DVD-RAM Type 2
9.4 Gb – 4.7Gbs on each side – Panasonic – Out of it's case
But my MBP (2010) refuses to read it either blank side. Is this right?
I had great plans to save a bunch of junk from my machine.
Thank you

There is nothing in your MBP's specifications indicating that it can read or write DVD-RAM media.

WHERE CAN I BUY A 5.2GB DVD-RAM TYPE 1 CARTRIDGE
I have spent hours looking on the net. Do they make them anymore?
My DVD-RAM drive is a Matshita PD-2 LF-D110. Revision A110.
Can I use a 2.6GB Type 1 Cartridge in this drive?
If I upgrade to Tiger will I be able to use my DVD-RAM drive?
Power Mac G4 AGP Graphics Mac OS X (10.3.9) DVD RAM Matshita PD-2 D110I know this does not directly answer you question, but you may want to consider getting a new DVD-/+R burner; they are less than $40 online (DVR-110D, ND-3550A, try newegg.com as one resource).
It may be less frustrating than trying to use your old DVD-RAM drive.
If you really want to use DVD-RAM, the DVR-110D firmware can be altered to support DVD-RAM (the non-US versions are marketed as such), or the LG GSA-4163B is also a DVD-RAM capable drive out-of -the-box.
In any OS prior to Tiger, you will need to download & run PatchBurn for iApp/Finder burn support. -
DVD-RAM drive from G4 AGP in the MacPro?
Just bought a new MacPro. I would like to move my DVD-RAM drive from my trusty old Sawtooth to the MacPro. I have a lot of old Type I cartridges with archived data on them that I would like to keep using, but on the new machine, since my husband is wanting me to give him the G4. The DVD_RAM Type1 cartridges are like "monster" ZIP disks and really convenient and dependable for backups.
An Apple Tech Support rep said it would "probably" work on the MacPro, but that I should post the question on the Forums as well, to see what others had to say. Any takers?
Also, if there is a new drive I could purchase that would accommodate the Type I cartridges and technology, I'd be interested in that information. I did research on these kinds of drives for my G4 some months ago, but found it hard to determine if there was a new "Superdrive" style drive with this capability.I had to look up PATA and found info at http://www.directron.com/patasata.html to be very informative.
I know that my hard drives use a connector that looks like the parallel connectors in these photos. I'm not sure about the optical drives, because I've never had a reason to take them out or change them until now. I'll have to look inside and see.
They do talk in this article about the bulk of PATA connectors being more significant than the new serial ATA connectors. Considering the comments shared by "the hatter" that could be a problem. I'll check this out in the next couple of days and see is any hindrances regarding space come to light.
I'd still like to know if there is a new optical drive out there somewhere that could provide a DVD-RAM (Type I cartridge and newer formats) option for the MacPro. I hope someone can share some knowledge about that.
Thanks for your comments Ned and hatter. -
Problem: DVD-RAM can no longer be read on MBP C2D
The "MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857D" in my MacBook Pro C2D is said to have read (but not write) support for DVD-RAM media.
During the first few weeks of its lifetime, reading DVD-RAMs definitely worked. But now, no more, no matter what brand of media I try.
All other types of optical media continue to work as advertised (read and write).
I wonder whether this is a physical defect (but then why doesn't it affect other types of media?) or an issue caused by recent sopftware updates (but when I boot from an external DVD-drive using the very original MacOS DVD with no updates at all, why do I still not get read support on the internal drive?).
AFAIK there has not been any recent firmware update for this model. So what can be the reason? Should I let Apple swap the drive? Has anyone else observed the same issue?

MBP C2D Mac OS X (10.4.8) MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-857DHey Grant,
thought you'd like to know my "cleaning the lens with a cloth" worked fine - uh... but for about three days only, then back to the same old, same old.
I'd originally slid a business card covered with a lens cleaning cloth (from my camera bag) to clean the lens, and although the cloth emerged mostly pristine, I figured it must've done the trick as the drive started working again.
So this time, I decided to go in deeper. I actually took the whole drive apart - case off, drive out, drive dismantled - and I had a long look around to see if any parts looked dirty or damaged...
I found just one thing - the small silver rod on which the read/write head travels (the servomechanism that moves up and down the disc radius as it reads/writes) had some 'oily gunk' at the point where the travelling-head's 'sleeve' met it - when I tried to move the head manually up and down the rod, it sort of staggered along. So I cleaned off the gunk with a cotton bud and then slid the drive-head up and down a few times 'till it seemed to run freely.
Put everything back - and fired up my Mac Pro. And the drive has been 100% fine since then - two whole weeks!
Maybe this time I've cracked it? (for my drive at least)

Hp Dvd-Ram Gh80n not recognizing blu-ray dvds
I am running windows 7 home premium. My Hp Dvd-Ram Gh80n does not recognize any blu-ray dvds -these are store bought. I have tried several different dvds, & was able to play them on different devices (IE: ps3, laptop, dvd player). Device manager shows no issues or updates avail. auto play is checked, tried a read disc from command prompt-get a device not ready & status no media for list volume. If i put in a NON blu-ray I get the dvd info with healthy status.
This question was solved.

We have a macbook pro with 2 gig of RAM and osx tiger 10.4.8. We have a DVD RAM drive due to the nature of our work. This drive always seemed to take longer to sin up thn other drives but I just assumed this was o.k Now the drive simply spits all DVD types out, but plays CD's just fine which seems odd to us. We would like to know if it could be someting simple before we send it away to apple. Any suggestions please?
From my experience it sounds like you have a faulty drive. Replacement would be the option.

I have a half dozen DVD-Ram disks (from my now-dead DVR). They mount on the Desktop and I can see the contents (VRO and associated files). I am exploring the various Toast, Streamclip (etc.) options to play/rescue the files. Once that is done, how can I erase (and rewrite/reuse) the disks? Neither Toast 8 nor Disk Utility seem happy with formatting/erasing this media. Any ideas?
~ KeriAh,... makes sense. Thanks! And here's what it says [below].
So, it seems to say I cannot "erase" ... but I can "overwrite" (??), which is splitting a hair finer would have occurred to me.
Okay. Then, how would I "overwrite" the files -- what application could I use to do this? Toast? Other??

To PLUS or to MINUS or to DVD-RAM that is my ? ? ?
When do i use PLUS and MINUS DVD's ?
Can I use a DVD-RAM in my late 2009 edition iMac (3.06GHz) ?talmy0 wrote:
Plus or Minus can be used interchangeably. DVD-RAM is not supported.
OK thanks for the info and confirmation.
To bad Apple does not install those types of drives that do support DVD-RAM.
I'm lucky here because i do have an external FireWired LG burner that does do DVD-RAM. -
DVD-RAM read/write in OSX 10.8.2
I have a number of disks in the DVD-RAM format which are backups from a family member. I need to resurrect this now dated, but still quite effective DVD standard. I have acquired a later Model Matshista (Panasonic) drive, Model SW-9576S, one of their faster and more recent DVD-RAM cartridge drives. It is housed in a new IDE=>USB enclosure. It works fine on my 17" MBP using Win 7 in bootcamp, both reading and writing. I believe I have an OSX software problem, since on the Mac side of the machine, the drive mounts, and files can be seen, but they cannot be read, and I cannot write a file to new media. All of these cartridge DVD-RAM disks come from the factory formatted as "UDF". I tried to format one for the Mac using disk utility, but it did not work, returning a disk error message and not allowing the format.
I know this is supposed to work, and DVD-RAM standard is still supported. It has some advantages, particularly its ability to function as a hard drive with unlimited read/write cycles.
I would be grateful for any help....DVD-RAM cartridges have a lock button for physical access to read/write. Look for it.
MOST 3rd party DVD recorders from Samsung and others will read/write DVD-RAM in modern units. Check their specs. The Apple Superdrive does NOT work with DVD-RAM
There is more issues about compatibility from the external USB 2.0 drive case onboard chip talking with USB 3.0 machine than with the Panasonic unit.
You can remove the DVD from the case and try using it in the unit as well. The case just functions as an extra protection for fingers and dust.
IF it mounts, work with Disk Utility to check its abilities. If you can see it, and choose to Repair Disk successfully, its working. If it gives you trouble to READ it, try a better enclosure/connection type like those from OWC or Mac knowledgeable sellers.

I made some back ups last year on destop using DVD RAM discs. Now back on my T61p, the discs are not read. I tried a new DVD-RAM disc and find no way to have the drive recognize them.
Is this normal or is it possible that my drive is toast?

tpfancontrol installed on all systemsHello,
In this Lenovo support article, it states some types of UDF-formatted discs require that additional Drive Letter Access software be installed when running older versions of Microsoft Windows. Could you tell us more about which version of Microsoft Windows was on the ThinkPad T61p when the DVD-RAM discs were created, what tool(s) were used to back up the files, and which version of Microsoft Windows is now installed on the T61p?
Also, were the discs readable at some point by the T61p, but ceased to be accessible?
Knowing the answer to these will be helpful in determining how to further troubleshoot the issue.

Why won't my internal MATSHITA DVD-RAM LF-D211A mount a blank disc or burn one?
Why won't my Dual Processor 500 MHz PowerPC G4, with 2 GB SDRAM, running Mac OS X ver. 10.4.11, equipped with an internally mounted MATSHITA DVD-RAM LF-D211A Drive mount or burn a blank CD, DVD-R, or DVD-Ram disc?

What is wrong?
Can it be corrected?
If so, how can I correct it?I had that machine (PowerMac G4, DP500, Gigabit Ethernet). Expensive and bleeding edge at the time, but the optical drive proved to be of very limited utility. The DVD-RAM will burn only Type 1 and Type 2 DVD-RAM discs. It should also mount and give read-access to Type 1 and Type 2 DVD-RAM, DVD-ROM (including DVD-Video), DVD-R that you've burned on another machine, and CD discs. Here's a long-ago archived info sheet on DVD-RAM technology: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3072.
When prices for optical drives came down, I replaced the DVD-RAM drive with a more conventional CD/DVD burner. -
I'm using OS 10.4.11. I have some old DVD-RAM discs with old files on them that I would like to open on my G4 iBook laptop. I also purchased an external DVD-RAM drive that plugs into the USB port on my laptop. It used to read old discs just fine about a year ago, but now when I try I get a message that says the disc I have inserted is "unreadable." Also, I no longer get the icon of the external disc drive that used to appear on my desktop.
I suspect that I've upgraded my system software to the point that this old DVD-RAM stuff no longer works. Does anyone know a way I can access these old discs on my present system?
Thanks for any ideas.

Importing DVD-RAM vs. DVD-R into imovie'08
Hi,
I have an older Panasonic model VDR-M50PP which records unto both DVD-RAM and DVD-R discs. Over the years, I have made recordings in both types of discs... I know one of these is incompatible with iMovie but I am confused as to which. Can someone explain? I'm anxious to get my home movies into iMovie, but I guess I picked the wrong camcorder all those years ago. But if I can get either my DVD-RAM discs or my DVR-R discs to transfer, then at least I'll have something to work with. This camcorder has an USB cable and a Windows disc driver. Thanks!
FioI have an older Panasonic model VDR-M50PP which records unto both DVD-RAM and DVD-R discs. Over the years, I have made recordings in both types of discs... I know one of these is incompatible with iMovie but I am confused as to which. Can someone explain?
Compatibility issues can most simply be divided into two categories: either the content is recognized for what it is or it is not. In the first case, iMovie '08 will open/switch to the "Import from Camera..." mode and import/convert the content to an iMovie '08 edit compatible compression format. In the second, the content is recognized as a file and is handled by the "Import Movies..." module which does not perform any automatic conversions. The ultimate reason for the failure of a particular media format (hardware incompatibility, media incompatibility, format incompatibility, improper work flow, etc.) is immaterial if all you want to do is get the content into iMovie '08 (or iMovie HD for that matter).
Once you reach this disjunction, there are three possible strategies -- find the reason for the incompatibility and correct it (IF YOU CAN), image the data to your hard drive so that iMovie '08 will recognize the content as being on/from a camcorder, or simply convert the content manually to a compression format acceptable to any specific or all video editors.
1) As incompatibility and work flow issues are usually unique in nature or next to impossible to diagnose without being physically preset to observe the work flow, I won't attempt to address this area here.
2) In the case of HDD or DVD content, the data files/folders can be placed in an image file. When opened, the image content will appears as a separate volume as if a camcorder had been plugged into you computer. I don't use this option wery ofent but when I have used it, an ISO image file seemed to work for me most often.
3) In most cases, I would personally recommend the manual conversion of your content which I assume to be MPEG-2 video multiplexed with AC3 audio in an MPEG, VOB, VRO, or similar file container. As such compression is not natively compatible with the QT structure nor editable by the QT engine, a third-party MPEG-based conversion application is required. I usually use MPEG Streamclip here since it is a free but full featured converter application which complements the capabilities of QT Pr which I also use for other tasks. Unfortunately, MPEG Streamclip is designed to rely on your complement of installed QT components and, thus, requires the Apple QT MPEG-2 Playback component ($20) be installed. I prefer this combination as it allows me to convert directly to any of the iMovie '08 native editing compression formats -- DV, AIC, Motion-JPEG, Photo-JPEG, and compatible MPEG-4 and H.264 profiles along with their commonly associated audio compression formats. Depending on the files types involved, iSquint (free)/Visual Hub (pay-ware) applications will also work if you already have one or the other but are no longer supported by their developer. FFmpegX (donation-ware) and MPEG2 Works (pay-ware) should also work. (With the exception of MPEG2 Works, these applications do not require the QT MPEG-2 Playback component.) -
I recently installed Final Cut Express 4 on my Macbook and I am using a Panasonic AVCHD camera to transfer footage. When I used a DVD-RAM disc the data appeared in the Log and Transfer window with no problems, however I have footage on a DVD-RW disc which I want to transfer. (Despite being RW it won't let me delete footage through my camera) My DVD-RW disc has been finalized and when I plug in my camera it shows the loading color wheel, but no film clips appear in the log and transfer. I look in the actual disc window and all the files for my clips are there, but it doesnt recognize them in log and transfer. Is there some reason that Final Cut Express 4 will only notice DVD-RAM discs?
I have the disc in the video camera (I dont think a Macbook CD drive can use those mini-dvd discs) and the DVD is finalized. (which i believe allows it to be played back on other devices) Panasonic just says the camera can record on DVD-RW, DVD-RAM, and DVD-R discs. It didnt have much to say in terms of other media it can be used with. And Final Cut just says it supports AVCHD but I havent found anything about differences in the type of disc you can use.
