Drawing roads in freehand

As a complete punter on Freehand (10) I'm struggling with how
to draw lines with black edges and a coloured fill (like on an
Ordnance survey map).
Any ideas?

Tubbs_T
I have never used pen tool for such, probably because of the
myriad of nodes it will produce and a large road map would become
too slow to draw (ok ...I have thousands of roads on mine and it
does grind to a halt ), I also prefer an intelligent map such that
if my 0.15mm black line peeking out under the red line is too thin,
I just alter its line weight. Using styles at the outset makes life
easier still, saves trying to select all the black lines for A
roads to alter their weight.
My method if of use, and I draw maps for a living :-
If using layers as I do, you will have layer names from top
to bottom of :-
Mway blue
primary A rd green
other A rds red
B roads brown
C rds yellow
D rds grey
Mway outline dk blue or black
primary A rds outline black
Other A rds outline black
B rds outline black
C rds outline black
D rds I dont bother with an edge, too thin by then ! even C
rds not vital if yellow strong enough.
Roundabouts on A rds can be red spots or green ones (life
more complex now that O.S. have green and red A rds !) with stroke
of black as edge, or rings with another layer for the black edge.
If altering the black edge of the roads using style , dont forget
the strokes of the roundabouts as a separate task.
All coloured layers sit above the black layers.
all these sit above rivers and those above settlement shapes
and so on.
As for A road over motorway, afraid thats two layers, one for
the black edge, both sited above the rest of the layers, and so on.
I shall look into your method though !

  • Drawing road network

    Hi.
I am developing a traffic simulation and i am having problem with the GUI.
I have always been programming the logic part and i have never done
    a GUI.
In the simulation, I have sever different types of vehicles and road network. I am using an image (gif) to
represent the vehicles. The part I am stuck is with the road network. How can i write a road network,
as for simple example a crossroad with four road on north, sourth, east and west directions.
My vehicle image moves over the road network image, so any idea or help or links on
how to draw the road network in swing will be highly appreciated.

If you do not mean free-hand drawing, java.awt.geom package has tools for drawing lines and shapes. Read the tutorial(s) on Java 2D programming on Sun site and others.

  • Can I import into Illustrator and modify a drawing in Appleworks?

Can I import into Illustrator and modify a drawing in Appleworks?

Depending on the detail/complexity/accuracy of the graphics,  you will not likely find back-and-forth wokflows between PostScript-compatible drawing programs (Illustrator, FreeHand, Canvas, Draw, Xara) and OS-meta format (QuickDraw, Quartz, WMF, EMF) based programs ("Works" or "Office" applications) very satisfying.
You encounter instance-specific caveats stemming from two basic issues:
PostScript compatible drawing programs use cubic Bezier curves; two curve handles per path segment. "Works" or "Office" type drawing modules typically use simpler quadratic Bezier curves; one handle per path segment. So going back and forth between involves geometric translations and re-translations which wreck the practicality of editng the paths. PostScript drawing programs use cubic curves for good reason: more shape control with fewer anchors.
The OS-specific meta formats are really not designed for the device-independent resolution fidelity of commercial print. Resolution in vector drawing? Yes. Vector paths are essentially mathematical formulae for *plotting* curves onto a raster grid. (Everything is eventually rasterized; the practical difference between raster and vector graphics is a matter of when.)
So it's a matter of accuracy; the "fineness" of the theoretical grids the curve-handling format/application is designed to plot upon . Meta formats are more about drawing an acceptable shape onscreen, and you can kind of think of what gets sent to a dumb printing device (one without a PostScript "brain") as a glorified enlarged screenshot. The path objects you draw in a PostScript compatible program that have smooth curves that scale well both upward and downward often translate to meta formats as paths with ugly flats or extra kinks that become apparent when scaled. These caveats are unpredictable and tedious to correct. The bother ends up outweighing the advantages you are seeking.
In a nutshell, that's why Illustrator's effective "recommendation" for exporting to Office applicaitons (Save For Office...) is the lowest-common-denominator approach of defaulting to a common raster format (PNG), even though Windows does have a vector-based format (EMF) which Illustrator can export to.
If what you're trying to do is just a one-way trip from some legacy AppleWorks drawings to Illustrator, you'll need an intermediary translation from .awk to something Illustrator can import. You may be able to find an open-source software for doing that.

This is Illustrator, no matter which version you are using.
It doesn't work like in other programmes and Illustrator's behaviour is often undesired.
There is no good trick that I'm aware of to mimic Draw's or Freehand's way to do it.

  • What software is required?

I want to develop desktop based application inlcuidng animations. Please suggest me with the easiest software and coding language.
The project is basically an accident simulator. We are planning to have set of buttons in the toolbar(draw road, inset car, bike.....). The user has options to draw the road, insert vehicles into the road. Then the user can the map the path of each vehicle using the drag option. Finally a play button which can be used to run the total animation.

Is there a reason each path is it's own object? Do they have

If they don't, you can select the paths that make up the
    different areas
and try using Modify > Alter Path > Join or Modify

Union. You will probably need to remove some anchor points if
    you choose
    one of these options.
Are you aware of the Vector path tool which let's you draw a
    path
freehand? That might be a better option than the Pen tool.

  • Few questions about VBI.

    Hi
We are using VBI in a traffic analysis system.
Here are some questions I meet.
         1.     How to get current zoom level?
For now, I write as below
              var canvas = e.getParameters().canvas;
              var m_Scene = canvas .m_Scene;
              var zoomLevel = m_Scene.GetCurrentZoomlevel();
I think it is not a legal way, and is there any better way to get it?
         2.     How to get the position(longitude and latitude) of the map center?
Is there any method to get them?
         3.     I use Route VO to draw roads on the map. There are almost 3,000 VOs on the map at the same time. It makes a lot of cost on handling mouseover events. Can I shut down it so it can perform better?
         4.     And, is it suitable for me to use in a traffic analysis system?
    That's all.
    Look forward to your reply

sorry for the late reply! It is vacation time at the moment.
1+2. you can retrieve changes in the zoom level and the centerpoint with an event:
See here the details: UI5 Development: Events
    3. as I understood you dynamically build your map and use VOs to display the vector information.
The application should keep the number of objetcs low. I don't know if interactions are needed but using an underlying road map and display only the interactive objects.
    4. it depends a little bit on your use case, I don't have the details. You wrote that you have some performance problems with the mouseover events - processing time consuming methods in mouseover events is critical because the user may moves the mouse quickly. We have done some equivalent use cases showing traffic aggregation over time. But as I said here we need more details.
    I hope that helps .

  • Breaking Down an Image into Tiles- CS3

Hello! It's been a while since I've done anything more complicated than a wavy line in Illustrator, and I have a project in  mind that's a little above my head.
I would like to draw an image freehand in PS, import it to Illustrator, and break it down into 5"x5" numbered tiles that I can then print out and reassemble on a large scale. I'm only assuming that Illustrator would be the program to accomplish this in, so if I'm mistaken, please correct me. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I'm sorry if I was unclear. I do not know how to tile an image in any program. For some reason, my version of Adobe Reader will not allow me to tile or scale my image in printing. Even if it did, does Adobe allow you to set the size of the tiles? They need to be 5x5".
The only information I can find on this in my Google searches relates to the slice tool in PS for making webpages. Do you know of somewhere that would explain the "dedicated page tiling options" in Illustrator you mentioned?

  • Adobe Fireworks vs Illustrator advise needed

    Hi!
Having used Fireworks for the past 6 years i feel that i have reached a limit, With illustrator doing the same thing does it do more? My focus is around web content, creating menus, interactive rollovers etc...
    Any advice/thoughts?
    Many Thanks!
    Steve

Illustrator will not do more than Fireworks in the area of web graphics. Illustrator is primarily print-centric. It (and programs like it) pre-date the widespread proliferation of the web by many years. Web-centric accomodations have been added here and there over the years, but those are like scattered "me, too" features, not the primary thrust.
For example, Illustrator can export various web-centric raster formats, but it can't do much at all in the way of *editing* raster images. It has a few conveniences for getting vector artworks into Flash (often with less-than-optimum results).
Illustrator does have more (and/or different) vector *drawing features* than Fireworks. And its PostScript heritage makes it appropriate for the technical considerations of print (ex: CMYK and spot-color color separations).
So generally, Illustrator (along with its direct competitors) is a general-purpose vector drawing program. Its environment is generally print-centric and static (the fore-mentioned minor hooks toward Flash notwithstanding).
That's important if you are doing commerical work for clients *beyond* just web graphics, because it is usually far better to create for print first and then re-purpose for web than the other way around.
So back to your original question: You might get use out of Illustrator to draw more elaborate (or just different) things than you are accustomed to in Fireworks, and then bring them into Fireworks. But be forewarned, the "old vanguard" vector drawing programs (Illustrator, FreeHand, CorelDraw, Deneba Canvas) are very different from Fireworks in their interface and organization, and among those, Illustrator is (to my mind) the most confused and scattered.
So you'll be in for a significant learning curve. Don't get me wrong; it's certainly not rocket science, nor is it anything to fear. I'm just saying to anticipate some initial frustration and confusion if you expect to just pick it up and use it based on your Fireworks experience. (An AI-only user would also be initially disoriented in Fireworks.)
Bear this in mind also: The fact that Adobe now owns both Illustrator and Fireworks should not in any way lead you to expect the two programs to be similar or even "integrated" to any large degree (yet). Adobe acquired Fireworks when it bought Macromedia. Macromedia apps all follow a radically different (and in my opinion, better) organizational scheme than pre-merger Adobe apps.
You would feel more "at home" in FreeHand than in AI, because both FH and FW follow the Properties Palette "contextual inspector" organizational scheme of Macromedia apps. Plus, Macromedia built features to help "integrate" FW and FH; much as Adobe is now trying to do with AI and FL.
But that avenue is quite dubious now, because Adobe has decided to discontinue FreeHand. Illustrator and Fireworks will feel more an "odd couple" than would FreeHand and Fireworks. It's anyone's guess as to how much effort Adobe will put into making AI and FW work together (or for that matter, the longterm continuance of Fireworks); the focus seems to be toward Flash.

  • Converting png to vector

I have Freehand 10 and have always had a hek of a time trying

No, you can't convert but you can trace.
Tracing means that the program reads outlines from an image
and makes the paths accordingly. The result depends on the quality
of the image. Small low res web graphics cannot be traced very well
because tracing do not have any intelligence whatsoever. Even with
very good images there is a lot of cleaning to do, especially if
there must be vertical and horizontal lines, sharp angles, circles
    etc.
If the image is very simple it is best to put the image to
the background layer and remake it from scratch with drawing tools.
FreeHand, Yes. Import the image into FreeHand and marquee
select the area you want to trace with the trace tool. (The magic
wand icon in the toolbar.) Double click gives the settings. Getting
a good result usually requires fair amount of trial and error.
Sometimes combining parts of several traces work best.

  • KDE4.6 ati radeon hd 5450

    Hi everyone,
At the beginning of this year I got a new Computer. Other than my the Desktop an Laptop-Machines I used before, this one has an ATI Grafik-Card. Because I wanted to use the KDE Desktop effects I installed the proprietary catalyst-drivers.
Almost everything works fine except that moving windows (not resizing windows like I found in other threads) and other 2D-Actions following the mouse-pointer (Like drawing a line freehand in Gimp or doing drag an drop on text in chromium) having a few second delay in following the mouse. Disabling the KDE-Desktop-Effects using Alt-Shift-F12 and everything works fast as expected.
I even tried the xorg-server-catalyst-maximize-fix but without any result.
    Thanks
    Christian

    Find /System/Library/Extensions/ATI5000Controller.kext
(right click and select "Show Package Contents")
find the file info.plist within that kext.
Scroll down a ways until you get to a line called <key>IOPCIMatch</key>, after that should be a <string> line with lots of 0x0 numbers in it.
use some type of texteditor and add the device ID of your video card to the end of that <string>, an HD5450 should be 0x68F91002.
You can find the Device ID by installing the video card in an additional slot and going to "About This Mac" -> "More Info" -> "System Report" -> "Graphics Displays".
You should see Device ID 0x68f9.
Add 1002 to end of that value, so it reads 0x68F91002.
Reboot computer and OSX should now display it as ATI Radeon 5000 with correct memory amount. You can plug it into the main graphics slot. You will not get a white boot screen, but it will eventually show the desktop.

  • Making "seamless" brushes

    Hi everyone.
I understand how to make the brushes, but is there any way to have greater control over how uniform the patterns appear?
For example: I'm trying to create a brush that is made up of tiny beads.  But I can't seem to make one perfectly, as the beads get distorted or chopped off when I attempt to create shapes with the line or pen tools.
And yes, I've tried all of the preferences in the brushes pane, but neither of them works well.
With this bead brush, I would like to write words.  So you can see where I'm going with this.  The letters of the words would be made up of tiny beads (there are fonts like this, except I'd like to colour the beads my own way).
    Any suggestions?
    B.

    Hello Kurt and JETalmage.
    Thanks to both of you.
Using Illustrator CS4.  JET: you were bang on: it WAS the Scatter Brush I was looking for!
    Thanks,
    B
    ******UPDATE*******
Okay - this worked like a charm if I make my brush with only one "bead".  I cann't find a way to make a mulit-coloured bead brush.
Here's what I want to do: create an illustration of a string of beads.  BUT I want to make a brush, so that I can draw a line freehand in any direction and it will create my string of beads WITHOUT some of the beads distorting or squishing up against each other.
So I created one bead, made that a scatter brush and it works well.  Then I created a string of multicoloured beads and did the same thing (only I can't use "scatter' because it doesn't work with multiple beads).  The closest is "pattern", but even with this some of the beads that meet up at the ends get squished and there is distortions - even though I've played around with all of the settings to rectify this.
Is there some other way of achieving the effect that I want, without having to copy and paste one bead at a time??
    Thanks,
    B.

  • Attributes panel - retract handles/reverse path direction?

For the life of me I can't get these buttons to go 'live' for any type of object (they are frustratingly unselectable all the time). Do they actually work or is it just my installation?
    CS6 (16.0.4)
    Mac OS 10.6.8

The reason the buttons are most often grayed (disabled) is because in Illustrator, they are for changing winding direction of subpaths of Compund Paths.
FreeHand's Inspector Palette, does, indeed, have buttons for extending/retracting handles. The half-baked imiltation of that in Illustrator would be the much less capable behavior of the Convert To Smooth and Convert To Corner buttons in the Control Panel (across the top of the main drawing window).
FreeHand also provides a proper Reverse Path command that works on any path, and any number of paths, be they subpaths of Composite Paths or simple paths. Illustrator doesn't, which is why you have to resort to the cumbersome workaround of clicking a path's endPoint with the Pen, thereby making the program think you intend to add segments to that end, and thereby making that end the endPoint (i.e.; changing the path direction if the anchor clicked is not already the endPoint).
