Edit RAW in Lightroom 4 then Merge in Photoshop 6, or Merge in Photoshop 6 then Edit in Lightroom 4?

I am wanting to make a panorama. Should I first Edit my RAW files in Lightroom 4 then Merge in Photoshop 6, or Merge in Photoshop 6 and then Edit in Lightroom 4?
I can easily edit the RAW files first and then go back and redo them if I have to in Lightroom, but if I Merge it first in Photoshop I no longer have a RAW file to play with.
I am using .DNG files in Lightroom.

I would import the individual photos into LR, make adjustments to the individual photos, use LR’s Merge in Photoshop to create your panorama in PS, then you can make adjustments in PS and LR, but the panorama is no longer a raw file.
You could obviously use Bridge and ACR to do similar things to the individual raw photos as you can in LR, so the choice is the import/catalog structure of LR or just the files in folders non-structure of Bridge.

  • How to Edit RAWs first in LR and cto ontinue in RAW in PS-CS2

After having edited RAW photographs in LR I would like to be able to continue my editing in RAW in PS-CS2. However when I go from LR to PS-CS2 with "edit in Photoshop.exe" it opens a PSD file and therefore I can not continue in PS-CS2 RAW.
    What can I do?
    Thanks for reply!

LR lacks the hooks to do what you want, pass RAW to ACR and then open in PSCS. Maybe some day. For now Export with XMP sidecar and open in PSCS from Bridge. As Geoff and Lee Jay indicate, ACR will pick-up what you havw done in LR and then you can continue from there. The only way for now.

  • Can't edit RAW in iPhoto - grayed out

My system recently crashed and after installing a new hard drive and reinstalling programs I find that I can no longer edit RAW pictures within iPhoto. I see both the RAW and the jpg thumbnails (I shot in both formats side by side) in iPhoto. When I click on the jpg it allows me to edit. When I click on the RAW it will not allow me to edit. I can click the Edit button but once on the crop, enhance, rotate adjust page all options are grayed out. Prior to the crash I could edit RAW in iPhoto - I want to get back to that. I can edit RAW in an external editor but want to do it in iPhoto. Using a Nikon D90. A secondary issue if you care to comment.... all thumbnails are in place when I reinstalled the program however the jpgs are only place holders. When I click on the thumbnail I get the dread exclamation mark. I have to go hunting for the file in the "Show Package Contents" command. The RAW thumbnails will allow me to explore in an external editor (see above) but I cannot edit in iPhoto. Thanks, Craig

My guess is that the two problems are related.
When I click on the thumbnail I get the dread exclamation mark.
Your Library is corrupted. That's what you need to sort out.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Merge to Panorama in Photoshop not using edited RAW files

When I had LR4, I could Edit in > Merge to Panorama in PS and it would take the edited RAW files and merge them. Now in LR5 it seems to be taking the unedited RAW files and making the panorama. Is there a setting or something I'm missing in LR5?

Yes it is that simple. Just do a google search for Lightroom and Photoshop preference file locations and you should find them. The next time you start the programs, they will rebuild them. Of course, you'll have to re-enter any custom preference settings you've used. Good luck. Of course, when you think you've located them. Just rename them and move them into another folder first. That way, if you've picked the wrong file, you can easily move it back. Once things are working, you can just delete them.
BTW, this is a good troubleshooting tool for any mac applications that are acting wonky. Just delete that preference file, and more often than not, the problem will be fixed.

    Hi Ashley Clavette,
The Initial view setting works perfectly when the file is opened in Acrobat after setting the desired Initial View.
When you upload the file onto Wordpress, and view it on that website in the browser...it might be using a different pdf handler program which might be causing this issue ( it would be helpful, if you could provide the screenshot) , however when you download the pdf again from wordpress server...and open in Acrobat/Reader...then what  exactly happens ?  Does the pdf opens in the desired Initial View setting?

  • Trying to open file in photoshop elements, only first option available in Edit Photo window.  The other two has "Edit a Copy is not applicable to raw or Digital Negative files" same for Edit Original.

Brand new user to Lightroom 5.  Was following tutorials and doing fine editing.  After done editing NEF files, I'm trying to open them in PSE 11 to further edit.  Using the "Edit Photo with Adobe Photoshop Elements Editor".  But the window only has the first option available and the other two grayed out.  Each of those has "...is not applicable to raw or Digital Negative files."  What??

sorry, no can do...ain't gonna happen.
What you've done is hit the wall on is the basic difference between lite duty spot healing and photo level tone and color correction (Lightroom and Camera Raw) and heavy duty pixel retouching in Photoshop.
When you need to substantially manipulate the "pixels" you need Photoshop and you'll be forced to render the raw file into a TIFF or PSD file either through Camera Raw or more better, via Lightroom.
You can do the basic tone and color correction directly in Lightroom and edit in Photoshop from Lightroom. But you will NEED to create and save out a "rendered" image that is no longer raw...then retouch to your heart's desire, save it and it'll be available in Lightroom along side your original raw if you choose.
But no, there's no way to open a raw in Photoshop, manipulate the heck out of it with massive retouching then save that back out as a raw file...ain't gonna happen.

  • How to edit raw files in lightroom?

when editing raw files in  lightroom the only extra option I seem to get is more control over white balance.  Am I missing something?  is there a way to open raw files in camera raw (like in photoshop elements) or can the editing options I get for all photos raw(nef) and jpg work better on raw than on jpg?  I am a little confused by it...

Lr uses Camera Raw internally for processing raw files.
You create renditions by editing raw images in develop mode until you are satisfied, and then exporting those renditions.
If you mean you want access to proprietary NEF settings placed in the raw image by the camera or Nikon software... this is not possible. You can mimic some of the settings with camera profiles and presets, but Lr (like most software) does not have (complete, unfettered, unencumbered) access to proprietary image details.  Adobe uses the public Nikon SDK to get access to the encrypted WB information.

  • Editing RAW files after taking it in to Photoshop

Hello, I'll probably have a hard time explaining my question but I will do so to the best of my ability.
When I import to lightroom, I leave my RAW files (canon .cr2) as is and I do not convert them to DNG.
I am able to use presets to preview the finished file- and I notice I have exact color temp sliders when editing the RAW files.
I then reset the RAW file and take it into photoshop to perform mainly skin touchups- but when I save it back it saves as a PSD.
Then when I use my preset- im able to generally get the color close to what the preset looks like on RAW but there are still some things about the photo
that I can not exactly put my finger on- but they are different. I like the way the sliders change things when editing raw but not after saving as PSD or TIFF.
I know its not possible to "SAVE AS RAW" in photoshop to have all the same controls back in lightroom- but is there any way around this?
I know I could technically use the preset in lightroom BEFORE going into photoshop but I like using the preset as a final touch regarding color and
using the highlights shadows whites and blacks sliders.
Is there anyway to make my presets look exactly the same as they do on a RAW file but on a saved file from photoshop?
    Or is there any workaround?
    Thank you!

By the time you are editing in Photoshop you are no longer working on the raw image. Photoshop might indicate that you are, but it is only telling you the name of the file from which the image came. Photoshop cannot save raw images because it cannot edit raw image data. The conversion has already taken place. There is a workaround, sort of. Do is much as you can in Lightroom and then open into Photoshop as a smart object. Then you can return to Camera Raw from Photoshop to make adjustments on the raw image data. This works best however, if Lightroom and Camera Raw are from the same version.

Hi I have a question about shooting in Raw with my Canon EOS 6d.
I'm in the process of learning photography and my goal was to start shooting in raw.
I have Photoshop CS5. When I tried to edit my images in raw I received an error message stating, "The photoshop camera raw plug-in did not recognize the format. If these files are from a camera, you may need to update your camera raw plug in."
In researching the issue I read that to edit in raw you need a camera model requirement of at least 7.3 which only works with CS6. My version of CS5 is 6.0.0.205. Being new to all this I see that my options are to upgrade to CS6 or convert by using DNG converter and paying a monthly fee. Two things I know nothing about and don't know which is would be more beneficial.
I'd appreciate any advise on which route to go and how upgrade and what it may cost. THANKS in advance!
    Heather

In researching the issue I read that to edit in raw you need a camera model requirement of at least 7.3 which only works with CS6.
That is correct. Your camera was first supported by Camera Raw 7.3. Camera Raw 7.3 will not work with CS5. You need CS6 or CC.
Being new to all this I see that my options are to upgrade to CS6 or convert by using DNG converter and paying a monthly fee. Two things I know nothing about and don't know which is would be more beneficial.
I'd appreciate any advise on which route to go and how upgrade and what it may cost.
It all depends on your preferred workflow and your budget.
Using the DNG converter is free. There is no monthly fee. You use the converter to convert all Raw files from the EOS 6D to DNGs then edit the DNGs in CS5. That's an extra step every time - every photo. Some people don't like the extra step. Others don't mind.
Camera raw, DNG | Adobe Photoshop CC
Or you can upgrade to CS6 (non-Cloud) and pay the upgrade fee
    Creative Suite 6
Or join the Cloud and pay the monthly fee
Or join the Photoshop Photography Program (US9.99/month) and get PS CC+LR

  • New lame workaround for editing RAW images in Photoshop

Instead of re-importing, I open the image in ACR, then jump back to iPhoto and make some inconsequential and quick change (sepia, anyone?), then when saving from Photoshop, I navigate to the same roll in Modified that I came out of in Originals and save as a jpg (over the Enhance/Sepia/Edge Blur/whatever). The edit I made in iPhoto (don't forget to save in iPhoto before saving from Photoshop) tells the library to use the jpg from the Modified folder (instead of just using it temporarily while it parses the RAW file).

sorry, but I disagree. I don't think it's lame at all. The only thing I would add is that it's important to unselect "Save edited RAW files as 16 bit TIFFs", unless of course you intend to save your Photoshop (or other editor) files as TIFFs.

Trying to export RAW originals from Aperature 3 to LightRoom 4: I choose File>Export>Originals. Then Pictures>LR. But then I can't find files in LR library.Files seem stuck in Pictures as NEF and or DNG files. I know Im stuck on something dumb but I am stuck. Help?

You now need to import those files into Lightroom.
BTW, Lightroom uses a "referenced" system so your images will always be in the folders you download/copy them to. Lightroom is a database first and foremost, albeit with non-destructive editing capabilities (effectively Adobe Camera Raw).

  • Importing into iPhoto, edited RAW photos from Photoshop CS3

I edit all my photos in Photoshop CS3. Sometimes I just batch edit many of them. But when I import these edited images, iPhoto only shows them in unedited form. How do I import these edited images into iPhoto, and yet maintain the edits.
I am a professional photographer, and the only reason I need to import these images into iPhoto, is that I use the web galleries as the viewing tool for my clients.
    Thanks.

    coxpix:
When iPhoto imports a RAW file it creates a jpg version of it for display and editing with by iPhoto. Therefore, when you edit a RAW with CS3 you must import the new edited version, of whatever format you chose to save as, and use that one. It's the nature of the beast. All edits to RAW files when saved must be saved as a new file.
For what it's worth, the following may be of some help in using CS3 with iPhoto:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be untouched for further attempts at fixing or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory .
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Photoshop Elements 12 Editor Crashes When Editing Raw

    Hi --
Consistently when I'm editing RAW files (Canon T2) the Elements Editor 12 crashes.  To repro:
    1) I'll select 5-8 photos in the Organizer.
    2) Right click and "Edit with PS Editor"
    3) RAW importer/editor (not sure if that's the official name, but it's the screen when I can make minor edits and white balance)
    4) Select all images and open.
    5) Initially they'll all open in the full PSE Editor, but after editing a few the editor will hang and suddenly wierd things happen:
         a)     the "after" version of the photo is a grey and white checkerboard.  If I go back to the "before" version, it looks fine
         b)     the close file "x" button in the top right is disabled (just get a beep), but if I go under "file" and "close" in the menu, the file will close.
         c)     I can't close the application itself.via the "X" button or "Exit".  I need to logout or manually go into task manager and kill the process.
I have a fairly new PC with vanilla installation of Windows 8.1.
    Any suggestions?

Update -- still having this problem but not it seems to happen when editing JPEG as well.  I'm not sure how to repro it as it doesn't happen every time, but sometime between the 2nd and 10th photo that I try to edit the editor crashes right after I save or "save as".  I hear a system bing and then the editor becomes non-responsive.  I can "close' the file via the menu (not via the "x" button in the top right), but no other functionality works.  Can't close the editor other than by shutting down or manually killing via Task Manager.
Incredibly frustrating.  I'm thinking about uninstalling/reinstalling but am worried about losing all of the data in the catalog (~15k photos).  I'm thinking about just writing the metadata to the files (most have it already) and manually copying the catalog files.
Anyone else have this problem and/or suggestions on how to address it?
    Thanks much

The rebel XS is supported by Camera Raw version 4.6 and newer... Update to that version of camera raw.
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4044 fro windows
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4035 for mac (since you do not state your operating system...)
Follow the instructions on the readme found on the download pages, and you'll be all set!
Also, I guess that you tried the version 4.1 of the converter. One should always use the latest version.
