else; for example design the mark as a zoomed-in detail of the propeller, that symbolically suggests a twist, rather than trying to depict an entire propeller.
"How to draw a...." questions, whether from vector newcomers or longtime users, are most of the fun in this forum. But I (and others here) could draw "propellers" all day long and still not hit upon what you need or have in mind. So when the question is vague, or ambiguous, we often just pass. That's why a stylistic example and/or some definitive parameters are needed.

  • 6950 Twin FROZR III Fan blade BROKE!!!!Help!

    when i was playing a game, i turned the fan to 80% fan speed and this happened :( the card is 1 week old and newegg can't help me...What can i do... if i leave the fan like this it will die because its unbalanced

    My advice is best RMA it as is, msi/reseller normally will not accept modified stuffs.
    Also the FAN is a new special design introduced with Twin Frozr III Thermal Design called Propeller Blade fan. [images attached]
    * MSI  Propeller  Blade  technology  generates  20%  more  airflow  than  traditional
    design, and the airflow covers wider area for the better heat dissipation. Twin Frozr
    III thermal design provides 11°C cooler & 13.9dB quieter than reference cooler .
    20% More Airflow with Exclusive Propeller Blade Technology
    The MSI R6950 Twin Frozr III Power Edition is equipped with the latest Twin Frozr III dual fan thermal solution. The MSI-exclusive Propeller Blade technology features air channels on the edge of the blades to expand total airflow by up to 20%! The twin 8cm PWM fans, heat pipe technology, large surface-area nickel-plated copper base and high fin density all serve to rapidly draw excess heat away from the graphics card. Under a full load, the R6950 Twin Frozr III Power Edition GPU runs 11˚C cooler than the reference design, and noise emission is reduced by 13.9 dB— validating the superior cooling performance and silent running advantages of the Twin Frozr III.
    Since active users may use their graphics cards for a variety of applications, MSI developed the exclusive P/S Switch function for controlling the speed of the fans. The Performance Mode is used to achieve an optimal cooling performance, helping to keep the GPU cool even under high loads. For applications or settings where noiselessness is preferred, the Silent Mode can be utilized as the appropriate mode for gaming or movies, ensuring that fan noise is kept to a minimum while still receiving outstanding cooling performance.
    if i RMA it they said i probably wont get a TF3 back, i want a TF3 I paid for a tf3. or atleast the fan....they wont even sell me a fan..and to rma it i need to pay 45$+shipping..think im gonna file a bbb on newegg..
    msi wont even let me buy a replacement fan -_-

  • How to make stills duration less than 00:00:00:01 ?

    Hi,
    This may seem an odd request, but I have a sequence of several stills of a propeller blade on a model, sort of time lapse, move and photo etc, which when played together rotates the prop. They are currently set to 00:00:00:01 and play loop sees a very slow rotation. I thus need to make them even less than that duration. Is that possible and how is it done ? They currently form the project. R/click duration and altering 01 to 001 doesnt work, the last two numbers being frame number and 25fps is the project value.
    Perhaps I need to make the project more than 25fps, so that 00:00:00:01 which means 1 frame I presume, will be seen as far less of a second than 1/25th ? How do I set project to a higher fps if this is the solution ?   Then would I save out or export the finished film as a 25fps clip to use elsewhere ?
    I also found it silly that I had to right click on each stills clip in timelie and choose duration. I tried selecting all of them and r/click duration but duration was greyed out. If I had a lot there, surely there must be a way of making all their durations the same amount at once ?
    I am unable to zoom the timeline to drag their size less.
    Envirographics

    Hi,
    Thanks for the sugestions.
    I have not yet transferred a Sequence, I have created a second sequence and dragged it out as a floating window, then dragged a selection box across my stills and dragged them over to it, but no doubt this isnt the way to make them all a combined duration of say 1 frame. They still have separate properties. How is it done such that I can give them as you say one duration for the entire lot.
    AE no doubt is After Effects. another purchase. Working on it !

  • MSI N770 Lightning.. The Lightning Continues...

    From MSI N680GTX Lightning to the R7970 Lightning, now comes the new N770 Lightning.
    First of all let’s talk about the GTX 770 GPU Chip. It has the same GK104 graphics processor as the GTX 680 have but cranked up. Reference core and boost clocks have been raised to 1046MHz/1085Mhz and the memory speed to 7GT/s.  Aside from this, the GTX 770 GPU Boost has been upgraded to version 2.0, allowing Higher Clocks to punch in more often.
    Comparing: GTX 770 vs GTX 680
    Stream Processor:1536 - 1536
    Texture Units:128 - 128
    ROPs   :32 - 32
    Core Clock:1046Mhz - 1006MHz
    Boost Clock:1085Mhz - 1058MHz
    Memory Clock: 7Ghz GDDR5 - 6Ghz GDDR5
    Memory Bus Width: 256 Bit - 256 Bit
    TDP:230W - 195W
    Transistor Count: 3.5B - 3.5B
    Mftg. Process: 28nm - 28nm
    Now with the N770 Lightning, the video card has been factory overclocked to a core speed of 1150 Mhz (ref. 1046) and a boost clock of 1202 Mhz (ref. 1085) while the memory clock has been kept on a standard speed of 7010 Mhz. The GTX 770 Lightning will also use MSI’s GPU Reactor providing higher power levels and cleaner signals for the GPU. Other components that MSI have integrated into the card are the Military Class IV, voltage check points and 8+8pin PCIE Power connector thus making the video card break limits in the world of overclocking.
    Here are the things you will find upon flipping the front cover of the box…
    For the accessories…
    •Certificate of Quality & Stability
    •Quick User’s Guide
    •Driver Utility Disc
    •SLI Bridge Connector
    •V-Check Point Connectors  (connecting this with your digital multi-meter will show the actual voltages of certain components of the video card like the GPU)
    •2x 6 Pin to 8 Pin Power Connectors
    •DVI to VGA Adapter
    With the Lightning’s TwinFrozr 4 cooler, it promises to bring the video card temps below 60c and at the same time being quiet. It also boast the 2x 10cm Propeller Blade Fan technology which provides higher air volume to the card for faster heat dissipation. Dust Removal technology is also been implemented now in the Lightning series of video cards as it automatically cleans your video card.
    Two SLI bridges on top of the N770 Lightning and to clarify things up, it is only intended for a Tri-SLI configuration.
    Below are three SuperPipes with one being on top which also helps cooling the GPU chip. You can also see at the bottom part of the video card the Golden SSC Military Class IV Components.. These components are no ordinary; they can withstand extreme conditions, run with stability and power efficiency and provides longer lifespan to the video card.
    Checking the back side of the card, back-plate is installed thus making it cooler and to avoid bending the video card. The blue circle thing you see there is the GPU-Reactor – an additional PCB connected at the back of the video card which also lights up when powered up.
    Video Outputs:
    •Dual-link DVI-I x 1
    •Dual-link DVI-D x 1
    •DisplayPort x 1 (version 1.2)
    •HDMI x 1 (version 1.4a)

    Hello,
    About PSU: 450W is not enough for either of them. For 760 or above it is recommended to have 600W (as the minimum) power supply.
    Both cards has similar cooling, but I would prefer lightning edition (hey, it's 770 not 760 which is little bit lower in performance). However if you also look for the design to fit your case, then that's up to you. Obviously if the card will run hot, most likely you will have to reapply thermal paste (very common in case of GPUs).
    Your shop is very limited, but why not use this search, just pick your country Already selected for N770 lightning

  • Checking Out MSI's N680GTX TwinFrozr III 2GD5/OC

    The nice thing about the MSI N680GTX TwinFrozr III 2GD5/OC is the high clocks you get out of the box. Speed is pre-overclocked from 1006MHz Core to 1058MHz with a turbo boost as high as 1.1GHz. Aside from this, the card is equipped with a very nice and silent Twin Frozr III cooler.   With this, you could still push the N680GTX clocks higher while keeping down the temps and worry not of component overheat.
    The card is equipped with Solid Capacitors which lasts up to 10 years, better efficiency, lower temperature and no cap explosion.
    MSI Afterburner on the other hand is bundled with the card for software overclocking but I suggest you to download the latest version of it in the internet.
    Twin Frozr III cooler with 2x 80mm Propeller Blade Fan Technology which provides 20% more airflow. The aluminium brushed gunmetal color of the TwinFrozrIII heatsink cover looks really cool.
    Like all GTX680s, tri-SLI is capable with this SKU/model and additional 2x 6Pins for power. I’m not sure if I mentioned this before but the minimum PSU requirement for the video card is only 550W 30A for the 12V.
    I just noticed it now and I’m quite surprised that there are two heatpipes on the top area of the card thus for better heat dissipation.
    3x 8mm heatpipes at the bottom area. Check out the solid capacitors - all lined up.
    Back area of the card. Very clean and neat.
    Just curious about this embedded chip at the back of the card.hmmm…….

      Bernhard, how come your graphics shows as the IGD and not the GTX 580? To be somewhat apples and apples comparison, this is what I get without MVP and a reference GTX 680. This is the GTX 680 @ 1006, same mainboard, same RAM speed of 2133, and CPU as the OP. The CPU was running lower than the OP @ 44X to his 48X, but I also note that his VGA bandwidth is 8X and mine was 16X. I can't run MVP as I don't have a monitor that will adapt (or an adapter) to the onboard 15-pin connection. Mode Screen Res. was 1680X1050 (max for my monitor) along with the AA set @ 4X.
    Settings make a world of difference. Same except Tessellation is set to 'Disabled'.

  • Revamp!!! MSI N580GTX Lightning Extreme Edition VC

    MSI N580GTX Lightning Extreme Edition is a reconstructed N580GTX Lightning but with 3GB DDR5 memory and redesigned Twin FrozrIII cooler (propeller blade fan’s color changes from blue to white if the card gets hot and the fan rotates backwards for 30 seconds each time the computer starts to remove dusts on the fan). The card still has the enhanced voltage controls and power circuitry where the Lightning series stands out. Compared from a regular 580GTX power phase, the EX has 16+1 (12 for the GPU Core, 3 for the memory and 1 for the PLL/VDDC Power).
    At the back area of the card, you will find useful switches for unlocking the Memory, GPU, PLL voltages / Over Current Protection Power Unlocker/ PWM Clock Tuner / and LN2 Bios switch for Cold Bug Fix.
    Below are more in-depth specs of the Lightning EX:
    • Pre-overclocked GPU Core is running at 832 MHz
    • 3072MB GDDR5 4200MHz Memory
    • Video Output Functions – 2x Dual-Link DVI, 1x HDMI and 1x Display Port
    • Compose of Military Class 2 Components for longer lifespan and better overclocking ability (Solid Capacitors, Super Ferrite Chokes, Hi-C Caps, Lightning Power PCB Layer, Copper MOS and Proadilizer)
    • Capable of Two-Way or 3-Way SLI Configuration
    Black colored underneath plate which serves as heatsink for memory and VRM chips. It also acts as support or brace for long video cards so that it won’t slant down once installed.
    Accessories included with the VC Package:
    •Two SLI Bridges for multi GPU configuration
    •2x 6pin Power to 8pin PCIE Power Connector
    •DVI to VGA Connector
    •Software & Utility DVD
    •Manual and Quick Guide
    •V-Check Points Connector
    Lightning EX at stock speed for all the tests.  The only component that I overclocked was the 2600K processor to determine bottlenecks. PhysX was also disabled so that equal comparison can be made against an AMD ATI VC model.

    •Motherboard: Z68A-GD80
    •Memory: Kingston 2x2GB DDR3 2133MHz
    •Harddrive: Kingston SSD VNow+ 128GB

    3dmark06 Result: 24777
    Vantage Result: 25614
    3dmark11 Result: 6535
    Next with the 2600K overclocked at 5.1GHz. Video Card performance did increased. This shows that you have to run your 2600k at least at 4.5 – 4.8GHz to cope up with the Lightning EX’s Power.
    3dmark06 2nd Result: 35384
    Vantage 2nd Result: 28741
    3dmark11 2nd Result: 6815
    N580GTX Lightning is such a powerful card that even at stock settings, power performance is enough to play all latest games in high resolution with extreme detail settings. Then if the power is still enough for you, you could still use the MSI Afterburner Software to juice out more from the video card or configure it in SLI.

    It's only unstable when i'm use the GPU (Games & benchs), not HD videos.
    Most games/bench crashes with default clock @ 1.031v. I tried to overvolted & undervolted the GPU, but my tests were not conclusive. The only way i've found to have all games/benchs stable is to downclock the GPU as I explained in my first post.
    Maybe i need a more accurate GPU voltage ? Is it important to change Memory & Aux voltage too ?
    have you tested with 1050mV for core?

    normally not, but depend what exactly is unstable
    But it should work fine by default as is

  • Where can we find Helikopter propeller spinning?

    Hello,
    Do you know where can I find an alpha chanel clip of just the helikopter propeller spinning? I hate constructing it in a 3D software. I want it ready.
    Thanks

    This took about 5 minutes. In Photoshop I quickly separated the helicopter from the background, separated the horizontal stabilizer from the helicopter, removed the original main rotor and tail rotor.
    Imported into AE as a composition. Added a square solid with a mask shaped like a rotor and another smaller solid with a mask shaped like a tail rotor, made both rotor layers 3D and positioned them and rotated them to match the perspective. Added a camera with a moderately long lens and an expression for each rotor blade to generate the rotation and I'm done.
    Lot's could be done to make this composite more realistic, but you'd have to do the same kind of manipulation to some stock footage also to make that composite completely believable. You'd also be hard pressed to find stock footage that matched the perspective of your helicopter shot.
    You'll find a CS3 project here.
    Pay particular attention to where the anchor point is in relationship to the masks. Take a look at the photoshop file to see how I generated a procedural matte from the red and blue channels to quickly cut out the helicopter. There's nothing complicated about this procedure.
    Enjoy!

  • How to create a realistic rock with depth?

    Hello guys,
    I hope you can help me with this question:
    I am working on a private cartoon project, designing the backgrounds. One of the scences is located in the desert. I really want to create a realistic stone, with depth (like you would in Photoshop with the smudge tool) but I dont really know how.
    I tried the following things so far:
    1) Drawing the shadows ect by hand with the pentool (didnt bring me the results i wanted)
    2) Trying to add a texture (same problem^^)
    3) Trying the gradient mesh tool (It is just not doing what I want)
    So does anyone of you know a good way to create good looking cartoon rocks?
    Does anybody know a tutorial for this? (I didnt find anything in the net)
    Is there a trick to it?
    Thank you very much.

    Thanks for your quick reply.
    Can you explain this a bit more detailed? (I am not particularly an illustrator genuis and no almost nothing about photoshop )
    So you are advising me to draw the rock in illustrator and create the shadows in protoshop and place them behin the image? And make the rock transparent?
    Or you are saying I should trace an Image I made in photoshop?

  • Drawing API and interactivity

    I am about to start this project where the background on a
    full browser flash site has a number of shapes. Ideally and I am
    not sure if this is even realistic, I would like the shapes to have
    a slight mouse interaction. While the mouse will respond to button
    etc in the front, behind the content, on the background, it should
    create slight interaction, such as slight wobbles of the shapes
    there, slight nudges, etc.
    I have used the drawing API for simple things, but I am
    wondering how hard it is to create some more organic shapes. Can I
    have circles that have slight dents in them? Bows? How hard is
    that?

    use the jpegencoder class to encode your jpeg and the urlloader class to send to your asp.  eg, to save mc:
    import JPEGEncoder;
    var bmpd:BitmapData=new BitmapData(mc.width,mc.height);
    bmpd.draw(mc);
    var jpegEnc:JPEGEncoder =  new JPEGEncoder(75);
    var jpegDat:ByteArray = jpegEnc.encode(bmpd);
    var ldr:URLLoader=new URLLoader();
    var header:URLRequestHeader = new URLRequestHeader ("Content-type", "application/octet-stream");
        var url:URLRequest = new URLRequest ("youraspfile.asp?name=snapshot.jpg");
        url.requestHeaders.push(header);
        url.method = URLRequestMethod.POST;
        url.data = jpegDat;
        ldr.load(url);
    in php the image data is
    $GLOBALS["HTTP_RAW_POST_DATA"];
    so you'll need to translate that to asp and save it to a file named by the name variable sent via GET.

  • How would you draw a soccer goal?

    Hi guys,
    this might be really basic for the pro's out there, but I'm
    just a beginner with Fireworks.
    Basically, I'm trying to draw a soccer goal (at least the
    frame of it) making it look like metal. There are styles that
    provide this sort of finish in Fireworks, however, the problem is
    that I cannot come up with a shape for the purpose. If I just draw
    three lines (post, crossbar, post), and apply metal finish to them,
    they look cut off and not very nice. But a rectangular box
    obviously has the bottom line too much.
    How do you do that??
    Thanks for any tips,
    Jan

    Hmm.
    I did a Google search for images of soccer goals. I guess it
    depends on how stylized you want your image to be, or how
    realistic. I think a fairly realistic image would be on the
    difficult side.
    The tricky thing is that you're trying to represent something
    that is made of pipes (usually round), so you need to indicate this
    volume with shading. The shading on the crossbar won't be the same
    as the shading on the uprights. I also noted the welded joints
    where the crossbar attaches to the uprights. Somehow, you need to
    indicate these seams. Another thing that might help you is to use
    an angle which is not straight on. Perspective enhances realism.
    Many of the images I saw showed goals that have more pieces than
    just the uprights and crossbar, either at the top or the bottom to
    hold the net. Then, of course, there's the net. These details will
    help make your image look more realistic, and more like a goal. The
    metallic finish would really be the last thing to add realism. You
    need to get the shapes right, first.
    Before trying to draw a goal, study real ones. Here are a
    couple of different goals:
    goal
    post from rectangular pipe
    goal
    post from round pipe
    And...here's the
    Google
    search for soccer goal images.
    Good luck!

  • How Do I Draw An Angled Straight Line?

    Hello,
    I'm restoring an old B&W photo of my Grandmother walking in Atlanta in around 1932. I'm trying to make the power lines of the trolley cars as realistic as possible. Consequently, I'd like to be able to draw these power lines better than they appear in the photo - I've cloned them in and tried to enhance them from the way they are originally, but they are not as straight and authentic as I would like them to be.
    Of course, I know how to draw a straight perpendicular or horizontal line, but is there also a way to draw them when they are at an angle?
    Where are you, Buko and Lundberg02 - Hope you guys are doing ok.
    Thanks for any help you can muster up.
    Burtron

    Scott,
    I just did it! And to think that I went all that time trying to draw those lines as steady as I could - Wow, I thought that surely Adobe would have a way. I just waited too long to get around to asking.
    What a difference this will make!
    Also, in this same old photo is a building that was torn down long ago, I'm sure, but it's after working with it a while, and using the contrast to bring out the images on this building, I began to realize that the building had more and more images - I mean all over it - It's amazing - I don't think that anyone these days would go to all the trouble that this guy did - whoever he is - That's my next challenge - I need to find out who this architect was. I've done all kinds of searches on google, but to no avail. Going to contact the state archives.
    Do you have any suggestions?
    Thanks Again,
    Burtron

  • Drawing anime on Adobe Photoshop cs4 without a tablet?

    i'm seriously losing my patience with Photoshop bc i can't even draw the outline of an eye without having it all broken and curved. i use the mouse pad thing so its harder for me to focus it. Are there any tutorials or tips that you can share with me?

    Use the selection tools rather than trying to draw freehand.  The pen tool would be a good choice because you can edit the lines after creating them, but the eliptical marquee tool would produce a realistic eye shape, and you can use Select > Transform selection to fine tune.  Then there are Shapes, and if the shape you want it is not already available, Google Photoshop Shapes eye would no doubt find what you are after.  Then there is the grid that you can use with Snap to grid, or custom brushes.....  I bet even the best Photoshop experts use aids and shortcuts to speed up the process, and to help them create cleaner lines.
    But you asked for a tutorial, and Google seems to have lots to chose from
