Dual SG 300-10 mounting and cascading

SG 300-10 user manual states to not mount the switch on either side (I'm assuming this means the right or left ends as you face the front) and that they can be mounted either face-up or face down or flat). The specs further say that a 5" space must be "around all sides" of the unit.
Silly question is what does "all sides of the unit' really mean? (of course given you must mount is somewhere). Also, given the little feet supplied with the unit, it is implicit to me the bottom needs to be only about 1/32" from the horizontal surface it is placed on. If this is true, can this unit be mounted face down on a shelf such as the Leviton 47612-UBK (it's allowing the mounted units to have airflow between the unit and the cabinet back) and have a second SG 300-10 mounted in front of the first that is seperated from the first by either the dual feet or use separation spacers that will fill the available shelf space and maximize the distance between the units - all without degrading the inherent reliability of either?
Lastly, The two SG 300-10's are reaching the internet through a LINKSYS E4200 router. Is it better to have each SG 300-10 occupying its own dedicated port on the router OR to cascade one SG 300-10 to the other SG 300-10 then one of the LINKSYS E4200 router? If the answer is each occupying their own dedicated LINKSYS port, then would it be prudent to load one SG 300-10 with the most active ethernet lines to allow the other SG 300's port power management to shut it down?
Would appreciate any help I can get and thanks in advance.

Hi Robert,
You asked " The specs further say that a 5" space must be "around all sides" of the unit."
We have 11 fanless models within the Small business 300 series, you have two fanless models.  We also have models with fans, that allow air to flow from one side to another, not front to back.
As you have seen the Quick setup guide  says the following;
There are three ways to physically install the switch:
• Set the switch on a flat surface.
• Mount the switch on a wall (8-port devices only).
• Mount the switch in a standard rack (1 rack unit high).
Do not deploy the device in a location where any of the following conditions exist:
High Ambient Temperature—The ambient temperature must not exceed 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Centigrade).
Reduced Air Flow—Both side panels must be unobstructed to prevent overheating.
Mechanical Overloading—The device should be level, stable, and secure to prevent it from sliding or shifting out of position.
Circuit Overloading—Adding the device to the power outlet must not overload that circuit.
etc..  etc...
The switch should have a minimum of 5 inches (130 mm) of clearance on all sides
I personally see no issue with laying one switch on top of the other, with the rubber feet separating switches,
Robert, the bottom line is with clearance,  the internal temperature of the switches should not exceed 104 DegF or 40 DegC or it could affect the operation of the switch. Also,  you don't want to damage appliance cables or DC power supply on the back or the unit  or CAT5e or CAT6 cables on the front of the unit,   by compressing them too much.
That's pretty logical, hence we have given you some guidelines to follow for instalaltion..
You asked " Is it better to have each SG 300-10 occupying its own dedicated port on the router OR to cascade one SG 300-10 to the other SG 300-10 then one of the LINKSYS E4200 router?
I personally have no experience with this model of  linysys router, only the older WRT54G,  but the 300 series switches was designed to be  a standards based product that should be able to work with linksys or other equipment manufacturer routers.
here is a wee example,  my UC560, it has many Gigabit  LAN expansion ports for connection of the ESW or  300 series  switches. So it behaves a bit like the Linksys router, concentrating LAN ports for connection to the switch infrastructure.
Performance is pretty darn good, so it loads switches on in a STAR like topology.
But I also daisy chain one switch into another, and performance is pretty darn good.
There are benefits to both daisy chain with LAG,   and  direct link into centralized router.
Try it both ways, and you'll quickly get a feel if it matters or not.
regards Dave

  • Dual DVD's not mounting in 10.3.9

I have read countless posts in which for various reasons DVD's don't mount. There is a special case where older DVD's do mount, but newer ones (dual layer format, favored by Hollywood) do not. That is my case. People are invaribly advised to invest in a new optical drive.
I was suspicious, and decided to try restarting my older eMac in 9.2. Of course it's the same drive, just being driven by different software. All DVD's mount and play fine in 9.2.
Now, I know that not everybody has the option these days of booting up in 9.2. But at least I can scientifically state that the problem has to be software, not hardware.

    Welcome to the discussions.
Maybe I can give you some information on your problem.
Many of the newer Optical Drives are in fact crippled by the Firmware. This is done because of the restrictions placed on many computers by the manufactures for copyright reasons.
Older Operating Systems were not affected by these firmware restrictions, not until the advent of all of the DVD copying, were these firmware restrictions added, to avoid Lawsuits.
DUAL LAYER technolgy can be read and copied by many of the newer Optical Drives. But as you have correctly figured out the restrictions are implamented by FIRMWARE that cripple many of these functions.
Older Commercial DVD's can be read and copied with NO problems, but as time went by the Motion Picture Industry ADDED more and more encryption and security to there DVD's to hinder the ability to copy there product.
There are of course many of the Newer Optical Drives that are known as Region Free that will allow many of the imposed restrictions to be bypassed.
There are a couple of different options, one is to use a different Player, VLC
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/14738
This option only works on some DVD's
The other option is for you to Rip the DVD and re-copy it and remove all the security and encrytions, this allow it to play.

  • 10.4.6 refuses to mount and wrecks other programs

I have never had so much trouble, frustration, anger as trying to get 10.4.6 to work correctly. I have run disk utility till I’m blue in the face from the install disk, ran DiskWarrior 3.0.3 to death, ran TechTool 4.1.1 every utility on it, download fresh copies of the combo 10.4.6 (2X) and reran all the above utilities. Now, when I mount the install disk (10.4.3) and I want to open it to view the contents, it crashes the finder (at least 50X in a row). I opened Tiger Cache Cleaner and did a mid-level level cache cleaning and still can’t view the contents on the install disk because it does nothing but crash the finder. Other CDs and DVDs open so it can’t be the burner (Pioneer internal). I have lost the use of FileMaker Pro 8 ($300 loss) and Spell Checker ($100 loss) and numerous other programs. WHAT IS GOING ON OTHER THAN 10.4.6 IS CRAP?!?!?

I think I have things working. I booted into 10.3.9 which is my back up drive. 10.4.3 disk opens right up. Someone had said that FileMaker Pro crashes if ANY of the fonts are removed from the system library (or /library). I copied the system fonts from the disk back into 10.4.6. (I deleted all the foreign language fonts as I don’t use them and had no problems with 10.3.9 and earlier). Booted back in 10.4.3 update disk and ran Utilities again. Cleaned up a lot of the font permissions. Booted in 10.4.6 and now I can mount and view the contents on the install disk. Also, FileMaker Pro 8 is now working and Spell Checker has fixed itself. I’m wondering if removing any of the system fonts, including the foreign language ones (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc) causes weird strange problems?? Sorry about the venting but I have spent so much time trying to get 10.4.6 to work. Never had any problems from 9.0 on with upgrading.

  • I upgraded my pages '09 to 5.0.1 and now can't open an old saved doc because the volume "Untitled" isn't mounted and I should mount it and try opening again. What do I do??

I am writing a paper and cant open it. I can only find it from file on the top on my screen > open recent... and then a message pops up saying thatI couldn'y open "CSI Milton" because the volume "untitled" couldn't be mounted and it says that I should mount it and try openning the application again. WHAT DO I DO!?!?!

  • All downloads failing to mount and iTunes not recognising iPod!

My iBook G4 (Model No A 1055) needs alot of updates however i can't install anything. It downloads to the Desktop fine but when i go to open the attachment so i can actually install it a message comes up saing "The following disk images failed to mount" and the reason is a "corrupt image". I have tried to do this with Firefox, iTunes and Adobe and they all say the same!
I also now have issues with iTunes (7.2) which is all of a sudden not recognising my iPod shuffle (2nd gen). It doesn't come up in devices or anything when plugged in my iPod shuffle will just flash orange a few times and then nothing. I have tried to connect it to another (and much newer) Mac computer however it doesn't recognise it on there either.
Has technology just got so good my lappy is basically extinct and i need a new one or is there something i / Apple can do to help get me up to date with everything? Any help and feedback would be really appreciated.
    Thanks
    Louise

if you are running OS 10.3, it's pretty much obsolete
you can try getting OS 10.5 installed, but it can slow down the computer, 10.4 is not much use anymore either.

    Hello Robert,
First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

I would try it on a PC and see if you can format it, then put it back on the Mac and try again. If it's not seen on a PC, then there's the strong likelihood that there's a hardware issue; either the bridge/chip set or the HD itself is dying/dead. There's also the small possibility that the cable is faulty, so I'd try a different cable too.

  • Tiger randomly stopped allowing my External Hard drive to mount and...

Hello, I have been using an External Hard Drive (1 terabyte Seagate, new) for a couple months if not a year by now for saving movies, and all of my iTunes on it. Its been working wonderfully. However it recently stopped being able to mount citing invalid hard drive and gives me the options of either eject, ignore, or initialize. Im not sure what to do. And also my computer has been acting funny every since the day it started. I will walk you through it step by step.
July 6th I was surfing the web and unfortunetly clicked on a link that aparently contained a trojan. Or atleast thats what my Antivirus notified me of. I had downloaded the trojan some how without a pop up or anything telling me I was downloading anything. (using safari) So i ran a virus scan and saw one virus was in my system and that it couldnt be deleted or repaired by my antivirus program, Im working on getting rid of that but at the time I had my Seagate 1 terabyte external hard drive attached via fire wire to my Macbook. It was working then.
Later that day I unplugged my hard drive and took my laptop around a little bit, nothing unusual. Then when i came back later that night I tried plugging in my hard drive and a pop up stated that the hard drive was unable to mount and I could either eject, ignore, or initilize. I tried may different routes, restarting, letting it all rest, etc. And in Disk Utility i try to verify the disc and it says its unable to and needs repairs. So I try repairing the disc and it says unable to due to an error.
Then yesterday I went to my applications and noticed none of my applications are there anymore. These applications were saved on the internal hard drive so it was very odd to me. However i can still use spotlight to find and open my apps.
My question is, What can I do to allow my external hard drive to mount? I dont figure it is the trojan on my system but could it be? If so how would I fix it? Im mostly worried about getting the data off the external hard drive then I can reformat it. Or if theres a way to just get it back to normal without reformatting Id love to hear it. As for the applications missing and the trojan on my internal hard drive I can fix that, at the very least Ill just reboot my system with my original OS Disc and just start fresh, its about time anyways.
But please. If anyone has ever had their external hard drive just stop mounting and figured out what to do I would be ever so grateful to hear how you did so. The hard drive itself isnt damaged, its not making any unusual sounds. Whenever i plug it into the computer it acts like normal (turning on and what not) until the computer tells me it cannot mount then nothing happens. Ive looked online and it seems to be a software issue.
If its any help I was downloading a torrent (.avi, no viruses) at the time. I know sometimes if one file on the hard drive becomes corrupt the whole thing becomes unusable. Regardless I would appreciate it if anyone knows a way to at the very least retreive the files on the drive, but preferably know how to just get it back to normal. If i could get it to force mount (via terminal or something) I know which file would possibly be the corrupt one or something so I could work with it.

    Bejan:
Thanks for posting back with the pics of the messages from your computer. Disk Utility reports "Underlying task reported failure" when repairing a volume is a directory error which cannot be repaired by Disk Utility. Unfortunately, Disk Warrior may not be able to replace the rebuilt directory, either. Tech Tool Pro has a better chance of repairing it, although this particular directory issue can be stubborn, and is often rooted in a hardware issue. Your surest bet is to backup/clone the information on the HDD using a utility like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner, completely reformat and erase the HDD (directions below), then restore data from backup.
Formatting, Partitioning Erasing an External HDD
    • Connect external HDD to computer
    • Turn on external HDD
    • Start up computer and log in
    • Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility and launch DU.
    • Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
    • Select Partition tab in main panel.
    • Click on Options button
    • Select Apple Partition Map (PPC Macs) or GUID Partition Table (Intel Macs)
    • Click OK
    • Select number of partitions in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
For more partitions than one, after you have selected the number of partitions adjust the size of the partition by selecting the top partition and typing in the size; then move down if more adjustments need to be made.
(See Dr. Smoke’s FAQ Backup and Recovery for tips on partitioning external HDD)
    • Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
    • Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    • Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
    • Select Erase tab
    • Select the sub-volume (indented) under Manufacturer ID
    • Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
    • Click Erase button
    • Repeat above procedure to erase each partition
    • Quit Disk Utility.

i have a powerbook g4 aluminum. i have an external hard drive for it. a simple tech 100gig portable drive, almost brand new. i dont know what happened to it, but one day i was starting my computer up with it attached. it wounldnt fully start up, said "waiting for local disks" so i uplugged the external hard drive. now it wont mount and will only show up in the disk utility of my friends macbook. i tried to verify and repair, and this is the message i got.

could not read boot block (Input/output error)
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 non HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
Im in mexico writing a book and so i really need help on this one guys.

Hi, hjbugs, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Disconnecting the drive while your Powerbook was accessing it probably caused your problem. It may be repairable using DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro, but if you don't have access to one of those and aren't going to buy one, reformatting the drive with Disk Utility may be the only other way to make it usable again. If it contains data you need to recover first (i.e., data that isn't also stored on your internal HD or other storage media), download the free demo version of one of the data recovery utilities mentioned in this thread and use it to see what is recoverable. If the files you need are recoverable, buy the full version of one of the utilities and recover them.

yes you need the updates and patches.
Only some of the drivers that Windows will automatically install at times
and always make sure to insure it is using restore points
do all the maintenance andsuch as normal
use MS Security Essentials for AV is really top notch
    Clean disk space
Use WinClone new program to inisure you have a restore image

lower your font size unless you have difficulty
    MS Security Essentials is excellent
Then again maybe time to investigate Windows 8 RP (which uses Defender)

Windows has a software updater built into Windows and when you install the Boot Camp drivers then it will install an Apple software updater also. I believe Windows is set to automatically download and install your updates as does the Apple software Updater. They both will update the individual files it needs to periodically.
"Microsoft updates" and "Windows updates" are basically the same thing in Windows. Are you talking about the "Windows support software" when downloading from Boot Camp Assistant? Apple installs a software updater for it's Boot Camp drivers in Windows 7 so you can do it manually or automatically.
The "Hot Fix" your referring to is only for certain motherboards built from other Windows only computer manufacturers and does NOT pertain to any Apple computers.
If you have a problem with your computer then it's best to ask a specific question so we can help better.

  • Dual boot Mac OS X and Arch: Arch installer cannot find CD drive?

Hi, everyone!  A friend convinced me to install Arch about a month ago on my desktop and I've loved it so much that I want to dual boot Mac OS X and Arch on my Macbook Pro 7.1.
So I have a Macbook Pro 7.1.  I have partitioned the drive in Mac OS X and installed rEFIt.  I have the Arch x86_64 disk which I know works because I installed Arch on another computer.
When I boot from CD I get the familiar Arch screen with options "Boot Arch Linux, existing OS... etc."  I click boot Arch, and it starts to load.  However, it says "Waiting 30 seconds for device /dev/disk/by-label/ARCH_201005 ... ERROR: boot device didn't show up after 30 seconds... Falling back to interactive prompt.  /bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off."
After searching around the forums, some people said they had similar problems attempting to install via USB.  I used "cat /proc/scsi/scsi" and my CD drive does not show up in ramfs.. What can I do to install this amazing OS on my MB Pro 7.1?
    Thank you for your time!

Solved!  sledgehammer and MrE (sorry, I can't spell it) in IRC helped me out.  I had to download a newer iso that offers better Mac hardware support.  2010-12 iso
