Driver Crashing Issues (R9 280x 3G Gaming)

I am having a problem with my new R9 280x 3G Gaming. I know the drivers are buggy, but I'm not quite sure what the issue is. Sometimes the card is stable, I can run Furmark on it and game and everything seems fine. Then on reboot I will have issues with the driver crashing, sometimes right on boot when the desktop loads. I have tried the drivers supplied on the MSI site as well as the newest 3.11beta9.5 from AMD, both seem to act the same.
I'm not sure if its a bad card or just driver issues. Anyone experience anything similar?
ASUS Z87 Motherboard

R9 280x 3G Gaming
12GB RAM
Windows 7 64

S/N: 602-V277-26SB1310102381
The first driver I installed on it was the 13.11 Beta 9.5 driver from AMD. That had crashing issues, so I uninstalled and installed the driver from MSI. The issue continued. I have now ran driver sweeper and reinstalled the 13.11 Beta 9.5 and it has been stable for the last day or so.
Current vBIOS is: 015.040.000.000.003435 (113-C3865000-G77)
The 6870 from my old machine seemed to work fine in this unit, though I did not do too much testing with it.
I am using a Thermaltake TR2 850W PSU.

  • 870A-G54 - Possible overheating caused by too much ram? Display driver crashes

Greetings, I have a 870A-G54. I've had multiple issues with several video cards prompting me with a "display driver has stopped responding and has recovered" error. Each video card having it's own unique fix. I've come to the conclusion that it's another piece of hardware in my system that is the root of the problem; and not the video cards. I've noticed that the CPU during "the crash" hits about 60c; usually when playing video games. After a reboot, I can play games for a couple more hours before getting the error again. I'm running 16gb of ram on Windows 7 ultimate. Yesterday I decided to remove 8gb of ram to see if the CPU got "hot" again (only leaving the sticks in bay 3 and 4 in). I had a 4 hour session of gaming and it didn't crash. Note, I have the latest bios installed and a Power Supply that shouldn't have issues powering the whole thing; 850w gold rated PSU. I'm currently running a 6950 video card, and all of the settings are stock; no over clocking in any way. I have a hardware monitor installed that shows with my 16gb of ram that my cpu idles at 41-43c. During a intense gaming session going up to 60c. Yesterday after removing the other 8gb (two sticks of 4gb), it never went above 50c. My CPU is well ventilated. I've contemplated water cooling the CPU if that would resolve the issue. But I'd hate to fork over more money to an already expensive system if I don't have to. I've also wondered if it's just a bad ram stick, or bad ram bay on the motherboard. :\
Any suggestions here would be appreciated! Thanks!

So, I conducted several tests over the last couple of days. Now, I understand that mismatching ram could (and probably is) potentially causing the overheat problem. But... I kind of started looking at fundamentals. I have to sets for DDR3. One pair is Patriot sector 5 ram, the other is a set of Dominator ram. Now, I've noticed that I've seem to always have this driver crash issue. But I had always thought it was the video card. Only until recently I started seeing/noticing that the cpu was getting very hot when the driver would crash. On Wednesday I removed the ram in slots 1 and 2 (the Dominator ram), and only ran with the ram in 3 and 4 (Patriot). It ran fine all night. I then ran some heat tests, with the same ram in bays 1 and 2. When the Patriot ram was in those two slots, it ran cooler. When the Dominator was in, it ran hotter. The Dominator's builtin heat-sinks pretty much rest right next the CPU's heatsink (and restrict air flow). It re-arranged the ram so the Dominators are in 3 and 4. And the Sector 5 are in 1 and 2. It worked all night yesterday, CPU didn't get any hotter that 48c while having multiple programs running. Looking at it now, the design of this MB is pretty bad, there should be a little more space between the CPU and the ram. In any case, I will follow up if it continues to crash due to heating issues. I know it's probably cheaper to get new ram, but I'm playing with the idea of just getting a better heat-sink for the CPU (WATER COOLED)!

  • Hard Drive Crash-round 2

Last night, I'm pretty sure my Macbook hard drive crashed. AGAIN. I first ordered it online on July 5th of 2007 brand new right from the Apple Store. On January 11th of 2008, my first hard drive crashed. System locked up, heard clicking under the keyboard, blinking folder with a question mark inside of it whenever it was powered on. I took it to the Apple store, the Genius Bar guy took the HD out and checked it-dead. It was replaced on the 17th-I kept the receipt just incase. Last night I was typing a paper up for my Child Psych class when iTunes stopped responding. When I tried to quit it (command+q), nothing happened. I clicked the Apple in the top left hand corner to force quit it, and the whole system locked up. I heard clicking under the keyboard again, so I manually shut it off. And now I have the same blinking folder with the question mark again, and this time it even makes a beeping sound for me sometimes.
I called Apple this afternoon, and they keep wanting me to reset this, reset that, try this and try that. I've tried everything just as I did in January when this first happened, and no luck again. I was told to make an appointment at the nearest store (which is 65 miles away, 130 round trip) so they could tell me it was dead and give me a new one just to crash again in a few months and I lose everything all over again.
Anyway, the whole point of this is to find out what could be causing me to lose HD after HD? I really know nothing about Macs as a whole except for hard drive crashing issue; I've only used the OS for a little over a year so I'm putting this out there to anyone who knows more about them than I do. The machine mainly stays on my computer desk, but sometimes it ventures over to my bed. I charge it as needed, it doesn't leave the house (been too scared to do a lot with it since the first crash) so isn't slammed around in a backpack or dropped. Could it be actual hardware inside that is causing the failures, and if so, is that something that Apple could potentially check out and diagnose?
    Thanks!

Same for me, MacBook bought in December 2006 in Germany with 2 GHz Processor, 2 GB of RAM and 160 GB hard drive,
first drive crashed in december 2007, second drive just crashed in november 2008,
both drives were the Hitachi HTS541616J9SA00
now the replaced drive is again a Hitachi HTS541616J9SA00
I asked the Apple Service Center to put in a drive of another brand (I would pay the difference to the drive covered by the Apple Warranty Program) but Apple said they could only put in the HTS541616J9SA00 drive, otherwise I would need to pay the entire price of a different hard drive of my choice.
After doing some research on the internet, the Hitachi HTS541616J9SA00 seems to be a good hard drive, no known issues of premature breakdowns.
I have used many Apple and Windows notebooks since 1995 and never experienced a drive crashing after less than one year. Now I have repeated drive crashs in the same Apple notebook.
Since the drive model seems to be OK, I really have a suspicion of a hardware bug in the MacBook.

  • IPhoto 11 Migration Issue: Unique Circumstance (Boot Drive Crash)

    Hello good folk,
I have a migration issue with iPhoto 11 due to a boot drive crash.
The issue: I have imported my library database file and all of my 25,000 photos into a clean install of iPhoto 11. All of the events are imported, but all of the photos appear in the very first event. All of the other events are populated with the correct number of photos, but none of the actual photos have been linked.
I know all about holding down option-click and option-command-click to rebuild libraries, directories, etc., as I have read about in multiple posts. But many tries haven't gotten me to success.
Any suggestions? What am I doing wrong?
Here are the specifics of the chain of events, in case it helps [sorry for all the details, but it might help]:
    1. Was running iPhoto 09 in 10.5.8, my boot drive bit the dust.
    2. I was able to save most of my data from the drive. Due to corrupt files, I was forced to back up unconventionally: instead of saving the entire library, which I could not do, I unpacked the iPhoto library and, from the Originals folder, I copied over entire year folders (2002, 2003, etc.) onto a non-boot drive. This worked.
    3. I then installed the new boot HD and installed 10.6.X.
    4. I installed fresh copy of iPhoto 11 and updated the software.
    5. In iPhoto 11, I threw away the database and replaced with the recovered database from the old boot drive.
    6. I copied all of the year photo folders (from the "Originals" folder on the manual backup disk) wholesale into the "Masters" folder of the new iPhoto 11 install.
    7. [I could not use Migration Assistant to do this because Migration Assistant, for some reason, will not migrate from a non-boot drive that's installed internally on my Mac Pro.]
    8. I option-command-clicked open iPhoto and selected:
    -- Repair iPhoto Library Database
    -- Rebuild small thumbnails
    -- Rebuild all thumbnails
    -- Examine/repair permissions.
    9. I did this twice. The first time, the events from the database installed correctly, but the photos did not show up. The second time, after a very long time rebuilding the thumbnails, all 25,000 photos showed up, but in the very first event. All of the other events remain blank.
    10. I then did an option-click, and chose to open the main library. I did that, but nothing changed.
    11. Perhaps interestingly, when I option-click, it says that my manual backup from my internal drive -- where I did my emergency backup -- remains as the "default." The main iPhoto library is not the default.
    12. That's where I am now. I really don't want to have to install manually without the data, when all of the events imported fine, and all of the photos are there, but in the wrong event.
Sorry for the long-windedness. Any suggestions are much appreciated!
    John

I have imported my library database file and all of my 25,000 photos into a clean install of iPhoto 11. All of the events are imported, but all of the photos appear in the very first event. All of the other events are populated with the correct number of photos, but none of the actual photos have been linked.
You can not "Import" an old iPhoto library into another iPhoto library - it is not the way it works - if your old iPhoto library is available you simply place it in the pictures folder and launch iPhoto - no importing involved
you can not piece together an iPhoto library - which is why having a backup up is critical to avoid lost data
If your iPhoto library is not available as a single entity then you will have to start over and create a new library and import the photos into it losing all edits, metadata changes, etc
And if the future remember to always backup soon and often -it is the only way to avoid data loss due to failures - hardware, software and/or human

  • Hard drive crashed, saved programs on external hard drive, reinstalling and having issues getting programs to work. What should I do?

I have a Mac and purchased a student edition of CS6 before you had to subscribe. My hard drive crashed and I was able to reinstall the programs, but there is an error. Does anyone know how to contact support or how to fix the problem?

  • Hard Drive crash and replaced: need to re-install. License issue which we have all information demonstrating it is good. How to allow it???

We need to re-install and no matter how we try the message is buy a new one. We don't need a new one, just need to use our original one.

I think this probably needs a ticket submitted to support unless someone moderates here who can reset your license.  I believe that your product was activated when your drive crashed and you obviously could not deactivate Adobe since the drive died.  I have a similar but worse problem because mine is an upgrade and I do not have the original Adobe X license.  Unless they have a way to take care of that type of situation, I may be out of luck.  I am going to submit a request for help (probably be calling them on Monday to see if I am out of luck or not.
Good luck!  I will be checking back to see if some kind person has a "for sure" solution to both of our woes.

  • MSI R9 280X 3G Gaming artifacts and freezes

I just bought a 2 month old MSI R9 280X 3G Gaming card. After I installed the card my PC didn't POST, so I went into the bios and resetted everything to default. Then again my computer didn't POST. I checked the bios switch on the graphics card, it was set on position 2, I switched it to position 1 and my computer booted into Windows. I installed the catalyst drivers and started to play some games. It went quite bad, I had artifacts, game crashes and overall bad performance.
I read out the bios version on switch position 1 (the one that does work), this is ver. 015.040.000.000.003435. I flashed the bad bios version on switch 2 which was version 015.040.000.003.003435 with 015.040.000.000.003435.
After the flash I was able to boot windows on switch 2. Still I do have performance issues with games, like artifacts and game crashes.
    My S/N is 602-V277-38SB1312093272.
Can you guys help me out with this?
    Thanks in advance!

Alright, I tried to flash my bios to E7681.430 with the USB DOS tool available on this forum. After my computer booted the USB stick, I was prompted to do a memtest. It hanged, so I wasn't be able to memtest before flashing.
I download the last version of memtest86+ 5.01 and tried to memtest test 5 and 7 for 20 loops, it passed with 0 errors, so it seems my system is stable. Then I copied your provided BIOS to my USB stick and tried to flash it with M-flash in my current BIOS. M-flash wasn't able to recognize this file, so I won't be able to flash it.
So with not be able to pass memtest (only my own downloaded memtest86+ v5.01) from the MSI Bios Flash Dos tool and not be able to flash a new bios with M-flash. I'm not sure what to do next, I won't try the Windows flash option, because of this https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=177335.0  topic.
On the other hand I looks like I need to update to version 4.3 for me being able to use the r9 280x card.
Can you give me any advice about what steps to take next? Thanks in advance.

  • H8-1040 Video Driver Crashing, System Restore then no longer boots properly

I previously had some issues with my graphics card driver crashing. After moving, I took the card out and cleaned out all the dust. The issue somehow got worse. (As you would imagine, the issue never presented itself in Safe Mode). Regardless, I decided to do a system restore. After completing the system recovery, the computer never went to the OS setup screen. In fact, it simply shows a blank screen now when it boots. There are no error beeps and the system diagnostic checks out. I'm not entirely sure what to do. I've tried booting in safe mode, but the computer says it can not complete the installation in safe mode.
    So has my card died?
(The issue seems to be similar to what is experienced here: http://forums.evga.com/GTX-550-ti-issue-black-screen-after-loading-windows-m1303862.aspx)
If this card had to be replaced, anyone have any suggestions?

    Hi,
Manufacturers will tweak their cards differently.  This EVGA 660 is rated for a 450 watt power supply.  The 460 watt PSU in your PC has sufficient amperage on the two 12v rails.

  • MSI 660 TI PE Display Driver crashes

    First, here is my system.
i5-2500k Processor (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072) (Processor is overclocked to 4.3ghz, temp on it never goes over 45-50°C though)
MSI Geforce GTX 660TI PE Video card (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127696)
    Asus P8Z68-V Pro\Gen 3 Motherboard (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131790)
Corsair HX series HX650 Power Supply (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139012)
    4x4GB of G.Skill Ram (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231314)
When my old MSI P67A-GD55 Motherboard bricked a month ago, instead of waiting on RMA I went ahead and got the Asus board, at the same time I went ahead and upgraded my old Asus GTX 560TI card to the MSI GTX 660TI card. Since the upgrade, I am constantly getting display driver crashes "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered." when playing games. Guild Wars 2 and Starcraft 2 are the only ones I've had time to try, but both consistently give driver crashes after awhile (sometimes as soon as 15-20 mins, sometimes takes several hours of gameplay).
Here is the list of things I've already tried:
-First, I tried the most recent Nvidia drivers. Still crashes.
-Second, I tried running driver sweeper, removing all old drivers and reinstalling. Still crashes.
-Third, I tried disabling TDR in the Win7 registry. Still crashes.
-Fourth, I really ramped up the auto fan speeds. So far it hasn't crashed while doing this, but I can't do it for too long because the fans get so loud that it annoys me greatly.
-Fifth, I thought it might be an old Motherboard driver conflict of some sort, so I completely formated my OS hard drive and reinstalled Windows 7. Still getting crashes.
-Sixth, I used driver sweeper again and rolled back to the last official MSI drivers (the ones from October). Still getting crashes.
I really don't think the card is overheating. The most recent crash happened tonight after playing Starcraft 2 for about 20 minutes, and the temperature of the card never got over 60°C. That's why even with the extremely ramped up fan speeds I tried, I think if I used them long enough, the driver would still crash.
The power supply is the same as what I used with the 560TI and it didn't have these issues. And from my understanding, the 560TI consumed more power than the 660TI.
At this point, I'm at my wits end. The only thing else I know to try is swapping out the old 560TI in with the new motherboard or waiting for my old motherboard to come back from RMA and trying the 660TI in it. Though that means rebuilding the case, uninstalling the new mobo drivers and installing the old mobo drivers and authenticating Windows. Doing all of that is going to kill most of a day and I really only want to do that if I absolutely have to.
I've had such limited time for troubleshooting the card, that I'm regrettably past the 30day limit on RMA replacements to Newegg. So unfortunately that means I'm looking at an RMA directly to MSI and that takes about a month. Before I do that, does anyone have any advice on something to try that might be the cuplrit or can help determine the culprit? I can't find any details in the Event Viewer as to what caused the driver crash. Just that it has stopped responding and has recovered. I wish it could tell me if there was a loss of power, or anything. Power Management Mode is set to prefer maximum performance btw.
Btw, as a brief description of what happens. The screen goes black, and then comes back and the game is running very slowly. There will also usually be a popup above the taskbar saying that the driver had crashed. I keep the MSI Afterburner info window open in my second monitor and Power usage never goes over 80%, GPU Usage is usually around 95-99%. Core Clock and Memory clock drop to about 324mhz (which is what it idles at) temporarily during the crash. GPU Usage of course dips to very low levels while the driver is crashing, as well.
Oh and in an added twist, I've run Kombuster several times. Burn-in test DirectX 11 1920x1600 8xMSAA as long as five hours, and the display driver has never crashed. I'll probably turn it on, and disable the computer's sleep and display off tonight and let it run for about 8-9 hours and see what happens. That's one thing that throws me off, if it's a hardware defect, wouldn't Kombuster cause it to crash?
edit-Here is a screenshot of the Afterburner monitor during a crash while playing Starcraft 2. The huge dip in the bars that I have the cursor over is when the crash occured.

Well with the Power% limited to 75%, I just had another crash in Starcraft 2. Temp was only at 56°C just before the crash.
Here is a shot of the Afterburner Hardware Monitor when it crashed:
Unfortunately I do not have another PC to test the card in. And I don't know anyone around here with a system that the card could work in.
If I swapped out the 660TI with my old 560TI and I do not get any crashes, wouldn't that indicate it's the 660TI's fault and I'd need to RMA since the 560TI is a more power hungry card?

  • GT70 0nc GTX 670MX Driver Crashes, and BAD performance.

I purchased a gt70 ONC 494US and at first I updated all drivers and software on win 8 x64, I tried running multiple games off of steam and none of them were running smoothly, some of them not at all, (borderlands 2, arma II, fallout 3.....) I installed an SSD and a fresh version of win 7 64 ultimate, used only drivers from MSI, and still had crashes and couldn't even run a benchmark.
The only solution I have found to run a select few games, is by uninstalling ALL nvidia software and drivers, using windows default VGA drivers for the 670mx, however, this only works for a few games, and some others won't start because they don't find a capable GPU.
I have read MANY forums, most of them go through the typical, use the nvidia control panel to change the power settings, global settings, and roll back drivers to the originals. NONE of this made any difference.
I have read that there is a firmware beta ec flash? But, even the tech forum from MSI the link didn't go anywhere. I know this is a common problem, and especially with steam games. Yes, the power light turns orange, and i turn on turbo mode, I also turned on the indicator showing the nvidia gpu is being used, but games will not get past the title screen if they start at all, and the nvidia driver crashes.

For the game settings GeForce Experience provides, I wouldn't say it's an optimized setting but the settings only for your references.
Since the tested game environment and system configurations might be different, I'd go for my own settings in order to find the best gaming experience.
Like BlueAlexFPS said, the GTX670M has similar performance as GTX765M, it would be ridiculous to have the same performance like GTX780M. If what you said is true, then why they are they putting 780M out on the market?
I'd keep the graphics driver from MSI website, since a windows generic driver could gives you only the basic level graphics performance and not to mention without the Optimus, you wouldn't know if which graphics it's running.
*Make sure you're having battery and AC adapter both plugged while running the games.

  • Recovering from an External Hard Drive Crash..

Hello - My internal drive was starting to get full so I consolidated and copied all files to an external drive and began to run iTunes from it. Thankfully, I never deleted the files from the internal drive because the external drive crashed taking with it all the files I had imported since switching to using it. I have a new external drive and when attempting to re-consolidate, I receive the error message "Copying music failed. The required file cannot be found." I had hoped to leave iTunes as is and just re-import all the files that had been lost using the songs listed as missing files as a guide to what I need to do over. I have already changed the location for the iTunes folder to the new external drive and have also been unable to re-import missing files from the original music CD. Received a similar error message: "Error occurred while converting the file "*song name*". The required file cannot be found." I read in one thread how there are third party apps that can pull files back from iPod. I think I have iPod set to automatically update once connected. I'm afraid to connect it as I don't want to lose what's there. Is there a way to change the setting without first connecting iPod? Perhaps then I could aquire one of the third party apps to restore library that way? Any suggestions on how to deal with this would be greatly appreciated.
    Sincerely yours,
    "Upset and Unwell"

The backup only saves files.photos and possibly program settings. You will have to reinstall Gimp and iTunes. If your music, photos are in the folder move them to your Documents folder in the proper folder..ie, My Music, My Pictures.

.dat are the actual working files Palm Desktop is looking for - you can't import them.
Just create a user in Palm Desktop and copy the .dat files (that have more than 1k of data) over the existing address.dat and datebook.dat (or calendar.dat, I forget which existed on your device).

  • IPod hard drive crashing problems

Sorry this is going to be long, as I want to give some background, because I would love to hear opinions about this:
I had a 6th generation 160g iPod for just over 3 years. I was on vacation using it over a long weekend a week ago. I was listening to music and decided I was going to watch a Simpsons episode that I bought from the iTunes store and was in my "tv shows" section of my iPod.
As I went to switch to the episode, the iPod froze black. I had been having issues with it randomly resetting itself or pausing during songs, so I thought it might be on its way out. - Sure enough when I did the reset it never booted back up. I tried several times. So when I got back home 2 days later and plugged it into my computer, I was not surprised that it still would not reboot.
I was bummed. 3 years is not a long time when you spend that much money. I am broke right now and since I am a music fanatic, with a huge music library I was wondering how I was going to carry on. I cannot afford to buy a new iPod.
My dear father came to my rescue and showed up at my house with a brand new 7th generation 160g iPod on Saturday evening, just as a nice jesture. - I let it sync up, went to bed. Sunday afternoon, I was taking my daughter to the park and I brought my iPod into the car. I noticed that much of the artwork was not popping up as I looked through both coverflow and sampled some songs in playlists. And when I went to try a video again... BAM, the iPod locked up and wouldn't reset, just like the old one.
I thought... maybe this is a fluke, but how strange that a brand new iPod would crash again on legally purchased iTunes video. So after trying to get it to reset, I plugged it in and again, it would not reset and my computer would not recognize it. The hard-drive just wouldn't boot up.
Then I thought... even though it wasn't plugged into my computer either time and I had used the old one for a while without syncing, maybe it was something on my computer... so I plugged it into my wife's laptop and it said "found new hardware" and then there was a new message saying something along the lines of "there is a problem with your new hardware and it cannot be installed".
My dad had gotten the 2 year warranty, but since it wasn't even 24 hours, I went to Best Buy and brought them back the iPod. They checked it out and said "wow, it's rare that out of the box it would crash, but it's crashed" and they gave me a new one. - I asked them about the possibility of something corrupting it, but they said it was unlikely and they since it's a hard-drive, hard-drives crash.
So on Sunday evening, I did the same routine, I synced my iPod. This time, I tried a little bit of music and a little bit of video without syncing my library and it worked... Then that night I let the whole thing sync.
This morning (Monday) I took it to work and played some music while I dropped my daughter off, and all of a sudden all the artwork is gone again... I figured I deal with that later, because although it bothered me, at least it was playing song after song with no issue.
I'm at work now and I was letting a playlist play on shuffle. It was working just find and was so happy to have an iPod back.
Then I hit the menu button and it takes me back to "coverflow" (the last place I was browsing) and all of a sudden the sound starts buzzing and the whole thing locks up. It's stuck, so I go to reset it...
And low & behold, it won't reset, like the hard-drive crashed AGAIN. This is the 3rd iPod in a row. I plugged it into my work computer, just to see if it would recognize it. (I downloaded the latest iTunes on there) It won't. Again it just won't reboot.
Now the first one, I was having hard-drive troubles, and hadn't been synced in a while, so unfortunately I think the product just doesn't last very long.
But now with 2 new ones, it's making me think that there could be a problem with something in my computer. But I can't imagine what. Everything is either ripped directly into iTunes from a CD, bought from the iTunes store or were WAV files I put into iTunes and converted to aac files. I am a musicians and don't believe in illegally downloading music and don't use torrents. I can't imagine what could corrupt anything I'm syncing.
I have about 110g of music that I am trying to sync. And then some tv shows, which I don't always sync all of them. Most of them were purchased from iTunes, but I have a few that I took from DVD and converted and put into my iTunes.
I have called the apple help line, but they want me to call them back when I'm at my computer at home and we can trouble shoot, even though I know they won't be able to help me, because my iPod won't be able to be read.
I would love to get some opinions and help.
    Thank you,
    Paul.

Okay, by looking at my previous posting in this forum, it has apparently only been 2 1/2 years since I got my last iPod.

  • Can't download applications (poss due to hard drive space issue)?

    Hi there,
I'm having major hard drive issues with my MacBook Pro OS X 10.4.11 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM laptop.
I use it for video editing and also keep music on it. However for the video editing I use an external hard drive, though I've found some Final Cut Pro files on my internal hard drive before and deleted them whenever I've found them. Sometimes it's an Imovie project, sometimes a straightforward final cut project, sometimes a playout of a final cut project.
My problem is that I now have almost no hard drive space, to the point where I wasn't able to save a Word file last week due to insufficient disk space! I emptied the trash and managed to get it to save in the end.
I immediately went on to the discussions pages and it was suggested to try WhatSize, OmniDiskSweeper and Disk Inventory to identify the files that were taking up all the room. Unfortunately NONE of these applications will download onto my laptop. They're not the only ones, I tried downloading a couple of other applications for music and the like and NOTHING will download!
I went through everything that I felt I knew for certain that I could delete without being detrimental and freed up a small bit of room and tried again but still NOTHING. I then used Onyx on the suggestion of another post and freed up a few gigs (I went from 1.7gb available to 7gb available) and assumed that this would do the trick, however, it hasn't!
What happens when I try to download these (or any) applications is that when i click the "Download Now" area on the webpage it begins to move onto what should be a download progress page or a "download complete" page but instead just spends an eternity "loading", with the little loading wheel on the left of the tab just spinning around and around. I tried leaving it literally all night last night but to no avail, opened it back up again and still the circle was spinning around and around "loading". This has been the case for the several dozen attempts I've made, no matter what the website.
It seems like something of a Catch 22 if the situation is that I can't download these applications that will help me to free up Hard Drive space, because I don't have any Hard Drive space! Though I'd have thought that the 7gb I now have would be ample. Did my laptop turn to self preservation mode perhaps when the hard drive was down to the bare minimum and I wasn't even able to save word documents?
If anybody can help it'd be HUGELY appreciated...
    All the best,
    Rory

If you open a Finder window you can also sort by size by clicking the size column header. In view options you can also set it to calculate all sizes so it will also show folder sizes. Although not as handy as the cataloging applications you can at least start tracking down where the disk space is going. With video you can probably just copy half a dozen files off and immediately free up many GB.
Note that this isn't just a matter of convenience. OSX makes lots of temporary files and is doing it all the time. If it can't find space for those files it can result in a serious drive crash and that could cost you several hundred dollars in recovery expenses. A Sig indicates, you need space just for computer operation. I feel the % recommendation is a bit vague since people use drives ranging from 10 - 1000 GB in size. My computer regularly uses 6GB of hard drive space for temporary files, and I like to leave wriggle room, so I usually leave at least 15-20GB. You can check the temporary file usage by looking at VM in Activity monitor.
As BDaqua observes, having a crowded drive also slows down your computer. If it has to hunt for nooks and crannies in which to place bits and pieces of bigger files that takes time. Normally one does not have to worry so much about fragmentation of files on a Mac, but your scenario of working with large files on a really crowded drive may be defying that generalization.
