Edit in place without Xsan

Hi
Is it possible to edit in place without xsan?.
I've tried adding a new device and entering the URI in administration but it still wants to cache
thanks in advance
regards
Lee

I had the same problem. here's what you do since apple isn't that clear in the help file.
from the FCS client app open the admin pannel
click on devices
double click Library (this is the default, same applies to other drives that are mounted)
on the "local directory" line click once in there and then scrub through to see your full path
copy this full path
on the "macintosh edit-in-place URL" line type file://localhost then paste the path from above
log out of the client and log back in
you should now be able to drag a fcp project to the FCP icon on the dock and start editing in place

  • Edit in Place without installing Oracle Drive

    Hello
We wish to use the functionality of 'Edit In Place' through our own custom jsp pages however we do not wish to deploy Oracle Drive to users as we want to force them to use the business logic inherent in our custom jsp pages.
Is there a way of using 'Edit In Place' without deploying Oracle Drive?
    Thanks
    Phil

    Hi Phil,
You could build your own "edit-in-place" functionality with some custom programming, given that you are writing custom JSP pages.
The Content DB Development Kit has a topic titled "Custom Web Applications" with an explanation on how to configure custom servlets.
You could write a custom servlet that uses the Content DB API to update Documents and interact with your custom JSP/HTML page, which could provide an "edit-in-place" GUI.
You could use a product such as Editize (http://www.editize.com) to provide the editing functionality.
When the client-side editing is finished, the changes can be sent to your custom servlet, which would update the Document.
If you build this solution, you may be able to offer it to other Content DB customers!

  • Edit-in-place without SAN

I have read that you can configure edit-in-place even if you don't have a SAN. But I can't figure out exactly what needs to go into the edit-in-place URLs and also anything else they may need to be done on the server/client side.
For a little more information we have a dedicated server running Final Cut Server, this system is not running Final Cut Pro and no one works on it. We have an external drive array connected to the server via Firewire. This is where our information lies. I have already shared out the Drive array via AFP and SMB.
Please let me know what I may need to do to get this working.
If you need any more information, just let me know.
Thanks in advance for the help!

Go to the admin panel of the Java client (not the System Preferences). Go to Devices. Open the Device that corresponds to the drives you are sharing out. In the Mac EIP URI space, enter "file://<path to share as listed in the path value for the device>". After you leave the field it will change. This is normal.
So you might enter, "file:///Volumes/Media Drives/" and it will reformat itself to "file://localhost/Volumes/Media Drives/". Save and close.
Now when your clients have the share connected and open FCSvr, they will have edit-in-place access to the assets on that device.

  • HOW TO: EDIT IN PLACE ON WINDOWS CLIENT

    Hi everybody,
I work in TIBA (broadcaster company), we use FCS so much and I have a problem, actually i have running edit in place on XSAN for MAC clients, but i cant work of the same way on windows.
We have XSAN and fiber channels working.
I configure the device but it doesn´t work.
Somebody, help me please. My email is [email protected]
    Kind regards
    Emiliano

    Hi,
No iam not using stornext for the windows clients.
The mac and windows clients running on ethernet. The the mac clients have mapped the xsan volumes using AFP or SMB protocol and the edit in place works ok.
The windows clients have mapped the xsan volumes through SMB but the edit un place doesnt work, the files are cached and doesn´t run as edit in place.
    Note: sorry by my english.
    kind regard.
    Emiliano
Are you using StorNext FX to add the Windows clients to your Xsan? If so, then all you have to do is add the Windows Edit-in-place URI to each EIP device in the Devices section of the Java client Admin GUI (not the System Preferences pane). Once you've done that, EIP will work for the Windows clients as well. Here are the instructions for entering the correct URI syntax.
If you are not using StorNext FX for your Windows clients, please give us more detail on how your system is set up.

  • Edit-in-place NOT working...

I've recently installed FCS at our small shop. I've read the Geller book, followed the Admin manual, and pretty much have gotten it to work.
However, I can't get "edit in place" to work. It did work when I initially installed the system and tested it. And now, after a complete re-install, it doesn't work.
I am using two local RAIDs. Each have a media directory that I set up as a device. For example:
One device is called "Mojo Project Media 02"
In the Device Pane (on the Admin / Client Java Interface) the Local Directory reads:
    "/Volumes/RAID_02/Mojo Project Media 02"
So the Mac edit-in-place URI reads:
    "file://localhost/Volumes/RAID_02/Mojo Project Media 02"
I can't get the edit in place URI to not ad "localhost" but I don't think this should matter.
Whenever I try to move media into a Browser Window from FCS, it tells me I must copy it to my local cache first. This didn't happen when I first installed/configured the system.
Can you not set up edit-in-place for a local directory (ie. a volume locally attached to the server with FCS installed)?
I know it worked before. Is there something I am missing?

    Thanks A. Richards.
After much testing, I realized that on the FCSr machine that it indeed had edit-in-place status because of the storage directly attached to it. BUT the other client computers did not.
So basically, since we don't have the $1000 a seat for XSAN and we are only cutting DV and DVCPRO HD...
We could configure our Mac Pro Server to be an AFP share over the network; it's plenty fast over Ethernet since it's aggregated over 6 gigabit ports to a switch and has PCIe RAID storage attached. We could give this edit-in-place status IF...
We used another machine (server class) to install FCSr on.
    This would work right?

  • Assets are "Edit In Place" yet dragging to Final Cut Pro requests caching

This is an odd one. I have a large number of assets on our device that I can successfully drag from Final Cut Server directly to Final Cut Pro without issue. However I have what appears to be thousands of assets on the exact same device that I can not drag without the dialog box "You must add this asset to the cache before you can use it in a Final Cut Studio project."
This is very weird. If I right click on the asset in Final Cut Studio and select to view the Original Media I get the warning "The asset is an edit-in-place asset. Any changes..." so obviously it knows it is an edit in place asset, so why are they giving me grief when dragging to Final Cut Pro?
Specs: Final Cut Server 1.1, Final Cut Pro 6.0.4
    Thanks!

Sorry that I keep replying to myself, but the bazaar behavior continues...
I took one of these odd assets and made a copy to my desktop. Then I deleted the asset and file within Final Cut Server. Next I moved the asset from my desktop back to the original location and waited for a Full Scan to pick up the asset.
After the Full Scan, the asset was draggable to Final Cut Pro! I can't possibly do this to every asset. Did the database get corrupt?
    Ideas? Thanks!

  • How do you edit the "place" in Places?

I've been working on assigning places to images in my Aperture library. I'm doing this manually.
At the top of the Map View, you see the Country, State, City and Place. I cannot figure out how to edit the Place. Aperture keeps assigning the same Place to all of my images.
For example, I have photos from Berryville, Virginia. When I add that location, it automaticallly adds Folly Beach as the Place. Same thing happens with some photos taken in New Orleans.
Moving the Pin doesn't solve the issue. I've deleted the loation and tried adding it again, but the same thing happens. I don't see anything in the Aperture user manual that addresses this.
    Any help would be appreciated.

It took me some time to figure it out, too:
What I do for my older pictures without gps data is:
    - select the picture in the places view
    - Main menu -> Metadata -> assign Location
    - in the search field (upper left corner) I enter the name of a Landmark that I am looking for
    - Aperture will show the landmark on the map, marked by a pin, and a place name that I do not want
    - then I move the pin to the precise spot on the map and adjust the radius to a very small value, so that not all my pictures will show up in the same location
    - now in the bottom row text field the place name can be edited. I change it to the name I want and press "assign"
    Hope that helps

  • Edit-In-Place still caching media

FCSvr system, XSAN, Edit-In-Place set for all Devices. But when FCP projects are checked out by the editors, it still loads all the video files into their local Cache. Unable to duplicate the problem on my own system. The difference is that they have some Ethernet only clients, and some Fibre clients (FCP only on Fibre clients). Why would Edit-In-Place still download the video files to local cache?
FYI, I've set up FCSvr systems before, this is my first mixed (Fibre + Ethernet only) environment, and the first time I've seen this odd behavior.

OK, well, there were other problems they didn't tell me about. Some video assets could be drag-and-dropped from a Projects window in FCSvr to the Browser in FCP. Others could only be done from an Assets window in FCSvr. And this had been going on since the FCSvr 1.5 upgrade.
I attempted to change the URI, but FCSvr would simply revert back to the original every time I tried. I logged out, and the whole system seems to work fine now. Go figure.
Anyone see any quirks with the FCSvr 1.5 upgrade?
Now they want to upgrade everything to Snow Leopard. I'm not touching the Leopard Servers until I see a more stable SL Server!
Still, very odd problem. Wish I knew what it was exactly. Seems playing with URI's reset something. But it all works now.

  • Edit in Place on test setup

    Obviously, I'm doing something wrong?
My test system in my Macbook Pro. I have a folder at the root of my boot drive named STORAGE. I have set it up as a device, and in the Administration/Devices window, I have defined the URI as file://localhost/STORAGE. When I look at the Devices list in the Final Cut Server Preference Pane, next to the device STORAGE it says XSAN, so FC Server certainly thinks it is an edit in place device. However, when I check out a Final Cut Pro Project, I can see that server is moving all the associated clips from STORAGE to my cache. In the Show All Jobs window, I see 34 events where it says Downloading <name of file> from Device Storage to Device Export. So for some reason, I'm not able to actually edit in place.
    What am I missing?

Oh, nevermind. I figured it out. I needed to have the Volumes/Macintosh HD in the URI even though it is technically the "root" drive.

  • Edit in place documents not working in beehive team collaboration w/IE

I know the Chrome,Firefox browsers don't have an edit-in-place, but IE is supposed to map the network drive via webdav and uses this as a back channel to save the changes on saving the document.
This was working very well on my old laptop using a 32 bit windows, and an older IE platform. probably 95% of the time.
Since my upgrade to Windows 7, 64-bit, IE 8.0.7601, it works about 20% of the time. Very unreliable. Does anyone know what can be done to get this to work more consistently?
    Thanks.

  • Edit In Place but use Edit Proxies possible?

    Hi all,
Trying to figure out if the above is possible.
Reason being Orig media is either uncompressed or prores 444 or Red.
Over Gig-E the Prores edit proxies are fine to be edit in place so no need to cache every time.
    Is this possible?
    Cheers

Yes. You'll want to reshare the edit proxy device read only, via AFP or NFS.
There are caveats - editing over ethernet cannot guarantee bandwidth and latency in the same way as fibre or direct of disk, so there might be occasional dropped frames. But for the purposes of editing with the proxies, this is not so much of a big deal - you'll be conforming with the hi-res media at a later point.
Depending on how many clients and streams per client would be using this, you'd need to have a think about the backend infrastructure. I've got a setup where I have the edit proxies device on an XSan and a dedicated XServe resharing the device as AFP (read only). That keeps the AFP I/O off the final cut server machine.
You can also do things like get a 4 port ethernet card and bond the network interfaces to give you more bandwidth from the xserve to the switch.

  • ... Edit in place ...

    Hi,
I'm triying to setup a device to use it as edit in place.
I've 3 MBP, one of them is the server with ESATA hard disk share.
I access to the hard disk via network. this hard disk is setup for proxies etc ...
I just want to manage project version in FCS, but everytime media used in the timeline are duplicate (in FCS folder).
So medias are already on this hard disk, so no need to be duplicate on the same media.
    How to configure ????
    thanks

In order to make a non-Xsan device edit-in-place, you'll need to modify the device in the Administration window of the client software.
Review the section titled "About Edit-in-Place Devices" here for details:

  • Is there a way to edit in Imovie without the format being DV?

So I have to give a small project to someone just to decide what parts they want in and out. I was going to use Imovie because it is easy for them to use. Problem is I don't want the file size to be too big. I don't care about quality, this is just for them to see what parts of an interview to keep. I would like to be able to import mp4's or some other compressed format and have Imovie keep it in this format and not convert it to DV. It's a difference of 2MB vs 75MB. I tried when I opened a new project to change the video format but it doesn't seem to work. Anyone have any suggestions?
    Thanks

Tanks for the quick replies everyone! I think some of the replies that mis understood my question though. I want to actually send the Imovie file to the person. This is what I am doing
I have 23 clips from different interviews. I want to send a Imovie file to this person so that he can put them in the order he wants the clips to go in, move them around, delete them and so on. I am just using this as a reference for the file. I am working in final cut and I am going to just use what he does in the Imovie file as a guideline of what I will be editing. In final cut you can change what the timeline video format is (jpeg, mp4, etc) so you can share edits and files without sending the full uncompressed video files. This is kinda what I want to do.
    Thanks

    Hi Matt,
Thank you for your very useful reply.
I have non blocking serial approval workflow.
In my workflow I have attachment as PDF document to be signed. URI of that document is from Odrive. Foe example O:\sjrwmd\DMSFAContainer\DMSFALibrary\36397\P041282\978599\Invoice_with_2_blank_sig_OD_2.pdf
When task has been assign to any user, from task detail page of the worklist application user click / open that pdf file and sign the document. When user save this document Odrive should save that to Contentdb.
Just wanted to know that why it is not ODrive bug?
I was able to do following test It works only in Acrobat 6.0.
    Steps I did,
    1) Upload pdf file to folder with manual versioning enable.
    2) Manually checked out file from web ui.
    3) Login to ODrive using same user
    4) Created html file with link (Please replace href portion to your url of the file)
    <HTML>
    <BODY>
    Testing Link <BR>
    <a class="blue" href="O:/sjrwmd/DMSFAContainer/DMSFALibrary/36397/P041282/978599/Invoice_102_wit
    h_blank_sig_OD.pdf" target="_blank">Invoice_101CD.pdf</a> <BR>
    <a class="blue" href="O:/sjrwmd/DMSFAContainer/DMSFALibrary/16966/P040577/246361/ST_Memo.doc"
    target="_blank">ST_Memo.doc</a>
    </BODY>
    </HTML>
    5) Open html in browser
    6) Click on document link
    7) Will open pdf files in browser
    8) Sign the document
    9) Click on save a copy button.
    10) In the save a copy dialog , file name place paste your file url of o drive for example in my
    case
    O:/sjrwmd/DMSFAContainer/DMSFALibrary/36397/P041282/978599/Invoice_102_with_blank_sig_OD.pdf
    click save
    11) This should save updated file
    12) Checked in document
I will look into programmatically way to achive this.
    Regards,
    Jigar

  • Edit-in-place over Ethernet

I know the Admin Guide recommends against it but I'm thinking that if I make an XServe the head of a 8TB raid via Fibre then connect the XServe to the network, sharing the drives over AFP on our GbE network, we should have plenty of throughput for 10 workstations to edit SD. Am I'm crazy to assume this? Then I can just connect any HD clients I need directly via Fibre.
Before shutting it down, consider that for the past 4 years we've used a Windows 2000 server with RAID storage attached via a single GB link to a switch that connected to 10 clients. No problem with SD, but this was Avid. Do you guys think Avid has some magic or the math on this just works?
Thoughts? Suggestions? Success stories? Horror stories?

I am looking at doing the same thing but do not have enough infomation yet.
    Currently, I have a Win2003 server with 15 terabyte raid 60. I use 10Gb CX4
from the server to a HP Procurve switch. It's gigabit (Cat6) to the clients.
There are 10 Avid and 3 Final Cut and we currently edit standard def DV25.
The HP switch (currently 2 10GB ports and 96 gigabit ports) also handles all of my other computers (PC and Apple). Graphics, audio editing, websurfing, etc. without any problems.
We do NOT share projects. Everyone has their own folder on the server. I was told this would not work when I built it 2 years ago but it works great!
I am now going to change everything to Final Cut, install FC Server and shooting HDV. So can I ignore Fibre Channel and build a another system with ethernet? I'm about to find out.
