[DWMX] Error terrible!!!

maquina.

I am having a terrible time trying to convert my QT file to an AVI file so I can use in PowerPoint.  I am getting Error 43 File not Found, any suggestions?

    Hi Jenna,
The error your getting suggests a file path problem.
How are you embedding the movie in PP and where is the movie file located relative to the PP file? Are you getting this error within PP when the slide containing the embedded video is displayed?
If you embed a movie and then move it or change its name then PP will generate this error.

  • Terrible color errors in FrameMaker 5.5.3

    Hi,
I'm going nuts with a problem in FrameMaker 5.5.3 (same in 5.5.6).
I've been working for seven years on a book that the publisher
    suddenly wants in full color.
I have some grip on the problems in RGB--when I print from Phootshop CS2
to an Epson R3800, the colors are reasonable (not great, I'm still
    getting calibrated).
When I convert RGB images to CMYK in Photoshop, they get very, very
dark. If I throw a very strong curve on them, I can get them to look
reasonable on screen and print OK. However, when I link in the TIFF
to FrameMaker, the color is incredibly bad--the worst I've ever seen.
They go extremely dark and cyan. Color management is working, sort of--
what comes out of the printer is just as bad as what's on screen.
I've tried printing through ColorBurst as well as directly through
the printer driver. The results are a bit different but just as
bad. I'm sure I've made some idiot mistake somewhere, but a week
of looking has not suggested what I might have done wrong.
Thanks for any suggestions you may have.
    Joel

    Thanks Gernot,
    You said:
    >IMO one has to check, whether the CMYK numbers
    >in the PDF are the same as in the source images.
I made a very simple test. I took a test image that
looks fine in Photoshop as RGB. I linked that image
into FrameMaker. Then I make a copy of the image
and converted it to CMTK. Finally, I linked the
CMYK version into FrameMaker. I then printed all
    four versions. Results:
The first three prints are nearly indistinguishable
and look just fine. The display of the RGB image in
FrameMaker may be slightly different from the Photoshop
display, but the differences are small enough that they
    would not bother me.
The fourth image, CMYK in FrameMaker, has gone extremely
cyan and very dark. The gray scale is now heavily cyan
and goes to black much too quickly. The on-screen display
is a fairly close match of the printed output--both are
    about equally horrible.
I think that these simple tests alone are sufficient to
conclude that FrameMaker 5.5.6, at least the way I have it
set up, does not even come close to passing CMYK values
    through to any output device.
As a final test, I printed both pages from FrameMaker to
the ColorBurst RIP. I printed from ColorBurst and distilled
to PDF. Everything matches--the RGB images are fine
both in PDF and on paper, and the CMYK images are the
same awful dark, cyan as the other CMYK output from
    FrameMaker
I should not spend further time on this until I have
figured out why FrameMaker is making such a terrible
mess out of CMYK images. Yes, I could go ahead and
take the advice to work in RGB in FrameMaker, and this
would probably work, but I'm fearful to do this because
of unexpected results when the file is ripped. I could
make a press proof and intend to do that in any case,
but I would like to be confident that what I am sending
    for proof will work.
    >This advice is based on the assumption that FM
    >is able to link without embedding&converting.
FrameMaker will certainly link either RGB or CMYK images
into the document (this is actually the only way I have
    ever used it--I never embed).
    >Printing such a PDF by an inkjet can be called Proof
    >Printing if the printer is calibrated and the driver
    >knows the source space (ISOCoated) and the output profile.
    >If the PDF contains (additionally) RGB images and
    >Grayscales, then we have already too many degrees of
    >freedom - the proofing is not safe, unless the RIP accepts
    >parameters for all kind of input files, eventually
    >different for raster and vector (I'm using such a RIP).
Which RIP, by the way? I still have to buy one.
    >Another issue is the rendering intent:
    >a) from RGB to CMYK: RelCol with BPC. This is the final
intent for offset printing (feel free to use Perceptual,
    which contains inplicitly BPC).
    >b) additionally for the inkjet proof: RelCol with BPC
or AbsCol. It depends much on the paper color whether
AbsCol is reasonable. This should be clarified by
tests in advance to the final task.
Right; I'll get to these refinements once I have the
    basic problem solved.
Thanks very much for taking the time and energy to
    consider this and reply.
    Best,
    Joel

  • Google earth error: no video IRQ, terrible framerates

do_wait: drmWaitVBlank returned -1, IRQs don't seem to be working correctly.
Try running with LIBGL_THROTTLE_REFRESH and LIBL_SYNC_REFRESH unset.
glxgears seems fine.  video is i810 and xorg7.1.

Same problem. Until today's upgrade (libgl-dri, mesa), gl didn't work well. Today, the framerates are up to normal (which for me means c. 1000), and Google Earth works correctly again, but the error message is still there. I could ignore it, of course...

  • Performance loading websites is terrible & occasional "connection reset" errors after upgrade

Firefox is very slow (minutes, really) to load web pages to the point where I have time to go open another browser (generally chrome) and cut/paste the url to see whether it is a network problem or not. So far Chrome has been able to load the pages very quickly while Firefox takes several minutes. Additionally I will get occasional "Connection Reset" errors. I was suspicious of browser add-ons, anti-malware software etc on my system so I've unstalled everything (except Sophos) and the bits which come with Windows7 (64bit). I uninstalled Firefox, deleting all user settings, browser history, etc and reinstalled a fresh copy. This didn't affect the problem.
I have gone through the hints in the performace faq, set the proxy setting to no proxy, turned off ipv6 dns and dns prefetching and the problems exist. I'm happy to try and help track this down but I don't really know where to start. '''bold text'''

I have the same problem, but only with firefox, because is the only program that i use (also watch videos with VLC, but this have no problem).
I think we should report, but i'm not sure where.

  • Muse error in starting

    Well here it goes again.
Muse wont start because when I login it says "
An unexpected error occurred processing your request. Please try again later.
    I-200"
I have been up since 5:30 am trying to get some work done on a Saturday.
So I didn't have CC desktop running so I figured that was the problem. CC desktop would not run so I deleted the opm.db file which allowed CC desktop to work ... this is a common occurrence. I also have to constantly change my internet connection setting by turning off "auto detect script" under LAN settings.
Still I get the same error when trying to start Muse, but Photoshop starts fine.
This whole login in nightmare with CC is terrible, I wish I just got CS6 and stuck with that for the time I've lost.

Moving this discussion to the Help with Using Adobe Muse forum.
Mueller-Design you may want to see An unexpected error occurred I-200.  The community in the Help with Using Adobe Muse though may have additional suggestions.

  • Photoshop CS 'Program error' but works in different account

My version of Photoshop CS suddenly stopped working. It said 'program error' when I try to load any files. Then, after quitting, it failed to reload each time.
I have tried reinstalling, then uninstalling fully (through Adobe's uninstall procedure). Also, deleting the preferences and font caches but still no luck. So I downloaded the try out version of CS2 and it installed fine. But it now says exactly the same thing '
I created a new account on the computer and tried it from there - and it worked! So I then copied my preferences to that account and it still worked, so I guess it isn't the preferences.
It seems there is something wrong with my main account but not sure where to look. Is it easy to transfer all setting and all files to the new account?
    Thanks
    Alan

I had a lot of grief with this exact problem. I fixed it by deleting my printers in mac OSX preferences. I have not re-added them yet, but since removing the printers I have not had the problem occur since - and this is after an erase and install, an archive and install, upgrading to CSII and calls to Adobe phone support were of no help. Everything else in the CS suite worked, except photshop. Photoshop would work if I created a new user account, but this work-around was not acceptable to me. In desperation, with deadlines looming, I was about to do another erase and fresh install when I found this:
Solution 6: Re-create your printers in Mac OS X.
To re-create your printers, first delete them and then add them again.
    To delete your printers:
    1. Open System Preferences from the Apple menu.
    2. Select Print & Fax, and click Printing.
    3. Select each printer in the list and click the delete key (the minus key).
For instructions on how to add your printers again, see "Setting up to print to a printer" in Mac Help or search Help using the phrase "add a printer."
    http://www.adobe.com/support/techdocs/331627.html
That fixed the problem for me and I really hope that helps someone else. This was a terrible and frustrating problem for me, not only am I a design student but I also earn a living using the Adobe software and my mac, and Photoshop is one of my primary tools.

I have following problem with my Lenovo SL500 laptop. I have installed new xorg-server 1.5, mesa 7.2, libgl 7.2 and intel driver 2.4 with libdrm 2.3.1 and intel-dri 7.2 (from testing repository) and generated xorg config. I'm puzzled because at www.phoronix.com they eneded up with good results with my video card (that is of course Intel x4500 as in topic )
I would be grateful if someone gave me a tip how to improve performance of my graphics card.
    Here is my xorg.conf

    Apparently yes,
    According to the thread:
To restore to the old behaviour, put this in your ~/.drirc:
    <driconf>
      <device screen="0" driver="i915">
        <application name="Default">
          <option name="vblank_mode" value="0" />
        </application>
      </device>
    </driconf>
But I don't come back to the same perfs as before (tested with eternal lands).
I noticed that in my /var/log/Xorg.0.log:
    (WW) intel(0): Register 0x61200 (PP_STATUS) changed from 0xc0000008 to 0xd0000009
(WW) intel(0): PP_STATUS before: on, ready, sequencing idle
(WW) intel(0): PP_STATUS after: on, ready, sequencing on
(WW) intel(0): Register 0x71024 (PIPEBSTAT) changed from 0x00020202 to 0x00020000
    (WW) intel(0): PIPEBSTAT before: status: VBLANK_INT_ENABLE VSYNC_INT_STATUS VBLANK_INT_STATUS
(WW) intel(0): PIPEBSTAT after: status: VBLANK_INT_ENABLE
There seem to be some problem with mtrr
I found this problem which seems related but I only have 2GB of memory

  • Msi terrible standard of customer care

please read my comunications with msi online help, after constantly being directed to sites to get contact details where both sites give the same telephone number to ring, which only redirects you back to the website you got their number from! i feel like neo in the matrix!! where he runs from the train station and ends up where he started!!!
    Your Question
msi k7n2 delta motherboard packed up
ive had this motherboard for almost 9 months, and now it is displaying errors.
error 1: on athlon xp3000 incorrectly reads as not installed
    properly or damaged processor.
error 2: on a 2.5 athlon xp it reads correctly but incorrectly
states memory is damaged or non working.
i have followed the instructions in the manual to clear/reset the cmos but to no avail, i have also tried removing the lithium battery and leaving the cmos in the clear position for 24 hours before replacing the battery and replacing the cmos jumper but to no avail.
i have tested both the procesors and the memory (2 x 512mhz matched pair of crucial pc3200) on my other system motherboard and these all are all fine.
i cant reflash the bios as it isnt a removeable bios and it will not even boot enough to access bios or even to turn on my monitor let alone access the floppy drive.
summary of problem: wont boot to bios
    incorrectly reports errors on processors
    incorrectly reports errors on memory
    cant reset the cmos setting
    cant reflash the bios
the cpu fan doesnt power up
its been ok for nigh on 9 months
everything works fine on different motherboard
i have read the manual cover to cover and no joy.
please help as this is less than a year old and the shop where i purchased it from has been closed down for over 5 months and the owner is beleived to have emmigrated to taiwan.
i still have the full original packing and the board is clean and non dusty.

    Our Answer
     Dear Customer,
Please register in website of MSI-UK :
    www.msicomputer.co.uk/support.aspx
    Thank you.
    Best regards,
    MSI RMA
    Your Question.
i have tried the numbers given and they all tell you to go to the website, the 2 different sites give the same number!!!
i have tried to return the board to place of purchase but it isnt there anymore!!!!
this is terrible customer service, i shall be posting all my questions and your replys (yourself and the other questions i have been asking on your site as i have txt copys) on the forums so people can see that if you get problems on msi products, they just give you the run around!
the telephone numbers given go to an automated helpline that just gives websites!! that i have been on already and gave me that number!!!!
    am i in the matrix???
wheres customer service???  :wall:a human response is required not an automated response
THERE IS OBVIOUSLY MORE CONTACTS MADE BUT ONLY NOW AFTER 2 WEEKS OF BEING FOBBED OFF AM I POSTING THEIR RESPONSE OR LACK OF IT!!
I WILL BE GOING TO OTHER FORUMS AND POSTING DETAILS OF THIS AS MSI IS A HUGE CORPORATION AND DOES NOT LIKE DEALING WITH PEOPLE ON A 1 TO 1 BASIS!!
IF I WAS A HUGE COMPUTER SHOP SELLING HUNDREDS OF THEIR PRODUCTS THEY WOULD HELP ME STRAIGHT AWAY!!
WELL THEY SCREWING ME SO I AM BOYCOTTING ALL MSI PRODUCTS AND HAVE ALREADY GOT A FEW FREINDS WHO ARE WILLING TO STAND OUTSIDE THE VARIOUS COMPUTER SHOPS/STORES  IN MY HOME AREA AND WILL BE PERSUADING PEOPLE TO NOT BUY MSI PRODUCTS!
    CUSTOMER CARE? WHAT A JOKE!!

    hi richard thx
    msi k7n2 delta processor

    1 x sata 200gig hd

    more than adequate cooling
    basicallig the system ran fine,
    then it stopped working
the d-bracket shows different errors which are as follows:
    1) it says the 3000 processor is damaged or incorrectly fitted  ( its fine on other board )
    2) it says memory is damaged or incorrectly fitted ( also fine on other board )
    3) i have tried resetting the cmos settings ( tried jumping the jumper and disconnecting the battery for 24 hours)
4)cant get to boot at all not even to turn on monitor so i cant flash the bios with floppy disk

  • Terrible Battery Life - New MacBook Pro

OK, 4 weeks into my New MacBook Pro. MacBook Pro 15", 8GB Ram, 512GB SSD (Lion O/S as shipped). I know there are other threads but here's the full summary from my perspective.
Prior machine was MacBook Pro 17", 4GB Ram and 256 GB Hard Drive (Upgraded to Lion O/S). This older machine and the battery is 30 months old. It's awesome but I really needed more RAM and better battery life. Stumped over over $4000 for it.
I migrated virtually everything (Using Migration Assistant). Machine came up perfectly, works like a charm.
Except, the new machine gets only about an hour more at best than the old machine. The old machine was getting about 2.5 hours to 3 hours. I could get some work done on a plane and watch a 2 hour movie.
However, the new machine will only get me about 3 1/2 hours. I only get 2 1/2 hours if I watch a movie.
This is terrible. I have taken to Genius store and they agree the battery is fine and something is wrong but didn't have a fix. They and I since have tried all sorts of things at boot time to clean up errors, disk stuff, aplplied updates and all that. Basically, everything suggested in every forum. Some of these things actually have an effect on the "Time available" on the status bar, showing 7-8 hours for a while leading me into a false sense of security that a "fix" has worked. However, then after an hour or so of of use or booting from sleep, it's really averaging just 3 1/2 hours in real life, and sometimes just 3 hours.
I had a spare bettery for my old MacBook so could get 6-7 hours on a long haul flight. Now, I am dead at 3 hours in.
SInce Genius bar have confirmed machine is fine, and others have reported similar findings when going to Lion *AND* I have exactly the same apps on both machines... what the heck can it be?
Does anyone want to guess? Does someone from Apple want to "see" my machine in use?
HELP HELP HELP. PLEASE. This $4k machine is leaving me with a very sour taste.

Suppose you elaborate on what you are doing with the MBP that makes the battery life terrible.

  • Problem: An error occured during the uploading process.

Hello!  I've searched around but I am having difficulty finding a solution to this problem.
I am trying to upload videos through Adobe Premiere Elements 9 to YouTube, using the preset options in the share tab.  This worked previously without issue, but then one day I continually ran into an error stating "Sorry, an error occured during the uploading process.  Please try again later."  However, it eventually started working.  It is now a few weeks later, and I am having the very same issue.  I am unable to upload to YouTube or any other service through the Share tab.  Even loading the software itself, the opening splash screen is unable to grab my Adobe ID.  It never stops "Gathering User Info..."
    Steps I have tried:
Going to Edit -> Preferences -> Web Sharing and hitting the refresh button to update settings.
    Checked router settings.
Enabled DMZ on router and linked it to this specific computer.
Rebooted PC and router, and tried updating the Web Sharing settings multiple times.
I honestly do not believe it to be a router issue, especially since it is currently in DMZ mode and I have had absolutely no trouble with any other software.  This has continued to baffle me though, and finding help is difficult.  Searches keep giving me encoding settings for YouTube videos, and few results pertain to this particular issue.
I am aware I could export the video normally and upload through YouTube that way, but on DSL, my upload speed is pretty terrible for a high quality video.  The YouTube HD setting has been great for me in the past, as files are small but still look great online.  I would really like to get it working again, both for ease and convenience for simple projects.
If anyone has any ideas as to what could be causing a problem, I would be greatly appreciative of any advice.  In regards to the project itself, there is no real editing being done at this point, as I am trying to eliminate any possibility of error elsewhere. I opened a new project, added a video clip and went directly to upload it, resulting in the error above.
I don't believe it matters in this situation, but just in case:
    Windows 7
    AMD Phenom II X4 820 - 2.80 GHz
    6 GB RAM
    Radeon HD 5880 1GB
Connecting through a Netgear WNDR3400 router, standard DSL connection.

Sorry, not seeing where to edit my original post.
Just wanted to add, that I am able to visit both the Photoshop.com website, as well as YouTube through my browser.  So I am not being blocked somehow to those particular sites.  It only seems to be through the software that I cannot connect to any of the online services to upload videos to.
Additionally, the only virus software running is Microsoft Security Essentials.  It has never raised a flag before with this software or caused interference in the past.  I do not use Norton or any other service which are known to interfere with programs often.
Just a quick example as well, pinging Photoshop.com through the command prompt shows I am getting through just fine.  As you can see in this image though, it cannot seem to ever connect and grab my user information.

  • Firefox no longer allows me to enter *any* websites without giving me a security error.

I have the latest version of firefox: 35.0. i am running windows 7 pro. Since this morning, firefox is not allowing me to enter any sites at all. not even my trusted bank site. all the other browsers do. it is giving me a problem with ALL the security certificates. in some cases i can get through by forcing it (not choosing 'get me out of here' but the other one) and in some cases the browser won't even let me do that (giving me a 'more information button and no way to get to the site). if i am allowed to get to the site, it is messed up and the graphics are either missing or crunched up on one side.
this is terrible. i don't want to use the IE (another nightmare), or safari (Hate apple). i use chrome at the moment but i always have two different browsers open in case the work i am doing on the other crashes it won't crash the current thing i am working on. i have tried everything listed in the help forums as of this morning and find this situation deplorable, to say the list.
is there a patch for this mess or do i have to just forget about firefox forever?

    One of these may help you;

  • EFS Encrypted Files over home workgroup network via WebDAV avoiding Active Directory fixing Access Denied errors

This is for information to help others
    KEYWORDS:
      - Sharing EFS encrypted files over a personal lan wlan wifi ap network
      - Access denied on create new file / new fold on encrypted EFS network file share remote mapped folder
      - transfer encryption keys / certificates
      - set trusted delegation for user + computer for EFS encrypted files via
    Kerberos
      - Windows Active Directory vs network file share
      - Setting up WinDAV server on Windows 7 Pro / Ultimate
It has been a long painful road to discover this information.
I hope sharing it helps you.
Using EFS on Windows 7 pro / ultimate is easy and works great. See
    here and
    here
So too is opening + editing encrypted files over a peer-to-peer Windows 7 network.
HOWEVER, creating a new file / new folder over a peer-to-peer Windows 7 network
won't work (unless you follow below steps).
Typically, it is only discovered as an issue when a home user wants to use synchronisation software between their home computers which happens to have a few folders encrypted using windows EFS. I had this issue trying to use GoodSync.
Typically an "Access Denied" error messages is thrown when a \\clientpc tries to create new folder / new file in an encrypted folder on a remote file share \\fileserver.
Why such a EFS drama when a network is involved?
    Assume a home peer-to-peer network with 2pc:  \\fileserver  and  \\clientpc
When a \\clientpc tries to create a new file or new folder on a \\fileserver (remote computer) it fails. In a terribly simplified explanation it is because the process on \\fileserver that is answering the network requests is a process working for a user on
another machine (\\clientpc) and that \\fileserver process doesn't have access to an encryption certificate (as it isn't a user). Active Directory gets around this by using kerberos so the process can impersonate a \\fileserver user and then use their certificate
(on behalf of the clienpc's data request).
This behaviour is confusing, as a \\clientpc can open or edit an existing efs encrypted file or folder, just can't create a new file or folder. The reason editing + opening an encrypted file over a network file share is possible is because the encrypted
file / folder already has an encryption certificate, so it is clear which certificate is required to open/edit the file. Creating a new file/folder requires a certificate to be assigned and a process doesn't have a profile or certificates assigned.
    Solutions
There are two main approaches to solve this:
         1) SOLVE by setting up an Active Directory (efs files accessed through file shares)
EFS operations occur on the computer storing the files.
EFS files are decrypted then transmitted in plaintext to the client's computer
This makes use of kerberos to impersonate a local user (and use their certificate for encrypt + decrypt)
         2) SOLVE by setting up WebDAV (efs files accessed through web folders)
EFS operations occur on the client's local computer
EFS files remain encrypted during transmission to the client's local computer where it is decrypted
This avoids active directory domains, roaming or remote user profiles and having to be trusted for delegation.
BUT it is a pain to set up, and most online WebDAV server setup sources are not for home peer-to-peer networks or contain details on how to setup WebDAV for EFS file provision
             READ BELOW as this does
Create new encrypted file / folder on a network file share - via Active Directory
It is easily possible to sort this out on a domain based (corporate) active directory network. It is well documented. See
here. However, the problem is on a normal Windows 7 install (ie home peer-to-peer) to set up the server as part of an active directory domain is complicated, it is time consuming it is bulky, adds burden to operation of \\fileserver computer
and adds network complexity, and is generally a pain for a home user. Don't. Use a WebDAV.
Although this info is NOT for setting up EFS on an active directory domain [server],
for those interested here is the gist:
Use the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in to configure delegation options for both users and computers. To trust a computer for delegation, open the computer’s Properties sheet and select Trusted for delegation. To allow a user
account to be delegated, open the user’s Properties sheet. On the Account tab, under Account Options, clear the The account is sensitive and cannot be delegated check box. Do not select The account is trusted for delegation. This property is not used with
    EFS.
NB: decrypted data is transmitted over the network in plaintext so reduce risk by enabling IP Security to use Encapsulating Security Payload (ESP)—which will encrypt transmitted data,
Create new encrypted file / folder on a network file share - via WebDAV
For home users it is possible to make it all work.
Even better, the functionality is built into windows (pro + ultimate) so you don't need any external software and it doesn't cost anything. However, there are a few hotfixes you have to apply to make it work (see below).
Setting up a wifi AP (for those less technical):
       a) START ... CMD
       b) type (no quotes): "netsh  wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=MyPersonalWifi key=12345 keyUsage=persistent"
       c) type (no quotes): "netsh  wlan start hostednetwork"
Set up a WebDAV server on Windows 7 Pro / Ultimate
    -----ON THE FILESERVER------
1  click START and type "Turn Windows Features On or Off" and open the link
           a) scroll down to "Internet Information Services" and expand it.
           b) put a tick in: "Web Management Tools" \ "IIS Management Console"
           c) put a tick in: "World Wide Web Services" \ "Common HTTP Features" \ "WebDAV Publishing"
           d) put a tick in: "World Wide Web Services" \ "Security" \ "Basic Authentication"
           e) put a tick in: "World Wide Web Services" \ "Security" \ "Windows Authentication"
           f) click ok
           g) run HOTFIX - ONLY if NOT running Windows 7 / windows 8
KB892211 here ONLY for XP + Server 2003 (made in 2005)
KB907306 here ONLY for Vista, XP, Server 2008, Server 2003 (made in 2007)
2 Click START and type "Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager"
3 in IIS, on the left under "connections" click your computer, then click "WebDAV Authoring Rules", then click "Open Feature"
           a) on the right side, under Actions, click "Enable WebDAV"
4 in IIS, on the left under "connections" click your computer, then click "Authentication", then click "Open Feature"
           a) on the "Anonymous Authentication" and click "Disable"
           b) on the "Windows Authentication" and click "Enable"
NB: Some Win 7 will not connect to a webDAV user using Basic Authentication.
It can be by changing registry key:
               [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\WebClient\Parameters]
               BasicAuthLevel=2
           c) on the "Windows Authentication" click "Advanced Settings"
               set Extended Protection to "Required"
NB: Extended protection enhances the windows authentication with 2 security mechanisms to reduce "man in the middle" attacks
5 in IIS, on the left under "connections" click your computer, then click "Authorization Rules", then click "Open Feature"
           a) on the right side, under Actions, click "Add Allow Rule"
           b) set this to "all users". This will control who can view the "Default Site" through a web browser
NB: It is possible to specify a group (eg Administrators is popular) or a user account. However, if not set to "all users" this will require the specified group/user account to be used for logged in with on the
    clientpc.
NB: Any user account specified here has to exist on the server. It has a bug in that it usernames specified here are not validated on input.
6 in IIS, on the left under "connections" click your computer, then click "Directory Browsing", then click "Open Feature"
           a) on the right side, under Actions, click "Enable"
    HOTFIX - double escaping
7 in IIS, on the left under "connections" click your computer, then click "Request Filtering", then click "Open Feature"
           a) on the right side, under Actions, click "Edit Feature Settings"
           b) tick the box "Allow double escaping"
*THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT* if your filenames or foldernames contain characters like "+" or "&"
These folders will appears blank with no subdirectories, or these files will not be readable unless this is ticked
This is safe btw. Unchecked (default) it filters out requests that might possibly be misinterpreted by buggy code (eg double decode or build url's via string-concat without proper encoding). But any bug would need to be in IIS basic
file serving and this has been rigorously tested by microsoft, so very unlikely. Its safe to "Allow double escaping".
8 in IIS, on the left under "connections" right click "Default Web Site", then click "Add Virtual Directory"
           a) set the Alias to something sensible eg "D_Drive", set the physical path
           b) it is essential you click "connect as" and set
this to a local user (on fileserver),
if left as "pass through authentication" a client won't be able to create a new file or folder in an encrypted efs folder (on fileserver)
NB: the user account selected here must have the required EFS certificates installed.
                            See
    here and
    here
NB: Sharing the root of a drive as an active directory (eg D:\ as "D_Drive") often can't be opened on clientpcs.
This is due to windows setting all drive roots as hidden "administrative shares". Grrr.
The work around is on the \\fileserver create an NTFS symbollic link
e.g. to share the entire contents of "D:\",
on fileserver browse to site path (iis default this to c:\inetpub\wwwroot)
in cmd in this folder create an NTFS symbolic link to "D:\"
so in cmd type "cd c:\inetpub\wwwroot"
then in cmd type "mklink /D D_Drive D:\"
NB: WebDAV will open this using a \\fileserver local user account, so double check local NTFS permissions for the local account (clients will login using)
NB: If clientpc can see files but gets error on opening them, on clientpc click START, type "Manage Network Passwords", delete any "windows credentials" for the fileserver being used, restart
    clientpc
9 in IIS, on the left under "connections" click on "WebDAV Authoring Rules", then click "Open Feature"
           a) click "Add authoring rules". Control access to this folder by selecting "all users" or "specified groups" or "specified users", then control whether they can read/write/source
           b) if some exist review existing allow or deny.
Take care to not only review the "allow access to" settings
               but also review "permissions" (read/write/source)
NB: this can be set here for all added virtual directories, or can be set under each virtual directory
10 Open your firewall software and/or your router. Make an exception for port 80 and 443
           a) In Windows Firewall with Advanced Security click Inbound Rules, click New Rule
choose Port, enter "80, 443" (no speech marks), follow through to completion. Repeat for outbound.
NB: take care over your choice to untick "Public", this can cause issues if no gateway is specified on the network (ie computer-to-computer with no router). See "Other problems+fixes"
below, specifically "Cant find server due to network location"
           b) Repeat firewall exceptions on each client computer you expect to access the webDAV web folders on
    HOTFIX - MAJOR ISSUE - fix KB959439
11 To fully understand this read "WebDAV HOTFIX: RAW DATA TRANSFERS" below
          a) On Windows 7 you need only change one tiny registry value:
               - click START, type "regedit", open link
               -browse to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\MRxDAV\Parameters]
-on the EDIT menu click NEW, then click DWORD Value
-Type "DisableEFSOnWebDav" to name it (no speech marks)
-on the EDIT menu, click MODIFY, type 1, then click OK
-You MUST now restart this computer for the registry change to take effect.
          b) On Windows Server 2008 / Vista / XP you'll FIRST need to
download Windows6.0-KB959439 here. Then do the above step.
NB microsoft will ask for your email. They don't care about licence key legality, it is more to keep you updated if they modify that hotfix
12 To test on local machine (eg \\fileserver) and deliberately bypass the firewall.
            a) make sure WebClient Service is running
(click START, type "services" and open, scroll down to WebClient and check its status)
            b) Open your internet software. Go to address "http://localhost:80" or "http://localhost:80"
It should show the default "IIS7" image.
If not, as firewall and port blocking are bypassed (using localhost) it must be a webDAV server setting. Check "Authorization Rules" are set to "Allow All Users"
            c) for one of the "virtual directories" you added (8), add its "alias" onto "http://localhost/"
                    e.g. http://localhost/D_drive
If nothing is listed, check "Directory Browsing" is enabled
13 To test on local machine or a networked client and deliberately try and access through the firewall or port opening of your router.
            a) make sure WebClient Service is running
(click START, type "services" and open, scroll down to WebClient and check its status)
            b) open your internet software. Go to address "http://<computer>:80" or "http://<computer>:80".
eg if your server's computer name is "fileserver" go to "http://fileserver:80"
It should show the default "IIS7" image. If not, check firewall and port blocking.
Any issue ie if (12) works but (13) doesn't,  will indicate a possible firewall issue or router port blocking issue.
           c) for one of the "virtual directories" you added (8), add its "alias" onto "http://<computername>:80/"
eg if alias is "C_driver" and your server's computer name is "fileserver" go to "http://fileserver:80/C_drive"
A directory listing of files should appear.
    --- ON EACH CLIENT ----
HOTFIX - improve upload + download speeds
14 Click START and type "Internet Options" and open the link
            a) click the "Connections" tab at the top
            b) click the "LAN Settings" button at the bottom right
            c) untick "Automatically detect settings"
HOTFIX - remove 50mb file limit
15 On Windows 7 you need only change one tiny registry value:
          a) click START, type "regedit", open link
          b) browse to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\WebClient\Parameters]
           c) click on "FileSizeLimitInBytes"
           d) on the EDIT menu, click MODIFY, type "ffffffff", then click OK (no quotes)
HOTFIX - remove prompt for user+pass on opening an office or pdf document via WebDAV
16 On each clientpc click START, type "Internet Options" and open it
             a) click on "Security" (top) and then "Custom level" (bottom)
             b) scroll right to the bottom and under "User Authentication" select "Automatic logon with current username and password"
SUCH an easy fix. SUCH an annoying problem on a clientpc
NB: this is only an issue if the file is opened through windows explorer. If opened through the "open" dialogue of the software itself, it doesn't happen. This is as a WebDAV mapped drive is consdered a "web folder" by windows
    explorer.
    TEST SETUP
17 On the client use the normal "map network drive"
                e.g. server= "http://fileserver:80/C_drive", tick reconnect at logon
                e.g. CMD: net use * "http://fileserver:80/C_drive"
If it doens't work check "WebDAV Authoring Rules" and check NTFS permissions for these folders. Check that on the filserver the elected impersonation user that the client is logging in with (clientpc
"manage network passwords") has NTFS permissions.
18 Test that EFS is now working over the network
           a) On a clientpc, map network drive to http://fileserver/
           b) navigate to a folder you know on the \\flieserver is encrypted with EFS
           c) create a new folder, create a new file.
IF it throws an error, check carefully you mapped to the WebDAV and not file share
                  i.e. mapped to "http://fileserver" not "\\fileserver"
Check that on clientpc the required efs certificate is installed. Then check carefully on clientpc what user account you specified during the map drive process. Then check on the \\fileserver this
account exists and has the required EFS certificate installed for use. If necessary, on clientpc click START, type "Manage Network Passwords" and delete the windows credentials currently in the vault.
           d) on clientpc (through a webDAV mapped folder) open an encrypted file, edit it, save it, close it. On the \\fileserver now check that file is readable and not gobble-de-goup
           e) on clientpc copy an encrypted efs file into a folder (a webDAV mapped folder) you know is not encrypted on \\fileserver. Now check on the \\fileserver computer that the file is readable and not gobble-de-goup (ie the
clientpc decrypted it then copied it).
If this fails, it is likely one in IIS setting on fileserver one of the shared virtual directories is set to: "pass through authentication" when it should be set to "connect as"
If this is not readable check step (11) and that you restarted the \\fileserver computer.
19 Test that clients don't get the VERY annoying prompt when opening an Office or PDF doc
          a) on clientpc in windows explorer browse to a mapped folder you know is encrypted and open an office file and then PDF.
If a prompt for user+pass then check hotfix (16)
20 Consider setting up a recycling bin for this mapped drive, so files are sent to recycling bin not permanently deleted
          a) see the last comment at the very bottom of
    this page:
    Points to consider:
       - NB: WebDAV runs on \\fileserver under a local user account, so double check local NTFS permissions for that local account and adjust file permissions accordingly. If the local account doesn't have permission, the webDAV / web folder share won't
    either.
      - CONSIDER: IP Security (IPSec) or Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) to protect files during transport.
MORE INFO: HOTFIX: RAW DATA TRANSFERS
More info on step (11) above.
Because files remain encrypted during the file transfer and are decrypted by EFS locally, both uploads to and downloads from Web folders are raw data transfers. This is an advantage as if data is intercepted it is useless. This is a massive disadvantage as
it can cause unexpected results. IT MUST BE FIXED or you could be in deep deep water!
Consider using \\clientpc to access a webfolder on \\fileserver and copying an encrypted EFS file (over the network) to a web folder on \\fileserver that is not encrypted.
Doing this locally would automatically decrypt the file first then copy the decrypted file to the non-encrypted folder.
Doing this over the network to a web folder will copy the raw data, ie skip the decryption stage and result in the encrypted EFS file being raw copied to the non-encrypted folder. When viewed locally this file will not be recognised as encrypted (no encryption
file flag, not green in windows explorer) but it will be un-readable as its contents are still encrypted. It is now not possible to locally read this file. It can only be viewed on the \\clientpc
    There is a fix:
It is implimented above, see (11) above
Microsoft's support page on this is excellent and short. Read "problem description" of "this microsoft webpage"
    Other problems + fixes
PROBLEM: Can't find server due to network location.
This one took me a long time to track down to "network location".
Win 7 uses network locations "Home" / "Work" / "Public".
If no gateway is specified in the IP address, the network is set to '"unidentified" and so receives "Public" settings.
This is a disaster for remote file share access as typically "network discovery" and "file sharing" are disabled under "Public"
FIX = either set IP address manually and specify a gateway
FIX = or  force "unidentified" network locations to assume "home" or "work" settings -
    read here or
    here
FIX = or  change the "Public" "advanced network settings" to turn on "network discovery" and "file sharing" and "Password Protected Sharing". This is safe as it will require a windows
    login to gain file access.
PROBLEM: Deleting files on network drive permanently deletes them, there is no recycling bin
By changing the location of "My Contacts" or similar to the root directory of your mapped drive, it will be added to recycling bin locations
