for some reason my brain has never allowed me to understand how to handle an issue with dropbox and (kind as they are) my previous inquiries to the dropbox folks have never cleared this up for me. it /seems/ like it is a practical question with real and serious consequences but i am feeling particularly thick about it and am always stuck like a deer in the headlights when i run into it. anyone able and willing to walk me past this?
here is the scenario:
i have moved data onto dropbox from either my desktop machine or from my laptop machine. it is hours and hours later and i am now on the laptop and i see a red X on the dropbox icon.
can you please explain to me in detail what i need to do at this point? for instance, i don't know whether i moved a large folder with subfolder and files and subfiles and whether this included other un-nested folders or other un-nested files and i am confused as to what the red X means.
i mean, presumably if i buy additional storage all the files will be synced up on dropbox and accessible from my two computers and the data that i MOVED from the computers (and that put me over the limit) will not be on the computer that i MOVED it from?!
what happens if i /don't/ upgrade?
can you please tell me how i handle this assuming i don't pay dropbox to make more space?
i mean - i guess all the data is there but - well but what??

When you move a file to Dropbox you are actually moving it to a folder on your Mac called 'Dropbox'. Dropbox then syncs this folder to the server.
If you put more data in the folder than your limit, Dropbox won't sync it. The files will simply stay there - they aren't in Dropbox, they are on your Mac. If you move the excess files out syncing will start again. So what you propose will work.
In this situation there are some files in your Dropbox folder which are also on the server, and some - those over the limit - which aren't. If you move the latter out of the folder then no change has been made. If you move some of the files which have been synced, those files will be removed from Dropbox and if this brings you under the limit syncing will resume.

Cloud Storage Question - Droid phone switch to iphone

I just switched from a droid phone to an iphone 5s. I have verizon cloud for storage. Do I have to use icloud or can I just stick with verizon cloud?

- Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers
Public DNS — Google Developers

- Try on another computer/network
- Wait if it is an Apple problem

I had broken out of using the default quiz slides and had recreated as my own slides mainly so the user only had to click once and regardless of what was clicked, they received feedback and went on to the next slide.
I'm thinking about rewriting the script to include a few scenario based interactions that should meet the requirement of knowledge checking and, hopefully, not feel like a quiz.

My Macbook all of a sudden can't open Skype, Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Entourage. I have done research and read that it has something to do with malware and viruses. Please help I feel like I have tried everything!

This started a few days ago, when I noticed skype would not open and keeps quitting unexpectingly. Now it's all of my microsoft office programs. I have read horrible things on the internet about creeps building some sort of 'backdoor' through Mircosoft Word and are now able to access my macbook. I want to feel safe again and I want to be able to use skype again. I think I will delete Microsoft office until I find/can afford a better version.
I have tried deleting and re-installing the programs, PRAM-ing my mac, doing the utilities organizing thing, and I downloaded 4 different scanners (Cleanmymac, VirusBarrier Express, Bitdefender Virus Scanner, and ClamXav) to help get rid of this and only one scanner found a small file that was harmful. I need some advice PLEASE!

Sorry I'm just getting to this now, but a lot going on today in this front. There is now a "K" version of Flashback and perhaps more going on.
A couple of considerations you need to be aware of.
It's clear from the results of your testing that the reason you were infected is because your Java is out of date, so it's important that you keep all your software up-to-date going forward.
But even that won't protect you from this new "K" version as Apple has not released the patch to it yet, so I encourage you to disable Java in all your browsers and consider doing so for everything by opening Java Preferences (located in /Applications/Utilities/) and unchecking the box next to "J2SE 6.0" and any other box that might be checked. I suggest you take the following steps immediately:
1. Back up all data to at least two different devices, if you haven't already done so.
2. Boot from your recovery partition (if running Mac OS X 10.7 or later) or your installation disc (if running an earlier version of the Mac OS), launch Disk Utility, and erase the startup drive. This action will destroy all data on the drive, so you must be sure of your backups.
3. Install the Mac OS.
4. Reboot and go through the initial setup process to create an account. Don’t import anything from your backups at this stage.
5. If running Mac OS X 10.6.x or earlier, run Software Update.
6. Restore the contents of all the top-level subfolders of your home folder except “Library” from the most recent backup. You can also restore the files in the Library folder, but don’t restore any of its subfolders; only the files contained in those folders, and only if they’re visible in the Finder. Don’t restore any hidden files or folders, no matter where they are.
7. If you’re running Mac OS X 10.5.x or earlier, disable Java in Safari’s preferences, and leave it disabled until you upgrade to Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later, including all available updates. The Java web plugin is unsafe to use under older versions of the Mac OS. Note: I’m not referring to JavaScript, which is unrelated to Java, despite the similarity in the names.
8. Change every Internet password you have, starting with banking passwords. Check all financial accounts for unauthorized transactions. Take this step only after you’ve secured your system in the preceding steps, not before.
9. Reinstall your third-party software from fresh downloads or original media, not from backups which may be contaminated. If you use any third-party web browsers under Mac OS X 10.5.x or earlier, disable Java in their preferences, as you did with Safari in step 7.
Of course, as of this morning you should follow my instructions for disabling Java and ignore his, at least until Apple gets that Java patch out.
Pay particular attention to Step 8 no matter what you decide to do.

Creative Cloud Storage Question

My folder is saying that it has reached its storage limit of 20gb but I only have 1gb in there. What am I doing wrong? Please help!

You can use the Select All check box at the top to select everything in the Archive for Permanent Deletion.
If it takes a while just go ahead an open a new browser/window tab and continue other work such as adding new files, creating folders, etc.

Macbook Pro and iCloud storage questions/help

Hi all, Im needing help here as my Macbook Pro has become extremely slow and sluggish, is this because there is too much stored on it? Having iCloud should help take extra room up on the Macbook should it not?
Just general help and advice regarding these matters would be appreciated.

iCloud is a syncing facility, not a separate storage one, and any data on iCloud is duplicated on your Mac. You would do better to buy an external hard disk and use it to store bulky data such as media files.

HELP: I feel like I have tried everything!!! iTunes will not open

Generate the error message again. While the error message box is open, hold down the Alt key and hit the PrtSc key. Paste the screenshot into an image file (using a program like Paint), and save the file.
Start a reply here and click the wee camera icon at the top of the reply window. Click "Choose file", browse to the image file, select the file and click "Open". Now click "Insert file" to insert the screenshot into the reply.

Help, it feels like my 2008 MacBook is giving up.

I have had this MacBook for more than four years. Last year it went from working fine to not being able to turn on at all. I managed to get to Disk Utility and do a Repair Disk. It worked again after that but was slower. Now, a year after, it is beginning to be really slow to the point where I can't have more that two applications open at a time and if I use tabs in Safari, it takes ages to go from one to the other and it's all accompanied by the little spinning rainbow wheel. Frustrating.
Other than that, the fan is running a lot more than normally and the left side of the MacBook gets so hot that I can't have it on my lap.
A Repair Disk doesn't do anything anymore and whenever I try it, it's over in seconds and it says that everything is working fine.
Does anybody have experience with similar problems and does anyone know what I could or should do?
Everything is backed up just in case.

Depends on how you want to use it. Flash storage on the newer macbook and macbook air are built in. A macbook air is the most light weight and a very good machine. It will do all you want it to do unless you are running some very intensive programs. If you go to the apple store on line you can compare the different macbook pro" and macbook Air's.

How to add 'Other' cloud storage accounts - alongside Dropbox, Evernote etc in AiO Remote

I wonder if anybody knows what types of 'Other' accounts can be added in the Cloud Storage settings in HP All In One Printer Remote mobile apps. The usual options for Box, Dropbox, Evernote, Google Drive etc are there but there is also an option of 'Other' under the 'Add Account' section.
In 'Other' you are asked for the following details:
Name (An identification name)
User Name
Password
Server URL
I'm wondering whether this is for FTP or WebDAV or HTTP Post etc? I'm hoping the answer is WebDAV. The issue here is that I would rather use a service I host myself than a Public Cloud Service.
Any ideas or assistance gratefully received.

Thank you for your inquiry regarding the HP All In One Printer Remote mobile app. After explore the app, on both Android and iOS, here is what I found.
The option that you describe is only found in the iOS app. I found the "other" that you spoke about in the settings menu. My understanding of this is that you can connect to a server, etc. Here is what it says in my settings:
Name (My server)
User Name ([email protected])
Password
Server URL (http://host.com)
Please understand that the above example is from an iPad Air running iOS 7.

Cloud storage - how can I use my .png file shared in "public mode" like a hosted file ?

I am french and new on the forum so please be indulgent ! (for my english and my questions).
I am working on HTML signature for my company and I have a little problem.
to be viewed, my .png files needs to be on a server. So I remember that adobe gave me a 100giga storage for me to use.
Cool !
But the problem is that the link only send me to a special view of my file... a jpeg one. So when I try to copy the url I can only use the .jpg
I want my file !
So my question is : is it possible that the cloud storage isn't supposed to share any thing else than a miniature of my file and a download button ?
How can I use it for my signature if I can't acess it but only download it?

You are correct. Public link sharing works as follows:
- you can share a public URL to your PNG file on Creative Cloud. The recipient of the URL can view a preview of the file and download the file in the original PNG format or JPG format.
- it is not possible to give other users direct access to the original file in Creative Cloud.

Do you feel like helping those who don't help anyone?

I have a confession to make: sometimes if the person asking a question has been on SDN for years, has hundreds of posts but 0 points, I just don't feel like replying. It could be that this person actually helped a lot of other SDNers, but they were ungrateful and didn't assign any points, but I think that most likely this person only goes to SDN to ask his/her question and hasn't bothered at all to help others. So why spend any time helping this SDN "vampire"?
Am I the only one thinking like that? Is it wrong?

Yes, I normally do a bit of a background check on folks before I answer.
You don't need moderator access to do this; only to reject the post if they have still not learnt to use the search or expect others to do their work for them...
That is why Abuse Reports are great as well, and you are one of my favourite SDN'ers who's reports can always be relied upon.
In special cases we investigate further when folks are using one account to ask questions and another to answer. This is not only limited to both being within the same thread which is the obvious (and very stupid) option...
9 times out of 10 they loose everything for sufficient reasons.
