DVCPRO HD to DVCAM

Is there a way to convert DVCPRO HD 720p files to DVCAM so I can edit offline in DVCAM in FCP and then online later with the original files (retaining timecode)?

In the advanced format presets there is a NTSC DV converter.
Going to take some time however.

  • Help!  DVCPro HD to DVCam not working!

I've got an upcoming screening and I'm trying to output a 1080i 23.98 DVCPro HD clip to DVCam tape. I dropped the HD file into a DV sequence but all I'm getting is black on the tape. What am I doing wrong?

    #8 External Monitor Viewing.
    Shane's Stock Answer #8:
A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

  • DVCPRO HD footage and FCP 5

    Hi All,
I have a client I am working with next week who has a bunch of footage that was shot with an HVX 200 Panasonic witth the P2 cards. The shooter has already captured the video (as quicktime files, I believe HD quicktime files) to an external hard drive that has firewire 400 and USB 2 inputs. So, I don't need to capture, which would be a problem b/c I don't have a capture card or HD peripherals to edit.
Anyway, I have a Power Mac G5 dual 2.3 gig machine with 2.5 gigs of RAM and an HD 23 inch Apple Cinema Display. Will I be okay working with this footage, being that it has already been captured for me. I just need to edit some SOTs, VO's and maybe a short news package or two from these clips. I am supposed to deliver the final product as standard DVCAM for the client. My thinking is that I will edit the piece(s) and export using QT conversion, Quicktime movie with DV/DVCPRO NTSC codec, 29.97 frames and 720 x480 size. Correct??
    Any input is much appreciated!
    Scott

    There are a couple solutions.
One is wait for Apple to release the HDV 24 codec, but there is no telling when that is.
Two is to capture at the DVCPRO HD codec, but then you need the JVC HDV deck and a Kona LH capture card:
    http://www.aja.com/pdfs/AJAwhitepaperHDV.pdf
    Three...(ok, a FEW solutions)...LumiereHD or HDVxDV.
I hope Apple releases that codec soon though...

  • Fcpx imports DVCPro HD 1080i always as NTSC/1080p

    Hallo to All,
I have a problem importing DVCPro HD 1080i50 material in fcpx 10.0.3. The imported clips always appear as NTSC 1080p clips and they are not longer interlaced, even if my project is ProRes 442 HQ 1080i 1920x1080. How can I import an DVCPro HD 1080i clip in the right way?
    Thnks for helping
    callingernie

I tried making all sequence settings DV but still no luck. Just get a black screen on playback of tape. Very weird. Frame size, pixel ratio, compressor all DV.
I have a screening coming up soon so I'll probably have a post facility make a DVCAM from the HDCAM master tape, which which will probably look better anyway than doing it in FCP from the DVCPro file. Still it would be nice to figure out why it isn't working.

  • DVCPRO HD - 24p from HDX900 not smooth

I am preparing to do an HD project on my FCP system. This weekend I ran some tests by downconverting a DVCPRO HD test tape w/ 24p and 30p footage with pans and other stuff to Beta-SP AND separately capturing thru FW400. The DC went thru an AJA SDI to component converter. Sweet little box. The Beta downconvert and resulting edits worked with no problem. The FW capture and edit (from a 1200a deck) led to mixed results.
If the edit timebase was 23.98, everything looked okay, but since my final output is SD via compressor, the SD file compressed from that timeline (to uncompressed 8-bit) showed problems in intrepreting the pans - the single problem I'm getting is an extra, duplicate frame of video every five frames.
This can be counted by pressing the forward motion cursor several times. Every 4th and 5th frame are the same. When you play it's a juddery effect. The Beta doesn't show this. The original 23.98 timebase timeline doesn't show this. Other manifestations of timelines (29.97) do. I believe this is 'normal' 24p footage. I captured with an easy setup of 720p24 and 720p30 to see if one got rid of the problem, but it didn't.
My ultimate goal is to downconvert to Beta first, so it won't affect me. But what if I wanted to go direct, as many recommend I do? I'd be in a bad way. So, what might I be missing? Much appreciated.
    Chris

Just to clarify, (forget about the Bea downconvert part of my story) the way I'm going in this case is cutting the HD on a 23.98 timeline. So far, thankfully, that works. What's not working is the down-format. Ultimately, that will be in the form of a Betacam SP or DVCAM dub and certainly an SD DVD.
When I create the uncompressed 8-bit file in compressor, and reset the EZ setup in FCP to the BMD Decklink extreme codec, the remported file shows the camera pans displaying the extra fifth frame. I'm just trying to find a way to smooth out this part of the process. The experts on the group say creating SD through compressor at the end of the line is the thing to do. So I'm not so certain any of this points to my going the wrong way. But I'll be the first to admit I'm at my infancy in experience with HD and 24p. It get's a bit confusing.

  • Compression diff. btw "video" and "DV/DVCpro-NTSC"?

    Hello,
I would like to export a sequence in FCP as a quicktime file. My source material is mini-Dv NTSC and was captured as such. What is the best compression setting for me to use in export--> using Quicktime conversion, in order for me to retain optimal quality. I guess I would have put compression to "none" but I don't have that option under settings --> compression settings. I am wondering between "video" and "DV/DVCpro-NTSC", I also notice that they take diffrent amount of time to export, does this have anything to do with the quality? I will be outputting to DVCAM and making transfers to BetaSP.
    Thanks alot,
    Lela

It's really just a habit I got into back when I was having trouble playing back long, heavy composite projects. It worked, and now, because it doesn't usually take alot of time (gotta go out for coffe and a smoke anyway) I still do it.
As for the archiving. My stuff goes to most clients on Betacam and I do make a DV copy. I just like to keep the show around for a bit, till I'm sure they aren't going to ask for another Betacam copy for a while. So maybe "archive" wasn't the right word.
    Have fun

  • Exporting DVCPRO HD 1080i

I have completed a multi-track (6video tracks/9 audio tracks)13 minute edit. Video , titles, stills, music, voice...just a normal edit really. Now I want to make a DVD. In the past with SD DVCAM I always export my multi-track edit into a one piece AVI before converting to mpeg for DVD. This always seems to clean up any strange things from happening to my final DVD video.
Now when I export my DVCPRO HD 1080i muti-track project to a one piece DVCPRO HD 1080i file it comes out missing little clips and some titles....?
    Any comments or ideas?
    Thanks,
    Mark Voigt

I have taken footage in HD 1080i. Presently I need to make a movie in DVD format using my HD footage, but I would like to assemble my footage in HD so that if in the future I want to upgrade it won't be a problem. So can I make my movie in HD1080i and export it to DVD format? If so, how? Or if I make it in DVD format is there an easy way to upgrade my movie to HD in the future?

  • Uncompressed 8 bit vs dvcam hd

I have some 1280x720 (29.97) footage shot with the HVX. I need to re-compress the footage to play in my FCP and Im trying to figure out the correct compression. I used uncompressed 8 bit and it worked fine. I was just wondering if that or dvcam was the better compression?

I would stick with DVCPRO HD 720. Looks good. Plays well.
Uncompressed will eventually bog down your editing
    as you get more layers.

  • Capturing bad DV/DVCAM tape

I asked a similar question a while back, but the jury seems to be out on it all.
I get this - http://i.imgur.com/LUNwCTm.jpg - a lot when capturing bad DV/DVCAM/HDV footage via firewire into FCP 7.
I know that I can change the user preferences to warn after capture or make new clip. It doesn't matter. FCP stops the capture process all together and makes me restart the capture now with a new clip. I've tried capture now, clip capture, capture with non-controllable device, ect. - none of them work for my situations.
I think the only answer is to re-record the footage to a second DV deck, or use some 3rd party capture software that will allow me to capture across the breaks. Any recommendations? I'm about to try iMovie to see if it'll take it. I found sometimes it's not a picky as FCP.
    Thanks,
    Jarrod

The only thing you didn't mention is cleaning the playback device heads.
If you are dealing with just DV/DVCPro, you may want to try using LiveCapturePlus (if I remember correctly) from Squarebox. I'm not sure if it runs on current versions of OSX but I found it very useful back in the DV day.
If you go the Dub route, make sure you start the RECORDING deck first so it begins to laydown new timecode before the incoming signal is detected. This way the old tape TC will be ignored. If you send the signal to the recording deck before starting to record, the recording deck will simply accept the incoming TC and you do not address the problem.
    Good luck.

  • Mixing Hi-8, VHS into DVCPRO HD 720p/24 Timeline?

I've got a DVCPRO HD 720p/24 timeline. I need to bring in material from other old school formats (Hi-8, VHS, mini-DV) to be added in. How should I go about this? I'm thinking copying all to DVCAM, then digitizing in. From there, do I need to Upconvert? Or can I just drop it all in the Timeline and work? How does one deal with the 29.97 / 23.97, interlace/progressive and 4:3 / 16:9 differences?
Any advice, or pointers to discussions, tutorials, links, etc would be greatly appreciated. I'm sure this is a really common headache-inducing question, but I can't seem to locate an answer.
    Thanks!

First, in the CANVAS, turn on IMAGE+WIREFRAME in the box drop down menu. Then, Layer your footage. Put the main shot on V1. Now put it again on V2. Double click on the image on V1 and crop one side until it starts to cut into the video. Click on the clip on V2, go to the canvas and drag it until it is visible. Throw filters on it to set it apart. Gaussian blur to REALLY blur it out. Perhaps the 3-way color corrector and turn the saturation all the way down to get B&W, or just partway down. Anything to make it look interesting. Put the same clip on V3, double click on V1 again and crop the other side. Drag the filters from the clip on V2 to the clip on V3 (you might need to crop the clip on V2 to clear the area on that other side) by double clicking on V2 to get it into the viewer, then click on the filters tab and drag and drop.
Upconverted stuff look good? As good as it can. I worked on a History Channel show that was easily 50% DV, VHS and betaSP....while all of our A ROLL and Interviews were DVCPRO HD. The archival stuff was not. It looked decent. It will NEVER look like real HD...give up that ghost right now. You are taking a smaller image and blowing it up 200-300%. And if it is DV...it is already highly compressed. Compressor will do a better job of smoothing out the edges and ridding of the interlacing than FCP can. A terranex box will do even better, as will a Kona 3.

  • Problem capturing DVCAM material

    Hi,
I have got some material shot in pal 4:3 on DVCAM. I am using a Panasonic AJ-D250 DVCPRO dec and Final Cut Pro 5 HD to capture and edit the material. However, when I capture the material using log and capture, Final Cut can read the timecode but there is no video/audio signal coming through?
    I am capturing using
'DV PAL 48 kHz' with the 'Firewire Pal Basic' connection.
The deck is playing back ok when a monitor is attached.
Any help that you may be able to offer will greatfully received.
    Many thanks
    Ross.

DVCAM (sony) and DVCPRO (panasonic) really don't play well together at all.
An example: I can play dvcpro on my dsr-11 DVCAM deck, but I get no code and cannot capture.
I don't think those two companies like each other too well. Best bet: rent a dv cam deck, or buy a dsr-11 if you're going to be doing a lot of this stuff.

  • DV, DVCpro footage doesn't fill canvas

Why doesn't DVCAM or DVCPro50 footage fill the canvas screen exactly at 100% ? There always seems to be a couple of pixels of black revealed on the sides.
This doesn't matter on NTSC screens, but more and more people are watching DVDs now on computer media players and other progressive viewing sources that show every single pixel.
If you take any DV format and play it in the quicktime player there's always extra rattiness, black, etc. around the edges. Is this inherent of the DV/ DVCPRO format? Do you always have to resize your footage to 104% or something in FCP to get rid of this? Does resizing your video to another size other than 100% degrade your look ?

kinda the nature of video. you get the same thing when displaying underscan on a monitor. you could try putting a single pixel crop around the edges.

  • Capturing other than DV/DVCAM

I am shooting with Betacam SP, and capturing to DV using a Sony DSR-45P.
If I want to capture to anything else than DV - let's say DVCPro or uncompressed (in order to get more coloour depth or just higher quality) can I do this? Or is the DSR-45P only letting me to capture using DV?

I always thought DVCPro is a better format than DV/DVCAM<<</div>
A lot of the confusion may be due to the fact that there are multiple "DVCPro" formats:
    DVCPro, aka DVCPro 25
DVCPro 50, which was adopted early on by many local broadcasters to replace their aging BetaSP gear.
    DVCPro 100
So to get 4:2:2 I would need something like Aja Kona to be able to capture in DVCPro-50<<</div>
Not exactly. While, yes you can convert to some of the other formats with the proper equipment, if you're source is of a lower quality, you really shouldn't expect the final output to be that much better (if any). If you're shooting on DVCam (4:1:1) and trying to convert to a 4:2:2 format you'd be MUCH better off shooting in that format in the first place.

  • DVCPRO NTSC PROBLEM

Hi - I am trying to capture a DV tape recorded in the DVCPRO NTSC format.
I have always worked in PAL as I am UK based and now when I look for a DVCPRO NTSC setting in final cut there is nothing. But there is a DVCPRO PAL setting.
The tape plays fine in the player and I can monitor the picture on an external monitor, and the audio signal is coming into final cut ok. But the preview is disabled and when I try capturing, fcp aborts with an error that there is no video signal.
The system all works fine as I regulary capture DV and DVCAM footage - both NTSC and PAL.
I have tried setting fcp to all the available NTSC presets in easy setup and nothing works.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
    Thanks
    Casey

Try DVPro50. I think that's what you're looking for. If you look at the compressor used for dvpro50 it's DVCpro50

  • DVCPRO to DV TimeCode? Help!

I'm new to FCP5 and need help bad. I have DVCPRO footage trans dubed to DVCAM with same time code. But when I go into FCP it's at 29.97? Will the EDL time code match the master DVCPRO code when I come out of FCP for my online?
I tried 23.98 but I have to render everything I place on the time line? I need help bad, I'm dam near bald after 2 days.
[email protected] if you need me.
    Thanks.
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   Quad loaded.

Let me start again. I used the HD 1200 Panasonic, to dub by firewire with the same time code onto DVCAM with the DSR 45.
I am playing the tapes on the DSR20 to go into my G5/FCP. My worry is the time code matching in the end of the procees when I use this EDL for my on line? I understand 23.98 is the rate to use, but it will not work without rendering? If II go in normally at 29.97 there is no problem, but is it safe in the end.
    Thanks.
