Drives just stop with new Xserve raid

I have just set up a new Xserve on 10.4.5 with 2 x 400 gig drives. The raid has been set up by the book twice and the drives were formated aswell, the problem is that after the raid is set up i then test it by copying lots of data to it from various machine across the network and after about 10 gigs of copying the drives just stop, on their own(not in a raid) the drives work fine.
Any suggestions ?
Thanks
Matt

Hello, Diego Arana and welcome to the AppleBoards,
+I don´t know what OS the Xserve RAID has, I just know that it is the first one.+
The Xserve RAID has no operating system on it. It is essentially a very fancy external hard drive that attaches over fibre channel. It does a firmware version that can be updated but that is the closest thing to an OS that it has. (Unless you're adding drives you can probably leave that alone.) The XRAID is controlled over either of the ethernet ports using the RAID Admin program - if you don't have a copy download it from Apple's support site.
+Is it possible to connect a New MacPro (Early 2009) to a Xserve RAID (RAID 720G/4DRIVE/2X2GB FC) via fiber channel?+
Yes, I have done this and it is straightforward. The fibre will negotiate down to 2GB, of course, but it does just work. If you're talking about the Apple shipped fibre card it is (at least in the states) shipped with SFP connectors that match the SFP connectors that are on the Xserve RAID and you just use the copper cabling (not the optical fibre) to connect them unless you are going a very long distance. If you order the card (again in the states) with Xserve the copper cables are included when they ship it.
If you do have optical connections you can buy optical to copper/SFP converters. I have several of these on my fibre switch and they are not more complicated than adding the adaptor and plugging them in - at least on the fibre switch. I have never actually hooked up an XRAID to optical fibre but this is pretty common in XSAN environments with longer "cable" runs.

Printer driver just stopped working. HP Photosmart c410 wifi, connected to Mini OS 10.8 and Airport. Sez "Printer is not connected" but it is. Doesn't work from other Macs on the network either.
It has worked fine up until just now. Tried printer OFF then ON. Tried to re-install driver, but I can't seem to do this. The correct driver cannot be selected.

  • What to do with our Xserve RAID, moving forward - Need Advice.

We have an 3.5 TB Xserve RAID (14 drives - 250 GB each, split into two 7-drive volumes). As many others have, we've moved into more HD and tapeless workflow. The Xserver RAID was purchased really for one HD project with DVCPRO HD back in 2004 and hasn't really been used since except for backup storage.
I'd really like to move us into a SAN system, but am curious about others' perspectives on populating our Xserve RAID with 1 TB or greater drives now or get a different RAID setup. We've moved to Mac Pros, but the Xserve RAID is still dedicated to just one G5. I am doing some reading on setups such as the EVO and CalDigit, but haven't setup a SAN. It's time though.
We have three post machines - two editorial and one sound station. I could really use some insight on how to use our setup in a SAN scenario or what's the cheapest way we can get into a SAN workflow. Granted, drives are cheap these days, but it's so inefficient copying data between two machines to make sure we have a copy of the same media.
    Thanks for any input folks.

I'll start with the fact that 750GB are the absolute max you'll be able to put into the Xserve RAID. Compatible 750 PATAs are really hard to find (and are expensive when you can find them) so that avenue makes little sense. I think you should really be thinking in terms of new hardware at this point. I know several people who run XSAN and are much happier with the Promise RAIDs they have now over the older Xserve RAIDs.
Which hardware and SAN software you should be looking at I'll leave up to someone with more modern experience in the video editing realm- I've been out of it for too many years now.

  • Reformating external hard drive for use with new MacBook Pro

I'm trying to figure out how to use an existing external hard drive (formatted for a Powermac G4) with my new MacBook Pro. I understand that the file formats are different and that I need to erase the hard drive and reformat it with a GUID partition, but how does one do that?
I've already erased the drive with disk utility (using the old Powermac) and connected it to my MacBook with the hope that it would be recognized. No dice, alas. It doesn't mount at all.
Any suggestions on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

My external harddrives all work just fine with the MacBook Pro. You shouldn't have to reformat anything. I think if you did then it would not be backwards compatable with the older systems. Stick it back in your old computer and try to mount it again, repair permissions shutdown your macbook pro and connect the external drive then reboot

  • LOM with new Xserve not working

I've got my first Xserve last night (its one of the new ones). Setup the server via Remote Desktop on my administrator computer and set the user name and password for the LOM during the setup. However LOM status is listed as "Access Denied" under the list of computers. I opened Get Info on the Xserve in ARD and re-entered the LOM user name and password, but that didn't help. Tried deleting the Xserve and re-adding it and that didn't work.
I know the user name and password is valid, because Server Monitor from the administrator computer can access it just fine. Server Monitor can power on/off, etc.
    Any ideas?

Well, new tidbit. Downloaded the server tools (latest) from Apple's website to a different machine. The version of Server Monitor in the download had the same problem with user name and password not being correct. So I installed the server tools from the CD that ships with the Xserve. That version worked.
Sounds like Apple has changed something in the LOM sign in protocol and ARD needs an update (as well as the downloadable server tools).
    Thanks for the help anyway.

  • I have my FireFox browser set to delete the history when I close the window. It was working for a while and has recently just stopped with no changes to the settings.

I have my FireFox browser set to delete all the history when I close the window. It was working for a very long time and has recently stopped with no changes to the settings. This has happened once before and I deleted FireFox and re-downloaded it, that solved the problem for a short period of time but the issue has come up again. How can I fix this?

Can you check your configuration again? Maybe something went pear-shaped somewhere. It's located in Tools | Options | Privacy and then click the Settings button (see screenshot).

  • Use existing external hard-drive music library with new laptop.

I moved my I-tunes library to an external hard-drive on my previous laptop. That worked fine. After a hard disk crash I am now configuring a new laptop (installing I-tunes) and I would like to keep my music on the external hard drive: How do I proceed?

Depends on whether you had your complete library (including the iTunes database) on the external drive, or just your media files and folders.  If the former, you can just hold down shift as you start iTunes, and when you get this is prompt:
click on Choose Library... then navigate to and select the iTunes Library.itl file on the external drive.
In the other case - and assuming that you can't copy or retrieve the database file from your old machine or a backup of it, create a new library in X:\iTunes (where "X" is the drive letter of your external drive, make sure the settings in Edit > Preferences > Advanced are as follows:
and then use File > Add Folder to Library... to add your existing media folders.

  • WD External Hard drive not working with new Macbook Pro

I have recently upgraded to a new Macbook Pro and when connecting a WD 1 TB Passport external hard drive, it doesn't appear on the MBP, but when I connect it to my old Macbook running 10.5.8, it appears normally. Is this a problem with formatting or an issue because it is USB 2.0...
Any help appreciated as I have a lot of data on the hard drive and would like to be able to use it with my new MBP.

I'm on Lion, with similar issues with two WD external HD. But what I found fixed the problem was to:
    1. go to the manufacturer's website (in this case Western Digital),
    2. locate my external HD, download the download.
For instance, I downloaded the WD Drive Utilities for Mac (for My Passport for Mac USB 3.0):
    http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=219&sid=157&lang=en
    Install the downloaded app.
    3. Plug in external (this part, I think is important) directly into your tower or laptop (as opposed to through a USB multi-plug extender). Possibly this is because you access more power?
[I'm trying to remember in which order everything happened. But I think at this point the external hard drive mounted]
    4. Install the software that is found on the external HD (in my case, it was a brand new device, so that had never been installed).
    5. Run "WD Drive Utilities" and run diagnostics.
    6. Test to see if it holds. Unmount the External HD. Unplug. Replug in and see if it mounts.
Note: I have not yet tested to see if plugging in the external somewhere other than directly into the tower also works. But I think the main problem is getting it to mount the first time and installing the software. That's what I think.

  • What external hard drives are compatable with new Ipad 4

What external hardrives are compatable with the new Ipad 4 connector

Not entirely sure what you are asking. According to this review (I haven't got one so I don't know for sure) then the wifi-enabled GoFlex Satellite drives can :
The device can stream basically all content supported by the iPad including videos (H.264 video, MPEG-4, and Motion-JPEG), audio (AAC, MP3, Audible (formats 2, 3, 4), Apple Lossless, A IFF, WAV), documents (Microsoft Office, iWork, Adobe) and photos.
But non-wifi drives, i.e. those that require a cable connection, won't work with the iPad.

  • Drives that work with new DVR

I just signed up for the DVR upgrade. I was looking at the following iomega 2tb esata drive. This should work for expanding the storage right?

I received my new high capacity DVR today.  How can you be sure that the esata drive is enabled? (before i go out and get a drive I'd like to be sure I'm going to be able to use it?)
    Thank you
You need the latest IMG software which is V1.9 (build 10.95) for Motorola boxes (don't know the number if you got a Cisco box).  Go to the menu, settings, and system and the information as to the build will be there.  If you don't have the latest build then you will not be able to use an extrnal drive until the update is pushed to you.  Depending where you live that may have happened or will happen within the next couple of months (there is nothing you can do to speed up the push of the new code).
BTW If you received a 7232 or Cisco then you already have a 500G drive which is 3 times larger than the 7216 or 6416 (160G drives).
It would help if when people registered they at least put their area location in their profile.  It makes some answers a whole lot easier (you'll notice that I have SE PA in mine).

  • Can't use hard drive after replacing with new one

Disk Utility showed failed hard drive so a new Seagate ATA-100 160G was installed. I did the Erase and Journaling of the new HD. I went back to the installer to install OS10.3 and the HD now shows in the window for the destination volume. The problem is it shows an explamation point over the HD icon and if you select it the window says cannot install OSX on this volume. I placed the jumpers on the new HD exactly as the old HD had them.
    What am I doing wrong?

I placed the jumpers on the new HD exactly as the old HD had them.
Jumpers vary by manufacturer and model. If you copied the jumper positions, and not their meanings, it will not work.
You need to place the jumpers to set the drive to Master, but use the diagram on the new drive (not the jumpers on the old drive) as your reference.
I apologize in advance if you have, in fact, copied the sense of the jumpers rather than their positions.

  • Just home with new camera / info please

So excited!  Just opened my brand new 60D Canon!
Is the battery ready to go or do I charge it first?
If I charge it, how long for the first time before use?
    THANKS!

There may be some residual power. Yes do charge it overnight (8hrs).
    What does the manual say?

  • Fans won't stop with new processor

I just had one of my dual processors changed out. I brought it home and turned it on. The fans will not stop running. I called the tech and was told that this is normal for about an hour? That was yesterday and the fans still run. Any ideas?

The techs should have run a thermal recalibration on the fans when they changed the processor. Sounds like they didn't do that. Take it back to them and have them perform that step.
The fans shouldn't run any more after the service than they did before.
