Dropouts and slowed to a crawl after 6.0.6 update
The basic operation has become so slow that I can no longer work on even the smallest project. I just completed a project involving roughly 25 hours of raw DV on an external drive and had no problems. I updated to 6.0.6 and did a security update from mac at the same time and now FCP functions as though my operating system drive is full (not the case) or my computer is just not fast enough.
I am at a stand still. Any help would be greatly appriciated.
Michael is soooo right.
And a special note on the repairing permissions
1) whenever you add software always repair permissions and then re-start your computer
2) whenever you update software always repair permissions and then re-start your computer
3) before you post a potentially embarrassing message on the FCP Forum repair permissions and then re-start your computer
Okay forget #3 since my posts are generally potentially embarrassing. In fact, it's just embarrassing having to mention that at all.

My Ipad has a black background now and everything is color faded after the latest software update? I restored and reset the Ipad. How can this be fixed?
How much data is being backed-up from each Mac? (see what's shown for Estimated size of full backup under the exclusions box in Time Machine Prefs > Options).
Is there any other data on your Time Capsule, besides the backups?
Most likely, there just isn't room. Time Machine may be trying to do a very large (or full) backup of one or both Macs, and can't. Since it won't ever delete the most recent backup, there has to be enough room for one full backup plus whatever it's trying to back up now, plus 20% (for workspace).

MacBook Pro Slowed to a CRAWL after less then a week....
Hello All,
I'm new to Mac. I just got a MacBook Pro last week.
Well, for some reason it has slowed to a crawl....
The dock show/hide and magnify isn't working either. Neither is the "active screen corners" feature on the dashboard. In addition to that, the system does not highlight menu items and show the submenus.
Also when starting applications they take forever to load.
It's acting like it has no ram even though it has 2 gigs and a 2.16 processor. The ram is showing up in the "About this MAC" screen though.
I've tried turning off all startup login items. Nothing is being loaded into memory. I've also tried running the disk utility.... still having the same problems.
I'm new to Mac so perhaps I'm missing something completely obvious.
What would you all suggest is going on, and what do I need to do to fix it?
Thank you
MacBook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.6)James:
I suspect Wizard's problems resulted from too many widgets and possibly some not quite compatible software. Slowdown can result from lack of free physical RAM, so that Virtual Memory swap files on disk have to be frequently accessed. I don't think he mentioned how much RAM is installed. His symptoms go beyond mere slowdown, however, so I would suspect other software problems as well.
Cutting way back on widgets together with restarting can work wonders sometimes.
OS X handles file fragmentation pretty well, for file sizes up to about 20 MB. It's probably not necessary to run defrag on a Mac unless one wants to clean up a large space for video work. I don't have defrag software. I'd rather wipe the drive (maybe once a year) and reload from a backup drive. I do swear by DiskWarrior, however, and hope they release an Intel version soon. DW does a great job of correcting disk and file errors and optimizes the directory.
Apple has been packing a lot of changes into OS incremental upgrades. To interpret that as comparable to Windows Service Packs probably isn't very accurate. Yes, some bugs are fixed but there have been steady upgrades of core features. Security fixes are often included as well. But I've experienced no stability problems whatever.
Some users recommend using Combo updates instead of using Software Update. I've always used Software Update and have never had a problem. The important thing, either way, is to make certain the operating system and disk directory are 'clean' and trouble-free before and after the update.
I've never had to do an OS reinstall except once, when I was tinkering with System files and slipped up. Routine preventive maintenance works. -
Macbook Pro running slow/(crawling) after 10.9.4 update
I paste in information on the system from EtreCheck below.
The Macbook is really crawling very slowly.
It may be a coincidence, but happened when I restarted after the latest software update 1st july from OSX 10.9.3 to OSX 10.9.4
Regarding How does it behave/How slow:?
Now, every task that may require the use of resources not recently used (menus, lists etc.) will take exceedingly long time. For example after the desktop appears with the top menu, it will take 3-4 min before any menus can be pulled down, same with dock, 3-4 min to show up. Clicking an app, 3-4 min before launches. Then after launched, some apps may run OK, for example Logic Pro.
When working in the Finder. Opening a folder may take 3-4 min, before the the file list shows. Then selecting a file - takes a minute before it gets hi-lighted. But is then fast to drag to an open folder on the backup drive. Copying a folder to a backup drive, is also fast.
Another example: It took two hours from logging in at this Forum, until getting here to post.!! (I'll read answers from another machine)
What I have done:
I have backed up with Time Machine,, in addition to manually backing up files.
I have ran Disk Utility and it reports the hard disk is OK. I have ran fix permission, only two were fixed. No difference.
I have reset the System Management Controller (SMC). No difference.
It is not a network problem, My network is fast and smooth with other devices,
I don't want to change hard drive 'just in case'. It fast to restore files from the backup. However
I have many licences apps and contents which will take several weeks to restore. I've done that before.
Is it likely that it is the hard disk that is failing without disk utility having a clue?

You ask some (5) questions regarding the output of Etrecheck
Re #4 :"Have you tried uninstalling the fastestyoutubedownloader.com user launch agent, in case that’s causing a problem?"
Yes, now I have. Now it takes 40 min. from powerup to the login screen.!
My system report showed as I posted, before the removal:
"User Launch Agents:
[failed] com.fastestyoutubedownloader.TrialExpired.GoldFreeFirstWeek.plist"
I am ignorant about the matter. I too was surprised to find that item and the conspiracy deamon on my left shoulder had wild thoughts.
The app that generated the Launch Agent must have been FastestYouTubeDownloader.app,
It was downloaded as an app and no uninstaller. I think it was supposed to run fast the first week, and if you paid for it(upgrade license), it would remain fast or else work slowly. I tried it on one file and then threw it in the trash, as I would have no more use for it. But a nagging/promo dialog telling me the trial period was over came up 1st july, while the nagging came up I was notified (by appstore) that a new update of my system required a restart. I pressed that, my system was updated to 10.9.4 and after the update everything was slow. So the conspiracy deamon was whispering that maybe the app had made everything slow, by mistake, and not just the FastestYouTubeDownloader.
I really don't think so.
But I think the developers have to leave a mark somewhere to tell them that I have tried the software and maybe they have chosen the User Launch Agent for this? Then trying to remove it may just cause more problems, since it is not anything I should be able to do for obvious reasons.
I couldnt see what it was really doing from its content, it seems to me it should do nothing if the application was not found.
Re # 1 and #2
I have had these drivers all the time and not experienced problems with earlier versions of Mavericks.
Also, the ZOOM and the GR-55 is not connected.
Both had at least their own kernel-extension, a launch agent and a preference panel, but possibly more.
But I have now tried the Uninstaller that accompanies the GR-55 driver to remove it. It gave no improvements.
Re # 5
I have apperently two Flash Players, both have the same version number, one is outdated.?
Probably not good, but probably not my main problem(s).? I'm not using Flash often.
Re # 3
I have no idea, what the following listing
Launch Agents:
[invalid] entries
may refer to. In my HD/Library/LaunchAgents folder I only have
"com.zoom.R16DeviceManager.plist" the other entry in the report with same file name with added extension ".svn-base" I have no idea where is coming from.
I think this is not my primary problem though? even if I am curious where it comes from.
My Conclusions
Obviously with a boot time of more than 45 min doing diagosics and tests takes long time.
The Disk Utility verifies the disk as OK. Onyx verifies the disk as OK (mabe the same test?).
I think my maachine is just getting worse. There must be a serious problem, not just a fine tuning issue.
The conspiracy deamon on my other sholder tells me that Apple have decided its time for me to buy a new computer again :-) ,It would have been a good idea if not for the pain of reinstalling licensed software which will require a 2 week vacaition doing nothing but restoring, Possibly having to purchase new licences costing more than the computer. -
I have a mini mac with 8GB ram and running yosemite OS. I recently installed security update 2015-003 and now my internet connectivity have slowed to a crawl. sometimes if I turn wi-fi off and then back on the speed returns to normal but sometimes it does not. Any ideas what may be causing the slow internet speed?
Please check the speed of your connection on this site.
Then start up in Recovery mode. In the OS X Utilities screen, select Get Help Online. A clean copy of Safari will launch. No plugins, such as Flash, will be available. Check again. Then restart as usual and post the results. -
Network traffic slowed to a crawl after installing RV325
I hoping someone can help me. Yesterday I installed an RV 325 on an existing network to replace a netgear router. Now traffic has slowed to a crawl.
Initially I had both the Domain Controller and the switch that all the PCs are connected to both connected to the router. I could not transfer even the smallest file from the server to a PC without it timing out. I solved this by moving the domain controller to the switch so that the router is out of the loop. Now local traffic is back to full speed but internet traffic is still extremely slow.
Email, downloads of files and general browsing are all extremely slow. A speed test shows a ping of 8ms, download 0.57ms and upload of 3.18ms. The ping and upload are normal, the download is not. I've tried rebooting the router but that seems to make no difference. I'm on firmware version v1.1.1.06.
HELP!I have an internet connection that does 200mbps. My ISP has an internal speedtest (to guarantee that "nothing internet" comes in between and you are testing the "LAN" connection). With my laptop connected directly to the modem I get 185mbps. With my old router (100mbps port) I get 80mbps.
Hoping for awesome results - since I specifically bought it for its gigabit wan ports - I ran the test again with the RV325 in between. The download speed stalled at 25mbps! (So for clarity: 1/8th of the max speed and 3 times slower than my previous router).
In bandwidth management I've changed both up and downstream numbers to 1.000.000 (it won't go higher) and I do not have any rules. This does not help a bit.
The port is connected @ 1gbps to my modem, my laptop is connected @ 1gbps to the router and I'm running firmware 1.1.1.06
I really hope there is something I missed here, because I'm greatly disappointed so far. -
Source and Program Monitor not working after October CC 2014 Update
I updated to the October 2014 Replace of Premiere Pro and since then I have had major issues with the Source and Program monitors.
I can select a clip from the media browser and have it appear in the source monitor - click play. The clip will play for a bit and the picture will stop, but the audio will keep going. After a few seconds the source monitor will just display a red screen and the audio will keep going. The same things happens in the program monitor (different clips that worked before the October 2014 update) will start displaying the yellow media pending screen - and then go to red after a few seconds. Again - this is a mutli-camera sequence that worked before the October 2014 update.
I am pretty much dead in the water at this point. And yes, I have rebooted, changed the Mercury play back engine from hardware to software. Nothing seems to correct the issue.I have had similar problems. In fact playback is so sluggish it is unworkable.
In addition Audio in nested sequences doesn't play back, and when it does it is intermittent. Totally unworkable! -
Printer not printing in black at all, poor color print since 7/22/15. I have downloaded drivers and software, hard reset the printer (power cord out and unplugged then plugged all back in), read all the forums, watched youtube videos, called friends, googled answers, bought new ink (waste of money), cleaned print head multiple times, did every step on every forum post to no avail... Bought a new printer but really would rather return it and get my money back after getting this printer up and running again- why because I think the problem is due to HP and the new update released 7/22/15! I'm very upset, I have spent countless hours attempting to fix this printer (which I really do love up until now). I have lost credit on school assignments due to printing issues, wasted money on ink (that is really expensive) and wasted the ink trying to fix it running test page after test page. I feel like this is not fair to the consumer and I am very upset. I am ready to throw this thing in the street and smash it to pieces with a baseball bat at this point. I really would rather fix it but apparently this is the only way to contact someone. I have had this printer for 3 years and do not think I need to replace it or spend money to call someone from HP to fix it nor do I feel like I need to have it "serviced", nor do I wish to waste any futher time or money on the expensive ink this printer requires.
Hi there ,
I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP. They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number. Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact.
Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post serial numbers and case details.

Safari has slowed to a crawl after upgrading to 4GB memory and installing Mavericks
Before I upgraded my MacBook I used Snow Leopard. Despite my slow broadband with Safari I could get a list of possible answers in a couple of seconds. Now with Mavericks it can take 4-5minutes for a page to load then another 4-5 minutes to read the page. Can anyone help?

IPhoto hangs on opening preferences, slows to a crawl after multiple edits
while i reallly like most of the new features and clean ups for iPhoto, i keep running into spinning beach balls - usually for 5 minutes or more at a time. it's not just iPhoto, but other parts of iLife as well, but iPhoto is where it hits me hardest. and it seems to be iTunes related. Yes, i have a large library, but WHY does it take iPhoto so long to read the same library file the iTunes does in a few seconds? And WHY does it happen every time i open preferences after logging in? 5 minutes is way too long to wait to use a program i routinely use each day.
also, after making a number of edits on a number of pictures, iPhoto slows down to a crawl. it beach balls between images for minutes, then at last never comes back. i have to do a force quit.
what's up with this strange behavior? is it going to be fixed REAL SOON? and it sounds like i can't even go back to 06 since the libraries have changed. Any advice?
dDale:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I believe TD's suggestion was directed primarily towards the editing issue. The preferences and accessing iTunes from iPhoto issues we'll have to live with until iPhoto issues a fix via an update.
Boot into Safe Mode and try the editing again. If the problem goes away there there's an issue with your account. If it persists then it's either the library or the application.
If the edits work OK in the Safe Mode then create a test library, import a couple of photos and see if the editing issue continues. If not, import some more and try again. You can use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager to copy events from the problem library to the new one and keep your keywords, comments and titles intact. If the new library continues to be able to edit OK as you continue importing via iPLM then you may want to continue until the new library is complete and trash the old one.
If the editing problem continues in the test library then a reinstall of iPhoto might be warranted. To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name that reside in the HD/Library/Receipts folder. Then reinstall from the disks that iPhoto came on.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file. -
Stamping slowed to a crawl after 10.5.7 upgrade
not sure if this is the only problem, i am still waiting on the bar to progress.....
we really need an upgrade to aperture, this is getting ridiculous...
also: my 5DII files were supported in 10.5.6, so what changed with 10.5.7? the 5DII is listed as now supported? i was hoping for tether support, but no, of course not.....
about the title of this topic.....a stamp that used to take about 10 sec now takes 10 minutes.....first i thought it was writing the previews at the same time and that was the reason for the slowdown, but it isn't...it is just beyond slow....
please someone tell me that an upgrade is in the works otherwise i will have to start using LR again and leave this mess for good....Hi,

Dropouts and slow Airport Express
I have two Airport Express which create a WDS network. One AE in my house is "upstairs" and connected to my cable modem by ethernet. The other is "downstairs" and extends my network. The network is WPA protected.
Over the last few weeks I'll irregularily lose the internet connection downstairs when accessing it with my powerbook (AE 54 MB card). When it is running, the speed is about half the speed I get when connecting wirelessly to my upstairs AE ( I get one bar less than upstairs), even if I'm quite near to the "downstairs" unit.
Since "upstairs" wireless connection speed is fine (I get 10MB download and 1MB upload), the problem either relates to my "downstairs " AE unit or the network (I set it up to automatically chose the best channel).
My wife uses the internet with her PC notebook (only a 11Mb wifi card) from time to time. She also has the issue of dropout with the "downstairs" AE, whereas the "upstairs" AE works fine for her.
Unplugging the AE "downstairs" and plugging it back into the electrical outlet often resolves the missing internet access (green light is always on) but only temporarily. I've also reset the AE downstairs once, but this has not solved the issue.
Any ideas as to what I can do to solve this?I also noticed that sometines a restart of my Powerbook would help me connect (however only for a small period of time before disconnecting me suddenly).
I've now turned on "use interference robustness". This seems to help. So far I've not had any dropouts. I'll keep you posted if this is a permanent solution for me. -
Frame rate slows to a crawl after continued use in Authoring
Hello, I have quite a large game that I've developed. It uses
a lot of sound, moving sprites and 3D.
If I reboot my machine, then open Director MX 2004 and run
the game, it will run (in authoring) at about 20fps. After a few
times of stopping, rewinding to the beginning and playing again,
the fps will eventually drop to about 6-8fps. This will take about
7 or 8 starts/stops.
I suspect a memory leak, but do not see anything odd using
the memory inspector.
Anyone else have this problem and found a solution?quote:

ICloud's "Back to My Mac" Crawls after 10.7.3 update
Before I upgraded all of my systems (MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac Pro) to 10.7.3 I was able to have very fast mouse responsiveness and graphics updates using vnc:// and iCloud's "Back to My Mac" when connecting to any of my Macs in various offices. Over Cable/DSL links and on fast campus networks, I never had problems before with using iCloud's "Back to My Mac". However, since the latest 10.7.3 update, all of my vnc:// and "Back to My Mac" sessions have slowed down to a crawl, literally. Mouse clicks are unresponsive. Screen updates are delayed and infrequent. I've tried both Adaptive Quality and Full Quality, both are equally terrible. Please help fix this once monumentally useful tool from the iCloud suite so that I can continue working remotely from home. Thanks.
ps, It was recommended on "Mac OS Ken's" podcast to download and install the 10.7.3 update using the 10.7.3 (client combo), available via download from http://support.apple.com/downloads. Updating using this method did not fix my problems. Please advise.Launch the Console application by entering the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search, and select "system.log" from the file list. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the times of the log messages referring to boot times. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the time of the most recent boot when you had the problem. Look for error messages in the minutes before that time, and post them here -- the text, please, not a screenshot. Edit out excessive repeats, if any. Do the same with kernel.log.
If the logs don't go back far enough in time, scroll down in the Console file list to /private/var/log/system.log.0.bz2 and /private/var/log/kernel.log.0.bz2. Search those archived logs, and if necessary the older ones below them, for the same information.
Also in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. For privacy’s sake, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please do not post shutdownStall or hang logs -- they're very long and not helpful. -
Mail and Safari will not open after 10.4.6 update(s)
Client's Ibook was running Jaguar 10.2.8, and Mail was locking up as it was overstuffed. Upgraded to 10.4.3 to fix the problem, and it did, in fact, fix it.
Was then prompted to install all available updates, which I thought I would do as a courtesy before returning the system to the client.
Now, after the updates, neither Mail nor Safari opens. I get no spinning beach ball...just no response. Other programs, including IE, MS Office programs, and System Preferences are working fine. Starting in Safe Boot makes no difference.
Kind of at a loss and all help is appreciated...thanks in advance!OK. Do this:
1. Open /Applications/Utilities/Console.
2. In the File menu, choose either Open Console Log, or Open System Log, or both, so that the Console application displays the contents of both system.log and console.log.
3. In the Finder, go to the /Applications folder, and try to open Mail and/or Safari by double-clicking on them.
4. Look at the bottom of the Console windows for messages that could have been written there as a result of the failed launch. These may provide useful information to properly identify the problem.
