Duplicating AirPort Network Port Configuration/IP Aliasing with AirPort

I'm attempting to set up my Apache server to serve test websites with my network (I'll be serving by IP, and firewalled from the wide world of the web (namely, my eyes only websites (so they can be tested on windows browsers (alas, the majority of my viewership)))). Im fairly confident I can set up the Virtual Hosts (watch this space, that my be my next problem). However, I'd like to set up my computer to have more than one IP address. Im running Panther (10.3.9). Im connected wirelessly to my network. I have tried the recommended: go to 'Network Port Configurations' and click 'Duplicate'. However, the Duplicate button is inactive for my AirPort card. How can I duplicate it so I can IP Alias my mac?

I don't mean to question your decision, but why do you need to have more then one IP address?
With virtual hosts, you can redirect to a countless number folders (virtual sites) with your computer only having one IP address.
<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName site1.yourwebsite.net
DocumentRoot /Library/WebServer/Documents/sites/site1.yourwebsite.net
</VirtualHost>
<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName site2.yourwebsite.net
DocumentRoot /Library/WebServer/Documents/sites/site2.yourwebsite.net
</VirtualHost>
Of course you should use be using a dynamic DNS service. I use http://dyndns.org. They offer free service and also a great custom DNS service.
For testing purposes you can change you local hosts settings via Netinfo Manager. For example you can set site1.local and site2.local to point to 127.0.0.1 and then your site will be private and work like you had hundreds of IP addresses.

  • How to recover from network port configuration deletion (airport)

a couple of years ago, i accidently deleted the network port configuration for AirPort in the Show pop-up menu. No big deal, i thought at the time. I don't have an AirPort card and I won't be using AirPort in this computer. Ok, I now have an old-style AirPort card (powerbook G3 firewire, 10.2.8) and the AirPort utility doesn't see that it's installed. I realized right away, the network doesn't have a port... so the system doesn't see it, right? So, how do I get this port back? Do I have to reload a new System entirely and not save previous network settings... or is there an easier way to recover from my blunder?

    Thanks Rob,
Glad to be here. Yeah, 10.2 works the same as 10.4. The problem with what you suggest is that I can no longer get airport as an option in Network port configs... so when I go to the new button all the other options are there EXCEPT AirPort. This is what I need to restore. I haven't checked, but I'm assuming I've nuked the pref panel out of the master library. So, I've messed up big time. I was looking for a way to recover that didn't involve reloading the whole system. This isn't like OS 9 and older where you can go and pick a little piece and stick it back into your system folder... I think. Thanks for the reply.

  • How can I change network port configuration default setting?

    Hello,
I am having trouble connecting to the internet. When I try to connect, it dials, rings, and then has a long tone, then disconnects. Preferences>Network>Assist Me>Diagnostics>Location>Network Port has Built in Ethernet chosen. I unchoose it, choose Internal Modem. It goes on to try to connect, than asks me if I have DSL or Cable (I don't) I choose no, asks me if there is anything else to restart, no, I choose. It then says to check configuration. I go back till the location page then continue, continue, then it connects. It won't stay selected to Internal Modem. I have checked its box and dragged it to the top (and unchecked and dragged Ethernet to the bottom). This happens 90% of the time but not always. I can connect to the internet, but have to go through this. I don't have Built in Ethernet.
    Thanks,
    Maria

Open Network preferences. Select Internal Modem from the list and click on the Configure button. Click on the PPP tab. Fill in the required information for your dial up ISP including your username and password (for your dial up account.) Check the box to save your password. Click on the Apply button. Click on the TCP/IP tab and select DHCP from the Configure IPv4 drop down menu, click on the Apply button. Click on the Modem tab and select the modem from the drop down menu that corresponds to the one you are using or have installed internally in your computer. Click on the Apply button. Quit Network preferences. This should have you all set. Use Internet Connect to initiate the dial up.

  • Can't Delete Network Port Configurations

In the "Network" preference in System Preferences I have found a few new Port Configurations that should not be there. When I go to delete them the application just asks me to confirm (which I do) and then does nothing, they are still there. The Port Configurations are titled "BlueetoothDUN" (I also have a normal "Bluetooth" Port Configuration which I do not want to delete), "Ethernet Adaptor (en2)", and "Ethernet Adaptor (en3)" (I also have one called Built-in Ethernet which I do not want to remove). How do I remove these useless Port Configurations?
    Thanks in Advance

    Oops, should've been...
    /Users/nnnn/Library/Preferences/com.apple.internetconnect.plist
Where nnnn is the user's name. :-O
Hmmm, when you tried to delete them before, where you logged in as an Admin user?
I'm thinking these might be System settings instead of User settings.
Wolfdude96, Not sure this will help, but try trashing...
/Users/nnnn/Library/Preferences... the whole Prefs folder there.
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration... the whole SysConfig folder.
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.sharing.firewall.plist
    /Library/Preferences/com.apple.AppleFileServer.plist
Reboot... of course you dont have to trash them, you can just move them to the desktop to drag back if it doesn't work.

  • Port configuration problem

After updating Safari, my "port configuration" does not recognize the built-in ethernet option and I can't connect to the internet using Safari. Everything else works properly - Any suggestions?

Hi Jim, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Are you saying that it doesn't show at all in Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations?
If you haven't yet try this...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, when complete reboot.

  • Network Port default setting

    Hi all,
I'm having trouble connecting to the internet. I click connect, it dials, tries for a while, then a message comes up check modem setting. I go to preferences, click network, click assist me, diagnostics, location, choose network port configuration. This is always on Builtin Ethernet, which I don't have. So I click Internal modem, continue, it dials again, then asks me if I have DSL, I say no, It asks me if I can restart anything else, no again. Then I click go back til I get to the location page again then continue, continue, continue. Then it connects to the internet. How can I get it to stop defaulting to Built in Ethernet and just stay on internal modem on the Network port configuration page??

    Hi,
If you are using the iSCSI share storage in a Failover Cluster will need 5 or more NICs:

  • Sun Cluster with Netapps - iSCSI quorum and network port

I am proposing Sun cluster with Netapps 3020C.
    May I know
    1) OS is Solaris 9. The SUN OSP says that we need to obtain an iSCSI license from Netapps. Is this the iSCSI initiator software for Solaris 9 to talk to the NAS quorum? Or do I need to purchased a 3rd party iSCSI initiator ?
    2) We provide 2 network ports for the Netapps private NAS LAN. Is it a must to cater another dedicated network port for the iSCSI communication with the quorum?
    3) If we need purchase a 3rd party iSCSI initiator, where can we get this? I have checked Qlogic and Cisco, they are both not suitable for my solution.
    Appreciate your help

    Hi,
    1) OS is Solaris 9. The SUN OSP says that we need to
obtain an iSCSI license from Netapps. Is this the
iSCSI initiator software for Solaris 9 to talk to the
NAS quorum? Or do I need to purchased a 3rd party
iSCSI initiator ?Have a look at http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/817-7957/6mn8834r2?a=view
I read the "Requirements When Configuring NAS Devices as Quorum Devices"
section as this is the license for the iSCSI inititator software.
So you need to enable iSCSI on the netapps box and need to install a package from netapps (NTAPclnas) on the cluster nodes.
    2) We provide 2 network ports for the Netapps
private NAS LAN. Is it a must to cater another
dedicated network port for the iSCSI communication
    with the quorum?Have a look at http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-0580/6n30eahcc?a=view#ch4_quorum-9
    I don't read such a requirement there.
    3) If we need purchase a 3rd party iSCSI initiator,
where can we get this? I have checked Qlogic and
Cisco, they are both not suitable for my solution.
Appreciate your helpI don't thibk you need such a 3rd party iSCSI initiator, unless this is stated in the above docs.

  • NAS connection with Exadata on Network Port

    Hi,
What I found on exadata and NAS.
Can I connect the database servers to external storage?
Yes, you may use the network ports on the database servers to connect to external storage via NFS or iSCSI. However, the Fibre Channel Over Ethernet (FCoE) protocol is not supported or allowed.
My question is : What would be impact on performance if we connect Exadata with NAS on network port as NFS?
Does any one using ? I want to have all backup on disk and from disk to tape kind of.
    Thanks

If you can afford it look at using zfs over infiniband for the best bandwidth if you go for 73xx or 74xx models. You will also get dual controllers for full redundancy.
Oracle's benchmark backup figures of 7 tb an hour are based on this setup If you go for a standard or 10 gig nfs connection you will get considerably slower speeds.
    Thanks

  • ThinkPad USB 3.0 dock network port has problems with our Cisco 6509 switch

We purchased a ThinkPad USB 3.0 dock for and X1 carbon and the main issue we are having is the network port does not seem to work with our Cisco 6509 switch. I tried updating the firmware on the dock but it still hasn't fixed the issue. I was wondering if anyone else had run into this problem with any other networks out there.

I'm seeing the same issue with a ThinkPad W520.  When I connect my ethernet cable directly to the laptop, my internet speeds are on par with my service provider of 18 Mbps.  When I move that cable to the dock, I will only see 1.5 Mbps.  I have two displays attached to the dock and I'm running Windows 7.  I've updated the dock firmware and have installed the latest system drivers.  Is there anything else to try?

  • Problem with the error at DIO port configuration

I am working on the design of a model of a computer controlled Fuel Injection system using Gasoline Direct Igniton technology. I am using PCI-6025E as my data card and SCB-100 Connector block. My application is to get the digital input from the shaft encoder and the solenoids[acting as Inlet and exhaust valves]get actuated according to the VI. When I am trying to run the program theres an error 10001 occured at DIO port configuration. The statement is as" The error occured at the input string, the arrangement or ordering of the characters in the string is not consistent with the expected ordering". I checked the shaft encoder[S5S-50]pin out connections using an oscillograph and the voltages are as expected. Please let me
know the possible areas where I can figure out the error.

    Maruthi;
You are probably using VIs that are not supported by that DAQ device. That DAQ device of yours only allow unstrobed digital updates, meaning that the digital lines will be updated by Software calls.
Since you probably need high speed/accuracy on your digital updates, you would be better served by using the PCI-6534 instead.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can Appletalk be active on two network ports for printing?

Here's the core of my question: Can I keep Appletalk active on my Airport network port (in order to print to a wireless print server on an HP Laserjet 2100M) and simultaneously keep it active on my Ethernet port (in order to print to a Brother HL 2700CN networked through my router)?
Nothing I have read gives me to believe I can have Appletalk active on more than one network port. If that is the case, my second question would be:
I there some other way to print to either printer on the network without having to turn off Appletalk manually on the ports not being used?
    Here's the configuration I'm facing
    G4 Quicksilver 10.3.9
HP Laserjet 2100M with wireless Belkin DP-311P print server
Brother HL-2700CN wired to Belkin Wireless-G router
I would appreciate any help on this, even if it's the simple response, "No, you can't print to both without manually de/activating Appletalk."

for file sharing between computers running 10.4.x and 10.3.x.
actually, not for that either. 10.4 has dropped support for AppleTalk-only File Sharing to make way for Intel Macs and their protocols. 10.4 does still support AppleTalk printing.
AppleTalk would be required to print to older Apple LaserWriters that do not support LPD/LPR printing. In all but two cases, the printers have no Ethernet port, so a Bridge device or software would be required:
    Personal LaserWriter NTR
    Personal LaserWriter 320
    LaserWriter Select 310
    LaserWriter Select 360
    LaserWriter 4/600 PS
    LaserWriter IIf
    LaserWriter IIg (Ethernet)
    LaserWriter Pro 600
    LaserWriter Pro 630 (Ethernet)
Some third-party wireless Access points do not pass AppleTalk packets at all, and cannot be used to print to that class of older LaserWriters.
In 10.3.9 and previous, AppleTalk may still be used for File Sharing with older Macs.

  • Deleted CDMA USB Modem from Port Configurations... Can't get it back!

A while back, I was trying out a wireless USB CDMA modem. I didn't really like it and was mainly just using it for testing purposes, and after I was done with it I deleted the port configuration out of my Network Config, thinking A) I'd never need it again and B) It would repopulate or at least be able to be recreated if I wanted to use it again.
Well, this weekend I'm out of town in an area where I don't have an internet connection regularly and need the ability to connect without relying on WIFI. So I reactivated the USB modem and went on my way. As soon as I put the card in, though, nothing happens. Normally the card would automatically detect and even open up its own connection software in the title bar. This time, nothing. So I boot into Windows and test it out there: works fine. Detects, connects, loads webpages, everything. So it's not the card.
I go back into OS X and see if there's anyway to manually add it. I check in System Profiler, and sure enough, under USB the card is recognized. Not in modems, though, but I can't remember if it populated there before. Anyway, I go into Network Config, try to add a port, but the only things available are the typical Ethernet, Airport, Bluetooth, etc. No USB, no CDMA modem, nothing I need.
So what I'm thinking is, when I deleted the old CDMA modem setting in Network Port Configs, its pretty much permanently deleted it. My question is, is there any way for me to manually get it back? I really could use the benefit of this card at the moment.
    Thanks for any help,
    Bryan

I had not heard of that brand. Out here we get a lot of stuff from China and Korea.
After I wrote that last night, I had a closer look at my settings and the CDMA modem I have is shown in the Network Configurations panel -- yours is not, you say.
Sorry, if I was not clear about the point concerning Bluetooth. That panel provides a list of ALL modem drivers, so I was suggesting that you had a look in there, in case there might be a suitable modem driver you could use.
I had two of these modems (one was stolen) the first used that Null modem driver while the other used a Huawei driver that I had to work hard to make the local company find.
I just looked at the Franklin Support pages and as you say, they do not appear to have a driver listed for Macs, only the user guide.
As a late thought, and not wishing to sound funny at all: have you tried the other USB port? With one of the CDMA modems I had it would work perfectly in one port but in the other the computer never recognised it.

  • Primary network port (en0) is not reporting its hardware address properly

We have always had no problems with watching instant movies on Netflix until today for some reason, called Netflix and they said to contact Apple. We tried to reinstall the player and everything but they found out the "primary network port (en0) is not reporting its hardware address properly", not sure what that means. Since my phone support is expired they won't help me on the phone, so I'm hoping someone might have a solution for me here. Thank you.
Here's what the netflix tech support email said:
During the course of troubleshooting your experience watching instantly from Netflix on your Apple computer we discovered that your primary network port (en0) is not reporting its hardware address properly. The Microsoft Silverlight player that Netflix utilizes for watching instantly requires the correct hardware address of this network port to play back digitally protected content. The primary network port is typically the Ethernet port on the computer (with the exception being the Macbook Air) and reasons for playback failure can include hardware failure of the port itself or incorrect software configuration.
Please contact Apple for assistance with properly configuring the network interface(s) on your Apple computer at http://www.apple.com/support/expert or contact your local Apple Store for an appointment.
    Thank you for choosing Netflix,

I have the same issue on a MacMini with a defunct Ethernet port. The primary port is en0 however it's an Apple a/b/g Airport card and apparently that combination isn't seen as valid by silverlight.
