Dynamic to Static VPN dies after about 4 minutes
Hey everyone, I have an interesting issue with a dynamic to static VPN setup. I currently run a pair of Cisco Pix 515e firewalls in a failover setup. They are running OS 8.0.4 and they run great. I used to have a VPN between these and my office where the remote office had a static IP address. I am moving that to a new connection which uses dynamic IP addresses.
I setup a pre-shared key on the DefaultL2LGroup on the Pix and removed the existing static tunnel-group. I also reconfigured the remote firewall which is a Netgear firewall to connect to the Pix. It is still using main mode and the rest of the setup is pretty much the same.
The VPN connection establishes fine and I can pass traffic through it with no issues. The problem is that every 3 minutes and 50 seconds, the VPN will go down for a few seconds. It looks like it rekeys. My stuff will stop responding and then it will re-establish and it is fine. It happens every 3 minutes and 50 seconds like clockwork.
I have checked everything I could think of and am not sure where the issue is. I know I can do detailed debugs on the IPSec but am not sure what I should be looking there. The basic debug just givs the generic message below that says the tunnel can't communicate with the peer. I have seen that message before but not usually with a VPN that establishes. Generally if this message comes up, the tunnel never works.
Any ideas would be great.
Thanks
Neal
Group = DefaultL2LGroup, IP = X.X.X.X, Removing peer from peer table failed, no match!
Group = DefaultL2LGroup, IP = X.X.X.X, Error: Unable to remove PeerTblEntry
I did more testing and it seems that the tunnel sites at the MM_ACTIVE state and doesn't go past that. The information is the same on both ends of the tunnel and traffic passes fine when at this state but then it rekeys after about 4 minutes and starts again.
I tried changing the tunnel to an Aggresive Mode tunnel but using a name for the remote office firewall ID and now it sits at AM_ACTIVE but doesn't go past that point either.

I have a VPN setup using L2tp over ipsec. Using Leopard 10.5 it worked with no problem. With Snow Leopard it connects and works fine for about 45 minutes. Then it drops out. I then try to communicate with my wireless router with no success. I disconnect the VPN connection, wait 15 seconds and then reconnect. It then is OK for another 45 minutes. Should I reinstall Snow Leopard or rollback to 10.5? Any suggestions would be great.
I have this problem too. Most of the time, it fails after 48 minutes. Occasionally, it doesn't fail then, but will then fail at the 96 minute mark.

I have a 6d and when I use it with the iPhone app the camera turns off after about five minutes and the connection is lost. So when I am photographing wild life I keep having to break cover to reactivate the connection. Is this correct or is there a way to keep the connection alive.
You just need to go into the menu and set the camera's sleep mode to "off" or "never". It sounds as if it's currently set to 5 minutes.
Letting the camera sit active continuously, i.e. preventing it from going into sleep mode, will drain the battery(ies) a lot faster. I don't have a 6D, nor do I leave them on full time (in fact I set sleep mode to a very short duration, since tapping any button on the camera quickly re-awakens it).... so I really don't know how quickly a battery will drain. But you might be prepared with spares. If battery life is too short for you purposes, you could add a battery grip which will double the battery capacity.

LiveCycle/JBoss just dies after several minutes. Have to rerun Configuration Manager
I installed LiveCycle ES Turnkey with JBoss on a fresh install of WinXP Pro and it seemed to work flawlessly. I followed the turnkey install guide and it went without any problems. After the install I opened the LC Administrator Console and logged in with no problems. I changed the passwords and poked around a bit. It sat idle for a few moments and the next time I tried to do anything I get the standard Failed to Connect message as if I were trying to browse the web while not online.
I've tried several things to bring it back to life -- restarting the service (it's 'JBoss for Adobe LiveCycle ES' right? it always fails to stop this service when I try to restart it.), restarting the whole machine, starting the server from run.bat in jboss\bin... nothing works. I have to run the Adobe LiveCycle Configuration Manager again to be able to connect to http://localhost:8080/. I've done this three times now and every time it's the same thing. It works for several minutes and then dies for seemingly no reason.
I really appreciate any help I can get!Hello brianus
If you have checked for Possible hardware or software conflicts, you may have a hardware problem.
You sound like an experienced user that has done considerable troubleshooting, but you can consider How to test your iSight to ensure it is functional in case something there might help you.
If none of those suggestions or Apple's How to Troubleshoot iSight helps you, your iSight will likely need repair by an Apple Service Technician. There are no user serviceable parts in iSight.
Even if the iSight you bought was advertised as an NOS (new, old-stock) iSight, it may not be covered by Apple Warranty. If the seller is not providing you service guarantees or warranty, you may be interested in Apple's iSight Service: Frequently Asked Questions.

Cisco VPN disconnects after a minute or so
I can access the internet with my verizon dsl but I'm having problems accessing my work network via cisco vpn software. I can connect for a minute or two and then it kicks me off. I'm pretty sure its something with verizon because I can hop on the free wifi and connect with the vpn no problems
ThanksOne thing that was updated recently was the antivirus software was migrated from something to Symantec Endpoint Protection.
I have a feeling you may have to contact your tech support at work to see if they have to set a parameter to their Symantec software. Either that or when they made the upgrade it may have disabled your dsl connection if yours was set up to access our network by havin g the computer supply the user name and password.
When you used to go online did you have to select a connect button on the computer?
Another thing you may try is, select Start> run and type CMD
now type.... ping yahoo.com ......and see if you get a response. If you get a response this way, something in the software is blocking your connection -
VPN disconnect after 1 minute with INTEL 10.4.5 to SERVER 10.4.6?
any clue?
I've had simliar issues with VPN dropping connections, not exactly the same set up. However, always resolved by dropping the MTU size in advanced Ethernet set up on the client to custom at 1303. If it still doesn't work try this on your server too.

Having trouble with Dynamic-to-static
Having an issue with traffic passing over a dynamic-to-static VPN. Phase 1 and Phase 2 both complete. sh cry ips sa on the ASA shows 0 #pkts encaps. From the 861 it shows 0 #pkts decaps
I know its a lot to look at but hopefully someone will see something obvious that I messed up.
The second tunnel is working. It is coming from a CradlePoint MBR1400 so I am unable to apply the config from that.
TEST
My question about this is the other Dynamic VPN that is working has no static route.
I added:
route outside 10.10.10.0 255.255.255.248 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP of the non working remote IKE Peer)
This had no effect.
Looking at the two tunnels. The working tunnel is using IKE IPSEC and the nonworking tunnel is using IKE IPsecOverNatT. What have I entered that tells the VPN to use IPsecOverNatT? -
I use a mac with 10.8.3 installed. I use Cisco VPN & citrix receiver to connect to work via my home wireless which connects & works brilliantly but then hangs after 57 minutes and about 35 seconds. I disconnect but can't reconnect straight away although it goes through the motions but doesn't find a connection. I have to wait about 10 minutes (or restart the MAC) then it connects fine again and I have another 57 minutes. I previously used 10.6 for a while without any problems and then the VPN just stopped connecting? after trying to resolve without success I upgraded the OS hoping that this might fix the issue which it has but created this other problem! I can live with it but thought there may be some way to correct this surely. I'm not heavily technically minded and have read reports about the racoon service may be causing this but not sure how you do this very simply step by step

IMac G5 tries to start and dies after spinning cog for a minute
iMac G5 tries to start and dies after spinning cog for a minute
I did this;
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk.
the result was.
the 'permissions' are sometimes wrong, but they repair
the hard drive is either repaired or OK
the iMac will then restart and work fine and sometimes shut down and restart OK
after replacing the Hard Drive I actually thought I had fixed it and went to bed late but happy,
on waking in the morning, however I was not so happy it fired up and then died after dong -> apple logo -> spinning cog -> dead!!
I would be grateful for any help
Thanks
PeteHi Miriam,
Thanks yes,
here we go -- after running disc utilities it tells me directory OK and disk OK (or something like that) When I replaced the Hard Drive, I started 'fresh' erased/formatted the hard drive (new Seagate Barracuda 7200 500GB) and it has just got 'tiger' on it (and upgraded to whatever it is now I think I remember 4.11, I can't tell at the moment as I have got the back off) I didn't transfer any data I just took the old drive (Seagate 160GB) out and stuck the new one in.
I've just changed the battery (I didn't really think it would work, but I was still hopeful and I'd bought the battery anyway) I did the LED thing, the internal power button thing, and the resetting the SMU thing (with crossed fingers and bated breath) but -- so I'm thinking is it the power supply? I read some of Jim's weighty, but worthy tome and resolved to remove the power supply and have a look. On opening it up, it does look as though, one (at least) of the capacitors has 'blown' (by the way, just in case I sound like I know what I'm talking about, I don't of course, I'm just quoting Jim's words;-) I'd love to send you a picture of the inside of the power supply showing what I believe to be a 'blown' capacitator (and I'm going to try to send one to Jim as I think it might be useful to him and others. can I attach a photo in any way or would you like to send me your email address <Edited by Moderator>
Thanks
Pete
PS it's still 'weird' to me, why it starts and runs well, when started from tiger (or whatever) and then starts or restarts from the Hard Drive unless I leave it a few hours and come back and try to start it
again? wow it's late nearly 4.00am here in london UK. -
After about 5 minutes of Photoshop CC 2014 running it crashes, i have tried running it as an administrator but still crashes.

IT CRASHES FOR NO REASON, i can open the programme up and not use it still crashes, I have never had a problem with Windows. -
MacBook Pro OS X 10.7.5 Computer hangs after about 5 minutes
After about 5 minutes of use, the multi-colored ball shows up and the computer hangs. It keeps coming and going after the initial 5 minutes of use.
1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. All it does is to collect information about the state of the computer. That information goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. However, you should be cautious about running any kind of program (not just a shell script) at the behest of a stranger. If you have doubts, search this site for other discussions in which this procedure has been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that the instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
4. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
5. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
6. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
7. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
8. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "syntax error," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
9. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
10. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line
[Process completed]
to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report the results. No harm will be done.
11. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start Time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
12. When you post the results, you might see the message, "You have included content in your post that is not permitted." It means that the forum software has misidentified something in the post as a violation of the rules. If that happens, please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
Note: This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

MY LAPTOP DIES NOT RECOGNIZE MY IPOD. AFTER ABOUT 20 MINUTES I GET A MESSAGE THAT SAYS MY IPOD HAS BEEN CORRUPTED AND NEEDS TO BE RESTORED. ALSO AFTER THE IPOD HAS BEEN CONNECTED TO THE COMPUTER THE IPOD WILL FREEZE. I AM ONLY ABLE TO USE IT AFTER THE BATTERY HAS RUN OUT. WHAT COULD BE CAUSING THESE PROBLEMS AND HOW DO I RESTORE MY IPOD!!!!!
Hey gwscrt,
Since iTunes directed to you to restore your iPod, I'd check out the following article that goes over the steps to do so:
Restoring iPod to factory settings
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1339
I would read the document in full, but here are the applicable steps for you:
How to restore iPod
Verify that you have an active Internet connection, because you may need to download new versions of the iTunes and iPod Software.
Download and install the latest version of iTunes if necessary.
Open iTunes. Connect your iPod to your computer using the USB or FireWire cable that came with your iPod.
After a few moments, your iPod will appear in the Source panel in iTunes.
Select your iPod in the Source panel. You will see information about your iPod appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes window.
Click Restore.
If you are using a Mac, you will be asked to enter an administrator’s name and password.
A progress bar will appear on the computer screen, indicating that stage one of the restore process has begun. When this stage is done, iTunes will present one of two messages with instructions specific to the iPod model you are restoring.
Disconnect iPod and connect it to iPod Power Adapter (typically applies to older iPod models).
Leave iPod connected to computer to complete restore (typically applies newer iPod models).
During stage two of the restore process, the iPod displays an Apple logo as well as a progress bar at the bottom of the display. It is critical that the iPod remain connected to the computer or iPod power adapter during this stage.
Note: The progress bar may be difficult to see, because the backlight on the iPod display may be off.
After stage two of the restore process is complete, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear. It will ask you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences, as it did when you connected your iPod for the first time.
Have a good one,
David
