DVD stuck in G5 imac - Keeps re-reading

Just put in a freebie DVD from a paper. I noticed it had four raised bumps around the centre of the hole... Couldn't remember seeing that on anything before but stuck it in ignoring my doubts.
Have tried ejecting it and my mac tries... but then it seems to change it's mind and quickly moves the plate back into position and begins to re-read it.
I have tried the following from other posts I've read:
*Lying the monitor on its side and pressing eject
*Restarting the Mac and holding down the mouse.
*Taping back the fabric - in an attempt to whisk out the DVD with an impliment with sticky tape attached (happens far too quickly)
Would like to try the 'OPEN FIRMWARE' that I see regularly mentioned, but have no idea how to get onto it before typing in everything.
Any suggestions or instructions to accomplish this or a new idea would be very, VERY much appreciated : )

Try this:
Switch on
After the startup chime, press and hold the keys <command/apple> <alt/option> <o> and <f> ( ⌥ ⌘ F O )
At the command line prompt, type: eject cd
Hit Return, the optical drive will then open.
Remove the disc.
Type: mac-boot
Hit return.
Hope that works.

*I have a DVD stuck in my iMac, can't see it on the desk top! Can I manually eject it, if so how?*
    Help?

    Hi Minchroadster
Open Disk Utility and select the DVD's image in the left column, then go up and hit the blue eject button. If for some unknown reason the DVD's image is not shown in Disk Utility, restart your Mac holding the mouse button to eject the DVD.

  • Dvd stucked in my iMac

I put a normal-sized dvd into my iMac and when i wanted to eject it, it was almost out then it was sucked back in. how can I bring the dvd out?

    check out Kappy's user tip:
Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the left mouse button until the disc ejects.
    2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
    3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
    4. Press COMMAND-E.
    5. If none of the above work try this:
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following: /usr/bin/drutil eject.
If this fails then try this:
Boot the computer into single-user mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above.
To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

  • Why does dvd on my new iMac keep giving me the notice, DVD player closed unexpectedly whenever I try to open it or load a dvd?

I have had my imac a couple of days and when i went to play a dvd for my OU course I could hear the disc spinning then it stopped and told me "DVD player stopped unexpectedly"
Its my first Apple product other than my iPad 3 so I'm a little bit lost at how to fix it -.-

    You coud try this reset
    SMC RESET
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    Wait 15 seconds.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.
It is the 5 second timing that initiates the reset.
Sometimes it helps, also make sure the DVD is impeccably clean.

  • Got a home dvd stuck in my imac

i can not get this dvd out i try to click eject i try command and E at the same time but it will not come out please help thanks

This is a little harder not knowing which of the four generations of iMac you own. What does "About this Mac" from your Apple menu say about your processor. There are differenct types of optical drives in each generation.
Does the disk show on the desktop? If so, either drag its icon to the trash or right-click the disk's icon and select "Eject" fromt eh resulting contextual menu at the cursor.
If there is no icon on the desktop, restart the computer and hold the mouse button down during the restart.

  • DVD stuck. Can I turn it off?

I've had a DVD stuck in the imac for a few weeks now. I've got too many projects running to take it in to get fixed. Today the DVD is making a horrible noise trying to eject and I can't get it to stop. Instead of throwing it through a window is there a way I can turn off the DVD/CD drive to get it to stop from trying to eject?
    Thank you!

Running a mid 2009 iMac on 10.7.5, 3 gb memory, 320 gb hd.
Suddenly the computer stoped reading DVDs and the only time I can read a CD is if I restart.  Quite often when I insert a CD it gets stuck and I cannot get it out until I restart and it shows up on the desktop where I can then eject it.
I have checked and double checked the finder prefs and all looks normal showing a check mark on CDs,DVDs etc. (the ones I want to show up on the desktop)
I have reset the PEAM, repaired permissions with both the disk utility on the computer and the disk utility when I start up in the Recovery Disk.  I did notice that sometimes the permission repeat the same correction several times before it moves on, and sometimes it doesn’t. I have Windows installed on a partition but I keep it unmounted until it is needed for my wife’s work.  The dock seems to be just fine and all the apps seems to run just fine.  When I insert a photo CD iPhoto does not open but when I insert a music CD iTunes does open.
Also, most every time I open iPhoto it takes a long time(sometimes as long as 2 minutes) for it to load.
Sometimes my Mail (Mail 5.3) does not post new mail but most of the time it does.
Once and a while it seems like the computer slows way down but then it seems ok ten minutes later.
All  of these ‘things’ seemed to have happen suddenly and I have not downloaded anything from the internet in some time.
Of course the warranty and extended warranty are both no longer in effect having had this computer for more than three years.
I am running Java and Adobe Player because some of the sites I go to a lot require both.

I believe that insufficient RAM may be the source of some of your problems. If you have a RAM of somewhere 4 to 8GB, you will experience smoother computing. 3GB doesn't seem right, so you might want to learn more by going to this site:
    http://www.crucial.com/store/drammemory.aspx
I don't know what know what's happening with your optical drive, but it seems you use your drive quite a bit. In that case, look into a lens cleaner for your machine. It's inexpensive, works quite well.
I hope you'll post here with your results!

  • There is a DVD stuck in my drive on my iMac, the computer doesn't recognize it's there, how do it get it out?

There is a DVD stuck in my drive on my iMac, the computer doesn't recognize it. How do I get it out?  I was trying to burn some photos onto it. Some error camer up, and then I coudn't get it out.

Hello, try holding the Mouse button down while booting up.

  • My iMac keeps telling me that a DVD that clearly has content on it, is blank.

Hello:  My iMac keeps telling me that a DVD that clearly has content on it, is blank.  I thought, at first, that maybe the disc was blank.  But then I inserted a DVD movie that I created using iMovie and it told me the same thing.  No matter what DVD I inserted, I got the same response..Does this mean that the Optical Drive is dead?  Do I need to purchase a "Super Drive"?  Any and all assistance is greatly appreciated...Thanks

There are two schools of thought on external optical drives.
You can go with cheap drives (anything under $50) and know going in that you may have to replace the drive in a year or two if you use the drive regularity.
The other thought is to purchase more expensive drives that will last longer than two or three years that are faster and are bulit to be more durable and rugged.
    I am in this camp.
Here is one I would recommend.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/MRF82SD24S/
This one has no burning software included. If you have burning software already, this shouldn't be an issue.
Here's the one I use, but the used price for this is too high, IMO
I only paid $179 for this new, locally.

IF you want to add additonal Blu-ray Capabilites, there are many other drives listed here in different price ranges.

I prefer the OWC Mercury Pro line of drives,  prefer tray loading drives that have multiple connections (in case one connection scheme goes bad) and drives that have their own power supplies and do not rely on bus power from the computer, itself. These drives come in a very durable and rugged enclosure.

  • G5 iMac won't read 10.5 install DVD

Hello good people! Here's my problem:
When I instert my OS 10.5 (Leopard) install DVD into my G5 iMac, the computer will not read the disk. I can hear it spinning the disk and it makes a few strange grind-like noises, but I never get an icon on the desktop and it eventually (after about a minute) just spits the disk back out. This is a 20" 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5 iMac (no camera) w/ a Super Drive and 2GB of RAM, currently running 10.4.11.
    A few things to know:
    • I know the 10.5 install disk is good because it worked fine on a G4 iBook.
    • I know the Super Drive will read from and record to other CDs and DVDs.
    • I tried duplicating the 10.5 install DVD onto another DVD and got the same result: can't read the copy either.
    • I looked into updating the Super Drive's firmware and the updater told me I did not need to update it.
So it seems that this drive is just not happy with this disk or a copy of this disk for some reason. If anyone knows why, I would be grateful for an explanation, but what I am more interested in knowing is this:
IS IT POSSIBLE to run this installation either from a disk image that I put onto the iMac's desktop; OR by inserting the physical disk into the drive on my iBook (which as I said previously WILL read the disk without a problem) and then running the install from the iBook's drive onto the iMac, either over a network or by connecting the two machines directly via some sort of cable? (The iBook is running 10.5 and the iMac is at 10.4.11). If this is possible, please explain how to do it! Desperate!
Thanks in advance for everyone's help and expertise.

When I follow the 6-step procedure described here, I get a screen at startup from the iMac where I can select either the iMac's hard drive or the iBook's hard drive to startup from, but I do not see the install DVD as an option.
I also tried starting the iBook in Target disk mode (by holding down T @ startup) and then connecting it to the already-running iMac (which I started and logged into without holding down option). When I do this, I get icons on the desktop for the iBook's hard drive and for the install DVD in the iBook's optical drive (yes!). Unfortunately, the install DVD shows up as a "volume" (i.e. a drive with a white rectangular icon) and NOT as an actual DVD with a round DVD icon. When I try to launch the installer from the DVD, I get a box with a message telling me that I can't use the installer from this "volume" and that I need to run it from the actual DVD (even though it IS an actual DVD). Frustrating!

  • My 24" imac will not read cd's, reads dvd's fine

My 24" imac will not read cd's, reads dvd's just fine.

    1) Make sure the CDs are clean and free from scratches.
    2) Go to: Apple > System Preferences > CDs & DVDs and make sure that blank CD: is set to Ask what to do and that music CD: is set to Open iTunes.

hey guys, so I have a DVD stuck in the CD drive on my mac. It reads it as being in there, but I cannot eject it and it is causing my a lot of issues with my mac. If i try to eject it, Finder acts up and I have issues saving projects or even browsing files. I feel like it interferes with iPhoto as well because it says it is locked and I have no rights to view it. I wanted to see if anyone else had/s this issue and how you fixed it before lugging it into the apple store and being without a computer for a few weeks...
