Dual CPU's! Dual CPU's??

Lo all,
I have dual CPU system, 2x Intel Pentium III, 866 Mhz.
How do I know Arch uses both CPU's, and does the stock kernel support SMP?

Yes, the default kernel supports SMP.
You can verify that it's using both processors by,
cat /proc/cpuinfo

  • Installed flash disk does not boot (Solaris 10 on Fore CPU-50 VME cpu-card)

    Greetings,
After installation of Solaris on a system with a flask disk as system disk, the disk is not bootable.
    Configuration:
    System: Fore CPU-50 VME cpu-card (sparc50)
OS: Solaris 10 (Sparc version, CD-media)
System-disk: ADTRON S35FA-8GC20N Smart Storage 3.5” SCSI Flash pack.
              (configured as c0t1d0)
    Error message at boot:
    Can’t read disk label
    Can’t open disk label package
When I mount the installed disk on another system I can read and inspect the flash disk.
The logging files begin.log, finish.log and install_log in the /var/sadm/system/logs/ directory don’t mention any errors during installation phase.
The logging file /var/sadm/system/logs/install_log begins with:
    Configuring disk
    -     Creating Solaris disk label (VTOC)
    Creating and checking UFS filesystems
    -     Creating / (c0t1d0s0)
    -     etc.
    This install_log file ends with:
    Installing boot information
    -     Installing boot blocks (c0t1d0s0)
    -     Updating system firmware for automatic rebooting
How can I make this flash disk bootable?
    Thanks,

  • High "CPU + Wait for CPU" event on pl/sql execute operation

    I am executing a pl/sql in 256 parallel sessions, on 11G r2 DB (RAC 2 nodes), on a 42core IBM P7 Machine.
PL/sql function opens a cursor on a huge table with around 20M rows and does further processing.
Work-load is equally divided into 256 parallel sessions. 256 parallel sessions are opened by a middle-ware application and each session processes data based on an identifier (there are 256 distinct identifier values).
PL/sql function is comprised of some SQL operations, on which i am experiencing some cluster waits. But CPU + wait for CPU event on pl/sql execute operation is close to 80% of the total execution time.
    Top user events:

    UPDATE 9 6.00 7.28
DELETE 2 1.33 1.61Rest of the SQL queries seem to be very optimum, but waits on pl/sql execute operation are causing very low tps.
Can anybody give me some heads-up about where to and what to look for to resolve?
Please let me know if any extra information is required.

  • Dual-layer 1,67 CPU scaling working? Technical experts welcome.

    Hi,
I have done a pretty simple test using an application called "Reaktor". This is a music application which uses quite a lot of CPU.
On my new Alubook Dual Layer 1.67 GHz one of the instruments doesn't even play. The application CPU meter shows "over" , indicating a CPU overload.
On the previous generation 1.67 (non-DL) this instrument registers 70% CPU use. With the energy saver processor settings on "automatic" or "highest", the instrument still plays.
The only reason I can think of for this is the change from user managable processor settings (energy saver) to dynamic processor frequency scaling.
    My question is this:
Is it possible that the new powerbook can make a mistake in recognizing when to scale the CPU to 1,67 GHz? If so, would this be an issue with the application (programming) not supporting this new technology or more a Powerbook architecture issue? Has anybody else run similar benchmarks?
I found this in another post:
The DL Powerbooks support both divide-by-two mode, AND, for the first time, divide-by-four mode. That is, the processor will set itself to 1.67GHz, 833MHz and 417MHz as needed for the particular task at hand. There is no user control over this switching; it is automated. Previous Powerbooks with 7447 processors have simply supported divide-by-two, e.g. 1.5GHz or 750MHz, with the user having the option to choose 'highest', 'automatic', or 'reduced'. The source for this information is the developer notes on the Apple Developer Connection website.
Having read this, I would assume that in the divide-by-four mode, the CPU is being run at 1.25 Mhz, but should be run at 1.67.
Any other observations / explanations would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dan

  • Upgrading from single CPU to dual ?

    Hey,
With the multi-threaded OpenGL enabled by leopard on powerPC macs i was thinking of replacing the single 1.25 GHz CPU with a stock dual 1.25 GHz to improve performance in World of Warcraft. Any idea what if any i would gain in performance ?
Getting a mac pro is around 2 years off for me and i could pick up a dual CPU for a relatively cheap price.
    Thanks

OK, I did a quick check of a technical manual.
You need to check the fabrication number on the logic board.
It's right next to the SLOT 5 PCI slot, the one farthest from the RAM slots.
It'll be of the format APPLE COMPUTER INC. 820-1308-A or similar number.
If it's 820-1308, 820-1440, or 820-1445, you can't just replace the CPU, there's a compatability issue between those logic boards and replacement CPU's (unless the CPU comes from a logic board with one of those fabrication levels. Apple recommends ordering a replacement logic board, CPU (part number 661-3654).
Otherwise you should be fine, although I'm concerned about taking a dual CPU from an MDD that pre-dates your single 1.25GHz G4 by a whole year.
When you get to dual CPU there may be some updates that need to be applied, I'm remembering a fix that disables one CPU on shutdown since having two active caused clock issues. Could have been part of a general OSX fix though.

  • Installing CCM on DL 380 G3/G2 with dual PIII or Dual Xeon

    Hi NetPros,
I am planning to buy and install CCM 4.X or higher version on HP/Compaq DL 380 or DL 320. when i looked at the Cisco Approved Hardware requirements sheet i found the model that i am planning to buy... with dual PIII or dual Xeon on DL 380 G3. The Cisco document says
"DL380-G2 is a robust server solution designed for Cisco Unified Communications software
applications. Up to 7500 IP phones can be supported on a single server running Cisco
CallManager 3.3 or later. The required processors are dual Intel Pentium III 1.4-GHz processors. No specific memory configuration is required as long as 2 GB of memory is achieved".
Just wanted to make sure with NetPro's before buying the server that i am able to install and practice myself on CCM 4.X or higher versions.
Also, wondering.. Is DL 360 is also on the approved list ??? and is it possible to install CCM on it
    Thanks in advance....

  • CPU Proximity Temperature & CPU Die Digital Temperature

    Hello,
Can anybody explain for me the why the CPU Die Digital temperature of MacBook Pro Retina Display Early 2013 is showing a value between 80 and 90 deg Celsius. What's the difference between it and the CPU proximity ?
I'm using iStat Menus 5.03 and I'm seeing that the Digital value is always higher than the proximity with 10 to 15 deg. What's the maximum temp that my macbook can handle ? the below is a list of sensors for normal use:
    My Specs are: Core i5
    I appreciate your help.

The i5 processor has a TCase value of 72.6°Celsius; anything from the Tcase and below will be the expected temperature of the processor in normal use, anything that doesn't stress out the processor like watching movies, burning CDs, browsing the internet, creating documents, etc.
When the processor is stressed out and it is being use at 100%,  the temperature will go beyond the Tcase. It can perfectly reach 80 to 90°Celsius and the processor will still be OK. The cooling fan is in charge to keep that temperature there.
If the temperature reaches 100 °Celsius or more, that is consider overheating.
I assume CPU proximity is the CPU heatsink. CPU Die is the same, CPU Die.

  • CPU usage vs CPU Target (RESOURCE GOVERNOR)

Usage is averaging 11%, target usage is averaging 50%. The box is very quiet (nothing else running) only one query is running and it is in the default group, why is the default group not reaching its target %? (there are no other groups on this server, other
    than internal)
    here are the settings:

    Hello ,
Have you seen the query execution plan ? I think answer is there .
    Description
    CPU usage %
The CPU bandwidth usage by all requests in all workload groups belonging to this pool. This is measured relative to the computer and normalized to all CPUs on the system. This value will change as the amount of CPU available to the SQL Server process
changes. It is not normalized to what the SQL Server process receives.
    CPU usage target %
The target value of CPU usage % for the resource pool based on the resource pool configuration settings and system load.

    what
should be the physical cpu to virtual cpu ratio for LYNC 2013 FE and Edge server, it is same like exchange 1:1 ?

    Putting this here as well:
I don't believe this is documented anywhere.   I typically see 6 cores, but I've run with 4 or 8 but in the end it's all about watching performance.
System Center Advisory for Lync can complain if it's not at least 8.

  • POwerMac G5 Dual Core vs Dual Processor

Am thinking about upgrading my G4 computers and going to the G5 Powermac. More than likely a dual processor or dual core. What is the difference between the dual processor and dual core? Is there any difference between these re: efficiency and how they work overall?

A "dual processor" refers to two physically distinct and separate chips. A "dual-core" refers to 2 processors on a single chip, often sharing certain resources (eg cache, memory, etc).
As far as I know, the only dual processor G5 Apple currently offers, is the Quad, or 2 dual-cores. The 2 GHz & 2.3 GHz machines, have only a single chip with dual-cores (2 processors on each chip), to the best of my knowledge.
To the best of my knowledge, having separate chips is better whenever possible, than multiple-cores (processors) on a single chip, because multiple cores have to share resources.
However, if you can only have a single chip, multiple-cores (2 processors) are advantages. It won't double your productivity, but should give it least a 40-60% boost. This assumes that the specific software you are running, takes advantage of multiple cores. A lot of software does not take advantage of multiple cores, and having a multiple-core machine is a waste.

  • FYI--Compressing times of a dual 450 vs dual 1.25 vs Quad

Just got my quad and after some hoops to jump thru I have fcp 4.5/compressor 1.2 running fine now.....
Now these times are not 100% accurate....off by a few minutes here and there but this is what i've got from going from two g4's dual 450 and dual 1.25 to a G5 Quad.....
This project is 1 hour and 40 minutes with a fair bit of colour correction, a third of it time remapped, and a third of it with a widescreen matte...
dual 450 - just the video compress --approx. 15 hours
dual 1.25 - just video --approx. 10 hours
Quad - just video compress---under 1 hour and 30 minutes....
All I have to say is holy crap batman!!
For me getting the quad now certainly makes a lot of financial sense as I will be able to finish projects a lot faster. I have a back log of about a dozen projects. Can now ship off my slowest mac to a friend who can work for me as well.....:)
The Upgrade is coming in the next week or two and I should see a bit of a difference there as well.....

  • Dual G5 with 1 CPU failure

hi, has anyone had this happen to them? I've got a Dual G5 2.5GHz machine which now appears to only have 1 CPU. confirmed this in System Profiler, but for the past two years I had 2 working CPUs. does anyone think I have something going on other than a real hardware failure. btw, I ran Hardware Test from the CD and all tests passed.

Do you have CHUD tools installed? It use to be that you could do a stand-alone download, but lately, with 4.4, no longer available. With it you can disable one processor. There is also an Open Firmware command that will disable a cpu that retains that setting through restarts.
    Clearing the "cpus" Setting
The cpus setting is set in NVRAM and will affect all system restarts until the setting is changed or cleared. Use the instructions above to set "cpus" to a different value. To clear the cpus setting, there are three options.
    1. Use the Terminal application to clear the boot-args configuration variable. For example, you could enter the following command within the Terminal application:
    % sudo nvram boot-args=""
This command sequence clears the value of boot-args.
    2. You can clear boot-args by "zapping PRAM."
Restart the system and hold down the "Command-Option-P-R" keys until you hear the boot beep a second time. Release the keys and the system will restart normally with all CPUs recognized. Keep in mind that this also will clear all other custom NVRAM settings.
    3. Finally, you can clear the "cpus" setting by running System Preferences and clicking Startup Disk.
Then switch the startup disk to a different volume. This clears all contents of the boot-args configuration variable and is similar to using the Terminal application to clear this setting.

Well I have an iPhone 4 and it has only 1 sim card holder. It sounds like you are talking about the fake iPhone made in china. Beware it's a fake.

  • What the different of zone.cpu-cap & zone.cpu-shares?

    Hi folks,
anyone who can explain the different of zone.cpu-cap & zone.cpu-shares? I'll be thank for the response.
    Thanks

In a nutshell, caps set an upper bound and shares set a lower-bound for the amount of CPU that a zone gets.
    zone.capped-cpu
    As stated in zonecfg(1M):
Sets a limit on the amount of CPU time that can be  used
by a zone. The unit used translates to the percentage of
a single CPU that can be used by all user threads  in  a
zone,  expressed  as  a fraction (for example, .75) or a
mixed number (whole number and  fraction,  for  example,
1.25).  An  ncpu value of 1 means 100% of a CPU, a value
of 1.25 means 125%, .75 mean 75%,  and  so  forth.  When
projects  within  a capped zone have their own caps, the
             minimum value takes precedence.
The capped-cpu property is  an  alias  for  zone.cpu-cap
resource  control  and  is  related  to the zone.cpu-cap
resource control. See resource_controls(5).If you set a capped-cpu to 2 on a 16 processor machine, the zone will never get to use more than the equivalent of two CPUs. That is, it could end up with lots of things in the run queue while the system has idle processors because the zone has hit its CPU cap.
    zone.cpu-shares
zone.cpu-shares interacts with the fair share scheduler. It goes with the idea that a CPU is a terrible thing to waste. By setting the CPU shares for a particular zone to a value, it makes the zone get a minimum of a calculated percent of CPU if it is needed. The percentage that the zone gets is based on:
    (this zone's zone.cpu-shares) / sum(zone.cpu-shares across all zones)
    So, if z1, z2, and z3 are zones with 10 50 and 40 CPU shares, z1 would get at least 10% (10 / (10 + 50 + 40)) of the CPU time, z2 would get 50%, and z3 would get 40%. However, if z2 and z3 are idle, z1 could use 100% of the system's CPU resources.

  • Dual PM: Only one CPU showing

After a kernel panic which happened after encoding video with iSquint, I rebooted and only have one CPU! Anyone ever have this happen? I'm going to take my powermac to the apple service center nearby on Tuesday.

    Hi linuxuser;
Did you run the AHT to see if there is anything being reported as not working besides the CPU?
Taking it in to Apple sounds like a good plan from what I have read in other threads.
